Joe Moons will hold Provincial Visitation at Sacred Heart Community in Louisville, Kentucky, March During that time the Provincial Council will meet March Holy Family Cristo Rey Catholic High School will hold its annual Open House for prospective students on Sunday, March 12. We wish it great success! Holy Cross and St. Paul of the Cross Provinces are collaborating on a Lenten video project. Beginning with Ash Wednesday, we are posting a short video of Fr. Victor Hoagland, C.P., on our website and Facebook page each day during Lent. The videos include a reflection and prayer on the day s Gospel, based on Victor s book, A Lenten Journey with Jesus Christ and St. Paul of the Cross. Sacred Heart Community ran a successful capital improvement campaign, Pillars of the Community, to secure the necessary funds to repair the left pillar at the entrance of the monastery. Extensive water damage has compromised the structure of the pillar. Needed repairs were estimated at $32,000. Through the generosity of our benefactors, $23,000 was raised immediately. The remaining funds were secured in nine days through crowdsourcing on GoFundMe. Repairs on the pillar are scheduled to begin in April. Many thanks to everyone for their generous support! 2 Page 2 Farewell Good Friend... Joe Van Leeuwen died on February 28, in India. A Memorial Mass was celebrated on March 4 at St. Gabriel Minor Seminary Chapel in Kochi. Joe s remains will be returned to the United States. He will be buried in St. Paul, Kansas. The Funeral Mass will be April 1 at St. Francis Church. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. A banner hangs outside of Ashram JXP in Kochi, announcing the Memorial Mass for Joe Van Leeuwen. Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Kariyil preaches the homily during the Mass for Joe. An overflow crowd attended Mass to celebrate Joe s life. Welcome... Holy Name Passionist Retreat Center in Houston, Texas, welcomes John Chambers as their new Development Coordinator. John will oversee fundraising, donor activities and coordinate the Hosted Programs. John brings his experience and knowledge in development, marketing, communication and sphere pastoral to serve the mission of Holy Name. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies in the College of Humanities at the University of Houston-Downtown. Welcome to the Passionist Family, John!

3 Page 3 Configuration of Jesus Crucified... The Passionist Congregation continues to strengthen the restructuring process that it has carried out for the last 16 years. For the members of Holy Cross and St. Paul of the Cross Provinces, this has meant a greater collaboration with other members of the Configuration of Jesus Crucified: the Mexican Cristo Rey Province, the Caribbean Vice-Province of Our Lady of Peace, the Provinces of Calvary and the Exaltation of the Cross in Brazil and Immaculate Conception Province in Argentina. At their annual meeting, held in Rio de Janeiro in January, the members exchanged experiences with the laity of the Passionist Family in Rio de Janeiro and learned about social programs underway in the parishes of the Province of the Exaltation of the Cross. This meeting was also an opportunity for leadership to share their experiences and to strengthen the solidarity in three principal areas of formation, finances and personnel. The Sunday celebration of Mass included the profession of vows of one of the Passionist seminarians from Mozambique. A visit to the famous sights of the surrounding city brought the meeting to a close. Inter-Provincial Council Meeting... Provincials and Councils of the United States and Mexico, along with two groups of Passionist Sisters, gathered for their annual meeting, held this year at Holy Name Passionist Retreat Center in Houston, Texas. The theme of the meeting was Hispanic Ministry in the United States. Dr. Hosffman Ospino, Ph.D., of Boston College, who led the national study for CARA on Hispanic Ministry in Catholic Parishes, was the presenter on Tuesday. He challenged the Councils to redirect resources to a most urgent, hopeful, yet unfulfilled need in the Church today Hispanic youth and young adults born in the US. Dr. Hosffman Ospino. 4 Page 4 Hispanic Outreach Ministry... A Passionist s Tale of Two Cities Clemente Barrón, is giving new meaning to Charles Dickens phrase A Tale of Two Cities. From as far away as the Southern California beach city of Santa Monica, as well as the nearby San Gabriel Valley, nearly 45 Spanish-speaking women and men came to Mater Dolorosa Passionist Retreat Center in Sierra Madre to participate in Clemente s Breve Retiro, an evening of prayer and recollection in preparation for the Lenten Season. Continue reading... St. Paul of the Cross Passionist Retreat and Conference Center... Congratulations to St. Paul s in Detroit, Michigan, for being a finalist in the voting for the I-275 corridor billboard advertisement contest! One vote was randomly selected from the finalist selection to receive a free digital day. Lorraine McFee, a long time retreatant, volunteer, captain and supporter of St. Paul s, received an stating she won the digital day billboard display on I-275 for St. Paul s! St. Paul s had their free digital day on Thursday, February 16, running for 24 hours! Solemn Commemoration of the Passion... Pat Brennan celebrated Mass at St. Paul s, in observance of the Solemn Commemoration of the Passion, a feast proper to the Passionist Congregation, followed by lunch. Thanks to all who prepared and participated in this wonderful day.

5 Page 5 Visitation... Joe Moons conducted visitation at Holy Name Community in February. He also met with some of the staff and the Governing Board of the retreat center. Chris Gibson was one of the presenters at the Busy Persons Retreat in February held at St. Xavier University in Chicago, Illinois. Phillip Donlan and Chris Gibson participated in the Here I Am vocation conference in St. Charles, Illinois. About 600 8th graders from different schools around the area attended. Ash Wednesday... Over 75 people attended Christ the King Passionist Retreat Center for an Ash Wednesday Day of Prayer. John Schork held an Ash Wednesday prayer service with the staff at the Province Development Office in Park Ridge, Illinois.
