1 KING S COLLEGE CHAPEL SERVICES AND MUSIC MICHAELMAS TERM 2015

2 NOTICES SIR DAVI D WILLCOC KS It was with great sadness that we learnt of the death of Sir David in September. His contribution to music at King s was exceptional and he was a much loved as well as a greatly admired man. On Sunday 22 November there will be a concert in his honour in place of our normal service of Choral Evensong. Details will be made available nearer the time on the King s College website. CO LLEGE CH A P L A I N The Reverend Andrew Hammond joins us this term as Chaplain. Andrew is no stranger to King s having studied for an MPhil here as part of his preparation for ordination at Westcott House. Andrew comes to us from St Mary s Willesden where he was the vicar. Before that he was a Minor Canon and Succentor at St Paul s Cathedral and a curate in St John s Wood. We welcome him warmly and look forward to the contribution he will make to our liturgy and life through his ministry here. COLLECTI ON S AT SERVI CES On Sunday mornings we make a collection to support two charities which have been suggested by members of the College community. This term thesearethearthurrankhospiceincambridge; andacharityinmumbai called Snehasadan which rescues orphan and runaway children from the railway stations and brings them up in safe houses. Last term s Sunday morning collections raised 1,865 for the local charity Wintercomfort, and 1,393 for Médecins Sans Frontières. At all other services and at organ recitals, you are invited to support the work of the Chapel and Choir by giving to the retiring collection. Please use the envelope provided, including your details if you are a UK taxpayer, so that we can benefit from Gift Aid: this way the government adds 25% to your donation. If you would prefer to make a donation at a later date, please either send a cheque to the Dean, the Revd Dr Stephen Cherry, King s College, Cambridge CB2 1ST; or dean@kings.cam.ac.uk for information on ways to make significant or ongoing contributions to our work. 3 SUND AY PREAC HERS TH IS TERM This term we continue to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the completion of the stonework of the Chapel by extending the sermon series King s Divines, which commemorates members of College who have made an exceptional and distinctive contribution to Christian theology, spirituality or worship. This term we have sermons on A.H. Mann by Professor Nick Marston, and Charles Simeon by Bishop Graham Kings. We also have a special sermon about our Founder King Henry VI by Professor Eamon Duffy. Earlier this year we have heard sermons about Brooke Fosse Westcott, Benjamin Whichcote, Orlando Gibbons and Eric Milner White, all of which can be read on the King s College website. Also preaching for us this term are Bishop Robert Innes (KC 1979), Bishop in Europe who was an undergraduate here and Canon Chris Chivers, the new Principal of Westcott House who was Lay Chaplain and Housemaster at King s College School between 1989 and October The Revd Dr Stephen Cherry Dean 11 October The Revd Andrew Hammond Chaplain 18 October Professor Nicholas Marston Fellow King s Divines A. 4 MU S I C We have introduced a new time for the weekly Saturday organ recitals, which were instituted by Harold Darke when he was acting organist during World War II. Recitals begin at 6.40 p.m. and last about 40 minutes. There is no recital on 17 October. In our continuing series of recitals by former organ scholars (as part of the 500th celebrations), we welcome John Butt (KC 1979), Tom Winpenny (KC 2003), David Goode (KC 1991), Daniel Hyde (KC 2000), James Vivian (KC 1993) and Ashley Grote (KC 2001). Epiphany through music is the title of a short festival of modern music, 9 11 October, featuring the contribution of King s musicians to the contemporary musical scene. It is another in the series of events which celebrate the 500th anniversary of the completion of the stonework of the Chapel. The music of a number of distinguished King s composers will be featured in services and concerts, and alumni will be well represented among the performers. During the following weekend, October, we shall welcome members of the Howells and the Stanford societies to our services, and music by these composers will feature strongly. Wednesday 11 November sees a special concert to mark the forthcoming restoration of the Harrison & Harrison organ. Former organ scholar Thomas Trotter (KC 1979), will be the soloist, and the performance will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. On Wednesday 18 November, the Choir takes part in a performance of Arvo Pärt Passio. This work again features the organ prominently, as does Messiaen La Nativité du Seigneur, which Stephen Cleobury will play on Thursday 17 December. [ 4 ]

5 SEATI NG I N CHAPEL The top stalls in the choir area are reserved for members of King s College and their guests. Members of the University are invited to make themselves known the Chapel staff and may be invited to sit in the sub-stalls. ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS SERVICES The PROCESSION FOR ADVENT is primarily intended for members of the College. Nonetheless we are glad to admit any for whom a seat can be found at around 5.45 p.m. from the queue that invariably forms. The CHRISTMAS EVE CAROL SERVICE was originally conceived as a gift to the City of Cambridge and it remains a gift from the College to the wider world. Those hoping to be able attend need to be prepared to queue for several hours in advance. The queue is admitted from 1.30 p.m. The service runs from 3.00 p.m. until 4.30 p.m. and is broadcast by radio to an audience of millions around the world. We regret that this service is not suitable for very young children. A limited number of seats are available for those unable to queue. Please see the College website for details of how to apply. Our SUNG EUCHARIST on Christmas Day begins at a.m. Again a queue forms, and the congregation is admitted from a.m. The service is expected to last about 90 minutes. All are most welcome. Further details about these and all our services are available on the College website. [ 5 ]
