2 Chancellor for Canonical Affairs What Does the Office of the Chancellor for Canonical Affairs Do? Provides general canonical counsel for the Archbishop, chancery staff, clergy, parishes, schools, and lay faithful Serves as a resource for parish business administrators

3 Chancellor for Canonical Affairs Canonical counsel covers any area of Church law, including Archdiocesan law and policy Drafting and notarizing official documents, decrees Structures: parishes, schools, personnel Teaching/doctrinal authority of the Archbishop Sacraments and their administration Temporal goods: finance councils, sale of Church property Penal and disciplinary matters Procedures and Church tribunals Clergy Bulletins (Archdiocesan law)

6 Important for Parish Business Administrators Visiting Clergy ALL clergy ministering in your parish must be cleared through the Chancellor s office, even if it is for a single Mass or liturgical event Direct all inquiries from visiting clergy to submit a letter of suitability to the Chancellor No international clergy may be invited or hosted at the parish until the cleric has obtained the necessary paperwork (Visa, testimonial from home bishop, etc.) Celebrets and Letters of Suitability All clergy from your parish traveling outside the Archdiocese will need these in order to minister

7 Important for Parish Business Administrators Sacraments and Sacramental Records Every cleric needs faculties and permission from the Archbishop in order to minister and administer sacraments Laws about how and where sacraments and liturgies may be celebrated Contact us if you have any questions about sacraments or sacramental records! 9 Archives and Records Management Team Can : In every curia a chancellor is to be appointed whose principal function, unless particular law establishes otherwise, is to take care that acts of the curia are gathered, arranged, and safeguarded in the archive of the curia. 11 Parish Records Retention Schedule Parish Records Retention Schedule: The records retention schedule defines how long you need to keep the most common administrative, personnel, financial, legal, construction & property, and liturgical documents. It is available online at or you can request a hard copy from the department.

Preservation information: Microfilming parish registers (as budgets permit) Advise how to care for damaged, fragile, or high-use materials including information on microfilming and digitizing Assist writing parish histories or preparing retirement or anniversary celebrations
