The Prokeimenon in the Eighth Tone: Pray and make your vows before the Lord our God. Wisdom! The reading is from the second Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Corinthians. Let us be attentive! B rethren, what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: I will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they shall be My people. Therefore: Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean and I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty. Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. Celebrant: The reading is from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew. People: Glory to Thee, O Lord, glory to Thee! A t that time, Jesus departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon possessed. But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, Send her away, for she cries out after us. But He answered and said, I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, Lord help me! But He answered and said, It is not good to take the children s bread and throw it to the little dogs. And she said, Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters table. Then Jesus answered and said to her, O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire. And her daughter was healed from that very hour. People: Glory to Thee, O Lord, glory to Thee!

WALKATHON IN ARCADIA TO HELP THOSE IN NEED Join International Orthodox Christian Charities in their annual SoCal StepUp! 5K walkathon in support of its humanitarian work around the world. On Saturday, October 25, 2014, in Arcadia Park, 405 South Santa Anita Avenue, the walk begins at 10:30 a.m., and lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. Registration is $30 from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. in Arcadia Park, or you can register online for $25 (iocc.org/stepup); lunch and a commemorative t shirt are included in the registration fee and children under 8 are free. For more information, contact: LosAngelesMet@iocc.org THE HOLY PROPHET JONAH Jonah lived more than eight hundred years before Christ. It is said that he was that son of the widow of Zarephath in Sidon whom the Prophet Elias had raised from the dead. By his three day sojourn in the belly of the whale, he prefigured the three days that Christ lay in the tomb; and, by his deliverance from the belly of the whale, he prefigured the Lord s Resurrection from the dead. Everything else concerning this wonderful prophet can be read in the Old Testament Book of Jonah. DISCOVERING OUR TALENTS, BY FR. He expects us to use them for His glory and for the betterment of each other...god has given each one of us some unique talent or capacity which no one else in this world possesses...this gives every man, woman, and child the value of uniqueness. 8 ON THE ORTHODOX FAITH...About the Interior of the Church? Did You Know?... The visitor to an Orthodox Church is usually impressed by the unique features and the external differences between this place of worship and those of the various traditions of Western Christianity. The rich color, distinctive iconography and beauty of the interior of an Orthodox Church generally are in sharp contrast to the simplicity which one finds in many Roman Catholic and Protestant churches. When one enters the interior of the Orthodox church it is like stepping into a whole new world of color and light. The art and design of the church not only create a distinctive atmosphere of worship, but they also reflect and embody many of the fundamental insights of Orthodoxy. BEAUTY AND SYMBOLS The Orthodox Church believes that God is the Creator of heaven and earth. The Creator is present through His creative energies of His handiwork. This means that the material world, being valuable and good, is an important means through which God expresses Himself. The Orthodox Church affirms this conviction through her extensive use of material creation not only for the embellishment of her places of worship, but also in her sacramental mysteries and services. For example, when the bread and wine "the first fruits of creation" are offered in the Eucharist, they are also a symbolic offering of all creation to God its Creator. Since there is no hesitation in using the gifts of creation, the interior of an Orthodox church is frequently very beautiful. Designed to create an atmosphere which is special, the building is filled with a feeling of joy and an appreciation of God's bounty. Orthodoxy recognizes that beauty is an important dimension of human life. Through iconography and church appointments, the beauty of creation becomes a very important means of praising God. The divine gifts of the material world are shaped and fashioned by human hands into an expression of beauty which glorifies the Creator. As the pious woman poured her most precious oil on the feet of Our Lord, Orthodoxy seeks always to offer to God what is best and most beautiful. [Excerpt from the works of Fr. Thomas Fitzgerald]
