1 Michaelmas Term 2015 Services and Music Magdalen College Oxford
2 We welcome you to our worshipping community at Magdalen. Prayer and praise have been offered to God in this place since the fifteenth century, when the College was founded by William of Waynflete, Bishop of Winchester. The statutes of 1480 make provision for a Choir comprised of sixteen boy Choristers and a number of adult Clerks, that the worship of God, from whom all good things come, might be increased more widely and better sustained. That tradition continues unchanged today. The Choirmaster at Magdalen retains the ancient Latin title Informator Choristarum, and among those who have held the post over the centuries are John Sheppard, Daniel Purcell, Sir John Stainer, Sir William McKie, and, in more recent years, Dr Bernard Rose. It is the aim of the Dean of Divinity and the Informator Choristarum always that our services here should be dedicated to the glory of God. Our music is not an end in itself but part of a larger whole. We hope that in the singing and in the silence, in the spoken word and in the beauty of this house of God, you will feel that greater presence, and be blessed by the peace that passes all understanding. Daniel Hyde Informator Choristarum Michael Piret Dean of Divinity
3 Michaelmas Term 2015 Services listed in bold type are sung by the College Choir Our retiring collections will help support the daily life and work of the Chapel and Choir, especially our charity for this term, the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
4 Services Services are normally sung by Magdalen College Choir (men and boys). With the exception of 31 October and 28 November, services on Saturdays are sung by Magdalen Consort of Voices (men and women). Tuesdays are sung by boys alone, and Fridays are sung by men alone. During the school half-term holiday, services from 23 to 30 October will be sung by men alone. Details of how to order tickets for the Advent and Christmas Carol Services may be found in the listings for the last week of term. Organ music Organ music plays in integral part in our liturgy. Alexander Berry is our Assistant Organist; Anna Lapwood begins her third year as Organ Scholar and William Fox joins us as our new first year Organ Scholar. Between them, they play the organ for the majority of the services in Chapel. Choir Recordings and Concerts There are three recent CD releases which have been attracting widespread critical acclaim. Buxtehude s Membra Jesu, nostri, John Ward s Fantasies and Verse Anthems and Matthew Martin s Jubilate Deo all involve the Choir. Copies of all available choir recordings may be purchased from the Bursary; please celia.brown@magd.ox.ac.uk for more information. Away from Oxford, the Choir will be singing a Christmas Concert in London s Cadogan Hall on 11 December, and will then be giving a performance of Handel s Messiah at the Sheldonian on 12 December. Membership of the Choir Daniel Hyde is always pleased to hear from prospective applicants for Choristerships, Academical Clerkships and Organ Scholarships.
