5 A Reading from Amos [8:4-12] Hear this, you that trample on the needy, and bring to ruin the poor of the land, saying, When will the new moon be over so that we may sell grain; and the sabbath, so that we may offer wheat for sale? We will make the ephah small and the shekel great, and practice deceit with false balances, buying the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, and selling the sweepings of the wheat. YHWH has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Surely I will never forget any of their deeds. Shall not the land tremble on this account, and everyone mourn who lives in it, and all of it rise like the Nile, and be tossed about and sink again, like Please be seated. the Nile of Egypt? On that day, says YHWH, I will make the sun go down at noon, and darken the earth in broad daylight. I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; I will bring sackcloth on all loins, and baldness on every head; I will make it like the mourning for an only son, and the end of it like a bitter day. The time is surely coming, says YHWH, when I will send a famine on the land; not a famine of bread, or a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of YHWH. 6 A Reading from 1 Timothy [2:1-7] First of all, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God; there is also one mediator between God and humankind, Christ Jesus, himself human, who gave himself a ransom for all this was attested at the right time. For this I was appointed a herald and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. Then the manager said to himself, What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes. So, summoning his master s debtors one by one, he asked the first, How much do you owe my master? He answered, A hundred jugs of olive oil. He said to him, Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty. Then he asked another, And how much do you owe? He replied, A hundred containers of Please stand, as you are able. wheat. And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. -6-

The Nicene Creed is a historical statement of faith used by the early Christian community to define orthodoxy. Please join us as you feel called. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son]. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. -7-

8 He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Filioque (Latin for and the son ), the dogmatic formula expressing the double procession of the Holy Spirit, was added to the Nicene Creed by the Western church. The Prayers of the People Parish intercessions appear on page 34. The Prayers of the People were adapted by The Rev. Claudia Heath from prayers written by Canon Susanne Watson of New Song Episcopal Church in the diocese of Iowa. Each prayer is read by a different member of the congregation. Please feel free to participate by reading a prayer. If multiple readers pick up the prayer, feel free to read together. Leader: God of all that is good, in Scripture, you give us your vision for the world. In love, you give us your grace. In wisdom, you give us each other. Through the vision of the Holy Spirit, we learn that your very hope is that we be your presence, your power, and your Body in the world. For this, we give you thanks and, as one body, offer ourselves and each other as we pray. We pray for every church in every place and for every community of faith throughout the world where love is proclaimed as the core of our lives and our living. Today we pray for the success of our Christianity 3.0 program this coming weekend, as we reach out to the unchurched and unhappily churched here and across the country. (The people may add their own prayers silently or aloud.) God who unites us all, Bless your holy people. Leader: Grant us, O Lover of Souls, the grace and wisdom to use new maps when you light up different roads to follow. Help us claim the power of faith shared in community and the gifts that we can use to fulfill the vision of ministry and mission you set before us. This week we pray for reconsideration of education funding in Arizona in light of a recent report that reported our state s cuts were the third deepest in the nation. God of all holy people, Help us remember the promises we made at our baptisms. Leader: God of Justice and Truth, we pray for our nation. Teach us humility, open our hearts to those who are different, give us compassion and understanding, forgive us our sins and restore us to health. May all of us learn from the relatedness of God how to live in love for each other. This week we pray for the victims and all those who have been scarred by the Washington, D.C. Navy yards shooting rampage and we also pray for improved mental health care across America. -8-

Leader: Help us reach out to the world, seeing the beauty of your gifts as well as the urgency of need in all we serve. Show us how to live so that we do not exploit your world or your people in it. This week we pray for the people of Mexico as fierce tropical storms hit opposite ends of the country this week, killing at least 21 people. (People may add their own prayers silently or aloud.) God who makes power of powerlessness, Make us channels of justice and peace. Leader: We pray for those who suffer and for their caregivers and companions. Bless those in our midst who are tired or hurting and those who trust us to pray for them. This week we especially remember the people of Colorado affected by the massive flooding. We pray for all on our prayer list * as well as those we name now. (The people add their own prayers silently or aloud.) God who enfolds us in your own wounds, Open our hearts to know the healing power of your love. Leader: We pray for those who have died, especially Clif Click and Jim Farley. May we know the presence of that cloud of witnesses around us as we seek to be your people. Bless all those who mourn and those who, in their grief, know the sure and certain promise of eternal life in you. (People may add their own prayers silently or aloud.) Holy and gracious One: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Maker of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing the wine to be consecrated. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with Paul, Ninian, Hildegard, Edward Bouverie Pusey, Theodore of Tarsus, John Coleridge Patteson and His Companions, Matthew, Philander Chase, * and all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. * Ninian was a fifth-century Bishop of Galloway. Together with Patrick, he is one of the main links between the ancient Roman-British church and the developing Celtic Christianity of Ireland and Scotland. Hildegard of Bingen was a 12thcentury mystic, poet, composer, dramatist, doctor, and scientist. In a church world of male governance, Hildegard exercised a commanding spiritual authority that has continued to speak to the church through the ages. Edward Bouverie Pusey was a 19th-century British priest who was the acknowledged leader of the Oxford Movement, the revival of High Church teachings and liturgical practices in the Anglican Communion. Theodore of Tarsus was a 7th-century Archbishop of Canterbury who brought order and structure to the British church that remains much the same today. John Coleridge Patteson was the 19th-century Bishop of Melanesia. He and his companions were martyred by -12-

13 All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Creator, now and for ever. AMEN. The Lord s Prayer (traditional) Deacon: As our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Deacon and Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. The Invitation to Communion The Gifts of God for the People of God. Melanesian islanders, whom Patteson had sought to protect from slave-traders. Their death was the seed that produced the strong and vigorous Church that flourishes in Melanesia today. Matthew, one of Jesus disciples, is probably to be identified with Levi, a tax collector mentioned by Mark and Luke. Philander Chase was a 19th-century Bishop of Ohio and Illinois, who founded many congregations and stretched the boundaries of the Episcopal Church in America. -13-

In a church world of male governance, Hildegard exercised a commanding spiritual authority that has continued to speak to the church through the ages. Edward Bouverie Pusey was a 19th-century British priest who was the acknowledged leader of the Oxford Movement, the revival of High Church teachings and liturgical practices in the Anglican Communion. Theodore of Tarsus was a 7th-century Archbishop of Canterbury who brought order and structure to the British church that remains much the same today. John Coleridge Patteson was the 19th-century Bishop of Melanesia. He and his companions were martyred by Melanesian islanders, whom Patteson had sought to protect from slave-traders. Their death was the seed that produced the strong and vigorous Church which flourishes in Melanesia today. Matthew, one of Jesus disciples, is probably to be identified with Levi, a tax collector mentioned by Mark and Luke. Philander Chase was a 19th-century Bishop of Ohio and Illinois, who founded many congregations and stretched the boundaries of the Episcopal Church in America. -29-

Spirit Players: A Play Reading Experience Friday, Oct. 4, 6:30 p.m. in the Bloom Education Center. For the October First Friday play reading the GSP Spirit Players are offering the familiar old chestnut, Arsenic and Old Lace by Joseph Kesselring. This popular comedy needs little introduction. The hilarity of this script centers around the interactions of a wild assortment of characters: two dainty older women who make elderberry wine, their brother who thinks he is Teddy Roosevelt, an escapee from an insane asylum and the mad doctor who will perform plastic surgery on him, a drama critic who hates plays, and his fiancée, the daughter of the minister next door. This reading is on October 4, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Bloom Education Center. No theatre or public speaking experience is necessary; parts will be randomly assigned to anyone who shows up. Non-readers are welcome as well and can participate as an audience. Facilitated by Halsy Taylor and Nanalee Raphael, theatre professionals and afficionados. These periods of silence and seclusion, during which they learned to be alone with their thoughts, led each one to revolutionary action. The similarity to Native American vision quests is evident. Two PowerPoint presentations by Dr. Chuck Dickson, long-time GSP member, will examine the visions and the people like Abraham, Jesus, Buddha, and others whose lives were redirected by their experiences. Film and Fellowship Friday, Oct. 18, 6:30 p.m. in the Bloom Education Center. How about a great gathering, an outstanding movie, and even some food to share? Film and Fellowship will give you all three plus a chance to discuss the implications of the films as each one addresses elements of the Christian faith. Health & Healing Ministries QUILT SUNDAY: September 29 The last Sunday in September has been designated Quilt Sunday. On this day the quilts made by dedicated volunteers will be blessed before they are distributed as gifts. Throughout the year, the quilts are given to community organization, as well as the GSP elderly, children (especially when baptized), and others who wrestle with illness, stress or grief. Quilt Sunday is also an opportunity for the congregation to participate in the ministry. Your donations help the volunteers purchase the many supplies needed to create the beautiful quilts and become a part of the tangible quilt that s shared with people beyond GSP. Quilts will be on display in McBride Hall after both church services on September 29. Come and look! Have an hour or so on Fridays? We are looking for a volunteer to reformat the Sunday bulletin so a parishioner who is blind can read the bulletin using a computer with a speech output device. The Green Church Committee purchased this bin for recyclables. People preparing food in the kitchen no longer have to go outside through the back door to recycle.
