3 from the Deacon s corner The next Men s Cursillo will take place September 7-10, Below is a brief description from the Cursillo website of what it is and what to expect during the retreat. I made my Cursillo a year and a half ago and if you haven t done so I encourage every man to make a promise to himself and to his family to do so as soon as possible. Space is limited at OLQP so if you are interested please contact me ASAP! What is Cursillo? Cursillo is a Spanish word, which translates best as Short Course. The full title is Cursillo De Cristiandad, which means Short Course in Christianity or Christian Living. In Spanish the double LL is pronounced as a Y, so it is pronounced KUR-SEE-YO. Cursillo is not an organization, but rather a worldwide lay movement within the Catholic Church, and its mission is exactly the same as the Church's - Evangelization. To help Christianize the world by living out what is fundamental to being a Christian in our everyday lives. Cursillo begins with three days [weekend] of joyful living and sharing - a short but intense course in Christianity. Because each person's circumstances in life are different and each has a very unique relationship with God, the Cursillo weekend is truly a personal experience and as such can t be fully described. It must be lived and experienced firsthand to appreciate its richness and fullness. The Cursillo weekend is an encounter with oneself, Christ, and others. Maybe you've heard of Cursillo or know someone that has attended a Cursillo Weekend and you're wondering if you should attend. Do you feel something is missing in your life? Do you feel that God may be calling you to something different? Well... CURSILLO IS NOT an organization; it is a powerful, worldwide lay movement of the Catholic Church. CURSILLO IS NOT just a retreat. Although the first step is a 3-day weekend encounter, the real value begins after attending a weekend. CURSILLO IS an encounter with oneself, Christ, and others. CURSILLO IS a proven method for finding solutions to the issues faced in our daily lives. CURSILLO IS a proven method for growing and staying in a closer relationship with Christ for the rest of our lives. CURSILLO IS a proven method to help bring a relationship with Christ to others around us. CURSILLO IS a proven method of sharing with others about our daily struggles and triumphs in living out God's plan for our life. CURSILLO IS authentically Catholic; everything is directly based on the teaching of the Catholic Church and Scripture. CURSILLO IS open to all stable, post-adolescent Catholics who can validly receive the Sacraments. It is suggested that recent converts to Catholicism should generally wait two years to attend a weekend. Cursillo weekends begin Thursday evening at 6:30 pm and conclude Sunday evening by 3:00 pm. The weekend takes place at Our Lady Queen of Peace Retreat Center in Dancyville. (About a 45 minute drive from St. William.) A free will donation is taken up on Sunday to cover the costs of the weekend. Scholarships are available for those needing financial assistance. Cost is never to be a reason for not attending a Cursillo weekend. If you need more information then contact Deacon Jimmy ASAP! Peace, Deacon Jimmy

5 The Our Father a Meditation (Part 7) We continue our meditation and heart-felt understanding of the Lord s Prayer. The focus for August is perseverance. We must always strive to avoid sin. With so many temptations around us we need this grace to aid us in this daily battle. And Lead Us Not Into Temptation. When we say Lead us not into temptation we are asking God not to allow us to take the path that leads to sin. This petition implores the Spirit of discernment and strength; it requests the grace of vigilance and final perseverance. (CCC, no. 2863) With this petition, we entrust ourselves to the Holy Spirit to keep us alert to dangers of sin and give us the grace to resist temptation. We have an example of this in the Gospels of Matthew 4: 1-11 and Luke 4: Both tell us how Christ resisted temptation in the desert, which inspires us as to how we need to conduct ourselves in the temptations we are faced with daily. Preventing the possibility of sin is preferable to sinning and the negative impacts that results from sin. We have been taught to avoid these occasions of sin, that is, persons or situations that may lead us to sin. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us the following regarding this petition of the Lord s Prayer. Please refer to your Catechism for the actual footnotes that are utilized: 2846 This petition goes to the root of the preceding one, for our sins result from our consenting to temptation; we therefore ask our Father not to "lead" us into temptation. It is difficult to translate the Greek verb used by a single English word: the Greek means both "do not allow us to enter into temptation" and "do not let us yield to temptation." 150 "God cannot be tempted by evil and he himself tempts no one"; 151 on the contrary, he wants to set us free from evil. We ask him not to allow us to take the way that leads to sin. We are engaged in the battle "between flesh and spirit"; this petition implores the Spirit of discernment and strength The Holy Spirit makes us discern between trials, which are necessary for the growth of the inner man, 152 and temptation, which leads to sin and death. 153 We must also discern between being tempted and consenting to temptation. Finally, discernment unmasks the lie of temptation, whose object appears to be good, a "delight to the eyes" and desirable, 154 when in reality its fruit is death. God does not want to impose the good, but wants free beings.... There is a certain usefulness to temptation. No one but God knows what our soul has received from him, not even we ourselves. But temptation reveals it in order to teach us to know ourselves, and in this way we discover our evil inclinations and are obliged to give thanks for the goods that temptation has revealed to us "Lead us not into temptation" implies a decision of the heart: "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.... No one can serve two masters." 156 "If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit." 157 In this assent to the Holy Spirit the Father gives us strength. "No testing has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, so that you may be able to endure it." Such a battle and such a victory become possible only through prayer. It is by his prayer that Jesus vanquishes the tempter, both at the outset of his public mission and in the ultimate struggle of his agony. 159 In this petition to our heavenly Father, Christ unites us to his battle and his agony. He urges us to vigilance of the heart in communion with his own. Vigilance is "custody of the heart," and Jesus prayed for us to the Father: "Keep them in your name." 160 The Holy Spirit constantly seeks to awaken us to keep watch. 161 Finally, this petition takes on all its dramatic meaning in relation to the last temptation of our earthly battle; it asks for final perseverance. "Lo, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is he who is awake."

He was a Polish Conventual Franciscan friar and a martyr in the German death Camp of Auschwitz during World War II. St. Maximilian Kolbe was very active in promoting the Immaculate Virgin Mary and is known as the Apostle of Consecration to Mary. Much of his life was strongly influenced by a vision he had of the Virgin Mary when he was 12. "That night I asked the Mother of God what was to become of me. Then she came to me holding two crowns, one white, the other red. She asked me if I was willing to accept either of these crowns. The white one meant that I should persevere in purity, and the red that I should become a martyr. I said that I would accept them both." One year after his vision, Kolbe and his elder brother, Francis joined the Conventual Franciscans. In 1918, he was ordained a priest and continued his work of promoting Mary throughout Poland. Over the next several years, Kolbe took on publishing. He founded a monthly periodical titled, "Rycerz Niepokalanej" (Knight of the Immaculate). He also operated a religious publishing press and founded a new Conventual Franciscan monastery at Niepokalanow, founding monasteries in both Japan and India. On February 17, 1941, the monastery was shut down; Kolbe was arrested by the German Gestapo and taken to the Pawiak prison. Three months later, he was transferred to Auschwitz. Never abandoning his priesthood, Kolbe was the victim to severe violence and harassment. Toward the end of his second month in Auschwitz, men were chosen to face death by starvation to warn against escapes. Kolbe was not chosen but volunteered to take the place of a man with a family. It is said during the last days of his life Kolbe led prayers to Our Lady with the prisoners and remained calm. He was the last of the group to remain alive, after two weeks of dehydration and starvation. The guards gave him a lethal injection of carbolic acid. The stories tell that he raised his left arm and calmly awaited death.
