Christ Episcopal Church In the City of Poughkeepsie, New York Fourth Sunday after Pentecost June 17, 2018 at eleven o clock in the morning WELCOME TO ALL GUESTS AND VISITORS Our parish family is blessed by your presence today. So that we might be in touch with you, please sign one of our Welcome Books. You are invited Coffee Hour following the 11:00am service. During the service you will see that we generally stand to hear the Gospel, and to recite the Creed. When we pray or receive Holy Communion, some stand and some kneel. If repeated standing and sitting is uncomfortable for you remain seated. The Liturgy this morning is taken from The Book of Common Prayer and A New Zealand Prayer Book. LITTLE ONES QUIET SPACE FOR INFANTS-TO-CRAWLERS is available at the back of the church under the table for anyone who gets restless in the pews. QUIET TOYS AND COLORING MATERIALS are located in the back of the Church. Where are the RESTROOMS? Look for the angel window above a door at the front of the Nave, to the right of the Lectern/Pulpit. Go through that door, walk straight ahead. Turn left at the hallway. There are two restrooms: the 1st one is small; the 2 nd (large) one is wheelchair- accessible, and has a baby changing table. Additional restrooms are on lower level, down the stairs from the hallway just after you go through the angel window door. The People s responses are indicated in BOLD PRINT. The People are invited to stand as they are able and join in the Processional Hymn PRELUDE "Schlummert ein, irh matten Augen" (Slumber, my weary eyes) arranged from Cantata No. 82 J. S. Bach

Opening Hymn Christ is made the sure foundation (Westminster Abbey) Hymn

THE WORD OF GOD Celebrant People Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God s kingdom, now and forever. Amen THE COLLECT FOR PURITY Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Gloria S-280 3

COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant People Celebrant The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Keep, O Lord, your household the Church in your steadfast faith and love, that through your grace we may proclaim your truth with boldness, and minister your justice with compassion; for the sake of our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF EZEKIEL Thus says the Lord God: I myself will take a sprig from the lofty top of a cedar; I will set it out. I will break off a tender one from the topmost of its young twigs; I myself will plant it on a high and lofty mountain. On the mountain height of Israel I will plant it, in order that it may produce boughs and bear fruit, and become a noble cedar. Under it every kind of bird will live; in the shade of its branches will nest winged creatures of every kind. All the trees of the field shall know that I 4

am the Lord. I bring low the high tree, I make high the low tree; I dry up the green tree and make the dry tree flourish. I the Lord have spoken; I will accomplish it. Chapter 17:22-24 Reader The Word of the Lord People Thanks be to God. PSALM 92 1 It is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord, * and to sing praises to your Name, O Most High; 2 To tell of your loving-kindness early in the morning * and of your faithfulness in the night season; 3 On the psaltery, and on the lyre, * and to the melody of the harp. 4 For you have made me glad by your acts, O Lord; * and I shout for joy because of the works of your hands. 11 The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, * and shall spread abroad like a cedar of Lebanon. 12 Those who are planted in the house of the Lord * shall flourish in the courts of our God; 13 They shall still bear fruit in old age; * they shall be green and succulent; 14 That they may show how upright the Lord is, * my Rock, in whom there is no fault. READING FROM ST. PAUL S SECOND LETTER TO THE CORINTHIANS We are always confident; even though we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord-- for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. For all of us must appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense for what has been done in the body, whether good or evil. For the love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. And he died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them. From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human 5

point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! Chapter 5:6-10, Reader The Word of the Lord People Thanks be to God. SEQUENCE HYMN We walk by faith (St. Botolph) Hymn

THE GOSPEL The People are invited to stand as they are able for the reading of the Gospel. Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus said, The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come. He also said, With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade. With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples. Chapter 4:26-34 Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. SERMON Rev. Susan B. Fortunato The People are invited to stand as they are able for the Creed & Prayers THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into 7

heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People Heavenly Father, you have promised to hear when we pray in the name of your Son. Therefore in confidence and trust we pray for the Church: (Particular intercessions/thanksgivings may be offered.) Father, enliven the Church for its mission that we may be salt of the earth and light to the world. Breathe fresh life into your people. Give us power to reveal Christ in word and action. We pray for the world: especially the South Sudan. Creator of all, lead us and every people into ways of justice and peace. That we may respect one another in freedom and truth. Awaken in us a sense of wonder for the earth and all that is in it. Teach us to care creatively for its resources. We pray for the community: (Particular intercessions/thanksgivings may be offered.) God of truth, inspire with your wisdom those whose decisions affect the lives of others that all may act with integrity and courage. Give grace to all whose lives are linked with ours. May we serve Christ in one another, and love as he loves us. We pray for those in need: especially, Lillian, Amity & Stephen, Nancy, Irene, Jeanmarie, Laura, Don, Jason, Doug, Pat, Pat & Burt, Jeff, Shari, Ann, Sally, Charlotte, Thomas & Sean, Lynn, Jenna, Bonnie, Betty. God of hope, comfort and restore all who suffer in body, mind or spirit. May they know the power of your healing love. Make us willing agents of your compassion. Strengthen us as we share in making people whole. We remember those who have died and those who mourn. We remember with thanksgiving those who have died in the faith of Christ, and those whose faith is known to you alone. Father, into your hands we commend them. 8

Give comfort to those who mourn. Bring them peace in their time of loss. We praise you for all your saints who have entered your eternal glory. May their example inspire and encourage us. We pray for ourselves and our ministries: (Particular intercessions/thanksgivings may be offered and the prayers conclude with one of the following.) Lord, you have called us to serve you. Grant that we may walk in your presence: your love in our hearts, your truth in our minds, your strength in our wills; until, at the end of our journey, we know the joy of our homecoming and the welcome of your embrace, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE PEACE Celebrant People The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS THE CELEBRATION OF THE EUCHARIST THE OFFERTORY Celebrant Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and sacrifice to God. OFFERTORY SOLO "Pastorale", arranged from Pastorale for Organ in F J. S. Bach THE DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Celebrant People Celebrant People Celebrant People The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and every-where to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. 9

For by water and the Holy Spirit you have made us a new people in Jesus Christ our Lord, to show forth your glory in all the world. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: SANCTUS S-129 We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." Therefore, according to his command, O Father, 10

We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD Celebrant Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; FRACTION ANTHEM Hymn. 513 People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. 11
