WELCOME VISITORS We extend a warm welcome to all who are visiting with us today and hope you will return to worship with our community of faith again. If you would like to know more about our ministry in downtown and metropolitan Pittsburgh, please speak to a pastor, any of our members, or visit Our liturgy incorporates historic practices of the Western Christian tradition, aspects of which may be unfamiliar to some. We hope this bulletin will serve to welcome our visitors and be an aid to those who seek to participate in our worship of God. HOLY COMMUNION is offered by invitation of the Lord himself. All baptized believers who trust that Christ is present in the Eucharist, regardless of denomination, are invited to receive the Blessed Sacrament. To receive the Sacrament, come to the altar rail by way of the center aisle and return to your pew by the side aisles. The wine may be received by drinking directly from the chalice, by dipping the host in the chalice, or with an individual glass available on tables next to the front pews. Please indicate to the pastor if you need a gluten-free wafer. Those, who, for any reason, are unable to receive bread or wine, may be assured that they still receive the whole Christ by receiving only the bread or the wine. If you would like communion brought to you in your seat, please let an usher know. Those who choose not to commune may come forward and verbally request a blessing. If you are not yet baptized, the pastors would welcome conversations about the Sacrament. YOUNG CHILDREN Jesus said, Let the little children come to me. The presence of children in worship, even when they are wiggly and noisy, is a gift to the Church and a reminder that our parish is growing. You are welcome to sit toward the front where they can see more easily. Worship Tool Kits for little ones are available at the rear of the nave with some items to help them engage in worship. A family restroom and a nursery are available downstairs. We encourage you to bring your children forward for a blessing at communion if they if they do not do yet not receive yet receive the Sacrament. the communion 3

MAUNDY THURSDAY THE HOLY EUCHARIST WITH FOOTWASHING AND STRIPPING OF THE ALTAR April 18, :00 PM Thank you for silencing your electronic devices prior to worship. THE PRELUDE Pange Lingua Gloriosi Sam Batt Owens Ubi Caritas et Amor Gerald Near The people stand as the bells peal. THE ENTRANCE PSALM Psalm 51 LBW Tone 5 Sung antiphonally, Men / Women 1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your lovingkindness;* in your great compassion blot out my offenses. 2 Wash me through and through from my wickedness,* and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions,* and my sin is ev- er before me. 4 Against you only have I sinned* and done what is evil in your sight. 5 And so you are justified when you speak* and upright in your judgment. 6 Indeed, I have been wicked from my birth,* a sinner from my mother s womb. 7 For behold, you look for truth deep within me,* and will make me understand wisdom secretly. 8 Purge me from my sin, and I shall be pure;* wash me, and I shall be clean indeed. 4

9 Make me hear of joy and gladness,* that the body you have broken may rejoice. 10 Hide your face from my sins,* and blot out all my iniquities. 11 Create in me a clean heart, O God,* and renew a right spir- it within me. 12 Cast me not away from your presence,* and take not your Holy Spirit from me. 13 Give me the joy of your saving help again* and sustain me with your boun- tiful Spirit. 14 I shall teach your ways to the wicked,* and sinners shall re- turn to you. 15 Deliver me from death, O God,* and my tongue shall sing of your righteousness, O God of my salvation. 16 Open my lips, O Lord,* and my mouth shall pro- claim your praise. 17 Had you desired it, I would have offered sacrifice,* but you take no delight in burnt-offerings. 18 The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit;* a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. 19 Be favorable and gra- cious to Zion,* and rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. 20 Then you will be pleased with the appointed sacrifices, with burnt-offerings and oblations;* then shall they offer young bullocks up- on your altar. THE INSTRUCTION P In this Lenten season we have heard our Lord's call to intensify our struggle against sin, death, and the devil all that keeps us from loving God and each other. This is the struggle to which we were committed at Baptism; God's forgiveness and the power of his Spirit to amend our lives continue with us because of his love for us in Jesus, our Savior. Within the community of his Church, God never wearies of giving peace and new life. In the words of absolution we receive forgiveness as from God himself. This absolution we should not doubt, but firmly believe that thereby our sins are forgiven before God in heaven, for it comes to us in the name and by the command of our Lord. 5

We who receive God's love in Jesus Christ are called to love one another, to be servants to each other as Jesus became our servant. Our commitment to this loving service is signified in the washing of feet, following the example the Lord gave us on the night before his death. P It is, however, in the Holy Communion that the members of Christ's body participate most intimately in his love. Remembering our Lord's last supper with his disciples, we eat the bread and share the cup of this meal. Together we receive the Lord's gift of himself and participate in that new covenant which makes us one in him. The Eucharist is the promise of the great banquet we will share with all the faithful when our Lord returns, the culmination of our reconciliation with God and each other. THE CONFESSION OF SINS P Let us kneel and make confession to God. Silence is kept The people kneel. C Almighty God, merciful Father: I, a troubled and penitent sinner, confess to you all my sins and iniquities with which I have offended you and for which I justly deserve your punishment. But I am sorry for them, and repent of them, and pray for your boundless mercy. For the sake of the suffering and death of your Son, Jesus Christ, be gracious and merciful to me, a poor sinful being; forgive my sins, give me your Holy Spirit for the amendment of my sinful life, and bring me to life everlasting. Amen P Almighty God in his mercy has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake forgives us all our sins. Through his Holy Spirit he cleanses us and gives us power to proclaim the mighty deeds of God who called us out of darkness into the splendor of his light. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen The people are seated. 6

Those who desire to receive individual absolution come forward and kneel at the altar rail. The pastor lays both hands on each person's head and says: P In obedience to the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, I (+) forgive you all your sins. C Amen When all who desire individual absolution have received it, the people stand. THE PRAYER OF THE DAY P Let us pray. Holy God, source of all love, on the night of his betrayal, Jesus gave his disciples a new commandment: To love one another as he had loved them. By your Holy Spirit write this commandment in our hearts; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen The people are seated. THE FIRST LESSON Exodus 12: The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: 2 This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you. 3 Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household. 4 If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbor in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it. 5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a year-old male; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. 6 You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; then the whole assembled congregation of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight. 7 They shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. 8 They shall eat the lamb that same night; they shall eat it roasted over the fire with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 9 Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted over the fire, with its head, legs, and inner organs. 10 You shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn. 11 This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. 7

It is the passover of the LORD. 12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human beings and animals; on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD. 13 The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. 14 This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the LORD; throughout your generations you shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance. L The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. THE PSALMODY Psalm 116:1, Plainsong Tone 8.1 Sung by the Choir I love the Lord, because he has heard the voice of my supplication, because he has inclined his ear to me whenever I called upon him. How shall I repay the Lord for all the good things he has done for me? I will lift up the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord. I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his servants. O Lord, I am your servant; I am your servant and the child of your handmaid; you have freed me from my bonds. I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call upon the name of the Lord. I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people, In the courts of the Lord's house in the midst of you, O Jerusalem. THE SECOND LESSON I Corinthians 11: For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." 25 In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. L The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. 8

The people stand. THE VERSE Sung by the choir John W. Becker I give you a new commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. John 13:34 THE HOLY GOSPEL Saint John 13:1-17, 31b-35 P The Holy Gospel according to Saint John, the thirteenth chapter: 1 Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. And during supper 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, 4 got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" 7 Jesus answered, "You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand." 8 Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no share with me." 9 Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!" 10 Jesus said to him, "One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you." 11 For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said, "Not all of you are clean." 12 After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord and you are right, for that is what I am. 14 So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. 16 Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. 17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. 31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. 9

32 If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. 33 Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, 'Where I am going, you cannot come.' 34 I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." P The Gospel of the Lord. The people are seated. THE SERMON The Reverend Jennifer Peters McCurry THE WASHING OF FEET The pastors lay aside their vestments and wash the feet of a representative group of parishioners. As the footwashing proceeds, the congregation stands to sing the Hymn of the Day: THE HYMN OF THE DAY Where Charity and Love Prevail LBW

The people are seated. If time allows, the people sing the following refrain until the conclusion of the footwashing: THE PRAYERS A Let us kneel to pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Silence is kept The people kneel. A O Lord, by your command and example you taught us to love one another. Help us to share your love with the unlovable and the outcast. Lord, in your mercy, C Hear our prayer. A Bless your holy, catholic Church. Unite her people in faithfulness to you and in care for one another. Bless her bishops and pastors. Guide them in your truth and make them obedient stewards of your sacred mysteries. Bless also the ministry of deacons, musicians, and lay leaders. Inspire them to serve with zeal and devotion. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A You give us yourself, body broken and blood spilled, as the true food of life. Deepen our devotion to your Eucharistic presence and equip us to care for the physically hungry and the spiritually starved. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. 11

A Bless the pastors and people of our sister churches downtown: First Presbyterian Church, Smithfield United Church of Christ, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, and Saint Mary of Mercy Roman Catholic Church. Draw us closer to one another in faith and in ministry to your people. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A Guide the nations of the world in the way of peace. Put an end to terrorism and violence, and let your righteousness prevail in all places. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A Bestow your care and protection on Pittsburgh, the city we love and serve. Enable its people to live in harmony with one another and in perfect safety. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A Comfort, heal, and sustain those who are broken in body, mind, or spirit, especially and those we name in our hearts. Silence is kept Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A O Lord, by your command and example you taught us to love one another. Help us to share your love with the unlovable and the outcast. Lord, in your mercy, C Hear our prayer. A Join our prayers with those of blessed Mary, Mother of our Lord; John the forerunner; the prophets, apostles, and martyrs; all the saints; and all who rest in you. Grant that we may one day find our place with them at the table of your heavenly banquet. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. C Amen The people stand. THE EXCHANGE OF PEACE P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you. 12

The people offer each other the sign of peace, saying Peace be with you. The people are seated as the gifts are brought forward. THE OFFERING OF OUR GIFTS CHOIR ANTHEM: Draw Nigh and Take the Body of the Lord Eric Thiman Draw nigh and take the body of the Lord, and drink by faith the blood for you outpoured. Saved by his body, hallowed by his blood, with souls refreshed we render thanks to God. Salvation's Giver, Christ the only Son, by his dear cross and blood the victory won. Offered was he for greatest and for least, himself the Victim and himself the Priest. He feeds the hungry with the Bread of Heaven, and living streams to those who thirst are given. O Judge of all, our only Savior thou, in this thy feast of love, be with us now. Amen As the gifts are presented, the people stand. THE OFFERTORY PRAYER A Let us pray. Lord Jesus, as you blessed the Supper your disciples prepared for you, consecrate and use the offerings we have brought. And come among us to renew your promise that we will sit at your table, eating and drinking with you what you have prepared. We bless you now and evermore. C Amen (Matthew 26:29) SURSUM CORDA 13

THE PREFACE P It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, holy Father, through Christ our Lord; who on the tree of the cross gave salvation to all, that, where death began, there life might be restored, and that he, who by a tree once overcame, might by a tree be overcome. And so, with the Church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: SANCTUS THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER P We give you thanks, O Lord our God, for the wonders of your love and mercy. We praise you for the goodness you showed to your people Israel, leading them after your Passover, from their bondage in Egypt to the land of promise. We praise you for your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave us the new Passover in this Holy Supper. 14

P As he took his place at the table with his disciples, we remember how, as he washed their feet, he gave them the new commandment to love one another. Enduring the suffering and shame of the cross, reconciling us to you. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. C Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. P Loving Father, we celebrate this Eucharist, recalling our Lord s agony in the garden, his holy passion and his life-giving resurrection. We await his coming as Lord of the new creation, when all people shall serve one another with love and rejoicing in his kingdom. C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. P Send your Holy Spirit among us, and upon this Bread of Life and this Cup of Blessing, that through our Lord s life-giving body and blood we may ever rejoice in the forgiveness of sins and be sanctified by the truth of his cross. C Amen. Come, Holy Spirit. P Join our prayers with those of your servants of every time and every place, and unite them with the ceaseless petitions of our great high priest until he comes as victorious Lord of all. 15

THE LORD S PRAYER P 16

THE FRACTION P Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper. C Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed. The people are seated. THE COMMUNION OF THE FAITHFUL We welcome all baptized believers who trust that Christ is present in the Eucharist to receive the Blessed Sacrament, regardless of denomination. Come by way of the center aisle. Return to your pew by the side aisles. Further instructions are at the front of the bulletin. HYMN: O Christ, Thou Lamb of God LBW

CHOIR CANTICLE: O Sacred Banquet John W. Becker When all have communed the people stand. THE POST-COMMUNION BLESSING P The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. C Amen THE POST-COMMUNION PRAYER A Let us pray. To eat this bread and to drink this cup is to know that you, O Lord, have died on the cross for the life of your friends. By your power through this Sacrament, help us also to die to self that we may be taken with you into glory. You are the Lord forevermore. (Romans 6:4) C Amen The people remain standing as the Sacrament is removed to the tabernacle. THE STRIPPING OF THE ALTAR Following the procession, the people kneel or are seated. The Altar and Chancel are stripped of all their appointments to prepare for the solemnity of Good Friday. As the Altar is stripped, Psalm 22, the Psalm of the Passion, is sung. Remember Christ, in the hands of his enemies, stripped of his garments. At the conclusion of the Psalm, the choir and ministers leave the chancel. The pastors will kneel in prayer before the tabernacle and the Eucharistic Christ. Others may choose to join them and move to pews near the tabernacle. We remember our Lord s word to Peter in Gethsemane, Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? (Mark 14:37b) Those who choose to leave the church are asked to do so in silence. There is no Benediction or Dismissal because this service is not finished. It is the first portion of one liturgy spread over three days. There is a pause in the liturgy before the next portion tomorrow evening. The second portion of the Great Paschal Triduum will begin at 7:00 PM tomorrow as we gather for the Liturgy of the Passion and Death of our Lord. 18
