Arockiam. Fra Savariappan asks for clarification regarding the appointment of a conventual prior for the Annai Formation Community in Perumaleri (Novitiate). COUNCIL SESSION August 2, USA: Dispensation from article 56 of the Provincial Directory for the purchase of a new house The General Council discussed a letter (July 21, 2016) from Fra John M. Fontana, the US Prior Provincial, in which he asks for a dispensation from article 56 of the US Provincial Directory to purchase a new house in Buena Park (California). The friars current priory, Seven Holy Founders, in Anaheim is almost entirely occupied by Servite High School. For this reason, the USA Province intends to buy a new house. In accord with articles of the Constitutions the General Council has granted the requested dispensation and authorized the above mentioned expense. 2. Resignation of fra Ricardo M. Silva Aranda from the office of Prior Provincial Fra Ricardo M. Silva Aranda sent a letter dated July 12, 2016 to the Prior General in which he renounces the office of Prior Provincial of the Santa María de los Andes Province. The General Council discussed the letter and in view of the circumstances and motives involved were favorable to the Prior General s decision to accept Fra Ricardo s resignation. 3. Appointment of a director for the Higher Institute of Religious Studies at Monte Berico With a decree dated June 25, 2016, the Prior General as Great Chancellor of the Marianum Pontifical Theological Faculty appointed Fra Gino Alberto M. Faccioli director of the Istituto Superiore di Scienze Religiose Santa Maria di Monte Berico. COUNCIL SESSION August 8, Postponement of the election of a Delegate for the General Communities at the European Regional Conference Because new friars have joined the General communities the General Council decided to postpone until November 2016 the election of a General Communities Delegate to the European Regional Conference. 2. Marianum Pontifical Theological Faculty: Launching collaboration with the Pontifical Gregorian University The Prior General received all the correspondence relative to the launching of collaboration between the Marianum Pontifical Theological Faculty and the Pontifical Gregorian University. 3. Communiqué: Meeting of Provincials in Rio de Janeiro (October 10-15, 2016): Representatives of the PRF (Piedmont-Romagna-France) and ISL (Province of the Isles) Provinces For reasons of health two provincials will be unable to attend the meeting of Priors, Vicar and Delegates Provincial with the General Council. The Prior Provincial of the PRF Province will be represented by his Socius, Fra Claudio M. Avallone; the Prior Provincial of the ISL Province will be represented by his Socius, Fra Vincent M. Coyne. 4. Contract between the Venetian (VEN) and Indian (IND) Provinces The General Curia has received a copy of the Contract between the Venetian and Indian Provinces. COUNCIL SESSION August 24, ANN: Re-assignment of Fra Honorio M. Martín Sánchez to his Province In a letter to the Prior General and the Prior Provincial of the ANN Province dated February 17, 2016, Fra Honorio M. Martín Sánchez expressed the desire to return definitively to the Santissima Annunziata Province. He has spent four years at Monte Senario (the cradle of the Order) and has served one year at the Priory of Santa Maria dei Servi in Valdragone (Borgomaggiore), San Marino. The General Council consulted with Fra Honorio and with the consent of the Prior Provincial (ANN) gave its consent for the Prior General to re-assign Fra Honorio to his Province as of August 28, The General Council is grateful to Fra Honorio for his constant availability and for the service he has performed for his brothers

2 2. Request to determine a location for the European Regional Conference novitiate The General Council discussed a letter dated August 16, 2016 from Fra Sergio M. Ziliani, the Coordinator of the European Regional Conference. On behalf of the Italian Priors Provincial Fra Sergio asks the Prior General in accordance with article 252/a of the Constitutions (Cf. Canon 647 1) to establish next year s ( ) novitiate house in the priory of Santa Maria dei Servi in Bologna. The letter mentions that Fra Bruno M. Zanirato would begin service as Novice Master and that the novitiate is scheduled to begin on September 3, The General Council had some difficulty with the choice of location. Fra Maurizio M. Gabellini had expressed his willingness to serve as Novice Master at Monte Senario. The Council consulted with the Italian Priors Provincial (ANN, PRF, VEN) and unanimously agreed on the following decisions: - Since the required conditions do not exist in Bologna (an effective formation community Cf. Const. 121) the Council does not approve the request; - the Council prefers that the Monte Senario Priory continue to be the location for the novitiate; - the Council is favorable to the appointment of Fra Maurizio M. Gabellini as Master of Novices and Fra Ferdinando M. Perri as the Assistant Master. 3. Examination of the updated draft of the Breve Prontuario Giuridico [Brief Juridical Handbook 2016] Fra Souriraj M. Arulananda Samy presented to the General Council an updated version of the Brief Juridical Handbook that he and Fra Hubert M. Moons prepared. 4. General Councilors: New task assignment Subsequent to the appointment of a new General Councilor, the General Council decided to redistribute the assignments of liaison councilors: Rhett M. Sarabia, ANN, ISL, PHI, ESP, EAF, ZUL, MOZAMBIQUE, SWAZILAND and the African Regional Conference; Sergio M. Ziliani, CAN, PRF, TIR, VEN, the European Regional Conference, the Servite Historical Institute, the Servite Historical Archives, CLIOS and the General Communities. 5. Confirmation of the Acts of the Provincial Chapters of Election PRF and ISL After a discussion with the General Council the Prior General confirmed the Acts of two Chapters of Election: PRF and ISL. 6. PRF: Confirmation of the Provincial Directory modified by the Provincial Chapter of Elections The General Council discussed the modifications of the PRF Provincial Directory made by the Provincial Chapter of Elections and gave its confirmation to the entire text. 7. ISL: Confirmation of Article 17 of the Provincial Directory (Cf. Const. 191/b) The General Council discussed the single revised article of the Provincial Directory for the Province of the Isles and confirmed the revision. The Province can celebrate a Chapter next year (2017) and review the text of its Provincial Directory. COUNCIL SESSION September 2, Committee on the Temporary use of space in the building at Viale Trenta Aprile 6 : first proposal The Committee for the Temporary use of space in the building at Viale Trenta Aprile 6 held a meeting on March 3, The President of the Committee, Fra Jorge Luis M. Jiménez Delgadillo, presented a report on the meeting to the General Council. The Council asked the Committee to meet again. 2. Preparation for the Servite Formation Personnel meeting at Cancun (March 25-31, 2017) The General Secretary for Formation and Studies, Fra Jorge Luis M. Jiménez Delgadillo, presented to the General Council the letter inviting Servite Formation Personnel to the meeting that will take place at Aquamarina Beach Hotel in Cancún, Mexico (March 25-31, 2017). The General Council discussed the letter and then approved it unanimously. 3. USA: Copyright of graphic novel The Seven Friends of Florence After discussing the matter with Fra Piergiorgio M. Mazzoleni, the director of the Centro Edizioni Marianum, Fra Souriraj M. Arulananda Samy, the Secretary for the Communications Center, responded to a letter dated August 16, 2016, from Mr. James Foerster. Mr. Foerster was inquiring about the copyright for the graphic novel The Seven Friends of Florence published by the Communications Center in 2011 in COSMO (nos. 1-2) in five languages (Italian, English, Spanish, French, Portuguese). Forty years have passed since the Canadian Province published the original French version and reserved all rights to itself. The copyright can be said to belong to the Order. Therefore, there is no problem in publishing an English version (The Seven Friends of Florence). We ask only that homage copies be sent to the General Curia. 2

P : Election of Prior Provincial On September 5, 2016, Fra Marcelo M. Henríquez was elected Prior Provincial of the Santa María de los Andes (SMA) Province on the first ballot. We wish him success in his service. 3

4 2. San Marcello-Rome: Showers of grace at San Marcello At 8:30 on the evening of September 16, 2016 the Rector of San Marcello in Rome (Fra Enrico M. Casini, OSM) led the Servites in a celebration of Cecilia Eusepi, a Devotee of Our Lady of Sorrows. It was the third evening of a triduum in preparation for the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. The celebration was a heartfelt experience and a small miracle occurred. In spite of the bad weather some 300 people were in attendance. They came from Rome, Monte Romano (Eusepi s birthplace), Nepi (where her body lies in rest) and other villages in Tuscia. There were friars, sisters and members of the Secular Order as well as others who found Blessed Cecilia ( ) attractive. After a few words of welcome we began a visual presentation of her life: Cecilia Eusepi, il Pagliaccio buono a nulla di Gesù [Cecilia Eusepi, Jesus Good-for-nothing Clown]. Fra Gino M. Leonardi, O.S.M. prepared the presentation. The text was written by Fra Tito M. Sartori, O.S.M., the former Postulator for the Cause of Eusepi s beatification. After the presentation Anna Tibaldi di Guidi spoke about the miracle at Monte Romano that led to Cecilia s beatification. The song Cecilia, luce dell innocenza [Cecilia, Light of Innocence] was sung by its composer, Florence Astaire. There was another video presentation and a classical-contemporary dance directed by Minea de Mattia (three ballerinas took part). During the Liturgy of the Word five texts written by Eusepi were read: (1. Devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows; 2. Servite Tertiary; 3. Company of Our Lady of Sorrows; 4. Model of Charity; 5. Offering of self). The Gospel passage about Mary Magdalene at the tomb (John 20, ) was read by two Mantellate Sisters (Sister M. Magdalena, a Mexican and Sister Claudine, an Ugandan). Fra Camille M. Jacques O.S.M. presided at the celebration. In his homily he talked about the question the Risen Lord put to Mary Magdalene: Woman, why are you crying? Christ comes to us in the time of trial and asks us to open our eyes and resume our life. Fra Camille called on Cecilia Brugnoli and Manuela Pezzato to speak about the wonderful things they have experienced through the intercession of Blessed Cecilia. The assembly then said a prayer to Blessed Cecilia and venerated her relics. Fra Franco M. Azzalli, O.S.M., showed the relics as well as the wallet with a photograph of Cecilia that Mr. Adriano De Guidi held when the miracle took place at Monte Romano. During our service the choir of the Compassionist Sisters accompanied us. The service concluded at 10:10 PM with a prayer of thanksgiving and the Marian hymn Maria composed by Florence Astaire. Everyone present was invited to the ground floor priory corridor to experience the Tastes and Scents of Italy. Delicacies prepared by groups and devotees of the Blessed from places where she had lived were provided. Especially good were the bread from Monte Romano, the Santoiolo wine from Narni (Signor Pietro Ducoli), the biological oil Cerere, the grain BMS from Spoleto, the giglio pastry prepared by the women of Monte Romano parish and the Rotonda pastry designed by Florence Astaire and prepared by Nonna Carla. There was a generosity corner commemorating the Pope Francis Jubilee of Mercy. It included food brought by those who attended the service. Even though it rained all day there was a showers of grace through Blessed Cecilia s intercession. P, O, A Congratulations to Fra Kavingulwa Godefroid M. Paluku ( / ), Kamala Jean-Évangéliste M. Katembo ( / ), Basirika Grace M. Matovu ( / ) and Paul Julius M. Layoo ( / ) on their ordination to the diaconate (September 24, 2016). Congratulations to Fra Ntensibe M. Gyavira ( / ) on his ordination to the priesthood (September 24, 2016). U 1. SSI: Visitation to Colombia June/July 2016 The President of the Servite Secular Institute, Julia Arkell, with her Vice-President, Alexis Pottinger, made a visitation to members in Colombia from 30 June to 12 July. 4

5 We were accompanied by Sr Mary Nolan, a Colombian sister based in Dublin, who acted as interpreter. The main focus of the visit was to support Institute life and to broaden our understanding of our vocation, as experienced in the lives of our Colombian members, the majority of whom live in Bogotá. We visited several members in their homes and met their families. We also participated in meetings of Vowed Members and of Associate Members as well as a joint Scripture study group. It was with great joy that we celebrated Mass together, which included the making of perpetual vows by Lucy Guarin and Yolanda Lagos, and the renewal of temporary vows by Luz Marcela Castellanos. The celebrant was Fr Jorge Moya, the brother of our General Councilor, Clemencia Moya. We enjoyed wonderful hospitality and were truly inspired by the lives of service, the commitment and the dedication of our members. Alexis Pottinger, Vice-President 2. OSSM Hungary: Fraternal visit to Secular Order Fraternities and Lay Groups Fra Souriraj M. Arulananda Samy, the General Secretary for the Secular Order and Lay Groups together with Father Ferenc Bogisich, the National Assistant, and Mrs. Ági Holyné, the National Prioress paid a fraternal visit to the Secular Order Fraternities and Lay groups in Hungary (September 14-19, 2016) - (14 Györ; 15 Budapest and Székesfehérvár; 16 Ózd and Mezökövesd; 17 Eger; 18 Mezökeresztes and 19 Budapest- Kelenvölgy). During these visits we celebrated significant Servite events: 14- Györ two juniors renewed their vows [FIR]; 15 Budapest, we celebrated the 25 th anniversary of ordination of Fra Philip Harry M. Van Dael [TIR]; 17 Eger the Servite Family made a pilgrimage to the Eger Sanctuary and celebrated the reception of four candidates into the Secular Order. The visit was meant to encourage all the members of the Servite Family in Hungary especially the Secular Order and the Lay Groups. We are grateful to the Sisters Servants of Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows of Florence who helped us organize this visit.
