1 St. William Catholic Church 4932 Easley Street Millington, TN (901) March 2019 Ash Wednesday is March 6th and Masses are at 8:30am & 6pm in the church, and at 11:30am on the military base. The Monk s Supper will be served after the 6pm Mass in the Family Life Center. This is a tradition at St. William and consists of homemade vegetable soup and bread. It is a good way to note the beginning of Lent as a Parish family. Everyone is invited! Into the Desert A Lenten Home Study Program on Prayer Our Lord teaches that prayer is a relationship and a vital necessity. And yet, many of us have difficulty committing to daily prayer. Follow Jesus into the desert this Lent and discover intimacy with God in this 6-week video-based study with daily meditations in the participants guide. Dr. Tim Gray masterfully uses the discipline of Lectio Divina to show you how to make prayer an effective effort of love and intimacy. This series captures the secret to opening our hearts and minds to Scripture as the means to hear from God and then respond in conversation, basking in his presence and resolving to live in and through his love. Just go to FORMED.org and click on Study and go to the link Into the Desert. You can download and print the participant guide to follow for the week. If you haven t signed up for FORMED yet, just go to: stwilliamcc.formed.org and register. It s FREE! Contact: Debi Yetman if you have any questions With many blessings and prayers from our staff! 3 from the Deacon s corner LENT As we continue our journey through the Liturgical Calendar, we find ourselves at the Season of Lent. Ash Wednesday occurs on March 6, 2019 and kicks off the 40 day season. Ash Wednesday is one of the highest attended masses behind Christmas, and Easter. FYI: It s not even a Holy Day of Obligation but many people think it is. With ashes traced in the sign of the cross on our foreheads, we are reminded to "Repent, and believe in the Gospel" or "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return" Lent is the season during which we prepare ourselves for Easter. We do this by prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Below are some ideas to help you during your Lenten journey this year. According to United States Catholic Bishops, the rules for fasting and abstinence are as follows: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. (usccb.org) Attend the Friday Fish Fry s at St. William! Bring your family and friends! It s a fun Catholic tradition to help you abstain from eating meat on Fridays during Lent. Afterwards you can attend the Stations of the Cross. We will have them every Friday during Lent at 7PM at St. William. Prayer is easy, you should pray more, always, but especially during Lent. Pray the rosary more often. Say the Angelus every day at lunch time. Start a practice of daily prayer that will last after Lent. Pray as a family! Spend an hour in silence in prayerful reflection. Read scripture every day. Spend time in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. Prepare for mass by studying the readings for Mass ahead of time. Sign up for an hour of Eucharistic Adoration. Go to a weekday Mass during the week. Almsgiving is the practice of giving your time, talent, and treasure to others. There are many things you can do during Lent in regards to Almsgiving. Lent is not always about giving something up. That is just one small aspect of it, and you should practice some sort of self-denial. But it is also about giving something back and helping others. Take something up. Some things you could DO during Lent are: Think about what you usually spend your money on. Do you buy too many clothes? Spend too much on dinner out? Pick one type of expenditure that you ll fast from during Lent, and then give the money you would usually spend to a local charity. Take something on take one item per day for forty days, from your closet or book shelf or whatever and donate it to charity. Spend at least one weekend or evening volunteering during Lent. Serve a meal at your local soup kitchen. Visit the elderly. Stock shelves at a food pantry. Give up Social Media and spend that time in prayer or quiet time. When you go to work or the store, take the furthest parking spot from your destination and pray the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be while you walk. You ll get both a good physical and spiritual workout.

4 Think about a habit that has kept you from being whom God is calling you to be. Consciously give up that habit for Lent. Celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Can t remember how? There s an app for that. Tell the priest it s been a while and ask him to guide you through it. Read a spiritual book, or two, or three. I try to read one per week during Lent. Debi Yetman has many good ones to choose from in her kiosk! Lent is a time when we should let go and let God. These are just suggestions. Figure out what works for you and your family and make it a great Lent! As always you are all in my prayers. Peace, Deacon Jimmy P.S. In my last month s article, I spoke of the many things that happen on February 2nd. I failed to mention Groundhog Day. So, in case you were wondering, Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow, which means an early Spring this year! 5 The Nicene Creed, Part 5 For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. The only power that is capable of overcoming sin is the love of God. This part of the Creed reminds us that Jesus suffered and died for our sake because of God the Fathers great love for us and because Jesus was sent to do the will of the Father. Christ s suffering and death was the instrument of our salvation. Jesus told the apostles that he would have to suffer and die and that to follow him was for each of them to take up their own cross (Luke 9:23). To be willing to suffer and die for the love of God or for the love of others is the greatest expression of love (John 12:24). Not only did he die, but Jesus rose from the dead! Three days after his death, Jesus rose! By this most powerful mystery, Jesus overcomes the power of death for all of us. Death is conquered in the sense that not only do our souls survive physical death, but even our bodies will rise again at the end time at the Last Judgement and resurrection of the dead. It is by his resurrection that we are given new life a life in Christ. These events were prophesied in the Old Testament. We read these in the Book of Isaiah in the part referred to as the suffering servant. We also read about these events in the Book of Psalms as well. The Gospel accounts of the passion, death and resurrection all refer back to the Old Testament. Paul speaks of these things while evangelizing to the Gentiles. We also read in the New Testament that the followers of Jesus were not afraid to die or be martyred for this belief. Forty days after his resurrection, Jesus ascended into Heaven. This was witness by the Apostles. Acts 1:9 tells us Jesus was lifted up and a cloud took him from their sight. His ascension marks the definitive entrance of Jesus humanity into God s heavenly home, where he will come from again. The Catechism tells us in paragraph : Jesus Christ, the head of the Church, precedes us into the Father s glorious kingdom so that we the members of his Body, may live in hope of one day being with him forever. Jesus Christ, having entered the sanctuary of heaven once and for all intercedes constantly for us as the mediator who assures us of the permanent outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The Book of Revelation tells us about the Second Coming of Jesus. This is Christ s return in glory at the end of time. It is at the end time, at our bodily resurrection, that we will receive our final judgment. He refers to this in the Gospel of Matthew 25: This is what we are preparing ourselves for to meet Jesus and to be found that we loved God and our neighbor. In living as Jesus taught us, our joy and hope are in spending eternity with him in Heaven, which has no end. From the Catechism: 680 Christ the Lord already reigns through the Church, but all the things of this world are not yet subjected to him. The triumph of Christ s kingdom will not come about without one last assault by the powers of evil. 681 On Judgment Day at the end of the world, Christ will come in glory to achieve the definitive triumph of good over evil which, like the wheat and the tares, have grown up together in the course of history. 682 When he comes at the end of time to judge the living and the dead, the glorious Christ will reveal the secret disposition of hearts and will render to each man according to his works and according to his acceptance Next month, we will look the next statement on our belief in the Holy Spirit.
