2 Welcome to St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral Whether you are a returning Greek Orthodox to our legendary St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, a newcomer to Philadelphia or the Greater Delaware Valley, or someone with an emerging interest in the Orthodox Faith, I, the Parish Council and all the parishioners and families of St. George Cathedral welcome you to our home where we have been serving for close to 100 years. Since the days of the first D. Liturgy back in 1911 in the original church and continuing through the current St. George Cathedral, the people of Orthodox faith have gathered together for prayer, faith foundation, worship, service to the poor and fellowship. As a parish community, some of our proudest moments come through the children served through our Religious Education and Greek School programs creating the next generation of Orthodox to serve here locally and to share the message of Christ throughout the world. Our schools commit to teach as Jesus did; instilling a love of our Orthodox faith and love of neighbor. St. George Cathedral Religious and Greek Schools create a caring, respectful environment which promote the learning of language, history and tradition and religion, and develop faithful Christians and responsible citizens. The schools strive to reach each child through an engaging environment filled with hands on teaching and a true compassion for sacred life. Instilling a love for God, the teachings of Jesus and a true passion for learning are the most important lessons we can share with our children. 6 THE EPISTLE READING The reading is from St. Paul s Second Letter to Timothy 2: 1-10 Timothy, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier on service gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to satisfy the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is the hardworking farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. Think over what I say, for the Lord will grant you understanding in everything. Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descended from David, as preached in my gospel, the gospel for which I am suffering and wearing fetters like a criminal. But the word of God is not fettered. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain salvation in Christ Jesus with its eternal glory.

7 Ο ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟΣ Πρὸς Τιμόθεον δευτέρας Ἐπιστολῆς τὸ ἀνάγνωσμα 2: 1-10 Τέκνον Τιμόθεε, ἐνδυναμοῦ ἐν τῇ χάριτι τῇ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ. Καὶ ἃ ἤκουσας παρʼ ἐμοῦ διὰ πολλῶν μαρτύρων, ταῦτα παράθου πιστοῖς ἀνθρώποις, οἵτινες ἱκανοὶ ἔσονται καὶ ἑτέρους διδάξαι. Σὺ οὖν κακοπάθησον ὡς καλὸς στρατιώτης Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ. Οὐδεὶς στρατευόμενος ἐμπλέκεται ταῖς τοῦ βίου πραγματείαις, ἵνα τῷ στρατολογήσαντι ἀρέσῃ. Ἐὰν δὲ καὶ ἀθλῇ τις, οὐ στεφανοῦται ἐὰν μὴ νομίμως ἀθλήσῃ. Τὸν κοπιῶντα γεωργὸν δεῖ πρῶτον τῶν καρπῶν μεταλαμβάνειν. Νόει ἃ λέγω δῴη γάρ σοι ὁ κύριος σύνεσιν ἐν πᾶσιν. 8 THE GOSPEL READING The Gospel reading is according to Matthew: 15: At that time, Jesus went to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely possessed by a demon." But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, "Send her away, for she is crying after us." He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." And he answered, "It is not fair to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table." Then Jesus answered her, "O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire." And her daughter was healed instantly.

9 ΤΟ ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟΝ Ἐκ τοῦ κατὰ Ματθαῖον ἁγίου Εὐαγγελίου τὸ ἀνάγνωσμα 15: Τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ, ἐξελθὼν ἐκεῖθεν ὁ Ιησοῦς ἀνεχώρησεν εἰς τὰ μέρη Τύρου καὶ Σιδῶνος. καὶ ἰδοὺ γυνὴ Χαναναία ἀπὸ τῶν ὁρίων ἐκείνων ἐξελθοῦσα ἐκραύγαζεν αὐτῷ λέγουσα ἐλέησόν με, Κύριε, υἱὲ Δαυΐδ ἡ θυγάτηρ μου κακῶς δαιμονίζεται. ὁ δὲ οὐκ ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῇ λόγον. καὶ προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἠρώτων αὐτὸν λέγοντες ἀπόλυσον αὐτήν, ὅτι κράζει ὄπισθεν ἡμῶν. ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν οὐκ ἀπεστάλην εἰ μὴ εἰς τὰ πρόβατα τὰ ἀπολωλότα οἴκου Ισραήλ. ἡ δὲ ἐλθοῦσα προσεκύνησεν αὐτῷ λέγουσα Κύριε, βοήθει μοι. ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν οὐκ ἔστι καλὸν λαβεῖν τὸν ἄρτον τῶν τέκνων καὶ βαλεῖν τοῖς κυναρίοις. ἡ δὲ εἶπε ναί, Κύριε καὶ γὰρ τὰ κυνάρια ἐσθίει ἀπὸ τῶν ψυχίων τῶν πιπτόντων ἀπὸ τῆς τραπέζης τῶν κυρίων αὐτῶν. τότε ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ιησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῇ ὦ γύναι, μεγάλη σου ἡ πίστις! γενηθήτω σοι ὡς θέλεις. καὶ ἰάθη ἡ θυγάτηρ αὐτῆς ἀπὸ τῆς ὥρας ἐκείνης.

10 STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM NEWS As Christian Stewards we are called to give back to God from the first fruits of our labor. We support our parish and her ministries in an intentional way and not with only what is left after everything else has been taken care of. 11 PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS The Ladies Philoptochos Society will be baking on Wednesday, February The ladies will be at the Philoptochos Room from 10am to 2pm and anyone who would like to volunteer is welcome to come. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (Με απόφαση της Φιλοπτώχου Αδελφότητος Κυριών του Ιερού Καθεδρικού Ναού Αγίου Γεωργίου Φιλαδελφείας, τα μέλη αυτής θα συναντηθούν εφεξής Τετάρτη, Φεβ. 13, 2019, και περί ώρα 10 η π.μ. έως 2ας μ.μ., για την προετοιμασία των ετησίων ζαχαροπλαστικών παρασκευασμάτων. Our Philoptochos Society has been able to secure a speaker on the subject of the Opioid Crisis in Philadelphia. The date is Sunday, March 3, 2019, in the church hall at 12:30 P.M. The speaker will present us with how the city is handling the crisis and what help is available to all of us. Please attend and pass this information on to anyone you know. 12 Our Annual Philoptochos Bid n Buy is on Saturday, May 4,2019 It is a wonderful and fun event sponsored by our Ladies Philoptochos Society Ai Mirophoroi. All proceeds directly benefit our church's Philoptochos. Together with the National Philoptochos, our mission is to promote charitable and philanthropic outreach, and to perpetuate and promote our Orthodox faith and traditions. Those who attend the Annual Bid n Buy look forward to bidding on fabulous gifts that we offer. In order to organize the most successful event, we ask for your help. We need to work together and donate what we can to have many beautiful gifts on display that people will want to win. Items that we still need donated are new: housewares, jewelry, sheet sets, kitchenware, cash donations, & gift cards. The theme this year is ALOHA!
