NEW BOOKS F R I A R S KENYA: FIRST OCD ORDINATIONS The Kenya region of e Washington Province proudly announces e ordinations of e Order s first two Kenyan priests: Thomas Ochieng Otang a, OCD, and Santulino Lawrence Ekada, OCD. This joyous and historic event took place on 19 July 2003 before a congregation of over a ousand worshipers, during a 10 AM Mass at Our Lady Queen Parish in Karen, not far from our Carmelite Community on e outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya. Bishop Alfred K. Rotich, military ordinary of Kenya, presided, and friars from oer English-speaking regions of Africa as well as all ree provinces of e USA participated. At e same four-and-a-half-hour ceremony, John Damian Adizie, OCD, of Nigeria was ordained to e diaconate. On e following weekends, e newly ordained priests celebrated first Masses in eir home parishes near Busia and Bondo, in e western part of Kenya, and were formally installed as elders. The friars in Nairobi continue eir assistance at Our Lady Queen Parish and are looking forward to building a new house of studies for Kenyan philosophy students very soon. INDIA: KOTESHWAR NEW PRAYER HOUSE OF THE KARNATAKA-GOA PROVINCE Carmel Ashram at Koteshwar, e monastery dedicated to our Lady of Mt. Carmel built and dedicated in e millenium jubilee year has been declared as e official prayer house for e Karnataka- Goa Province in India. It is located in a remote place surrounded by coconut groves just ree kilometers from e Arabian sea and 6 kilometers from e town of Kundapur. It is accessible on e ancient road to Shimoga. It has a few selfcontained rooms, a small library, a small chapel and lot of place for walks and prayer wiout being disturbed by any one.

2 The place is frequented by people only on somedays of e week, enabling e community to dedicate itself fully to prayer and regular life. There is a standing community of ree priests who collaborate wi e neighbouring churches as and when requested wi eir priestly ministry. WASHINGTON: TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CARMELITE INSTITUTE During e weekend of March 2003, e Carmelite Institute hosted a ten anniversary celebration at Whitefriars Hall in Washington, DC. Events included a plenary meeting, an anniversary Mass, and a public concert of Carmelite-related music performed by e Suspicious Cheese Lords, a noted male cappella group specializing in medieval chant and renaissance polyphony. (Their name comes from a humorous mistranslation of e title of a Thomas Tallis motet, Suscipe Quaeso Domine.) The Carmelite Institute, formerly known as e Nor American Carmelite Institute (and not to be confused wi e Washington Province's Institute of Carmelite Studies), was founded in 1993 wi e support of e general administrations of e Carmelite and Discalced Carmelite orders. It is a collaborative effort of e whole Carmelite family in e United States and Canada. Its mission is to promote e following of Jesus Christ rough studies in e Carmelite tradition and by making at tradition available to our Carmelite broers and sisters as well as all ose interested in e study and practice of deeper spirituality. The Carmelite Institute produces books, videotapes, and audio cassettes on Carmelite topics, sponsors Carmelite conferences, and offers bo residential and distance education programs in Carmelite Studies. More information on e Institute and its activities may be found at India: Karnataka-Goa Province THE NEW JAGALUR MISSION India is a country wi a Christian population of just less an 2% amidst one billion, confined to some pockets leaving vast stretches of Interior India wiout any Christian presence. The Church in India is very conscious of its mission to proclaim Christ to our peoples in spite of e challenges of e Hindu nationalists. The Karnataka-Goa province is responding actively to is challenge by taking up a new mission in Jagalur in e diocese of Shimoga (Karnataka), away from any oer Caolic institution, wi no Christian presence among e people of e place. The nearest Caolic Church is at a distance of about 50 km. The formal inauguration of e new Mission took place on e 15 of June, e feast of Most Holy Trinity wi e presence of Rev. Jerald Lobo, bishop of Shimoga along wi Vicar General of e diocese. A few of our Faers along wi e Provincial and oer local people took part. Right now ere is no evidence of any Christians being present in is area. Since direct evangelization is not allowed, a social work centre was opened, followed by a solemn Mass presided over by e bishop. The mission has been dedicated to e honour of e Holy Spirit. Brasil: Association of St. Teresa of Jesus N U N S ASSOCIATIONS: NEW COUNCILS The Association St Teresa of Jesus of Brasil, in its ird ordinary Assembly held at Sao Roque, 5-9 May 2003 elected e following Council of e Association:

João da Cruz - Tremembé-SP AUSTRIA / INNSBRUCK The new Carmel in Innsbruck, Austria, was formerly inaugurated pm e Feast of e Sacred Heart, 27 June When e first Carmel was established in is city from e Carmel in Prague way back in 1846, e foundation was surrounded by green fields. Two decades later wi e construction of a new railstation in e city e situation was to change radically. Innsbruck was now linked up to e important Munich - Rome railway line. The station was located quite close to e Carmel and soon new and high rise buildings were continually being constructed around e Carmel, whose Church had been destroyed during e Second World War. Eventually is left e Sisters wi very little choice but to relocate. A orough search was carried out to find a suitable location, twenty six possible sites were look at. Eventually a place was found for e new construction, anks to e collaboration of important Church and City officials. The new site was on e side of a hill seven hundred and twenty five metres up, in e nor east of e city. There e community transferred at e beginning of May. The new site surrounded by trees not only offers e Sisters a vast panorama of e city, which is situated at e feet of a range of surrounding mountains, but also offers em at silent and pleasant environment at our Holy Faers desired for our monasteries. The Sisters have bought a section of e wood wiin e limits of e cloister. In e name of Fr General, Fr Ulrich Dobhan, Secretary to e Nuns, participated in e formal act of inauguration and handed over e letter of affiliation to four people who had distinguished emselves by eir solicitude on behave of e foundation. At e ceremony ere was a large gaering of e faiful, wi groups of folksingers, scouts and e famous Muhlan Singers. The Archbishop of Salzburg formerly consecrated e Church and e convent and erected e cloister togeer wi Dr Alois Ko Kogasser, e former Bishop of Salzburg and twenty concelebrants. THE CARMELITE FAMILY MEETING OF THE TERESIAN CARMELITE FAMILY IN SICILY Go to my broers. Our Mission. ANNUAL PILGRIMAGE OF THE CARMELITE LAY FAMILY TO LOANO, ITALY The regular annual pilgrimage to e Sanctuary of Our Lady of Carmel in Loane (Liguria) took place on Sunday 8 June 2003, taking part were e Lay Carmelite Family, consisting of e Carmelite Secular Order, e Lay Communities and all e friends of Carmel in Liguria. The central point of e get togeer, besides e Eucharist and our common prayer, was e conference given by Fr Enzo Viviani, Prior of e local Community and Assistant to e Loano OCDS. His eme was Mary, Queen of Peace, a eme which is seen in her humility, her total acceptance of God s will, in accepting to be his handmaid and in meditating in her heart on e all e ings at she did not understand, in e different events in e life of her Son at lead to his dea on e Cross. In e sharing at followed on e eme of e day ere were many questions on how to pray and to be quiet while listening to God. The sharing was most interesting at we had to be called to eat our lunch, which had been waiting for us, as e discussions had become more appetizing an e food. OUR SAINTS CARMELITE PILGRIMS MEET THE HOLY FATHER The Vatican Newspaper, The Osservatore Romano, of e 17 July 2003 wrote in headlines at filled e front page: THE HOLY FATHER GREETS PILGRIMS UNDER THE GAZE OF OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL. The article at followed began: The Holy Faer met wi more an two ousand pilgrims under e gaze of e Blessed Virgin Mary of Mt Carmel, on e morning of July 16. They had come to e audience wi e Pope at his summer residence of Castel Gandolfo, in is The year of e Rosary. On e day of e Feast of Our Lady of Mt Carmel, e Pope, of e Totus tuus, addressing ose present in e courtyard of e Pontifical Palace and to e entire People of God, renewed e invitation to trust in Mary as a model always to be followed, to find in her example inspiration and sure guidance. At e end of e audience e Pope told e crowd: I encourage you to call upon her always and added she will give you bo comfort and hope... Still on e front page, and under e photo of e Pope is a photo of Our Lady of Mt Carmel from Traspontina. Under e heading, Year of e Rosary is e message at e Holy Faer gave to e Polish Pilgrims: Today is e Memory of e Blessed Virgin Mary of Mt Carmel...Since I was a child I too have worn e Scapular of e Blessed Virgin around my neck and under mantle of e Blessed Virgin Mary, Moer of Jesus, I have sought trustingly in her protection. On page 5 we read e messages in a variety of languages and e Chronicle of e Audience. Among e messages are e following at refer to us: 1. In Portuguese: May Our Lady of Mt Carmel, whose Feast we celebrate today, be wi you and protect you. 2. In Polish: I would like to greet all e pilgrims from Poland. Today we celebrate e Memory

5 Our Lady of Mt Carmel. This Feast is particularly dear to all ose who are devoted to e Blessed Virgin. Since I was a child I have worn around my neck e Scapular of e Blessed Virgin Mary, Moer of Jesus, and under her mantle I have trustingly sought protection. I hope at e Scapular will be for everyone, particularly for ose who wear it, a help and protection in time of danger, a seal of peace and a sign of her protection. 3. Today s liturgy of e Blessed Virgin Mary of Mt Carmel gives me e opportunity to show you our Blessed Lady as a model to whom you should seek, and to find in her example inspiration and a sure guide. EDITH STEIN IN THE CHAPEL OF THE ALETTI CENTRE Fr Marko Rupnik wanted to dedicate a place for Saint Theresa Benedict of e Cross, Edi Stein, as protector of dialogue between East and West Europe, in e renovated chapel of e Aletti Centre. The figure of Edi Stein is already present in e mosaics of e Redemptoris Mater Chapel, but now has a place of importance in is place of cultural dialogue. NEW CARMELITE BOOKS received from e editors P. Rafael Mejía Maya, ocd, Los Carmelitas Teresianos en América Latina. Fr Raphael Mejia Maya, ocd, from e Colombian Province, has just published is work on e history of e Carmelite Priories at have been founded in Latin America, including ose at were later suppressed.
