A Reading from Exodus [32:7-14] YHWH said to Moses, Go down at once! Your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have acted perversely; they have been quick to turn aside from the way that I commanded them; they have cast for themselves an image of a calf, and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said, These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt! YHWH said to Moses, I have seen this people, how stiff-necked they are. Now let me alone, so that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them; and of you I will make a great nation. But Moses implored YHWH his God, and said, O YHWH, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you Please be seated. brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? Why should the Egyptians say, It was with evil intent that he brought them out to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from your fierce wrath; change your mind and do not bring disaster on your people. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, how you swore to them by your own self, saying to them, I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever. And YHWH changed his mind about the disaster that he planned to bring on his people. Reader: Psalm 51 Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s People. Thanks be to God. 1 Be gracious unto me, O God, in your tender loving-kindness; * in your great compassion, free me from my shame. 2 Wash me through and through, O God, * and cleanse me from all guilt. 3 For I know that I have strayed from you; * I have turned aside your love. 4 Indeed, I have been wayward from my youth; * I have often gone astray. 5 I have betrayed your word and perverted your justice, * and my heart is filled with grief. 6 In my misery, I cried out to you and said, * O God, I am not worthy of your love. 7 But you have never ceased to care for me; * I am your beloved child. 8 Deep within my heart, faithfulness abides, * and you will teach me to understand that wisdom. 9 Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; * wash me, and I shall be new-fallen snow. -5- The Psalm is read responsively by whole verse.

10 Make me hear of joy and gladness, * that my broken spirit may rejoice. 11 Look on me in your love, * and wash away my shame. A Reading from 1 Timothy [1:12-17] Iam grateful to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because he judged me faithful and appointed me to his service, even though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a man of violence. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus Reader: Sequence Music Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s People. Thanks be to God. 7 Deacon: Diácono: Pueblo: The Sermon The Gospel of Jesus Christ. Praise to you, O Christ. El Evangelio del Jesucristo. Te alabamos, Cristo. A period of silence follows the Sermon, marked with meditation bell. The Nicene Creed -7- Please be seated. Preacher: The Rev. Rosanna Kazanjian Please stand, as you are able. The Nicene Creed is a historical statement of faith used by the early Christian community to define orthodoxy. Please join us as you feel called. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son]. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Filioque (Latin for and the son ), the dogmatic formula expressing the double procession of the Holy Spirit, was added to the Nicene Creed by the Western church. The Prayers of the People Parish intercessions appear on page 35. The Prayers of the People were adapted by The Rev. Claudia Heath from prayers written by Canon Susanne Watson of New Song Episcopal Church in the diocese of Iowa. Each prayer is read by a different member of the congregation. Please feel free to participate by reading a prayer. If multiple readers pick up the prayer, feel free to read together. Leader: God of all that is good, in Scripture you give us your vision for the world. In love, you give us your grace. In wisdom, you give us each other. Through the vision of the Holy Spirit, we learn that your very hope is that we be your presence, your power, and your Body in the world. For this, we give you thanks and, as one body, offer ourselves and each other as we pray. We pray for every church in every place and for every community of faith throughout the world where love is proclaimed as the core of our lives and our living. Today we give thanks for the coming together of the diversity of religious traditions at last week s blessing of the fleet for Humane Borders. (The people may add their own prayers silently or aloud.) God who unites us all, Bless your holy people. Leader: Grant us, O Lover of Souls, the grace and wisdom to use new maps when you light up different roads to follow. Help us claim the power of faith shared in community and the gifts that we can use to fulfill the vision of ministry and mission you set before us. This week we give thanks for the introduction of ITNAmerica in the Tucson area, a low-cost alternative transportation system for seniors and the visually impaired. God of all holy people, Help us remember the promises we made at our baptisms. Leader: God of Justice and Truth, we pray for our nation. Teach us humility, open our hearts to those who are different, give us compassion and understanding, forgive us our sins and restore us to health. May all of us learn from the relatedness of God how to live in love for each other. This week we give thanks for the removal of barriers, resulting in a dramatic rise in Latinos entering college in the U.S. -8-

(People add their own prayers silently or aloud.) God who calls us to Justice and forgives us, Open our hearts to receive your truth. Leader: Help us reach out to the world, seeing the beauty of your gifts as well as the urgency of need in all we serve. Show us how to live so that we do not exploit your world or your people in it. This week we pray for success in the disposal of chemical weapons in Syria and the opportunity to avoid more killing. (People may add their own prayers silently or aloud.) God who makes power of powerlessness, Make us channels of justice and peace. Leader: We pray for those who suffer and for their caregivers and companions. Bless those in our midst who are tired or hurting and those who trust us to pray for them. We pray for all on our prayer list * as well as those we name now. (The people add their own prayers silently or aloud.) God who enfolds us in your own wounds, Open our hearts to know the healing power of your love. Leader: We pray for those who have died, especially Clif Click and Jim Farley. May we know the presence of that cloud of witnesses around us as we seek to be your people. Bless all those who mourn and those who, in their grief, know the sure and certain promise of eternal life in you. (People may add their own prayers silently or aloud.) God of forever and from before time, We praise you for the wonder of eternal life. Leader: God of Joy and Collaboration, we thank you for the blessings and surprises of life. This week, we pray for the successful reopening of Richey Charter School, a partnership between TUSD and the Pascua Yaqui Tribe. 10 (People may add their own prayers silently or aloud.) God of all blessings, We give you heartfelt thanks and praise. Silence The Collect after the Prayers of the People is adapted from the Vanderbilt Divinity Library. Merciful God, your desire to bring us into your commonwealth * is so great that you seek us in the places of our ignorance, and the forgotten corners where we hide in despair. Gather us into your loving embrace, and pour upon us your wise and holy Spirit, so that we may become faithful servants in whom you rejoice with all the company of heaven. Amen. Confession of Sin The Confession of Sin is from The Book of Common Prayer, p Deacon: Let us confess our sins against God, our neighbors, and God s creation. Silence All: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace May the Peace of God be with you. And also with you. Meditation bell will bring us back to silence. * Commonwealth is a reference to the statement in the Exodus reading regarding YHWH making a great nation. Commonwealth in this sense is defined as a community of shared interests. -10-

The Liturgy of the Table Offertory Sentence Offertory Music Table Chant Please be seated. Please stand, as you are able. The Great Thanksgiving God is with us. God is present here. Rejoice! Lift up your hearts. We lift our hearts to the Most High. Let us give thanks to the Holy One. It is right to offer thanks and praise. Eucharistic Prayer A is adapted for inclusive language from The Book of Common Prayer, p It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Creator God, maker of heaven and earth. For by water and the Holy Spirit you have made us a new people in Jesus Christ, to show forth your glory in all the world. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever say this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: -11-

Celebrant and Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Please stand or kneel, as you are able. Holy and gracious One: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Maker of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing the wine to be consecrated. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Deacon: Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O God, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with Paul, Constance and Her -12-

Companions, Alexander Crummell, Harry Thacker Burleigh, John Henry Hobart, John Chrysostom, Cyprian, James Chisholm, * and all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Creator, now and for ever. AMEN. The Lord s Prayer (traditional) Deacon: As our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Deacon and Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. * Constance and Her Companions included Sisters of St. Mary in Memphis, Tennessee. When the Yellow Fever of 1878 struck, they along with priests from The Cathedral, three physicians, and some nurses stayed in the most infected region of the city to care for those in need. Only two of the workers escaped the fever and survived. Alexander Crummell was a 19th century African-American who discerned a call to the priesthood, but was dismissed as a candidate for Holy Orders and rejected for admittance to General Seminary. He would eventually get ordained, serve as a missionary to Liberia, and work to establish a national Episcopal church there. Harry Thacker Burleigh was an American singer, composer, and arranger at the turn of the 20th century who did more than anyone else up to his time to make available the musical and spiritual riches of the American Negro spiritual to vast audiences. John Henry Hobart was one of the leaders who revived the Episcopal church, following the two decades of its independent life after the American Revolution. John Chrysostom was a fourth-century Bishop of Constantinople, one of the greatest preachers in the history of the church, and one of the great saints of the Eastern Church. Cyprian was a rich, aristocratic, and cultivated rhetorician in North Africa in the third century, who converted to Christianity and became Bishop of Carthage. His position prevailed in the Novatian heresy. He was persecuted under the Emperor Valerian and beheaded in 258. James Chisholm was a 19th-century Rector of St. John s Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, Virginia. As health care professionals fled during the yellow fever epidemic, he stayed to care for those with the disease, eventually contracted the fever, and died. -13-

In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God. Amen. -24-

* We pray for Dianne Bret Harte; the family and friends of Clif Click; Chris Cole; Jay Elliston; Oma "Sam" Guard; Joyce Henderson; Christine Nelson; Suzanne Nystrom; Ana Ortiz; Maribel Ortiz; Elise Petropoulos; Susan Southwick; David Wachter; Lee; Francesca Jarvis; Tony Jones; Jack and Jean Leer; Cindy Osche; David Shaw; Peggy Southwick; Beryl Todd; Mary Wilcox; Amy, Phil & Vince; Brian, Martha & Nick; Charlie; Jerry & Rondy; Monica & Carri; Nichole; Rob. -25-

Leader: God of Joy and Collaboration, we thank you for the blessings and surprises of life. This week, we pray for the successful reopening of Richey Charter School, a partnership between TUSD and the Pascua Yaqui Tribe. May we continue to lead each other to even better ways to serve You and our neighbor and bring dignity to everyone we encounter. (People may add their own prayers silently or aloud.) God of all blessings, We give you heartfelt thanks and praise. Silence The Collect after the Prayers of the People is adapted from Prayers for an Inclusive Church by The Rev. Steven Shakespeare. God of the dirtied hands, the wandering feet; you seek out the lost before they ever turn to you: take us to the places we have abandoned to encounter a new community outside our fortress walls; through Jesus Christ, the Searching One. Amen. Confession of Sin The beginning and ending of the Confession are adapted from Janet Morley, All Desires Known. The middle stanzas are adapted from Creator God by Douglas Galbraith, The Pattern of our Days. Deacon: Let us confess our sins against God, our neighbors, and God s creation. All: O God, you search us out and know us, and all that we are is open to you. We confess that we have sinned. When we use our power to dominate and our weakness to manipulate; When we live within our limits, touching the bounds only for reassurance; When we distrust visions and dreams, and seek to destroy the visionary; When we welcome your gifts only to entertain, but not to change us; When we fail to integrate spirit and flesh and forfeit our wholeness and dignity; We ask for your forgiveness and healing. Deacon: We turn to you, O God of infinite compassion; We renounce evil; We claim your love; We choose to be made whole. Amen. -26-

God, the Creator brings you new life. God, the Redeemer, forgives you and rescues you. God the Sustainer lifts you up to live in the Spirit. 28 Prayer over the Gifts The Prayer over the Gifts is from A New Zealand Prayer Book. Giver of life, receive all we offer you this day. Let the Spirit you bestow on your Church continue to work in the world through the hearts of all who believe. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving The Great Thanksgiving is adapted from Steven Shakespeare s Eucharistic Prayer 3 in Prayers for an Inclusive Church. God is with us. God is present here. Rejoice! Lift up your hearts. We lift our hearts to the Most High. Let us give thanks to the Holy One. It is right to offer thanks and praise. Lifegiving God, your word speaks in the void, calling into being things that are not, inviting us to share your work of creation. We thank you for the ages long of gathering stars and cooling earth, of life evolving and waking eyes of wonder. We thank you for the creatures with whom we share the world, for their lives so different from our own and the richness they reveal. We thank you for the Son of Man, formed from Mary s flesh and nurtured by her faith; he walked the growing earth and proclaimed a fearless kingdom of bird and lily, child and stranger, the beggar and the blind. On the cross, he joined the labor of all creation s yearning; in his rising, he hallowed all flesh to bear the glory of God; he gives the brooding Spirit to bring to birth a living hope. Therefore, with all that has life through him, with animals and angels and all who hope for a new creation, we share the song of love which sounds from all eternity: -28-

Sanctus (Holy) Please stand or kneel, as you are able. We ask that your Holy Spirit will fall upon us + and upon these gifts + that these fragile, earthly things may be to us the body and blood of our brother Jesus Christ; who, on the night that he was betrayed, gathered with his faltering friends for a meal that tasted of freedom. Calling them to his table, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said: This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me. In the same way after supper, he took the cup, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, whenever you drink it, to remember me. As on that night, so here and now he offers himself in touch and taste beyond what all words can hold. Deacon: Great is the mystery of faith People & Christ has died Christ is risen Christ will come again. -29-

Therefore, we come to him in whom all is created in heaven and on earth, whose cross and resurrection make all things new. People & We offer this to you, asking you to smile upon the gift we bring, for you alone are the Giver and Christ s the gift through which we live once and for all. Through him who was emptied to bear your fullness we make our prayer with Paul, Constance and Her Companions, Alexander Crummell, Harry Thacker Burleigh, John Henry Hobart, John Chrysostom, Cyprian, James Chisholm, * and all created life to the glory of the God who fills all in all now and for ever. -30-

It s Friday & Saturday, September 27 & 28, 7 9:30 p.m. This 2-night seminar will address popular thought about Christianity in the 21st century. We think they just don t know us! Please invite at least 5 friends to this event. According to the odds, this will ensure that one will come. Assure them you re not trying to convert them, and that you re not necessarily trying to get them to come to Sunday services. Here s where you can lead them for more info: If they like what they hear, they can come hear Steve preach Sunday morning. He ll be talking about Bringing It All Together: Why Christianity Is Still Relevant. Don t miss this seminar! Coffee Hour Hospitality We d like to make coffee hour self-supporting. So, in an effort to have the wealth spread evenly across the various Sundays each month, we ll ask folks to provide goodies based on the first letter in their last names:! The first Sunday of each month: last names that begin with letters A - F! The second Sunday of each month: last names that begin with letters G - L! The third Sunday of each month: last names that begin with letters M - R -36-

! The fourth Sunday of each month: last names that begin with letters S - Z Our hope is that by providing some sort of schedule, we will have something delicious to offer consistently and have every Sunday offer a feast rather than have uneven episodes of feasts and famines. Of course, anyone inspired to share good food on additional Sundays is welcome to do so. If they're still available, we could use soup, tuna, peanut butter, canned ravioli, socks, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, and snacks. The store is located on Speedway at Craycroft. -41-

EXCITING RECYCLING NEWS Some of you may have noticed the large blue receptacle that has been in the Grace St. Paul s kitchen this last month. The Green Church Committee purchased this bin for recyclables. People preparing food in the kitchen no longer have to go outside through the back door to recycle. Please make good use of the bin and help GSP keep recyclable items out of the landfill. Together we can have a greener church. Do you have 45 minutes to spare once a week? Or once a month? Bread from the Pantry is looking for drivers to collect and deliver bread on different days during the week. Volunteers can sign up for the same day every week or the same day once a month. We ll work with your schedule! Volunteers need a good-sized sedan or small SUV and need to be comfortable working alone in the evening. Volunteers collect bread from Beyond Bread (on Campbell south of Ft. Lowell) on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The bread is collected at 8 p.m. and delivered to GSP. If you re interested or would like additional details, please call Bill Trujillo at Thank you! Parish Membership & Administration We believe everyone who comes to Grace St. Paul s has something to offer this community, and we are happy to welcome you. Information forms are available in the church office Monday through Friday, and in McBride Hall at the Welcome Table on Sundays from 9 a.m. to noon. GET YOUR NAME TAG! If you don t already have a name tag, please sign up for one at the Welcome Table in McBride Hall or on the bulletin board across from the Welcome Table. HOW DO I SUBMIT ITEMS FOR THE SUNDAY BULLETIN? Please send bulletin announcements to David Wachter at gsp1@dakotacom.net. Please make prayer list requests by calling the church office at and speaking with the Office Welcome Team volunteer, or by sending them directly to David Wachter at gsp1@dakotacom.net. The deadline for the Sunday bulletin is 4 p.m. on the preceding Wednesday. Prayer list requests for the bulletin may be made until 4 p.m. on Wednesday this week. Thanks! HOW DO I SCHEDULE AN EVENT AT GSP? If you would like to schedule a meeting or event at Grace St. Paul s, contact KiKi Fenik, GSP s Parish Administrator, in the church office; please her at ParishAdmin@grace-stpauls.org.
