Before the weekend Customary for the Ordination and Consecration of James Russell Kendrick as IV Bishop in the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast Instructions for Acolytes Customary, page 8 Prior to your arrival to the Expo, please label the crosses, torches, and torch stands that you have brought. Due to fire marshal concerns for Expo Hall, we can only use oil burning torches for this service. Oil for the torches will be provided at the Expo Hall. Acolytes should vest in their typical Sunday worship vestments from their local churches. Please wear safe, close-toed dark shoes and dark colored socks for men. Friday practice On Friday, July 24, 2015, at 2:30 PM, acolytes for the consecration service will meet at the Expo Hall. This practice is mandatory. We will meet in vesting room B, which is the ladies locker room. From there, we will practice lining up for our procession to start the service. Next, we will practice processing in, how to put up crosses and torches, and determine where people will sit. There is a gospel procession and a limited procession out of Expo Hall; we will rehearse these as well. On Saturday, all acolytes will need to be at the Expo Hall by 12:30 PM. Please eat a meal prior to arriving. Only water and light snacks will be provided. It is important to have had a meal before the service, as this service will be at least two hours. Main procession at the beginning of the service There are actually four separate processions that will act as one procession for this service. On Saturday, the Acolyte Co-chairs and four vergers will help to line up the acolytes and members of the processions. It is important to listen to the instructions given. We will process in from the rear and side of the main room. From the back, the procession will come down a main aisle. The procession will pass the font in the middle of the main aisle and continue toward the altar platform. At the altar platform, the procession will turn right and continue to the acolyte seating area, the racks for the crosses and the stands for the torches. After putting up your crosses and torches (and extinguishing the flame), the acolytes will take their seats. Facing the altar from the back of the room, the acolyte seating area is to the right of the altar. When passing the altar platform, please do not reverence the altar platform. Gospel procession During the second reading, the crucifer, torch bears, and book bearer that are the gospel procession team will gather and ready themselves by lighting their torches and getting the cross. Upon hearing the music for the gospel start, the procession will begin. This hymn has five short verses and a refrain. There should be plenty of time to process. The procession will leave the acolyte area, travel toward the altar platform, and turn left on to the main aisle. The deacon

Customary, page 9 reading the gospel will link up with the procession in front of the altar platform. The procession will travel to the font and stop on the altar platform side of the font. The book bearer will hold the book for the deacon as the gospel is read. Upon completion of the gospel reading, the procession will then process back to the racks and put up the cross and torches (and extinguishing the torches). Communion The acolytes will not assist with the preparation of the altar for communion or with the administration of the bread and wine. The acolytes will receive communion from priests at a station near the acolyte area. Upon receiving communion, acolytes are to return to their seats. If any acolytes are gluten-free, please let the Acolyte Co-chairs know at the practice on Friday. Procession out of the Expo Hall At the conclusion of the service, the Presiding Bishop, Presiding Bishop-elect, the new Central Gulf Coast bishop, and two retired bishops of the Central Gulf Coast will asperge the congregation (the act of taking blessed water and sprinkling it on members of the congregation). During the post-communion prayer, the first set of cross/torches from Procession Four will ready themselves by getting their cross and torches (and lighting the torches). After the dismissal by the deacon, and when the hymn begins, the crucifer and torch bearers begin to process out of Expo Hall by walking from the acolyte area to the altar platform and then turn left to the main aisle; they will process up the main aisle, passing the font, and going to the back of the room. The procession will then turn right and travel into the hall where the procession into Expo Hall began. Only the altar party and bishops will follow the crucifer and torch bearers. Those acolytes who do not process are to stay in the acolyte area for the rest of the hymn. After the service Once the service is over, then the acolytes should gather their respective crosses, torches, and torch stands, go to the vesting room, and change clothes. Please find the appropriate people who will be taking the crosses, torches, and torch stands back to your local churches. You are cordially invited to attend the reception at Christ Church Cathedral following your completion of the service. One other item of note There is a free overnight event at Camp Beckwith for the youth of our Diocese. Transportation between Expo Hall and Beckwith will be provided. Meals will be provided. On Friday night, there will be a concert with Fran McKendree performing. 11 Customary, page 11 After all the processions are in and the people are settled, the service begins. The litany is on the front end of the service. First, there is an opening prayer and then a presentation of our bishopelect. Following the presentation and a brief question and answer exchange between the Presiding Bishop and the congregation, the Presiding Bishop gives a final statement inviting the congregation to pray. At this time, the litany should begin. The litanists leave their seats and travel to the lectern. It is located (facing the stage) on the left and is on the ground level. Sincere there are four litanists, the prayers have been divided as such. Remember, this is a prayer. You will need to lead the congregation, though you do not need to continually make eye contact with the congregation. Please read in a way that reflects being a worship leader. Once the litany has ended, the Presiding Bishop will invite the congregation to pray and she will pray a concluding collect. Please remain standing in your places at the lectern during this invitation and prayer. After the amen, please return to your seats and enjoy the service. Your job as litanists is done. Communion The litanists will receive communion from priests at a station near where you are sitting. Upon receiving communion, litanists are to return to their seats. If any litanists are gluten-free, please let Canon Wagner know at the practice on Friday. 12 Customary for the Ordination and Consecration of James Russell Kendrick as IV Bishop in the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast Instructions for the Distribution of Communion Customary, page Each Eucharistic team shall consist of three people: one to bear the basket and distribute bread, one to bear chalice and one altar guild member to assist. The altar is on an elevated stage; therefore, team members will have to ascend stairs to pick up elements and then descend stairs to get to their stations, and we would like to avoid spillage en route. To that end the two clergy persons will bear the flagon of consecrated wine and basket of consecrated bread to their station, with the altar guild member going directly to the station at the peace filling of vessels will occur once team members are in place, and the purificators will be on the table. (no paten needed, as wafers will be served from basket). Altar guild members will be responsible for keeping sufficient supplies of wafers and wine at each station. 2. For the rehearsal, please plan to arrive by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, July 24. You do not need to be vested for rehearsal. Please DO NOT BRING VALUABLES that you cannot carry on your person (e.g. pocket books, shoulder bags, back packs, etc.). A minimum of items that you bring along for both the rehearsal and the service will be preferable; essentially an outer garment and your vestment bag are ideal. 3. Upon entering you may proceed to Vesting Room A if you have brought vestments. This is also the vesting room for processing clergy. YOU MAY LEAVE VESTMENTS IN THE VESTING ROOM ON FRIDAY. 4. Vesture for Ministers of Communion is the same as for other Episcopal clergy: cassock, surplice, and red stole. 5. The vesting room will be open at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Processions will begin to form in respective vesting areas at 1:15, with all in place by 1:30. Ministers of Communion process in Procession 3, just behind CGC clergy, and are seated in area marked for Ministers of Communion. 6. In total there will be ten (10) communion stations located throughout the auditorium. The PB and Russell, with Walt and Martha, (2) will communicate the Altar party; four (4) additional stations will begin in the front of the hall, three communicating the choir (175 members) and the fourth the acolytes. The other four (4) Eucharistic teams will be assigned to the stations beginning in the back of Expo Hall. The six (6) Eucharistic teams in the front of hall will move to fill up the front stations when/as they can, leaving the two (2) front stations for the bishops, each with an assisting minister. The

Customary, page 13 positioning/placement of each team will be noted by tape markings on the floor. There will be two (2) ushers at each station to guide people to receive communion from each team. 7. At the Passing of the Peace, the ministers of communion will assume their positions at the foot of the stage to prepare for the Eucharist, while the altar guild members each go to their assigned table. The clergy duos will stand together for the Eucharistic Prayer facing in toward the altar. 8. Oblation Bearers: Please move to the back of the auditorium at the Peace. The Rev. Dan Wagner will be on hand to assist oblation bearers in assuming the implements they will bring to the altar. 9. There will be one (1) credence table on the stage. Initially this credence table will hold baskets of wafers and flagons of wine. 10. After the Breaking of the Bread / Fraction the Deacons will place wafers and wine on the credence table. Once the Deacons have placed the elements on the credence table each team will begin to move to the credence table. The Deacons will distribute flagons and breadbaskets to team members. 11. One communion station will be designated as gluten-free. Instructions for Communion in the program will indicate that there is a gluten-free station marked as such. There will be two persons administering wafers at that station. 12. As soon as clergy have picked up a flagon and basket, walk as a team in a dignified manner to your designated spot. Remember to exercise caution ascending and descending steps. 13. When you have arrived at your position, your altar guild member will pour wine into the chalice. Paper purificators will be used for this service, and there will be a plentiful supply at each table. 14. The Eucharistic teams communicating the Altar party will consist of the Presiding Bishop and Bishop Kendrick, paired with Walt Kindergan and Martha Harris. The Presiding Bishop may change this configuration at her rehearsal; we will adjust as directed. 15. EACH TEAM WILL COMMUNICATE ITSELF, after communicating all others. Ushers will begin guiding people to your team as soon as the team is ready. When all ambulatory people have received, including the ushers, please be aware of differentlyabled people seated in your section, and bring the Sacrament to them once you have finished communicating your section. Ushers will alert you if this is necessary. Then communicate among yourselves. 16. Once you are sure that everyone in your section has received Communion, please go to the ablution stations at the back of back of Expo Hall. Please do not return consecrated

Customary, page 14 bread and wine, or any vessels to the Altar/stage. Pitchers of water will be available at each ablution station for you to clean the chalices. Receptacles for soiled purificators will be available as well. Leave clean, unused purificators on the table at your ablution station. Leave the flagons, chalices, and baskets there as well. Altar guild personnel will remove the tables and implements during the post-communion prayer and before the final procession begins. 17. At the rehearsal we will describe where you return after communion and how you get there. 18. The Excelsior Band will lead everyone to the reception at Christ Church Cathedral. Let the party begin!

Kendrick Customary, page 15 Customary for the Ordination and Consecration of James Russell Kendrick as IV Bishop in the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast Instructions for Ushers Important Preliminary Information Usher training will begin promptly at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at the Mobile Convention Center Expo Hall. You must receive training, or you will not be permitted to usher. Training will end by noon, and the doors will be open to the public. All ushers should be in place. Keep in mind that this is a church service, so please dress up jackets and ties are suggested for men; skirts and blouses, dresses, or nice slacks and blouses for women. Wear comfortable shoes as you may be on your feet for long periods of time. What Will the Ushers Do at the Consecration? The ushers primary responsibility is to move people in an orderly fashion from one point to another at various specified times during the day. These are the main duties to be carried out by the ushers at the Consecration: Seating guests and dignitaries assisting those in wheelchairs and with any mobility issues directing those participating in the ceremony to the dressing rooms distributing service bulletins directing those participating in the processions to the procession gathering areas collecting the offering directing congregation members to communion stations. Ushers will need to be prepared to assist anyone in need of emergency assistance. Assisting with the Procession: The Procession will begin promptly at 2:00 p.m. There are four processions. There will be a Verger for each procession, and ushers may be called upon by that person to assist with the lining up. Passing the alms basins for the collection of offering. Ushering people to the appropriate communion station at the appropriate time and assisting those distributing communion as needed. Assisting with the closing procession and directing guests to the reception, which will occur immediately after the service at Christ Church Cathedral.

Kendrick Customary, page 16 Important Points There will be several teams of ushers. Each team will have a Team Leader. Each Team will be assigned to a particular area of auditorium for all duties. Each usher must know the location of the bathrooms, hearing impaired area, mobility impaired seating areas, and the identity of security/emergency personnel. Each usher must wear his or her name tag at all times. These will be provided at the rehearsal. Purses should either be left in your car or given to a friend or relative in the auditorium. Ushers should smile and be pleasant to all attending the consecration. Remember, this is a joyful occasion and the Expo Hall is now a sacred worship space! Ushers should conduct themselves as they would in their home church. Each usher will be given at the rehearsal a map, detailing specific areas within Expo Hall. Seating There will be clearly labeled reserved seating for processions, for several specific groups that will be noted, including clergy spouses, Bishop-elect Kendrick s family, and parishioners from Bishop-elect Kendrick s former churches. Mobility impaired seating is to the right of the stage. Hearing impaired seating is to the right of the stage. All other seating is festival seating. All guests may sit where they choose. Ushers may be called upon to help people find open seating. No tickets are required for this service. Special Sections The choir section of the hall to the left of the altar is reserved entirely for musicians and members of the choir. Processions These groups will gather in their respective vesting areas at 1:30 p.m. and will proceed to the entrance hallway at approximately 1:45 p.m. When all have been seated and the ceremony is ready to begin, the ushers may take their assigned seats.

Kendrick Customary, page 17 Important Points to Keep in Mind Flash pictures are prohibited in Expo Hall. If you see someone taking flash pictures quietly inform the person of the rule and ask them to put their camera or video equipment away immediately. Passing the alms basins for the collection At the time of the Offertory the ushers will receive and distribute the alms basins. Ushers will work the sections in pairs alternating rows one on each side. The baskets will be passed from the beginning of each row to the end and will be handed to the next row by an usher. Be sure those in mobility impaired or wheelchair areas are included as well. At the conclusion of the collection the Team Leaders will empty the collection buckets into two large baskets and bring the baskets to the stage, to a place designated by Assistant MC The Rev. Martha Harris. Dwight Babcock from the diocesan office will take responsibility for gathering, counting, and transporting the gathered funds following the service. Ushering people to the appropriate communion station at the appropriate time At the appropriate time the ushers will assist in the distribution of communion. There will be one or more communion stations in each section of the hall. Each communion team will consist of a chalice bearer, a clergyperson to distribute communion bread and one Altar Guild member. Ushers will be assigned to each section. An usher will invite members of the congregation to leave the row from one end and return in line to the other end, starting with the row closest to the station. This will create a smooth circular pattern that will expedite the process in an orderly manner. An usher will assist in helping those communion ministers carrying the implements down from the stage to the communion stations. The ushers will be trained in the specifics of communion choreography during the rehearsal Saturday morning. Assisting with Stage Steps A pair of ushers will be posted at the steps on either side of the stage. These ushers should be in place once the processions begin in order to assist the altar party as they ascend the steps. Readers, family members of the bishop and others will need assistance here at various points in the service. Likewise, at the closing procession ushers will need to assist with descending the steps. Two (2) of these ushers will move the seven (7) chairs at the front of the stage to the back during the peace. Assisting with the closing Processional and directing guests to the Reception The procession on the stage will be the only procession to exit during the recessional hymn. There will be a recessional hymn followed by the Excelsior Band. Once the procession is out of the auditorium, ushers will direct those guests who wish to attend the reception. Some ushers will be assigned to assist those in wheelchairs or those requiring other assistance.
