However, it is an unfortunate consequence that there are divisions in Christianity, and therefore, we cannot extend to you a general invitation to receive the Eucharist (Holy Communion). Orthodox Christians believe that the Eucharist is an action of the celebrating community, signifying a oneness in faith, life, and worship. Reception of the Eucharist by Christians not fully united with the Orthodox Church would imply a oneness, which does not yet exist, and for which we must all pray. We invite you to receive the blessed and holy bread that is given out to all at the end of the service, and are thrilled that you have joined us this morning! Christ is in our midst! He is and ever shall be!

3 THE SYNAXARION On November 4 th in the Holy Orthodox Church we commemorate our righteous father Ioanikios the Great of Mount Olympus. Verses The Word, Who with a word fixed the earth s foundation, Up from the earth Ioanikios now taketh. On the fourth they dug thee a grave, O Ioanikios. The great spiritual light Ioanikios was born in the village of Marycata in the province of Bithynia. As a youth, he was a shepherd. While tending his sheep, he would often retreat into solitude and remain in prayer the whole day, encircling his flock with the sign of the Cross so that the flock would not stray and scatter. Later, he was taken into the army and displayed marvelous courage. Following his military service, Ioanikios withdrew to Mount Olympus in Asia Minor, where he was tonsured a monk and dedicated himself completely to asceticism until his repose at age 94 in the year 846. He lived in asceticism for over fifty years in various places, and received from God a truly abundant gift of wonderworking. : On this day, we also commemorate the Hieromartyrs Nicander the bishop of Myra and Hermias the priest; Martyr Porphyrios of Ephesus; and Emperor John the merciful. By the intercessions of Thy Saints, O Christ God, have mercy upon us. Amen. 3

The Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians. (2:4-10) Brethren, God, Who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and made us sit with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the coming ages He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God not because of works, lest any man should boast. 6 The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (16:19-31) The Lord said, There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, full of sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man s table; moreover, the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus in his bosom. And he called out, Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us. And he said, Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father s house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment. But Abraham said, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent. Matthew 28: The Kenya Mission team has been invited by His Grace Athanasios, Bishop of Kisumu and West Kenya. TRIP DATES: NOVEMBER 28 - DECEMBER 8, Purpose - Provide Teachings of the Orthodox Faith. The focus is on Icons. The team will be working with youth from the Diocese of Kisumu. The youth retreat will be held for five days at the Kemoloi Boys School in Nandi district. These youth are from diverse backgrounds and different tribes and are very eager to grow in their Orthodox faith, and meet Orthodox Christians from other parts of the world. We will teach them about icons, and the various saints of the Church, as well as do icon related art projects with them. Background - Orthodoxy is relatively new in Kenya, and the Church was founded by two charismatic African men searching for truth and orthodoxia in the 1920 s. Today the number of Orthodox Kenyans tops 600,000, according to the World Council of Churches website. OCMC has been involved in assisting and nurturing the church in Kenya through supporting priests, building schools, and churches. The Orthodox Church in Kenya continues to make great contributions to the social, economic and educational development of the country. Please keep us in prayer as we prepare for this missionary journey. It truly is awesome and humbling at the same time.
