So that we might be in touch with you, please sign one of our Welcome Books. You are invited to Coffee Hour following the 11:00am service. During the service you will see that we generally stand to hear the Gospel, and to recite the Creed. When we pray or receive Holy Communion, some stand and some kneel. If repeated standing and sitting is uncomfortable for you remain seated. The Liturgy this morning is taken from The Book of Common Prayer and A New Zealand Prayer Book. LITTLE ONES QUIET SPACE FOR INFANTS-TO-CRAWLERS is available at the back of the church under the table for anyone who gets restless in the pews. QUIET TOYS AND COLORING MATERIALS are located in the back of the Church. Where are the RESTROOMS? Look for the angel window above a door at the front of the Nave, to the right of the Lectern/Pulpit. Go through that door, walk straight ahead. Turn left at the hallway. There are two restrooms: the 1st one is small; the 2 nd (large) one is wheelchair- accessible, and has a baby changing table. Additional restrooms are on lower level, down the stairs from the hallway just after you go through the angel window door. The People s responses are indicated in BOLD PRINT. 3 THE WORD OF GOD Celebrant People Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins. His mercy endures forever. Hear what our Lord Jesus has said: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is closely related to it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 22:37-40 Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. Almighty and most merciful God, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against your holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. O Lord, have mercy on us, spare those who confess their faults, restore those who are penitent, according to the promises made to the world in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, most merciful Lord, for his sake, that we may move toward a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of your holy Name. Amen. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF NUMBERS From Mount Hor the Israelites set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; but the people became impatient on the way. The people spoke against God and against Moses, Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food. Then the Lord sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord to take away the serpents from us. So Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said to Moses, Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live. 6 A READING FROM ST. PAUL S SECOND LETTER TO THE EPHESIANS You were dead through the trespasses and sins in which you once lived, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else. But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ-- by grace you have been saved-- and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God-- not the result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life. Chapter 2:1-10 Reader The Word of the Lord People Thanks be to God. John Stainer Jesus said, Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. Jeanne Person The People are invited to stand as they are able for the Creed & Prayers THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People God of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ you promise to hear us when we pray to you in faith with thanksgiving. We pray for one another, for our families and friends, through whom we learn to love and to be loved. Thank you for all who care for us. Give us grace to serve Christ by serving our neighbors and our community, loving others as he loves us. Silence We thank you for the unfailing love you hold out to everyone in Jesus Christ. Comfort and heal those in sorrow, need, sickness or any other trouble. Give them courage and hope in their distress, and bless those who minister to them. Silence We remember with gratitude your many gifts to us in creation and the rich heritage of this land. Help us and people everywhere to share with justice and peace the resources of the earth. Give wisdom to those in authority among us and to all leaders of the nations. Silence 7

8 We pray for your Church throughout the world, thanking you for all who serve Christ and his kingdom. By your Spirit strengthen your people for their work and witness in the world. Unite us in your truth and love, that we who confess your name may also reflect your glory. Silence We remember with thanksgiving all who have died in Christ, and we rejoice at the faithful witness of your saints in every age, praying that we may enter with them into the unending joy of your heavenly kingdom. Silence Merciful God, you look with compassion on all who turn to you. Hear the prayers of your people. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Those things, good Lord, that your servants have prayed for, give us grace to work for; and in the purpose of your love answer our prayers and fulfil our hopes for Jesus sake. Amen. 10 It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and every-where to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who was tempted in every way as we are, yet did not sin. By his grace we are able to triumph over every evil, and to live no longer for ourselves alone, but for him who died for us and rose again. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: SANCTUS S

11 Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of 11

12 sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. At Easter we will collect these reflections into a booklet and share them with the parish to enjoy and learn from. Next year parishioners will be able to follow these reflections through Lent. Your reflection may take any form, written or illustrated, and may be as extensive or as brief as you like. We will brainstorm with you about how to do it in a way that suits your talents and interests! 20 'March For Our Lives' gun-control march in Washington Christ Church has chartered one 55 passenger bus at a cost of $60.00 per person round trip. Date / Time of Departure: Saturday morning at 4:30am on March 24 Destination: National Mall in Washington DC. The bus will leave from the Barclay Street Parking Lot (South side of the church - Bell Tower Location) at 4:30am. Approximate time of arrival in Washington DC is 10:00am. Leaving Washington DC for the return trip to Poughkeepsie New York Saturday March 24 at 4:00pm. Approximate arrival time in Poughkeepsie 9:30pm The bus is opened to "first come, first serve" parish members of Christ Church. The bus is also opened to one parish friend for each individual parish family from Christ Church (i.e.: Two Christ Church members from one family can bring one friend; or if one Christ Church member is going, then one friend can come.) The Cost is still the same: $60.00 per person round trip.
