Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church Passion/Palm Sunday April 14, :00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Introduction to the Day The voice of the suffering savior, Jesus, can be heard in the prophet Isaiah s words and the pleading of the psalm. We are invited into the agony of our Lord in the extended reading of the story of Jesus passion. In the second reading, we who have put on Christ in holy baptism are urged to let the mind of Christ be our own. Lent leads us to this holy moment. Embrace it.

Welcome to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church! If you are a visitor, please know that the restrooms are out the door in the back of the right side of the worship space, up the ramp to the left, across that room, and down the hall to the offices on the right side before you get to the offices. If you need the nursery, go out the door in the back of the right side of the worship space, down the steps to the right, and through the door at the bottom of the steps to your right. It has a sign on it. There is a changing table and a rocker available there. The nursery is not staffed. Communion Statement The belief of this congregation is that participation in the Lord s Supper is the reception of the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ himself for us to eat and drink (Luther s Small Catechism, ELW p. 1166). We believe that a person who has faith in these words, given for you and shed for you for the forgiveness of sin, is really worthy and well prepared. However, a person who does not believe these words or doubts them is unworthy and unprepared, because the words for you require truly believing hearts (Luther s Small Catechism, ELW p. 1166). Prayers for before worship and before receiving communion can be found on page 72 in the front of Evangelical Lutheran Worship. At this service, communion is distributed continuously. When you come forward, you will be given a piece of bread to eat. If you need gluten-free bread, just ask. Then you move to the next person and you be given a small cup filled with wine to drink. If you need grape juice, just ask. Then you move to the next person and put the empty small cup in the tray. Prayers for after receiving communion and after worship can be found on pages 72 and 73 in the front of Evangelical Lutheran Worship. May the Spirit bless our time of worship. 2

GATHERING PRELUDE: Ride On, O King, Ride On! Martin ACCLAMATION Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. PROCESSIONAL GOSPEL: Luke 19:28-40 The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. 28 After he had said this, [Jesus] went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, Why are you untying it? just say this, The Lord needs it. 32 So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, Why are you untying the colt? 34 They said, The Lord needs it. 35 Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. 37 As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, 38 saying, Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven! 39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, Teacher, order your disciples to stop. 40 He answered, I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. 3

Let us go forth in peace, in the name of Christ. Amen. PROCESSION Prepare the Royal Highway (ELW 264) 1 Prepare the royal highway; the King of kings is near! Let ev'ry hill and valley a level road appear! Then greet the King of glory, foretold in sacred story: Refrain Hosanna to the Lord, for he fulfills God's word! 2 God's people, see him coming: your own eternal king! Palm branches strew before him! Spread garments! Shout and sing! God's promise will not fail you! No more shall doubt assail you! Refrain 3 Then fling the gates wide open to greet your promised king! Your king, yet ev'ry nation its tribute too may bring. All lands will bow before him; their voices join your singing: Refrain 4 His is no earthly kingdom; it comes from heav'n above. His rule is peace and freedom and justice, truth, and love. So let your praise be sounding for kindness so abounding: Refrain 4

The Lord be with you. And also with you. BLESSING OF PALMS Let us pray. We praise you, O God, for redeeming the world through our Savior Jesus Christ. Today he entered the holy city in triumph and was proclaimed messiah and king by those who spread garments and branches along his way. Bless these branches and those who carry them. Grant us grace to follow our Lord in the way of the cross, so that, joined to his death and resurrection, we enter into life with you; through the same Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Please be seated. CHOIR ANTHEM: All Glory, Laud and Honor arr. Caleb French CHILDREN'S MESSAGE (10:30) CHERUB CHOIR: Hosanna! Hosanna! Arr. Joanne Burns Hambleton PRAYER OF THE DAY As we now enter into the contemplation of the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ and meditate on the salvation of the world through his sufferings, death, burial, and resurrection, let us pray. Everlasting God, in your endless love for the human race you sent our Lord Jesus Christ to take on our nature and to suffer death on the cross. In your mercy enable us to share in his obedience to your will and in the glorious victory of his resurrection, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. WORD 5

FIRST READING: Isaiah 50:4-9a This text, the third of the four Servant Songs in Isaiah, speaks of the servant s obedience in the midst of persecution. Though the servant has been variously understood as the prophet himself or a remnant of faithful Israel, Christians have often recognized the figure of Christ in these poems. A reading from Isaiah. 4 The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. 5 The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. 6 I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. 7 The Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; 8 he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. 9a It is the Lord GOD who helps me; who will declare me guilty? Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. 6

PSALM 31: Have mercy on me, O LORD, for I am in trouble; my eye is consumed with sorrow, and also my throat and my belly. 10 For my life is wasted with grief, and my years with sighing; my strength fails me because of affliction, and my bones are consumed. 11 I am the scorn of all my enemies, a disgrace to my neighbors, a dismay to my acquaintances; when they see me in the street they avoid me. 12 Like the dead I am forgotten, out of mind; I am as useless as a broken pot. R 13 For I have heard the whispering of the crowd; fear is all around; they put their heads together against me; they plot to take my life. 14 But as for me, I have trusted in you, O LORD. I have said, You are my God. 15 My times are in your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me. 16 Let your face shine up- on your servant; save me in your steadfast love. R 7

SECOND READING: Philippians 2:5-11 Paul quotes from an early Christian hymn that describes Jesus humble obedience in his incarnation as a human being, even to death, and his exaltation and glory as Lord of all. A reading from Philippians. 5 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, 8 he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Please stand for the gospel. 8

GOSPEL ACCLAIMATION: Jesus, I Will Ponder Now (ELW 345) 1 Jesus, I will ponder now on your holy passion; let your Spirit now endow me for meditation. Grant that I in love and faith may the image cherish of your suff'ring, pain, and death, that I may not perish. 2 Make me see your great distress, anguish, and affliction, bonds and blows and wretchedness and your crucifixion; make me see how scourge and rod, spear and nails, did wound you, how you died for those, O God, who with thorns had crowned you. 3 Yet, O Lord, not thus alone make me see your passion, but its cause to me make known and its termination. For I also and my sin wrought your deep affliction; this the shameful cause has been of your crucifixion. 4 Let me view your pain and loss with repentant grieving, nor prepare again your cross by unholy living. May I give you love for love! Hear me, O my Savior, that I may in heav'n above sing your praise forever. 9

Please be seated. THE PASSION OF OUR LORD ACCORDING TO LUKE The congregation will read the part of the People. Jesus: When I sent you out without a purse, bag, or sandals, did you lack anything? Narrator: They said, People: No, not a thing. (Dialogue continues Jesus speaks) Jesus: For I tell you, this scripture must be fulfilled in me, And he was counted among the lawless ; and indeed what is written about me is being fulfilled. Narrator: They said, People: Lord, look, here are two swords. (Dialogue continues Jesus speaks) Narrator: When those who were around him saw what was coming, they asked, People: Lord, should we strike with the sword? (Dialogue continues Peter speaks) Narrator: Now the men who were holding Jesus began to mock him and beat him; they also blindfolded him and kept asking him, People: Prophesy! Who is it that struck you? 10

Narrator: When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, gathered together, and they brought him to their council. They said, People: If you are the Messiah, tell us. (Dialogue continues Jesus speaks) Jesus: But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God. Narrator: All of them asked, People: Are you, then, the Son of God? Narrator: He said to them, Jesus: You say that I am. Narrator: Then they said, People: What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips! Narrator: Then the assembly rose as a body and brought Jesus before Pilate. They began to accuse him saying, People: We found this man perverting our nation, forbidding us to pay taxes to the emperor, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king. (Dialogue continues Pilate speaks) Pilate: I find no basis for an accusation against this man. 11

Narrator: But they were insistent and said, People: He stirs up the people by teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee, where he began even to this place. (Dialogue continues Pilate speaks) Pilate: Indeed, he has done nothing to deserve death. I will therefore have him flogged and release him. Narrator: Then they all shouted out together. People: Away with this fellow! Release Barabbas for us! Narrator: Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again; but they kept shouting, People: Crucify, crucify him! (Dialogue continues Jesus speaks) Narrator: And they cast lots to divide his clothing. And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, People: He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one! Please stand. 12

HYMN OF THE DAY: O Sacred Head, Now Wounded (ELW 351) 1 O sacred head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down, now scornfully surrounded with thorns, thine only crown; O sacred head, what glory, what bliss till now was thine! Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call thee mine. 2 How pale thou art with anguish, with sore abuse and scorn; how does thy face now languish, which once was bright as morn! Thy grief and bitter passion were all for sinners' gain; mine, mine was the transgression, but thine the deadly pain. 3 What language shall I borrow to thank thee, dearest friend, for this thy dying sorrow, thy pity without end? Oh, make me thine forever, and should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to thee. 3 Lord, be my consolation; shield me when I must die; remind me of thy passion when my last hour draws nigh. These eyes, new faith receiving, from thee shall never move; for all who die believing die safely in thy love. 13

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Each petition ends: Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. The prayer concludes: Attend to the needs of the whole world with your saving grace, and lead us all into new life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The people may greet one another with a sign of Christ s peace, and may say, Peace be with you, or similar words. Please be seated. MEAL OFFERTORY: Hear, O Israel Weinberger Please stand as the offering is brought forward. OFFERING HYMN: Eternal Lord of Love, Behold Your Church (ELW 321) 1 Eternal Lord of love, behold your church walking once more the pilgrim way of Lent, led by your cloud by day, by night your fire, moved by your love and toward your presence bent: far off yet here--the goal of all desire. 2 So daily dying to the way of self, so daily living to your way of love, we walk the road, Lord Jesus, that you trod, knowing ourselves baptized into your death: so we are dead and live with you in God. 14

3 If dead in you, so in you we arise, you the firstborn of all the faithful dead; and as through stony ground the green shoots break, glorious in springtime dress of leaf and flow'r, so into life and glory shall we wake. OFFERING PRAYER Let us pray. Generous God, you feed us with the harvest of the land, and you provide for our every need. Receive our gifts of money, imagination, and labor, and transform them into a feast that welcomes all, in Jesus Christ, our host and our guest. Amen. GREAT THANKSGIVING DIALOGUE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE Blessed are you, O God of the universe With this bread and cup we remember our Lord s passover from death to life as we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. O God of resurrection and new life: Grace our table with your presence. Come, Holy Spirit. Reveal yourself to us in the breaking of the bread Send us forth, burning with justice, peace, and love. Come, Holy Spirit. 15

With your holy ones of all times and places...we praise you, O God, blessed and holy Trinity, now and forever. Amen. LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Please be seated. COMMUNION DISTRIBUTION COMMUNION SONG 16

DISTRIBUTION HYMN: Beneath the Cross of Jesus (ELW 338) 1 Beneath the cross of Jesus I long to take my stand; the shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land, a home within a wilderness, a rest upon the way, from the burning of the noontide heat and burdens of the day. 2 Upon the cross of Jesus, my eye at times can see the very dying form of one who suffered there for me. And from my contrite heart, with tears, two wonders I confess: the wonder of his glorious love and my unworthiness. 3 I take, O cross, your shadow for my abiding place; I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of his face; content to let the world go by, to know no gain nor loss, my sinful self my only shame, my glory all, the cross. Please stand. 17

SONG AFTER COMMUNION: Now Lord PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Let us pray. Tender and merciful one, at your feast, you fed us who brought nothing, turning our emptiness into joy. Filled with your abundant grace, send us now to be ministers of reconciliation, mending broken hearts, working for justice, and striving for peace among all people, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Please stand. SENDING BLESSING God, who fills the creation with abundance, Christ, who spreads his arms in forgiveness, Holy Spirit, who draws ever near to us, bless you and bring you to life everlasting. Amen. 18

SENDING SONG: (VS. 1-3) Go to Dark Gethsemane (ELW 347) 1 Go to dark Gethsemane, all who feel the tempter's pow'r; your Redeemer's conflict see. Watch with him one bitter hour; turn not from his griefs away; learn from Jesus Christ to pray. 2 Follow to the judgment hall, view the Lord of life arraigned; oh, the wormwood and the gall! Oh, the pangs his soul sustained! Shun not suff'ring, shame, or loss; learn from him to bear the cross. 3 Calv'ry's mournful mountain climb; there, adoring at his feet, mark that miracle of time, God's own sacrifice complete. "It is finished!" hear him cry; learn from Jesus Christ to die. DISMISSAL Go in peace. Remember the poor. Thanks be to God.
