1 God s Kingdom Is Forever

2 From the Director of Worship and Music Prelude: Intrada on O God, Our Help in Ages Past and Built on the Rock the Church Doth Stand Greetings! Thank you for joining us as we gather to lift our voices in praise and celebration of God s Forever Kingdom and the work of the Protestant Reformation. This worship service is the culmination of many hours of work and preparation by the lay members, choral scholars and music ministry interns of Westminster Presbyterian Church, First Presbyterian Church of Oklahoma City, and Central Presbyterian Church. Special thanks are due to the collaborative spirits of First Presbyterian Church Director of Music, Warren Puffer Jones, and Central Presbyterian Church Organist and Choir Director, Jan McDaniel. In addition to a program of glorious anthems and hymn settings by our clinician and conductor,, we are thrilled to be presenting to you the world premier of Cornerstone, which was commissioned of Dr. Z. Randall Stroope for this occasion by the Mary Margaret Heath Choral Music Endowment. The Marge Duncan Memorial Concert Series of Westminster Presbyterian Church is pleased to underwrite this event and dedicate it to the glory of God in honor and memory of Mrs. Duncan. You are cordially invited to join us for Christmas at Westminster on Wednesday, December 6 at 7:00pm. *Hymn: Thanks Be to God for His Saints of Each Past Generation LOBE DEN HERREN Text by Timothy Dudley-Smith *Copyright 1997 Hope Publishing Company. All rights reserved.* All: 1. Thanks be to God for his saints of each past generation, one with us still in one body, one great congregation; with them proclaim Jesus for ever the same, Author of life and salvation. Men: 2. Thanks be to God for his blessings which daily surround us; glory to Christ and Redeemer who sought us and found us. who from the grave rose the almighty to save, breaking the fetters that bound us. Women: 3. Thanks be to God for the years that are yet in his keeping, trusting each day to the care of a Father un-sleeping, on to the end, Christ our companion and friend, joy at the last for our weeping. All: 4. Thanks be to God who has called us and daily defends us, who with the Son and the Spirit unchanging befriends us; now in that Name, Jesus for ever the same, forth to his service he sends us. Thank you again for joining us for this very special day in the life of the church. Listen, Enjoy, and SING! Soli Deo Gloria! Yours in Christ s Service, Josh Phelps, Director of Worship and Music Westminster Presbyterian Church -Please remember to silence cell phones- Meet *Opening sentences: Psalm 22:3-5 Leader: You are enthroned as the Holy One; People: you are the praise of Israel. Leader: In you our forebears put their trust; People: they trusted and you delivered them. Leader: They cried to you and were saved; People: in you they trusted and were not disappointed. *Invocation has emerged as one of America s foremost composers of music for the church during the past two decades. His hymns are found in eight hymnals including A New Hymnal for Colleges and Schools (Yale University Press), Voices United (The United Church of Canada), and With One Voice (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America). His 300 published compositions include anthems, hymns, works for solo voice, organ, brass, and major works including a Christmas cantata and a Te Deum. In 1995 he was commissioned jointly by the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, Inc. and Choristers Guild to compose a hymn setting for their convocation in San Diego. Scott received two degrees in choral music from The University of Alabama School of Music under the tutelage of Frederick Prentice. In addition to Prentice, he also studied composition with Paul Hedwall and Gail Kubik. Scott has served as adjunct faculty for The University of Alabama School of Music, The University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Music, and Samford University School of Music. He has traveled extensively as guest conductor and clinician throughout the United States, as well as to Canada and Africa. Words of Welcome Mr. Josh Phelps A Reading from God s Word: Hebrews 12:1-3 Rev. Jennifer Kirbas Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sins that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth is moved, and the mountains fall into the sea, though its waters roar and foam, and the mountains shake at its swelling. There is a river whose streams make glad the City of God, the holy place of the dwellings of the Most High. God dwells within her, and she shall not be moved. God will help her as morning dawns. *Congregation stands when indicated.* The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. *Hymn: #275 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Stanza 2: All, Parts Stanza 3: All, Parts Stanza 4: All, Unison EIN FESTE BURG *We Praise Thee, O God. The glorious company of the apostles praise Thee. The goodly fellowship of the prophets praise Thee. The noble army of martyrs praise Thee. The holy church throughout all the world doth acknowledge Thee; the Father of an infinite majesty; Thine adorable true and only Son; also the Holy Ghost, the Comforter. Thou art the King of Glory, O Christ, Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father. When Thou tookest upon Thee to deliver us, Thou didst humble Thyself to be born of a virgin. When Thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, Thou didst open the kingdom of heaven to all believers. Thou sittest at the right hand of God in the glory of the Father. We believe that Thou shalt come to be our judge. We therefore pray Thee, help Thy servants, whom Thou hadst redeemed with Thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with Thy saints in glory everlasting. Leader: O Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine heritage. People: Govern them and lift them up forever. 5 Marjoriee Marge Lee George Duncan. Marjoriee Marge Lee George Duncan was born in McAlester, Oklahoma. She was a devoted wife, mother, Oma to her grand and great grandchildren, and involved community member. Marge had a delightful sense of humor, loved to entertain, and was a gracious hostess. She was actively engaged in Westminster Presbyterian Church. In addition to being the wife to Robert Charles Duncan for 63 years, Marge studied Art History and Psychology at the University of Phoenix while raising her three children and a wide assortment of pets. During their sixty-three years of marriage, Marge and Bob resided in McAlester, OK; Los Angeles, CA; Tucson, AZ; Phoenix, AZ; Roswell, NM; and Oklahoma City, OK. Once settled in Oklahoma City in July, 1968, they began a second family by raising Schnauzers. Marge actively participated in the OKC arts community and established the Duncan Studio. Her paintings were exhibited in shows, galleries, and private collections. She continued to study painting with artists Carol Anderson, Scott Burdick and several others. Bob and Marge were members of the Cowboy Hall of Fame and were involved in the Prix de West as well as other activities. They were also avid members of the Buckle Club at the Rendezvous of Art in Helena, Montana. This venue gave them the opportunity to mingle with some of the artists they enjoyed knowing personally and pursue their passion for Western art. As a couple, Marge and Bob embraced opportunities to engage in philanthropic activities in Oklahoma City and were enthusiastic supporters of the arts. For forty years, she contributed in many ways by fund-raising, holding positions of leadership, serving as a board member, volunteering unlimited hours, providing donations of material and monetary gifts, and was a partner in the origination of several programs to encourage the development of young artists. Principal organizations with which she was affiliated are Oklahoma City Orchestra League, Oklahoma Philharmonic, Canterbury Choral Society, Lyric Theatre, Oklahoma Museum of Art, PEO, Garden Club, and the Oklahoma City Zoo. Marge was instrumental in creating the Christmas Concert, Reindeer Express, benefitting the Urban Food Bank, We Got Rhythm, and the Competition of Young Performing Artists. She was intimately involved with the Symphony Show House for many years serving as Chairman and headed various committees including Decoration, Tea Room, Boutique, Decorator Sales and History of Owners. As a docent for the zoo, she won the Golden Marmoset Award for volunteerism. Her favorite activity was traveling among OKC elementary schools introducing a snake and hawk to the students. Bob and Marge traveled the world together and with their family. Some of her favorite locations were Africa, the Holy Land, and their Around-the-World Trip, specifically Italy and Greece. She participated in a variety of programs sponsored by World Neighbors as well as traveling to Africa to volunteer in a community project. Family trips across the globe during the past forty years were special to Marge. Most memorable was the trip to Kenya in 2007 to celebrate the New Year. At the age of 12, each of their four grandchildren traveled with Bob and Marge to a location of his/her choice. These trips created profound impressions and long-lasting memories for everyone. Marge was a musician and member of church and community choirs. She loved to play the organ and piano. In honor of her love of music, the family has established The Marge Duncan Concert Fund at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Annual concerts for the next ten years featuring a full orchestra will perform free concerts for the community. Community members wishing to honor Marge s memory and interested in making contributions, are encouraged to make a donation to this fund: The Westminster Presbyterian Church Marge Duncan Memorial Concert Series.
