Responsory You have made them rulers, *over all the earth. You have... They will always remember your name, O Lord, * over all the earth. Glory... You... C/Z I bow before the cross* made precious by Christ my Master. I embrace it as his disciple. Midday I II Two men followed the Lord from the beginning; one of these was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter. The Lord loved Andrew and cherished his friendship. Andrew said to his brother Simon: We have found the Messiah, and he brought him to Jesus. V The Lord thought me worthy of martyrdom, after calling me to be an Apostle, while fishing on the sea, alleluia. Reading Act 5:12a, 14 Through the hands of the apostles, many signs and wonders occurred among the people. Nevertheless, more and more believers, men and women in great numbers were continually added to the Lord. V/. R/. Their voice has gone out to the limits of the earth. Their words to the ends of the world. Vespers Andrew cried out,* O Good Cross, greatly desired, now made ready for my longing soul. Psalm 109 The Messiah, King and Priest Christ s reign will last until all his enemies are made subject to him (1 Cor 15:25) The Lord s revelation to my Master: Sit on my right: I will put your foes beneath your feet. 3 A prince from the day of your birth on the holy mountains; from the womb before the daybreak I begot you. The Lord has sworn an oath he will not change. You are a priest for ever, A priest like Melchizedek of old. The Master standing at your right hand will shatter kings in the day of his great wrath. He, the Judge of the nations, will heap high the bodies; heads shall be shattered far and wide. He shall drink from the stream by the wayside and therefore he shall lift up his head. I Andrew cried out, O Good Cross, greatly desired, now made ready for my longing soul. For two days* blessed Andrew hung alive on the cross, witnessing to the name of Christ and teaching the people. Psalm 112 How praise worthy the name of the Lord He has cast down the mighty and has lifted up the lowly (Lk 1:52). Alleluia! Praise, O servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord! May the name of the Lord be blessed both now and for evermore! From the rising of the sun to its setting praised be the name of the Lord! High above all nations is the Lord, above the heavens his glory. Who is like the Lord, our God, who has risen on high to his throne yet stoops from the heights to look down, to look down upon heaven and earth? 4 From the dust he lifts up the lowly, from the dungheap he raises the poor to set him in the company of princes, yes, with the princes of the people. To the childless wife he gives a home and gladdens her heart with children. I II For two days blessed Andrew hung alive on the cross, witnessing to the name of Christ and teaching the people. We ought ever to glory* in the cross of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Psalm 115 Thanksgiving in the temple Through Christ let us offer God a continual sacrifice of praise (Heb 13:15). I trusted, even when I said: I am sorely afflicted, and when I said in my alarm: No man can be trusted. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise; I will call on the Lord s name. My vows to the Lord I will fulfill before all his people. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Your servant, Lord, your servant am I; you have loosened my bonds. A thanksgiving sacrifice I make: I will call on the Lord s name. My vows to the Lord I will fulfill before all his people, in the courts of the house of the Lord, in your midst, O Jerusalem. II We ought ever to glory in the cross of our Lord, Jesus Christ. V Blessed Andrew prayed,* O Lord, King of eternal glory, accept me hanging on the Cross. Benedictine Order of Cleveland Sanctoral 4 Copyright 1996

Psalm 138A God beholds all Who has known the mind of God? Or who has been his counselor? (Rm 11:34). O Lord, you search me and you know me, you know my resting and my rising, you discern my purpose from afar. You mark when I walk or lie down, all my ways lie open to you. Before ever a word is on my tongue you know it, O Lord, through and through. Behind and before you besiege me, your hand ever laid upon me. Too wonderful for me, this knowledge, too high, beyond my reach. O where can I go from your spirit, or where can I flee from your face? If I climb the heavens, you are there. If I lie in the grave, you are there. If I take the wings of the dawn and dwell at the sea s furthest end, even there your hand would lead me, your right hand would hold me fast. If I say, Let darkness hide me and the light around me be night, even darkness is not dark for you and the night is as clear as the day. For it was you who created my being, knit me together in my mother s womb. I thank you for the wonders of my being, for the wonders of all your creation. Already you knew my soul, my body held no secret from you when I was being fashioned in secret and moulded in the depths of the earth. Your eyes say all my actions, they were all of them written in your book; every one of my days was decreed before one of them came into being. 6 To me, how mysterious your thoughts, the sum of them not to be numbered! If I count them, they are more than the sand; to finish, I must be eternal, like you. O God, that you would slay the wicked! Men of blood, keep far away from me! With deceit they rebel against you and set your designs at naught. Do I not hate those who hate you, abhor those who rise against you? I hate them with a perfect hate and they are foes to me. O search me, God and know my heart. O test me and know my thoughts. See that I follow not the wrong path and lead me in the path of life eternal. V Blessed Andrew prayed, O Lord, King of eternal glory, accept me hanging on the Cross. Reading Eph 4:11-13 Christ gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers in roles of service for the faithful to build up the body of Christ, till we become one in faith and in the knowledge of God s Son, and form that perfect man who is Christ come to full stature. Responsory Proclaim among the nations * the glory of God, proclaim... His wonders to all peoples, * the glory of God. Glory... Proclaim... 8 He, the Judge of the nations, will heap high the bodies; heads shall be shattered far and wide. He shall drink from the stream by the wayside and therefore he shall lift up his head. I You are wholly beautiful, O Mary; *there is no trace of original sin in you. Your robe is as white as snow; * your face is as radiant as the sun. Psalm 112 How praise worthy the name of the Lord He has cast down the mighty and has lifted up the lowly (Lk 1;52) Praise, O servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord! From the dust he lifts up the lowly, from the dungheap he raises the poor to set him in the company of princes, yes, with the princes of the people. To the childless wife he gives a home and gladdens her heart with children. I II The robe you wear is as white as virgin snow; your face is as radiant as the sun. You are the glory of Jerusalem; *you are the joy of Israel; you are the honor of our people. Psalm 121 Jerusalem the Holy City We have no lasting city; we are "of the household of the faith"(gal 6:10) Benedictine Order of Cleveland Sanctoral 8 Copyright 1996

I rejoiced when I heard them say: Let us go to God s house. And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. Jerusalem is built as a city strongly compact. It is there that the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord. For Israel s law it is, there to praise the Lord s name. There were set the thrones of judgment of the house of David. For the peace of Jerusalem pray: Peace be to your homes! May peace reign in your walls, in your palaces, peace! For love of my brethren and friends I say: Peace upon you! For love of the house of the Lord I will ask for your good. II You are the glory of Jerusalem; you are the joy of Israel; you are the honor of our people. V Draw us, O Virgin immaculately conceived; *may we run after you in the fragrance of your anointing. Psalm 126 God's Blessing give success "Be not anxious, you Father knows you need all these things (Mt 6:25) If the Lord does not build the house, in vain do its builders labor; if the Lord does not watch over the city, in vain does the watchman keep vigil. In vain is your earlier rising, your going later to rest, you who toil for the bread you eat, when he pours gifts on his beloved while they slumber. 10 Truly sons are a gift from the Lord, a blessing, the fruit of the womb. Indeed the sons of youth are like arrows in the hand of a warrior. O the happiness of the man who has filled his quiver with these arrows! He will have no cause for shame when he disputes with his foes in the gateways. V Draw us, O Virgin immaculately conceived; may we run after you in the fragrance of your anointing. Reading Rm 8:29-30 Those whom God foreknew He predestined to share in the image of His Son. Those He predestined He likewise called; those He called He also justified. Responsory I know by this, *that you love me. I know... For my enemy does not triumph over me, *that you love me. Glory.. I know.. Vigils 1st Noct Ant At her conception *Mary received a blessing from the Lord and mercy from God her savior. Psalm 8 Man made in God's image Under His feet should lie all things (Heb 2:5-15) How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth! Your majesty is praised above the heavens; on the lips of children and of babes you have found praise to foil your enemy, to silence the foe and the rebel. When I see the heavens, the work of your hands, the moon and the stars which you arranged, what is man that you should keep him in mind, mortal man that you care for him? Benedictine Order of Cleveland Sanctoral 10 Copyright 1996

Yet you have made him little less than a god; with glory and honor you crowned him, gave him power over the works of your hand put all things under his feet. All of them, sheep and cattle, yes, even the savage beasts, birds of the air, and fish that make their way through the waters. How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth! Psalm 23 The Ruler of the Universe enter His dwelling place "Let him enter the King of Glory! Come Lord Jesus" (Rv 22:20) The Lord s is the earth and its fullness, the world and all its peoples. It is he who set it on the seas; on the waters he made it firm. Who shall climb the mountain of the Lord? Who shall stand in his holy place? The man with clean hands and pure heart, who desires not worthless things, (who has not sworn so as to deceive his neighbor.) He shall receive blessings from the Lord and reward from the God who saves him. Such are the men who seek him, seek the face of the God of Jacob. O gates, lift high your heads; grow higher, ancient doors. Let him enter, the king of glory! Who is the king of glory? The Lord, the mighty, the valiant, the Lord, the valiant in war. O gates, lift high your heads; grow higher, ancient doors. Let him enter, the king of glory! Who is he, the king of glory? He, the Lord of armies, he is the king of glory. 12 Psalm 44 Royal wedding song "Israel of God! The new Jerusalem prepared as a bride adorned for her husband (Rv 21:2) My heart overflows with noble words. To the king I must speak the song I have made; my tongue as nimble as the pen of a scribe. You are the fairest of the children of men and graciousness is poured upon your lips: because God has blessed you for evermore. O mighty one, gird your sword upon your thigh; in splendor and state, ride on in triumph for the cause of truth and goodness and right. Take aim with your bow in your dread right hand. Your arrows are sharp; peoples fall beneath you. The foes of the king fall down and lose heart. Your throne, O God, shall endure for ever. A scepter of justice is the scepter of your kingdom. Your love is for justice; your hatred for evil. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above other kings: your robes are fragrant with aloes and myrrh. From the ivory palace you are greeted with music. The daughters of kings are among your loved ones. On your right stands the queen in gold of Ophir. Listen, O daughter, give ear to my words: forget your own people and your father s house. So will the king desire your beauty; He is your Lord, pay homage to him. And the people of Tyre shall come with gifts, and the richest of the people shall seek your favor. The daughter of the king is clothed with splendor, her robes embroidered with pearls set in gold. She is led to the king with her maiden companions. They are escorted amid gladness and joy; they pass within the palace of the king. Benedictine Order of Cleveland Sanctoral 12 Copyright 1996

Sons shall be yours in place of your fathers: you will make them princes over all the earth. May this song make your name for ever remembered. May the peoples praise you from age to age. Ant At her conception Mary received a blessing from the Lord and mercy from God her savior. V/. R/. The Almighty God has surrounded me with His power. And kept me in the way of holiness. 2nd Noct Ant God helped her from the dawn of her life; * the Most High has sanctified her as his tent. Psalm 84 Our salvation is near God blessed the land, the land to whcih our Savior came (Origon) O Lord, you once favored your land and revived the fortunes of Jacob, you forgave the guilt of your people and covered all their sins. You averted all your rage, you calmed the heat of your anger. Revive us now, God, our helper! Put an end to your grievance against us. Will you be angry with us for ever, will your anger never cease? Will you not restore again our life that your people may rejoice in you? Let us see, O Lord, your mercy and give us your saving help. I will hear what the Lord has to say, a voice that speaks of peace, peace for his people and his friends and those who turn to him in their hearts. His help is near for those who fear him and his glory will dwell in our land. Mercy and faithfulness have met; justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice look down from heaven. Copyright 1996 Sanctoral 13 Benedictine Order of Cleveland

The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him and peace shall follow his steps. Psalm 86 Jerusalem, the mother of all nations The Jerusalem aboe is free and she is our mother (Gal 4:26) On the holy mountain is his city cherished by the Lord. The Lord prefers the gates of Sion to all of Jacob s dwellings. Of you are told glorious things, O city of God! Babylon and Egypt I will count among those who know me; Philistia, Tyre, Ethiopia, these will be her children and Sion shall be called Mother for all shall be her children. It is he, the Lord Most High, who gives each his place. In his register of peoples he writes: These are her children and while they dance they will sing: In you all find their home. Psalm 95 The Lord, King and Judge of the whole world They were singing something like a new hymn in the presence of the Lord (Rv 14:3) O sing a new song to the Lord, sing to the Lord all the earth. O sing to the Lord, bless his name. Proclaim his help day by day, tell among the nations his glory and his wonders among all the peoples. The Lord is great and worthy of praise, to be feared above all gods; the gods of the heathens are naught. Benedictine Order of Cleveland Sanctoral 14 Copyright 1996

It was the Lord who made the heavens, his are majesty and state and power and splendor in his holy place. Reading Acts 26:16b-18 I have appeared to you to designate you as my servant and as a witness to what you have seen of me and what you will see of me. I have delivered you form this people and from the nations, to open the eyes of those to whom I am sending you, to turn them from darkness to light and from the Dominion of Satan to God; that through their faith in me they may obtain the forgiveness of their sins and a portion among God s people. 24 Responsory You are a chosen instrument, * O holy apostle Paul. You are... Preacher of truth to the whole world, * O holy apostle Paul. glory... You are... C/Z Go, Ananias, and find Saul;* he is praying. This man is the instrument I have chosen to bring my name to the Gentiles, and their kings and to the people of Israel. Midday I II Saul, my brother,* I have been sent by the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the way here, to help you recover your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit. To me to live is Christ,* and to die is gain. I must glory* in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. V I have fought the good fight,* I have finished the course, I have kept the faith. Reading 1 Tm 1:14-15 The grace of our Lord has been granted me in overflowing measure, along with the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. You can depend on this as worthy of full acceptance: that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Of these I myself am the worst. V/. R/. Rejoice and be glad, says the Lord. Because your names are inscribed in heaven. Vespers I have planted,* Apollo watered, but God has given the growth, alleluia. Psalm 109 The Messiah, King and Priest Christ's return will last until all his enemies are made subject to him (I Cor 15:25) The Lord s revelation to my Master: Sit on my right: I will put your foes beneath your feet. 25 The Lord will send from Sion your scepter of power: rule in the midst of all your foes. A prince from the day of your birth on the holy mountains; from the womb before the daybreak I begot you. I I have planted, Apollo watered, but God has given the growth, alleluia. Gladly will I glory in my weaknesses,* that the strength of Christ may dwell in me. Psalm 112 Praise worth is the name of the Lord He has cast down the mighty and has lifted up the lowly (Lk 1:52) Alleluia! 26 From the dust he lifts up the lowly, from the dungheap he raises the poor to set him in the company of princes, yes, with the princes of the people. To the childless wife he gives a home and gladdens her heart with children. I II Gladly will I glory in my weaknesses, that the strength of Christ may dwell in me. God s Grace* has not been fruitless in me, but his favor remains in me always. Psalm 115 Thanksgiving in the Temple Through Christ let us offer to God a continual sacrifice of praise (Heb 13:15) I trusted, even when I said: I am sorely afflicted, and when I said in my alarm: No man can be trusted. II God s Grace has not been fruitless in me, but his favor remains in me always. V Three times I was beaten with rods;* I was stoned once, and shipwrecked three times for the sake of Christ. 27 Psalm 138 God beholds all Who has known the mind of God? Or who has been his counselor? (Rm 11:34) O Lord, you search me and you know me, you know my resting and my rising, you discern my purpose from afar. 28 To me, how mysterious your thoughts, the sum of them not to be numbered! V Three times I was beaten with rods; I was stoned once, and shipwrecked three times for the sake of Christ. Reading 1 Cor 15:9-10 I am the least of the apostles; in fact, because I persecuted the church of God, I do not even deserve the name. But by God s favor I am what I am. This favor of his to me has not proved fruitless. Indeed, I have worked harder than all the others, not on my own but through the favor of God. Responsory I praise you, O Lord, * in the fullness of my heart. I praise... And I will glorify your name among the peoples. * in the fullness of my heart. I praise... FEBRUARY February 2 Presentation of the Lord Feast (If this feast falls on a Sunday, the texts for First Vespers are from Second Vespers, except for the following): Reading Heb 10:5-7 On coming into the world, Jesus said: Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you have prepared for me; Holocausts and sin offerings you took no delight in. Then I said, As is written of me in the book, I have come to do your will, O God. Responsory The Lord has made known, *His saving power, the Lord... 30 C/M The old man carried the child,* but the child ruled the old man. The Virgin gave birth to this child, remaining a virgin after his birth. She herself adored the one whom she bore. Vigils 1st Noct Ant Come, let us ascend the mountain of the Lord and enter the house of the God of Jacob, since the law will come out of Sion and word of the Lord from Jerusalem. Psalm 8 God's majesty and man's dignity He has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the Church (Eph 1:22) How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth! Yet you have made him little less than a god; with glory and honor you crowned him, gave him power over the works of your hand put all things under his feet. All of them, sheep and cattle, yes, even the savage beasts, birds of the air, and fish that make their way through the waters. How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth! Psalm 23 The Lord's coming into the temple Christ opened for us the gates of heaven in his assumption of the flesh (St Irenaeus). Benedictine Order of Cleveland Sanctoral 30 Copyright 1996

The Lord s is the earth and its fullness, the world and all its peoples. Psalm 44 The royal nuptials The groom is here! Come out and greet him (Mt 25:6) My heart overflows with noble words. Copyright 1996 Sanctoral 31 Benedictine Order of Cleveland

* * * Listen, O daughter, give ear to my words: forget your own people and your father s house. So will the king desire your beauty: he is your Lord, pay homage to him. * * * Sons shall be yours in place of your fathers: you will make them princes over all the earth. May this song make your name for ever remembered. May the peoples praise you from age to age. Ant Come, let us ascend the mountain of the Lord and enter the house of the God of Jacob, since the law will come out of Sion and word of the Lord from Jerusalem. V/. R/. Lo, I will come to live in your midst. And you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you. Benedictine Order of Cleveland Sanctoral 32 Copyright 1996

2nd Noct Ant They brought Jesus up to Jerusalem so that He could be presented to the Lord, as it is written in the law of the Lord. Psalm 84 Our salvation is near God blessed the land, the land to which our Savior came (Origen). O Lord, you once favored your land and revived the fortunes of Jacob, you forgave the guilt of your people and covered all their sins. * * * I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace, peace for his people and his friends and those who turn to him in their hearts. His help is near for those who fear him and his glory will dwell in our land. Mercy and faithfulness have met; justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice look down from heaven. The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him and peace shall follow his steps. Copyright 1996 Sanctoral 33 Benedictine Order of Cleveland

Psalm 86 Jerusalem, the mother of all nations The Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother (Gal 4:26) On the holy mountain is his city cherished by the Lord, The Lord prefers the gates of Zion to all Jacob's dwellings. Of you are told glorious things, O city of God! "Baylon and Egypt I will count among those who know me; Pilistia, Tyre, Ethiopia, these will be her children and Zion shall be called 'Mother' for all shall be her children." It is he, the Lord Most High, who gives each his place. In his register of peoples he writes: "These are her children" and while they dance they will sing: "In you all find their home." Psalm 95 The Lord, king and judge of the whole world They were singing something like a new hymn in presence of the Lamb (cf Rv 14:3). O sing a new song to the Lord, sing to the Lord all the earth. O sing to the Lord, bless his name. Proclaim his help day by day, tell among the nations his glory and his wonders among all the peoples. The Lord is great and worthy of praise, to be feared above all gods; the gods of the heathens are naught. It was the Lord who made the heavens, his are majesty and state and power and splendor in his holy place. Benedictine Order of Cleveland Sanctoral 34 Copyright 1996

Give the Lord, you families of peoples, give the Lord glory and power, give the Lord the glory of his name. Bring an offering and enter his courts, worship the Lord in his temple. O earth, tremble before him. Proclaim to the nations: God is king. The world he made firm in its place; he will judge the people in fairness. Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad, let the sea and all within it thunder praise, let the land and all it bears rejoice, all the trees of the wood shout for joy. At the presence of the Lord for he comes, he comes to rule the earth. With justice he will rule the world, he will judge the peoples with his truth. Ant They brought Jesus up to Jerusalem so that He could be presented to the Lord, as it is written in the law of the Lord. V/. R/. The sacrifice of Judah and Jerusalem will please the Lord. As in the days of old, as in years gone by. Lauds Invitatory Behold, the Lord the Ruler comes to his holy temple; Rejoice and be glad, O Sion, as you run out to meet your God. I II The holy and devout Simeon looked for the redemption of Israel and the Holy Spirit was with him. It was revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not experience death, until he had seen the Lord. Simeon took the child into his arms, and giving thanks he blessed the Lord. V A revealing light to the Gentiles, the glory of your people Israel. Copyright 1996 Sanctoral 35 Benedictine Order of Cleveland

Reading Mal 3:1 Lo, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me; and suddenly there will come to the temple the Lord whom you seek, and the messenger of the covenant whom you desire. Responsory Worship the Lord, * in his holy court. Worship... Bring the Lord homage and praise, * in his holy court. Glory... Worship... C/Z When the parents brought in the child Jesus, Simeon took him in his arms and blessed God. Midday I II The parents of Jesus* brought him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. Lift up your gates,* O princes, and raise your portals and the King of Glory will come in. The offered to the Lord a pair of turtle doves or two young pigeons. V Sion, prepare your wedding chamber to receive Christ the King. Reading Is 42:13 The Lord goes forth like a hero, like a warrior he stirs up his ardor; He shouts out his battle cry, against his enemies he shows his might. V/. R/. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of our God. Sing with joy to God, all the earth. Vespers (Psalms from 2nd vespers of Sunday I) I II The holy and devout Simeon looked for the redemption of Israel and the Holy Spirit was with him.
