1 SUNDAY MARCH ARCH 31, rd Sunday of Great Lent Veneration of the Holy Cross Commemorating St Cyril the Archbishop of Jerusalem, Repose of St Nikolai of Zhicha, Martyrs Trophimus and Eucarpus of Nicomedia, Venerable Aninias of the Euphrates, St Cyril of Astrakhan Welcome Visitors! Dobro nam Došli! MAY YOU BE BLESSED WITH AN EVER DEEPENING AWARENESS OF THE LOVE OF THE CRUCIFIED AND RISEN LORD, JESUS CHRIST! ST. NICHOLAS SERBIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH FR. CHRISTOPHER ROCKNAGE, RECTOR 601 S. Harrisburg Street, Steelton, PA chris.rocknage@gmail.com 9 am Matins ~ 10 am Divine Liturgy

2 . NICHOLAS SERBIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH ST. N Special Hymns RESURRECTION TROPARION TONE 3 Let the heavens rejoice! Let the earth be glad! For the Lord has shown strength with His arm. He has trampled down death by death. He has become the first born of the dead. He has delivered us from the depths of hell, and has granted to the world great mercy. TROPARION TO THE LIFE-GIVING CROSS TONE 1 O Lord, save Your people, and bless Your inheritance! Grant victories to the Orthodox Christians over their adversaries; and by virtue of Your Cross, preserve Your habitation! KONTAKION TO THE LIFE-GIVING CROSS TONE 7 Now the flaming sword no longer guards the gates of Eden; it has been mysteriously quenched by the wood of the Cross. The sting of death and the victory of hell have been vanquished; for You, O my Savior, have come and cried to those in hell: Enter again into Paradise! KONTAKION OF THE FIVE SUNDAYS OF GREAT LENT TONE 8 To thee, the Champion Leader, do I offer thanks of victory, O Theotokos, thou who hast delivered me from terror; but as thou that hast that power invincible, O Theotokos, thou alone can set me free: from all forms of danger free me and deliver me, that I may cry unto thee: Rejoice, O Bride without Bridegroom! INSTEAD OF HOLY GOD is a parish of the Eastern Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church under the Omophorion of His Grace, Bishop IRINEJ, pastored by Father Christopher Rocknage. OUR VISION: To be a strong and vibrant community, enabling parishioners to live the fullness of the Orthodox Faith in our Lord, Jesus Christ, "as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God." (I Cor. 4:1) OUR MISSION: To teach, assist, and provide the environment for stewards to live the message of our Lord Jesus Christ in their daily lives through worship, witness, outreach, stewardship, service, education and fellowship. Before Your Cross, we bow down in worship, O Master, and Your holy Resurrection, we glorify. HYMN TO THE THEOTOKOS (Instead of It is Truly Meet ) All of creation rejoices in you, O Full of Grace: the assembly of Angels and the race of men. O sanctified temple and spiritual paradise, the glory of virgins, from whom God was incarnate and became a Child our God before the ages. He made your body into a throne, and your womb He made more spacious than the heavens. All of creation rejoices in you, O Full of Grace. Glory to you! He said to Him, Yes, Lord; You know that I love You. He said to him, Feed My lambs. He said to him again a second time, Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me? He said to Him, Yes, Lord; You know that I love You. He said to him, Tend My sheep. He said to him the third time, Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me? Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, Do you love Me? And he said to Him, Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You. Jesus said to him, Feed My sheep. Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish. This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, Follow Me. Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, Lord, who is the one who betrays You? Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, But Lord, what about this man? Jesus said to him, If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me. Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true. And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.

4 EPISTLE: Hebrews 4:14-5:6 DEACON: PRIEST: READER: DEACON: READER: CHOIR: READER: CHOIR: Let us pay attention. Peace be unto all! And with your spirit! Wisdom. The Prokeimenon in the Sixth Tone: O Lord, save Your people and bless Your inheritance! O Lord, save Your people and bless Your inheritance! v: To You, O Lord, will I call. O my God, be not silent to me! O Lord, save Your people and bless Your inheritance! READER: O Lord, save Your people... CHOIR: DEACON: READER: DEACON: and bless Your inheritance! Wisdom! The Reading is from the Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Hebrews Let us attend! READER: Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness. Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for himself, to offer sacrifices for sins. And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. As He also says in another place: You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek PRIEST: READER: CHOIR: READER: CHOIR: READER: CHOIR: Peace be unto you, reader! And with your spirit! Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Remember Your congregation, which You have purchased of old! Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! God is our King before the ages; He has worked salvation in the midst of the earth! Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

6 LITURGY GOSPEL: Mark 8:34-9:1 When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel s will save it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels. And He said to them, Assuredly, I say to you that there are some standing here who will not taste death till they see the kingdom of God present with power. Synaxarion Synaxarion Reading for the Third Sunday of Lent On this day, the Third Sunday of the Fast, we keep the feast of the Veneration of the honorable and life-creating Cross. Verses Let the whole world entire worship the Cross through Which it truly knew to worship Thee, O Word. Every hard and strenuous work is accomplished with great difficulty, which appears especially in the middle of such work; for the effort in this performance brings with it fatigue which makes the accomplishment of the rest difficult. Having arrived with God s grace at the middle of the Fast, our compassionate Mother the Holy Orthodox Church thought fit to reveal to us the Holy Cross as the joy of the world and power of the faithful to help us carry on the struggles of the divine Fast. By its power, O Christ God, preserve us from the crafty designs of the evil one and account us worthy to worship Thy divine Passion and life-giving Resurrection, as we achieve the course of the Forty Days with ease, and have mercy on us, as Thou alone art good and the Lover of mankind. Amen.

14 Stewardship Reflection Today is the third Sunday of Great Lent and the Orthodox Church commemorates the Precious and Life-Giving Cross of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The Divine Liturgy includes a special veneration of the Cross, which prepares the faithful for the commemoration of the Crucifixion during Holy Week. Let's reflect for a moment on the Crucifixion and its meaning. Jesus Christ died for our sins which was done because "God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" John 3:16. God's love for us - our opportunity for eternal life - our Salvation and the hope of living in God's kingdom are all because Jesus died on the Cross. As we venerate the Cross this Sunday, let us especially think about the meaning of the Cross and ask...how much do we love God?...how much do we love our Church which represents Christ?...how much do we love God for all that he provides for us? Do we love him enough to sacrifice of our Time, Talents and Treasures? Kontakion from the third Sunday of Great Lent No longer does the flaming sword guard the gate of Eden, for a marvelous quenching is come upon it, even the Tree of the Cross. The sting has been taken from death, and the victory from Hades. And, You, my Savior, has appeared unto those in Hades saying: Enter again into Paradise.
