1 CELEBRATION OF CONFIRMATION IN A PARISH GUIDELINES Spring 2018 I. THE LITURGY FORM: A. Introductory Comments: 1. Revised Guidelines: This is the latest version of the guidelines for the planning of the celebration of Confirmation in a parish with Bishop Loverde or another confirming Bishop. Please replace any versions of the guidelines dated before Spring 2018 with this most recent update. 2. Liturgy Form: The Liturgy Form for the confirmation must be filled out completely, approved and signed by the pastor or parochial administrator, and returned the Bishop s Office no later than two weeks before the scheduled Confirmation. a. The fax number for the Bishop s Office is For Two or more Confirmations at same parish: When a parish is hosting two or more confirmation ceremonies on the same day that mainly share the same liturgical details, one liturgy form may be used for both, with notes on any differences between the two ceremonies (e.g. the different starting times, number of candidates, concelebrants, deacons). 4. Please Tiffany Nguyen (t.nguyen@arlingtondiocese.org) for a PDF version of the Confirmation Liturgy Form. B. The Rite of Confirmation Outside the Mass 1. The Rite for Confirmation usually takes place during Mass. 2. Reasons for Confirmation Rite Outside of the Mass ( Confirmation Ceremony ): a. For a valid reason, the pastor or parochial administrator may choose a Confirmation ceremony over a Mass for its brevity. For example, the ceremony may be preferred when scheduling a large number of confirmandi (75+) on a weeknight during the school year, on a 1 Revised 01/23/2018

2 Saturday when morning Masses, weddings, confessions, and vigil Masses may also be planned, or when there are two or more confirmations scheduled for the parish on the same day. b. In addition, the schedule of the confirming Bishop may require the choice of a Confirmation ceremony over Confirmation within the Mass. In such a case, a representative of the Confirming Bishop will contact the pastor or parochial administrator to discuss this possibility. c. NB: If Archbishop Timothy Broglio is the Confirming Bishop, it is always his preference to celebrate the Confirmation within the Mass. 3. The Confirmation Ceremony consists of an opening prayer (omitting the penitential rite and the Gloria), the Liturgy of the Word with homily, the Rite of Confirmation, the prayer of the faithful, the Our Father and a solemn blessing. It does not include a Communion service. 4. If the Confirmation takes place outside the Mass, only fill out the liturgical details marked by an asterisk (*) on the Confirmation Liturgy Form. C. Mass Setting 1. The use of the prayers and readings of the Mass depend on the liturgical celebrations proper to the day. 2. Usually the Mass setting will be from the Ritual Mass for the Conferral of Confirmation (Roman Missal, Ritual Masses, I, 4). 3. However, Appendix B is a list of the liturgical celebrations that prohibit the celebration of the ritual Mass for Confirmation per the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), no 372. a. On these days, the prayers of the Mass are chosen from proper of the day, as is the inclusion of the Gloria. b. If the proper Mass is one of those listed in Appendix B, the rite of Confirmation is celebrated after the Gospel (as it is in the Ritual Mass for Confirmation). D. Readings for Ceremony or Mass 1. Number of Readings: A first reading, a responsorial psalm, an optional second reading and a Gospel are to be chosen for the Confirmation liturgy 2. For Ceremony or Ritual Mass: The readings will be chosen from the list of the readings proper to the celebration of Confirmation (Lectionary for Mass, Volume IV, nos ). a. Appendix A provides the approved list of Confirmation readings. b. NB: During the Easter season, after the octave of Easter, Archbishop Broglio prefers that the first reading be from the Acts of the Apostles and the second reading be from the New Testament epistles. These readings must also be chosen from Appendix A. 2 Revised 01/23/2018

3 3. For Confirmation within a Mass that is not the Ritual Mass: On the days when the Ritual Mass for Confirmation cannot be used (Appendix B), the readings must be those proper to the day. However, on such days there is an option to choose one reading from the Confirmation selections (per Intro to Lectionary, no. 88). Bishop Loverde directs that the reading of Acts 2:1-6, 14, 22-23, 32-33, (no in the Lectionary, Vol IV) replace the proper New Testament reading for the day. If there is already a reading from the Book of Acts proper to the day, it is to be replaced by Acts 2:1-6, 14, 22-23, E. Music 1. Please follow the norms set forth by the GIRM and Music in Catholic Worship. It is preferred that the processional and communion hymns are congregational, the acclamations (Gloria, Alleluia and acclamation before the Gospel, Sanctus, memorial acclamation and Amen) are sung, and the responsorial psalm is sung. 2. The same norms hold forth for the Ceremony outside of Mass with regards to relevant music. 3. The Gloria: The third typical edition of the English translation of the Roman Missal calls for the Gloria to be included in every Ritual Mass for Confirmation. However, when the ritual Mass is not allowed (see Appendix B), the choice of the Gloria is decided by the Mass proper to the day. II. THE MINISTERS AND CANDIDATES A. Ministers 1. Clergy who will be participating in the Confirmation liturgy should be recorded on the Liturgy Form. If the clergy are from outside of the Diocese of Arlington, be certain to obtain the documentation from their diocese or religious order that they are in good standing. 2. Servers: Five experienced servers are needed for the celebration of the Liturgy: the cross bearer (who will also be the book bearer), two acolytes, one miter bearer, and one crozier bearer. a. A sixth server is needed if incense is used. b. Please be sure that all servers have arrived and are vested thirty minutes before the Mass. The Master of Ceremonies who accompanies the Confirming Bishop will prepare the servers before the liturgy. 3. Lectors: Please be sure that the lectors are properly trained and have reviewed and practiced their reading before the liturgy. 4. A note regarding candidates as ministers: In order to focus on the role which is proper to them in the liturgy, it is preferred that the candidates do not serve in other liturgical ministries such as servers or lectors for the readings. However, they may be chosen to read the prayer of the faithful. 3 Revised 01/23/2018

4 B. Preparing the Candidates 1. School candidates and CCD candidates are to be combined, with no distinction between them, in the planning and celebration of the Confirmation liturgy. 2. Rehearsal: The parish is to conduct a general rehearsal of the candidates, their sponsors, and the servers before the night of the Confirmation. 3. Seating at Confirmation: To facilitate the Bishop s ease in preaching to the candidates, they should sit together as a group on both sides of the aisle and in the front pews. Sponsors are to be seated as a group in a separate section behind the candidates. Do not alternate rows of candidates and their sponsors. 4. Cards with Confirmation Name: Each candidate should have a card bearing on one side the confirmation name only, printed in large letters. The confirmation name is to be a Christian name, whether the baptismal name is kept or a new name is chosen. 5. Confirmation Robes: For the sake of modesty and in order to reflect the sacredness of the occasion, all candidates are to wear Confirmation robes during the liturgy and at the reception. Confirmandi must also wear robes in all photographs with the confirming Bishop. a. The choice to have the parents of the confirmandi rent or purchase the robes is up to the discretion of the pastor or parochial administrator, as parish circumstances and needs vary. The pastor or parochial administrator may also choose to maintain a supply of robes at the parish. The pastor or parochial administrator is free to select the vendor of his choice. b. Confirmation robes will be red or white. A combination of both colors may be used among the members of the Confirmation class for example, girls might be in white and boys in red. Under no circumstances may the candidates wear Confirmation stoles, scarves, yokes, or anything resembling the liturgical stoles that are the proper vestments of the diaconate and priesthood alone. This includes robes sewn with a contrasting vertical band that gives the appearance of being a stole. 6. Attire: Please instruct the candidates to wear appropriate attire underneath their robes. Boys are to wear dress pants, dress shoes, shirts, and ties. Girls are to wear modest dresses, skirts or dress slacks with blouses, and dress shoes, with minimal and tasteful jewelry and makeup. 4 Revised 01/23/2018

5 III. ON DAY OF CONFIRMATION A. Preparations for arrival of the Bishop 1. Parking: Please reserve a parking space for the confirming Bishop near the location of where he will be vesting. 2. Room for Confirming Bishop to Vest: The Bishop will bring his own alb, vestments and vimps for the miter and crozier bearers. If possible, please prepare a room for the Bishop and his Master of Ceremonies to vest that is separate from where the other clergy and altar servers vest. Ideally, the Bishop s vesting room would include a table or other large surface for writing and laying out vestments. B. Preparations in the Church 1. The Master of Ceremonies accompanying the Bishop will be working with the Bishop and the servers before the liturgy. He cannot be responsible for setting up the liturgical books, the credence table or the items in the sanctuary. This responsibility must be taken up by a member of the parish staff. 2. Sanctuary: A presiding chair should be arranged for the Bishop along with chair(s) for the deacon(s) and/or concelebrant(s). The altar should be clear of everything except the altar cloth, candles (if they are not part of the procession) and the Gospel book (if is it used and not part of the procession). If worship aids are provided, place a copy on all the chairs in the sanctuary for the ministers and servers. 3. Microphone: Either a cordless microphone or a microphone with a cord long enough to walk in the main aisle between the candidates should be available for the Bishop. If it is cordless, please place it in the Bishop s vesting room. 4. Servers: There should be chairs for all the servers and a chair for the Master of Ceremonies. The Master of Ceremonies is to be seated near the book bearer, the miter bearer and the crosier bearer, and all four of them are to be seated on the same side of the sanctuary as the Bishop. 5. The Missal: [M Mass only] The Missal should be at the cross bearer/book bearer's chair. The Bishop will bring the pontifical book with him and it will be placed with the Missal for the book bearer. The prayers of the Mass will be For the Conferral of Confirmation in the Ritual Masses section of the Roman Missal. Bishop Loverde prefers to use the Preface of the Holy Spirit II as the preface to the Eucharistic Prayer. Please place ribbons at these prayers in the Missal, as well as at the penitential rite. 6. Credence table for confirmation: Please have a medium-sized lemon cut into four wedges and placed in a bowl large enough for the Bishop to comfortably place both of his hands in to crush the lemon wedges. In addition, place a pitcher of plain water, not soapy water, and two white hand towels with the bowl of lemon slices on the credence table. An additional table may be 5 Revised 01/23/2018

6 needed if the credence table is too crowded. Bishop Loverde will bring the sacred chrism with him and it will be placed with these items. 7. Credence Table for Mass: [M] Same as above, as well as including the vessels and items used at Mass. The chalice should be properly prepared with enough large celebrant hosts on the paten for the Bishop, concelebrants and the assisting deacons. The towel and basin for the lavabo should also be set out on the table separately. After the distribution of Holy Communion, the servers will wash the Bishop s hands when he returns to his chair. Therefore, it is helpful though not necessary to provide an extra water cruet, basin and purificator for this purpose. The basin used for this post-communion purification should be emptied and rinsed in the sacrarium, and the purificator washed with the sacred linens. 8. Offertory Gifts: [M] Gifts of bread and wine should be on a table for the offertory procession, and gift bearers chosen and prepared before the ceremony begins. No other gifts should be presented besides bread and wine. C. Photographs/Video 1. During Ceremony: The Bishop will abide by the rules of the pastor or parochial administrator concerning photography and video recording during the ceremony. If either is permitted, they must be done quietly, discreetly, and from a reasonable distance so as not to intrude on the sacredness of the ceremony or cause distractions. Under no circumstances are those taking photos or video to be permitted in the sanctuary or in the front aisle where the anointing takes place. Ushers should be on hand to exercise gentle direction in this regard. 2. After Ceremony: The Bishop welcomes all the newly confirmed and their families to pose for photographs after the ceremony at the reception hall (if there is a reception), in the church, or outside if the weather permits. Please have an area set aside for photos with a chair for the Bishop to be seated. Please assign one or more staff members or volunteers to remain near the Bishop at the beginning of the line for the entirety of the photographs to organize the newly confirmed and their families and help the flow of the line. The Master of Ceremonies will not be available for this task. These line/picture facilitators are needed to ensure all the newly confirmed have the opportunity for a picture with the Bishop and all takes place in a timely fashion. IV. THE CONFIRMATION LITURGY A. Note: The following description is for the parts of the Mass. For the confirmation ceremony, ignore the sections specific to Mass (between Prayers of the Faithful and 6 Revised 01/23/2018

7 Prayer After Communion). There is an Our Father included in the Confirmation ceremony, but there is no specific direction associated with it. B. Procession: 1. The procession of confirmandi: Before the liturgical procession starts, the confirmandi should already have processed in and taken their places in the front center pews with their sponsors in the rows behind them. The candidates are not to be included in the procession with the Bishop that begins the liturgy. 2. The Honor Guard: If there is an honor guard of the Knights of Columbus, they should process in directly in front of the liturgical procession when the processional hymn begins. While they are not part of the liturgical procession of ministers, they are the escorts to the procession. 3. The liturgical procession consists of the thurifer (if needed), cross bearer, the acolytes, [optionally, any lay people who are to be in the sanctuary (e.g., lectors, extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist, cantor, etc.)], a deacon/lector with Book of the Gospels, the concelebrants, the Master of Ceremonies, and the Bishop accompanied by the deacon(s) and miter and crozier bearers. The procession moves into the vestibule of the church, then up the center aisle to the sanctuary. After arriving in the sanctuary, the proper reverences should be made, and each person goes to his or her place. C. Introductory Rites: The usual form is followed for the Mass -- greeting and penitential rite and Gloria (unless omitted See Appendix B) and the collect. For the ceremony, there is no penitential rite and only a collect. There are to be no comments to the congregation by the pastor/administrator at this time. D. Readings: Please be sure the lectors have been prepared before the liturgy. The candidates should not be the lectors for the readings, for they have a separate liturgical role in the Confirmation. The readings are to be read from a lectionary and not from the program or a printed sheet. E. Proclamation of the Gospel: The deacon -- or in the absence of a deacon the pastor or parochial administrator -- will proclaim the Gospel. 1. The Gospel must be proclaimed from a Book of the Gospels or a lectionary. 2. If there is incense, it is imposed by the Bishop with the assistance of the deacon when the Alleluia begins. The thurifer kneels before the Bishop for the imposition of incense. 3. During the Alleluia, the deacon or priest approaches the Bishop, who is seated, asks for his blessing ( Your blessing, Father ) and bows to receive it; the deacon does not kneel to receive the blessing. He then proceeds to the ambo to proclaim the Gospel. If there is a procession with the Book of the Gospels, it begins after the Bishop s blessing. 7 Revised 01/23/2018

8 4. After the Gospel proclamation, the deacon or priest does not reverence (kiss) the book, but takes the book to the Bishop and holds it open for the Bishop to reverence. The Bishop may take the book from the deacon or priest to bless the people and then hand it back, or he may not. In either case, the deacon or priest will hold the book until the Master of Ceremonies takes it from him. F. Presentation of Candidates: Immediately after the Gospel, the candidates to be confirmed are formally presented. The pastor or parochial administrator -- or in his absence one of the parochial vicars or a deacon goes to the ambo and says the following words (found in Appendix C) Your Excellency, the parish community of wishes to present to you its young men and women who are prepared and are ready to receive the fullness of Christian initiation in the sacrament of confirmation. Each candidate has been well instructed and is accompanied by a sponsor. It is my privilege to present them to you at this time. All candidates please stand. The presentation is not a time to foster attention on the Bishop by way of thanks, or to offer a last-minute exhortation to the candidates. It is simply a formal introduction of the candidates, and thus it is requested that the text provided be the only words offered. If desired, the assembled people may show their approval by applause at the conclusion of the presentation of the candidates to the Bishop. G. Homily: The homily is given by the confirming Bishop. The Bishop may walk among the confirmandi while preaching to them, so please have a wireless or handheld microphone available. H. Reception of the Sacrament: At the conclusion of the homily, the Bishop will ask the candidates to stand. 1. Renewal of Baptismal Promises: The Bishop will lead the candidates in the renewal of their Baptismal promises. The candidates are to respond I do, loudly and clearly to each of the questions the Bishop presents to them. 2. Laying on of Hands: Candidates remain standing for the prayer and imposition of hands. It is important that the candidates understand that the sacramental action begins when the Bishop extends his hands. 3. Anointing with Chrism: After the prayer, the Bishop receives the miter, the crozier (if he desires) and the chrism. Two assisting clergy (or laypersons when clergy are not available) will rise and stand on either side of the Bishop as the candidates come forward with their sponsor behind him or her, forming two lines in front of the Bishop. a. It is beneficial to have someone assisting the candidates and sponsors in forming the two lines. 8 Revised 01/23/2018

9 b. When the candidates reach the front of the line, they need to stand close to the Bishop so that he does not have to call them forward in order to reach their foreheads. Putting a mark on the floor where the candidates are to stand may prove helpful for rehearsal and during the liturgy. While one candidate is being confirmed, the other should step forward and be in position to receive the Sacrament from the Bishop. Both lines should always have a person at the front near the Bishop to aid in the flow of the anointing. c. When the candidate is to receive the sacrament, he or she hands the card with the confirmation name to the assisting clergy or layperson, who in turn holds that card for the Bishop to read. Please do not read the name aloud to the Bishop. At this time, the right hand of the sponsor is to be on the on the right shoulder of the candidate. d. The form of the sacrament is: (Name), be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit. The candidate responds: Amen to the words of the Bishop during the anointing. Then the Bishop places his hand on the shoulder of the newly-confirmed and says Peace be with you, and the candidate responds, And with your spirit. Candidates should be well prepared to answer Amen and And with your spirit without prompting. The assisting clergy or layperson should not respond if the candidate hesitates or forgets. e. When a newly confirmed receives the greeting of peace, he or she is to return to the pews and kneel or be seated, while his or her sponsor does the same. Please do not have the newly confirmed remain standing during the confirmation rite. I. Renewal of Commitment to Witness to Christ [Optional at the discretion of the Pastor or Parish Administrator]: After the Bishop has washed his hands of chrism after the conferral of Confirmation upon the children of the Latin Church, children from the Eastern Rite and the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church who have already been confirmed may be called forward and presented to the Bishop to receive a blessing as they renew their commitment to give witness to Christ. 1. The confirming Bishop is to be made aware in advance of the pastor or parochial administrator s decision to offer this blessing during the liturgy so that he may properly explain to the congregation the significance of the Renewal of Commitment to Witness to Christ. The pastor or parochial administrator should submit with the Liturgy Form the names and Catholic rites of each previously confirmed person who is to receive the blessing. The pastor or parochial administrator should also provide the confirming Bishop with the text of the Renewal of Commitment to Witness to Christ prior to the Confirmation Mass with the names included (Appendix D). 9 Revised 01/23/2018

10 2. Eastern Catholic Church: Children baptized in an Eastern Catholic Church receive the Sacrament of Confirmation (or the Mystery of Chrismation as it is known in the East) as well as the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist immediately after baptism. Therefore, those children are not to be confirmed. However, if they have been in formation with the confirmandi, they may come forward to receive the Renewal of Commitment to Witness to Christ. 3. Latin Rite Catholics: Children of the Latin rite who are in formation with the confirmation class yet have previously received the Sacrament of Confirmation may also come forward (together with any Eastern Catholic children who may be present) to renew their commitment to give witness to Christ. 4. Orthodox Christians and other non-catholic Christians: Because there is not full communion between the Orthodox Christians and other non-catholic Christians, any non-catholic children should not present themselves before the Bishop for the Renewal of Commitment to Witness to Christ, even if they have been in formation with their Catholic classmates. However, if any non- Catholics have been in formation at the parish, the Bishop may choose to acknowledge them at the end of the Confirmation. J. No Creed: The Creed is not recited, even if the proper of the day calls for it (e.g., Sunday Mass), since a profession of faith has already taken place with renewal of Baptismal promises. K. Prayer of the Faithful: After the confirmation ceremony is concluded and the Bishop returns to his chair and removes his miter, he will stand and introduce the Prayer of the Faithful. 1. The Prayer of the Faithful to be used in the liturgy is found in Appendix C. If additional intentions are added by the pastor or parochial administrator, please send the final list of intentions to Tiffany Nguyen the Office of the Bishop. 2. The newly confirmed may be lectors for these intercessions. 3. Since there is no Creed recited, the lectors must be prepared to come forward immediately after the washing of the Bishop s hands at the end of the Confirmation rite (or after the Renewal of Commitment to Witness to Christ, if one takes place). L. Preparation of Altar and Offertory Procession: There should be an offertory procession with some of the newly confirmed bringing the gifts to the altar. The Master of Ceremonies will motion for the procession to begin after the altar is prepared. The offertory procession should not begin until the Bishop has risen from his chair to receive the gifts. In some instances, the Master of Ceremonies will ask that the gifts will be brought to the Bishop at his chair. 10 Revised 01/23/2018

11 M. Eucharistic Prayer: 1. As noted, unless required by one of the liturgical days listed in Appendix B, the prayers of the Mass will be For the Conferral of Confirmation in the Ritual Masses section of the Roman Missal. Bishop Loverde prefers to use the Preface of the Holy Spirit II as the preface to the Eucharistic Prayer. 2. The confirming Bishop will select the Eucharistic Prayer. Priest concelebrants should pray the parts of the Eucharistic Prayer which they say together with the Bishop in subdued voices so that the Bishop's voice is the only one clearly audible to the congregation. 3. Parts of the Eucharistic Prayer for the concelebrants will be assigned to the main concelebrants by the Master of Ceremonies. Each of the first three Eucharistic prayers has an insert for the Confirmation Mass that will be placed in the Missal by the Master of Ceremonies. N. Distribution of Holy Communion: Please note on liturgy form whether Holy Communion is to be distributed under both species. The Bishop will distribute Holy Communion in the center. Others should be assigned specific places. Sufficient ministers should be available for an orderly and expeditious distribution of Holy Communion. All ordinary ministers of Holy Communion (priests and deacons) are to be used before any extraordinary ministers. Please inform the lay ministers of this in advance to avoid confusion in the sanctuary. O. Purification of the Vessels: When the Bishop has finished distributing Holy Communion, he returns to his chair. At that time, two servers will purify his hands with a lavabo bowl, cruet or pitcher of water, and a purificator. A deacon or priest should be assigned to purify the vessels at the credence table or altar. A deacon must purify at the credence table. P. Prayer After Communion and Announcements: The Bishop will pray the Prayer after Communion, after which is the appropriate time for the brief comments of the pastor or parochial administrator. Following these comments, the Bishop may choose to add his final remarks. No additional speakers should address the congregation at this time. Q. Final Blessing and Recessional: Everyone stands as the Bishop gives the final blessing. The final dismissal is given by the deacon, or Bishop if there is no deacon. The Bishop and the ministers in the sanctuary are first to process out of the church, immediately followed by the newly confirmed. Bishop Loverde will hand out prayer cards to the newly confirmed after the liturgy, so please have them remain in two orderly lines as they leave the church immediately after the Bishop. 11 Revised 01/23/2018

13 APPENDIX B LITURGICAL DAYS THAT PROHIBIT THE CELEBRATION OF THE RITUAL MASS FOR CONFIRMATION Per the GIRM no. 372, a Ritual Mass for the Conferral of Confirmation and the prayers and readings associated with it -- cannot be used: a. 16 APPENDIX D: RENEWAL OF COMMITMENT TO WITNESS TO CHRIST Print for Liturgy if there are previously Confirmed who will present themselves to the Bishop for a blessing. After concluding the conferral of Confirmation, the Bishop washes his hands. He then says the following: And now I call forward the members of this class who were confirmed before today that they might renew their commitment to witness to Christ by lives of faithful service to the gospel. The young people come forward and stand before the Bishop. He then questions them. My dear young people, prior to this day, you received the gift of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation that you might be a witness to the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, will you continue, with all of your classmates and with all who have been confirmed, to give your life completely in the service of all, as did Christ, who came not to be served but to serve? R./ I will. May you, and all the confirmed, be always ready to live the gospel and proclaim to all the world Christ crucified, who lives and reigns for ever and ever. R./ Amen.
