2 Preparing men today to become your parish priests tomorrow THE SEMINARIAN COLLECTION The Seminarian Collection supports the formation and training of seminarians in the Archdiocese of Boston for service, we pray, as your future priests. Boston is blessed with three local seminaries: Pope Saint John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Saint John s Seminary in Brighton, and Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Chestnut Hill. These institutions rely upon the generosity of all parishioners within the Archdiocese of Boston to continue the important work of priestly formation, and to help meet our annual operating budgets. The occasion of this collection provides a good opportunity to encourage vocations for the priesthood and for religious life. 3 MORE ON THE SEMINARIAN COLLECTION Why does this collection take place on Pentecost Sunday? Pentecost Sunday is the birthday of the Church, when the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles. The Seminaries form future priests to proclaim the Gospel and bring the Sacraments to our parishes. Today we ask you to assist the Seminaries in forming these men to respond to the Holy Spirit, so that they can proclaim to all that Jesus Christ is our Risen Lord. Let us rejoice and be glad! What is the money used for? The Seminaries depend upon the generosity of all of our parishioners to meet their annual operating budgets and to ensure that those committed to the formation of our priests and religious have the resources they need to continue this essential work. Can I support a specific seminarian? This collection supports all of the seminarians currently in formation at all three local seminaries. However, named scholarship opportunities are available to support seminarians at each institution. For details, please contact us individually via our websites below. In what other ways can I support the Seminaries? In addition to your prayers, there are many more ways to support your future priests from sponsoring or hosting small gatherings in your home, to attending fundraising events like our Golf Tournaments, Galas, or Annual Lawn Party, to remembering the seminarians in your will. You are also welcome to donate online at each website (see below). Will we get a chance to meet the seminarians? The seminarians are always eager to meet the people who support them and whom they will serve in the future. You may encounter them in various parishes and ministries throughout the Archdiocese. 5 September 9, 2016 Dear Monsignor/Father/Deacon: In October 2013, we wrote to you regarding protocols for priests of the Archdiocese who are travelling to perform priestly ministry in another diocese. In July 2014, we wrote regarding the protocols necessary when a priest or deacon of another diocese is performing ministry in the Archdiocese of Boston. This letter serves as a summary and reminder of those points. Boston Priests Performing Ministry Outside of Boston 1 When travelling to another diocese for the exercise of any priestly ministry, even concelebrating a Mass, almost all dioceses require a letter of good standing or they have their own form to fill out. In order to cope with the increased volume and complexity of such requests, it is incumbent upon the priest or deacon travelling outside of the Archdiocese: to determine precisely what document the other diocese requires. Our staff is not able to do this research for each priest. Therefore, the request must be as specific as possible. This includes not only the documentation required by the diocese in question, but also all of the details of the ministry to be performed there, the length of the stay in the diocese, the parish or place where the ministry will occur, the ministry to be performed and any other pertinent details; to request the needed documentation from the Pastoral Center well in advance - at least 2 weeks notice; unfortunately, we frequently receive last-minute requests, which result in decreased service levels to other Priests and Parishes. to specify the complete contact name and street address where the letter should be sent. The documentation can also be sent to you and then forwarded to the diocese in question. Unfortunately, due to the high volume of requests, we cannot send the documentation to more than one location. Therefore, if you would like a copy, then you will need to ask for it to be sent directly to you and you may copy it before sending it to its destination. 1 Permanent deacons are to apply for a letter of good standing through the Office of Diaconal Life and Ministry.

6 Priests/Deacons from Outside of Boston Performing Ministry When priests or deacons from outside the Archdiocese wish to perform any ministry within the boundaries of your parish, or at your church or chapel, they are to give you, or allow you to photocopy, a recently obtained (within the last four months) letter of good standing from their local ordinary or religious superior. This need not be elaborate, but should state that he is a priest/deacon of the diocese in good standing and contain the seal of the diocese or religious order. Copies or originals of these letters should be kept on file at the parish office. If the priest or deacon will be performing ministry in the Archdiocese for more than 7 days, he must apply for faculties from the Office of Canonical Affairs and provide a request for faculties form filled out by his bishop/superior. A request for faculties form can be found in English and Spanish. If the priest or deacon is from outside of the United States and is going to be here less than three months, he must provide a copy of his visa. If he is going to be here for more than three months, he must provide a copy of his visa and a copy of the stamp in his passport. Students must also provide a copy of their I-20. All requests for the documentation from the Archdiocese should be sent to Mary Blake in the Office of Canonical Affairs: mblake@rcab.org I would like to reiterate, however, that it is the duty of the priest travelling to determine what the destination diocese requires and to obtain any forms or documentation that they may require. 10 ARCHDIOCESE OF BOSTON Bulletin Announcement 0th Wedding Anniversary Mass Pastoral Planning Evangelization Notices June 11 ~ The Most Holy Trinity, Solemnity The Most Holy Trinity God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit is a Mystery of our faith - not to solve, but to believe and delight in. Three Persons in One God. Most of us learned to make the Sign of the Cross at a very early age. It is a simple but direct statement of belief in the Trinity. On this Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, take a few moments to simply and thoughtfully pray: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of Holy Spirit. Amen. June 18 ~ The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, Solemnity Jesus promise to be with us always is fulfilled in the Eucharist. His words in today s gospel are testimony of this promise - Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him (her). Each time we receive Holy Communion, Christ comes to us. How aware are we of Jesus presence in the Eucharist? Do we open our hearts to him? In a sermon on the Eucharist, St. Augustine urged his parishioners, be what you see, receive what you are the Body of Christ! It is to this truth that we are that we respond, Amen. Let us pray that with each reception of Holy Communion we are more and more the Body of Christ June 25 ~ Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time As we move into the rhythm of day to day life, it can be a challenge to hold fast to the beautiful promise of Christ s presence with us. We need to remember the consolation, the comfort, the hope and joy that we heard throughout the Easter Season. Pray for the grace of openness to the Word of God that will guide our way through the daily trials and joys of this ordinary time. Let us declare with Jeremiah, The Lord is with me, like a mighty champion and let us take this word with us as we go through the week!
