3 What Should I Do For Lent? POPE FRANCIS' 10 Tips Dear Friends - Wednesday is Ash Wednesday - the beginning of our Lenten journey. This bulletin contains a number of suggestions to make Lent meaningful for you and your family. We turn also to the suggestions from our Holy Father - Pope Francis. I pray these will be days of feeling closer to Jesus. It s a relationship we can all benefit from. Many blessings! Fr Bob Every year Catholics try to answer the age old question: What should I do for Lent? Well, who better to pick for as your Lenten spiritual director than Pope Francis? He has some great ideas for you! Here we selected 10 of his best tips: 1 Get rid of the lazy addiction to evil [Lent] is a powerful season, a turning point that can foster change and conversion in each of us. We all need to improve, to change for the better. Lent helps us and thus we leave behind old habits and the lazy addiction to the evil that deceives and ensnares us. GENERAL AUDIENCE, MARCH 5, Do something that hurts Lent is a fitting time for selfdenial; we would do well to ask ourselves what we can give up in order to help and enrich others by our own poverty. Let us not forget that real poverty hurts: no self-denial is real without this dimension of penance. I distrust a charity that costs nothing and does not hurt. LENTEN MESSAGE, Don t remain indifferent Indifference to our neighbor and to God also represents a real temptation for us Christians. Each year during Lent we need to hear once more the voice of the prophets who cry out and trouble our conscience. God is not indifferent to our world; he so loves it that he gave his Son for our salvation. LENTEN MESSAGE, Pray: Make our hearts like yours! During this Lent, then, brothers and sisters, let us all ask the Lord: Fac cor nostrum secundum cor tuum : Make our hearts like yours (Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus). In this way we will receive a heart which is firm and merciful, attentive and generous, a heart which is not closed, indifferent or prey to the globalization of indifference. LENTEN MESSAGE, Take part in the sacraments Lent is a favorable time for letting Christ serve us so that we in turn may become more like him. This happens whenever we hear the word of God and receive the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. There we become what we receive: the Body of Christ. LENTEN MESSAGE, Prayer In the face of so many wounds that hurt us and could harden our hearts, we are called to dive into the sea of prayer, which is the sea of God s boundless love, to taste his tenderness. Lent is a time of prayer, of more intense prayer, more prolonged, more assiduous, more able to take on the needs of the brethren; intercessory prayer, to intercede before God for the many situations of poverty and suffering. HOMILY, MARCH 5, Fasting We must be careful not to practice a formal fast, or one which in truth satisfies us because it makes us feel good about ourselves. Fasting makes sense if it questions our security, and if it also leads to some benefit for others, if it helps us to cultivate the style of the Good Samaritan, who bends down to his brother in need and takes care of him. HOMILY, MARCH 5, Almsgiving Today gratuitousness is often not part of daily life where everything is bought and sold. Everything is calculated and measured. Almsgiving helps us to experience giving freely, which leads to freedom from the obsession of possessing, from the fear of losing what we have, from the sadness of one who does not wish to share his wealth with others. HOMILY, MARCH 5, Help the Poor In the poor and outcast we see Christ s face; by loving and helping the poor, we love and serve Christ. Our efforts are also directed to ending violations of human dignity, discrimination and abuse in the world, for these are so often the cause of destitution. When power, luxury and money become idols, they take priority over the need for a fair distribution of wealth. Our consciences thus need to be converted to justice, equality, simplicity and sharing. LENTEN MESSAGE, 2014 The Lord asks us to be joyous heralds of this 10Evangelize message of mercy and hope! It is thrilling to experience the joy of spreading this good news, sharing the treasure entrusted to us, consoling broken hearts and offering hope to our brothers and sisters experiencing darkness. LENTEN MESSAGE,

4 Spiritual READING for Lent Setting the Tone Matthew Still, Director of Liturgy and Music A Lenten Journey: From Ashes to the Living Font As we enter into yet, another Lenten season, we are once again reminded that we are dust, and to dust we shall return. The sights, the smells, and the sounds all bring us in line with this holy season and help to set the tone of penitence and forgiveness. Dark purple, fragrant incense, and solemn tones transport us to a familiar place each year, where we begin a journey from dead ashes to the font of living water. Perhaps the most pivotal element of the Lenten liturgy is the music. What we hear with our ears and what we sing with our lips will no doubt echo in our hearts throughout the week, outside of Mass, during times of solitude and quiet reflection. Consider praying over some of the texts we sing more frequently, in addition to lending your voice in the worshiping assembly. The depth of meaning will resonate with each step you take until you finally reach the glory of Jesus resurrection from the tomb. During the Lenten season, we will be using some of the Latin Chant Mass parts, with the Greek Kyrie. These are the musical settings of the mass texts that the church calls for all congregations to learn at some point. Other parts of the ordinary of the Mass are suppressed, such as the singing of the Gloria until Holy Thursday during the Triduum. The gospel acclamation, Alleluia, is reserved until the night of the Easter Vigil when we celebrate the Lord s resurrection into glory. Though we will feel a noticeable shift in the mood of the Mass and some of the parts will change, the singing assembly remains a key part of the liturgical celebration. The Chant Mass parts can be found in the Worship hymnal: Kyrie The Forty Days of Lent provide an excellent time to read a book to deepen your spirituality. Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of Faith By Bishop Robert Barron (Image Publishing; sold by Random House) Bishop Barron address the heart of Catholicism from a unique perspective that of beauty. The book contains many interesting stories, biographies and images. Sanctus Agnus Dei (B) The Sound of Silence: Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship, the 2007 US Bishops document offers a starting place to think about the place of silence and song in the Lenten liturgy. Music arises out of silence and returns to silence. God is revealed both in the beauty of song and in the power of silence. The Sacred Liturgy has its rhythm of texts, actions, songs, and silence. Silence in the Liturgy allows the community to reflect on what it has heard and experienced, and to open its heart to the mystery celebrated. Ministers and pastoral musicians should take care that the rites unfold with the proper ebb and flow of sound and silence. The importance of silence in the Liturgy cannot be overemphasized. (Sing to the Lord, #118) Consider practicing your own personal observance of this by spending a few moments in your seat, immediately after the closing hymn, in quiet reflection. By embracing silence we are able to clearly hear the still small voice of calm calling us to peace and holiness. Whether singing or being silent, may we allow this season to be a time when we take inventory of our innerselves and replace the bad with the good. Taking full advantage of everything Lent has to offer will enable us to fully enjoy the rewards of God s Paschal sacrifice. Faith: The Spiritual Thoughts Series By Pope Benedict (USCCB Publishing) This is one of a series of short and easy-to-read books by Pope Benedict XVI. There are 15 other titles in this wonderful series. 6 MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS FOR LENT 2019 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God (Rm 8: 19) Dear Brothers and Sisters Each year, through Mother Church, God gives us this joyful season when we prepare to celebrate the paschal mystery with mind and heart renewed as we recall the great events that gave us new life in Christ (Preface of Lent I). We can thus journey from Easter to Easter towards the fulfilment of the salvation we have already received as a result of Christ s paschal mystery for in hope we were saved (Rom 8:24). This mystery of salvation, already at work in us during our earthly lives, is a dynamic process that also embraces history and all of creation. As Saint Paul says, the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God (Rom 8:19). In this perspective, I would like to offer a few reflections to accompany our journey of conversion this coming Lent. 1. The redemption of creation The celebration of the Paschal Triduum of Christ s passion, death and resurrection, the culmination of the liturgical year, calls us yearly to undertake a journey of preparation, in the knowledge that our being conformed to Christ (cf. Rom 8:29) is a priceless gift of God s mercy. When we live as children of God, redeemed, led by the Holy Spirit (cf. Rom 8:14) and capable of acknowledging and obeying God s law, beginning with the law written on our hearts and in nature, we also benefit creation by cooperating in its redemption. That is why Saint Paul says that creation eagerly longs for the revelation of the children of God; in other words, that all those who enjoy the grace of Jesus paschal mystery may experience its fulfilment in the redemption of the human body itself. When the love of Christ transfigures the lives of the saints in spirit, body and soul, they give praise to God. Through prayer, contemplation and art, they also include other creatures in that praise, as we see admirably expressed in the Canticle of the Creatures by Saint Francis of Assisi (cf. Laudato Si, 87). Yet in this world, the harmony generated by redemption is constantly threatened by the negative power of sin and death. 2. The destructive power of sin Indeed, when we fail to live as children of God, we often behave in a destructive way towards our neighbours and other creatures and ourselves as well since we begin to think more or less consciously that we can use them as we will. Intemperance then takes the upper hand: we start to live a life that exceeds those limits imposed by our human condition and nature itself. We yield to those untrammelled desires that the Book of Wisdom sees as typical of the ungodly, those who act without thought for God or hope for the future (cf. 2:1-11). Unless we tend constantly towards Easter, towards the horizon of the Resurrection, the mentality expressed in the slogans I want it all and I want it now! and Too much is never enough, gains the upper hand. The root of all evil, as we know, is sin, which from its first appearance has disrupted our communion with God, with others and with creation itself, to which we are linked in a particular way by our body. This rupture of communion with God likewise undermines our harmonious relationship with the environment in which we are called to live, so that the garden has become a wilderness (cf. Gen 3:17-18). Sin leads man to consider himself the god of creation, to see himself as its absolute master and to use it, not for the purpose willed by the Creator but for his own interests, to the detriment of other creatures. Once God s law, the law of love, is forsaken, then the law of the strong over the weak takes over. The sin that lurks in the human heart (cf. Mk 7:20-23) takes the shape of greed and unbridled pursuit of comfort, lack of concern for the good of others and even of oneself. It leads to the exploitation of creation, both persons and the environment, due to that insatiable covetousness which sees every desire as a right and sooner or later destroys all those in its grip. 3. The healing power of repentance and forgiveness Creation urgently needs the revelation of the children of God, who have been made a new creation. For if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away; behold, the new has come (2 Cor5:17). Indeed, by virtue of their being revealed, creation itself can celebrate a Pasch, opening itself to a new heaven and a new earth (cf. Rev 21:1). The path to Easter demands that we renew our faces and hearts as Christians through repentance, conversion and forgiveness, so as to live fully the abundant grace of the paschal mystery. This eager longing, this expectation of all creation, will be fulfilled in the revelation of the children of God, that is, when Christians and all people enter decisively into the travail that conversion entails. All creation is called, with us, to go forth from its bondage to decay and obtain the glorious liberty of the children of God (Rom 8:21). Lent is a sacramental sign of this conversion. It invites Christians to embody the paschal mystery more deeply and concretely in their personal, family and social lives, above all by fasting, prayer and almsgiving. Fasting, that is, learning to change our attitude towards others and all of creation, turning away from the temptation to devour everything to satisfy our voracity and being ready to suffer for love, which can fill the emptiness of our hearts. Prayer, which teaches us to abandon idolatry and the selfsufficiency of our ego, and to acknowledge our need of the Lord and his mercy. Almsgiving, whereby we escape from the insanity of hoarding everything for ourselves in the illusory belief that we can secure a future that does not belong to us. And thus to rediscover the joy of God s plan for creation and for each of us, which is to love him, our brothers and sisters, and the entire world, and to find in this love our true happiness. Dear brothers and sisters, the lenten period of forty days spent by the Son of God in the desert of creation had the goal of making it once more that garden of communion with God that it was before original sin (cf. Mk 1:12-13; Is 51:3). May our Lent this year be a journey along that same path, bringing the hope of Christ also to creation, so that it may be set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the glorious liberty of the children of God (Rom 8:21). Let us not allow this season of grace to pass in vain! Let us ask God to help us set out on a path of true conversion. Let us leave behind our selfishness and self-absorption, and turn to Jesus Pasch. Let us stand beside our brothers and sisters in need, sharing our spiritual and material goods with them. In this way, by concretely welcoming Christ s victory over sin and death into our lives, we will also radiate its transforming power to all of creation. SHARING GOD'S BLESSINGS 2019 ANNUAL APPEAL Evangelizing through the Men s and Women s Conferences Each year, the Sharing God s Blessings Annual Appeal funds vital programs and ministries, such as the Office for Evangelization and our annual Men s and Women s Conferences organized by the Men s and Women s Commission of the Archdiocese of Newark. The Office for Evangelization serves as a platform for evangelizing and spreading the Catholic faith in our local community and throughout the Archdiocese. It assists parishes in assessment of their needs in the area of mission and evangelization, offer evangelization seminars to form and train evangelizers, and empower and encourage ecclesial movements throughout the Archdiocese. This year, the Women s Commission Day of Reflection will take place once again at Seton Hall University on Saturday, March 9th and will have an English and Spanish track. The Men s Conference will take place at the Walsh Gym at the University on Saturday, March 19th, also featuring an English and Spanish track. Cardinal Joseph Tobin will celebrate Mass at the conclusion of both events. This is an opportunity to renew our faith, which includes a Holy Hour of adoration and a time for confession. The Women s Commission originally began at various parishes with small groups of women. As interest grew, it became clear that it required a larger venue. Each year, it evangelizes over 1,600 women coming from our 212 parishes. The Men s Conference, now in its 11th year, has over 1,500 participants. Whether it be through the Men s and Women s Conferences or through the Office for Evangelization, your generosity towards the Sharing God s Blessings Annual Appeal has a direct impact on the lives of thousands of men and women who are seeking fellowship and a greater sense of spiritual fulfillment. Your support advances the mission of the Archdiocese of Newark and allows us to continue to proclaim the Gospel.
