1 September Volume V Issue No. 3 May- June 2017 UNDERWAY: BEATIFICATION OF SR. REINOLDA The cause of the beatification of Sr. Reinolda May is underway as per official letter of B i s h o p X o l e l o Thaddeus Kumalo of Sr. Reinolda t h e d i o c e s e o f Eshowe in his letter dated May 1, 2017 (See next page for full text of the letter ) SEOUL PRIORY RE-ELECTS SR. ROSE MARIE HWANG MADRID COMMUNITY WELCOMES VISITATORS The community of Madrid welcomed the canonical visitators, Mother Angela Strobel and Sr, Ma. Salete da Rocha on June 19. The visitation lasted for four days. Sr. Margarete, the superior of the community shares, Our visitators from Rome arrived safely on June 19. They were able to sustain the Madrid heat so far. On June 23, the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we went to Parla and then to the 'Cerro de los Ángeles' (Hill of the Angels) which is not only a place of pilgrimage but also considered the geographic center of the Iberian Peninsula. On top of the hill is a 14thcentury monastery named Our Lady of the Angels (Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles), as well as the Monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Monumento al Sagrado Corazón). I am grateful for these days of visitation. Before I was pretty nervous because I did not know how it would be but everything went so well. Thanks to God. Sr. Rose Marie The delegates of the Seoul Priory Chapter 2017 re-elected Sr. Rose Marie Hwang as prioress of Seoul Priory on June 20, 2017 for a second term of office of three years in the presence of two general councilors, Sr. Caridad Choi and Sr. Regina Tesch. 5 Congregation Lifestream 5 FATIMA COMMEMORATES CENTENARY huge crowd at the Fatima Square Fatima commemorated the centenary of the apparitions of Our Lady to three children. Hundred years ago Fatima was just a small village without any significance. The siblings Francisco and Jacinta, and their cousin, Lucia, were looking after their families flock of sheep when Our Lady appeared to them on a tree. These apparitions happened to them six times between May and October, on the 13th day of each month. The children generously offered their lives to God, praying and fasting a lot, and with untold courage faced the adversities of their own families and the civil authority. Francisco and Jacinta died as children, victims of the bronchopneumonia epidemic (Spanish Flu) which razed through Europe in 1919 and Initially, Lucia joined the Dorothean Sisters and lived for some time in Spain. Later on, she transferred to the Carmelite Order and lived in Coimbra, Portugal, where she died in St. John Paul II beatified Francisco and Jacinta in 2000, in Fatima, in the presence of Sr. Lucia. Sr. Maria St Jacinta and St. Francisco Now, Pope Francis has canonized these siblings. They are the first non-martyr children to be canonized. Where 100 years ago there were poor pastures and a few miles distant, a small village, there is a big city today. It is the religious center of Portugal that attracts pilgrims from all over the world. This year, to mark the centenary, Pope Francis came and joined the pilgrims for the rosary followed bythe night procession on May 12. Upon arriving at the place of the Apparitions, the Pope spent a long time in silent prayer. It was holy moment of silence that was also observed by the multitude of people that filled the great square of the shrine. On May 13, a huge crowd gathered again in the square to attend the Mass with the canonization. Three of our sisters were present in the square while the others were gathered at home and followed the event on the television. by: Sr. Timótea Kronschnabl, OSB Sr. Rita Sr. Angela Sr. Mary Ignatius Sr. Maria Ko from Nairobi back to her home priory, Seoul Sr. Rita Shoko from Haus St. Benedikt/Generalate District back to her home priory, Peramiho Sr. Angela Park from Seoul back to her former assignment, Bulgaria Sr. Mary Ignatius Aquino from Manila to the community of Benedictine Sisters of Mt. 6 Congregation Lifestream 6 IWE JOURNEYS TO TUTZING BY SR. ANN TERESE DANA, OSB and SR. EUGENE AMAR, OSB Our International Weeks of Encounter (IWE) journey continued in the Mother House, Tutzing, Germany on June 2. Sr. Ruth Schõnenberger, the prioress of Tutzing Priory, shared with us the history of the Mother House before the tour. It was like a continuation of our pilgrimage in Rome. She brought us to the significant areas in the house like the oratory, infirmary and terrace where one can see the Starnberg lake. The lake is memorable to us because we spent our bonding moments not only with our co-iwe participants but with the Sisters from the Mother House. We shared our stories and our experiences. Indeed, we felt unity in diversity. On June 4 we attended the Holy Mass of the Pentecost at St. Josef Parish where we participated actively in the liturgy like being readers and offerers where we had offertory dance. In the evening, we showed our skills in singing and dancing in the auditorium attended by the Sisters and the parishioners. Compline concluded the evening. God has been good to us. He gave us fine weather on the day we went to Alps. We were so thrilled to see the magnificent creation of God. We did not only marvel at the beauty around us but also treasured the moments we had together with Sr. Ruth and some Sisters. We also went to the Abbey of St. Benedict of Ettal. On June 9 we visited the Abbey of St. Ottilien. Fr. Otto was our tour guide. We went also to the old house of our pioneering sisters. After lunch, we went to the grave site of the monks and prayed quietly at the grave of Fr. Andreas Amrhein. Sr. Verena and Sr. Nadya prepared a short liturgy in honor of Fr. Amrhein, our founder. It was a very touching moment for all of us. We are forever grateful to Sr. Ruth Schõnenberger and all Sisters for their kindness. The vibrant liturgy and their angelic voices with different accompaniments made us appreciate more our love for the Opus Dei and the Eucharist. We were inspired by the Sisters of Tutzing in the priory house and Bernried and the community in Haus St. Benedikt. To them we say a big thank you and to M. Angela and to all the Sisters in Rome for their wonderful hospitality. at the Mother House in front of the congregation tree at St. Joseph parish at the alps at the graveyard of Fr. Amrhein
7 Congregation Lifestream 7 GOOD-BYE to ETTISWIL Since 1934 the Missionary Benedictine Sisters have been living in Switzerland. After a few moves, our station in Ettiswil started to operate in Now it was time to say goodbye to Ettiswil after 50 years of life and work. The sisters opened a kindergarten there, built the out-patient nursing home and gave lessons. In 1970, they moved to the monastery, and in September a nursing home for the aged was opened which they took charge of for many years and finally passed it to the Sonnbühl Foundation. On May 21, 2017, we had a farewell mass with the people of Ettiswil, led by Bishop Vicar Ruedi Heim. A musical group sang international songs. BY SR. ELISABETH-MAGDALENA ZEHE, OSB The next day, our confreres arrived from Uznach and we had mass with them and the homedwellers. Afterwards, we had the opportunity to meet and talk with them.. We know that the nursing home for the aged is in good hands. We felt the warm bonding with the representatives of the foundation during the farewell feast. There was a magazine souvenir and a pledge of gift. The foundation gave us a Hollywood swing, which was handed over in a miniature at the joint feast. This is the reason why we in Tutzing, while sitting at the roof terrace often have the people of Ettiswil in our thoughts. Thank you! musical group at the farewell mass a miniature Hollywood swing WELCOME TO OKONGO AND WAKU KUNGO Two juridical communities were formed the first half of the year after getting the approval of the Generalate.
