2 TheChapelandChoirsofJesusCollege JesusCollege,foundedin1496byJohnAlcock,BishopofEly,asTheCollegeof theblessedvirginmary,saintjohntheevangelist,andthegloriousvirgin SaintRadegund,hasalongandrichtraditionofchurchmusic.TheChapel servedasthechurchofthenunnerywhichprecededthecollege,andpartsof thebuildingdatebacktothetwelfthcentury.thebookofcommonprayer, devisedbythomascranmer,astudentandlaterfellowofthecollegeinthe sixteenthcentury,continuestobeusedinthechapel. TheCollegeisdistinctiveinmaintainingtwochoirs,eachofwhichtypically singstwoservicesperweekintermtime: TheChapelChoirwasre foundedin1849,whenprovisionwasmadefor six singingboys toadorntheworshipofthenewly restoredchapel.sincethen, treblesfromallovercambridgehavevolunteeredtosingforcollegeservices. TheCollegedoesnotmaintainachoirschool,butinsteadrecruitsboy choristersfromawiderangeoflocalschools. TheCollegeChoir,formedin1982followingtheadmissionofwomen students,hasfemaleundergraduatessingingthesopranoline(andaltoline, alongsidemalecountertenors).theadultmalesingersformthe backrow for bothchoirs.eachchoirhasdevelopedadistinctivereputationandrepertoire, whilstcombiningforkeyeventsandlarge scaleprojects.inadditiontothe weeklyscheduleofchoralservices,membersofthechoirsenjoyconcerts, recordings,broadcastsandforeigntours. TheChapelhasthreeorgans:theSuttonOrgan,locatedclosesttotheAltar, datesfromthemid19thcenturyandwasgiventothecollegebysirjohn Sutton.ThedesignsonthepanelsarebyPugin.Thisinstrumentiscurrently beingrestoredbywilliamdrakeandwillbereturnedtoitsoriginal1849state. In2007,the33 stophudlestonorganwasinstalledbyorgelbaukuhnof Switzerland,andin2010,theCollegecommissionedtheRawlinsonOrgan,a three stopchamberorganbykennethtickellofnorthampton. TheCollegePrayer OeverlastingGod,whothroughmanygenerationshastblessedthecollege whichbearsthenameofjesus,grantthatwe,itslatestsonsanddaughters,may befortifiedandcladinhisraiment,andmaybygracekeepjesusinourhearts, throughhimwholivedanddiedforus,thesamejesuschristourlord. 2
