August 21, 2016: The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost at 10:30am Welcome! Wherever you are on your journey of faith, there is a place for you at Holy Communion. Prelude: Sarabande on Land of Rest Gerald Near Gathering Song Please stand. Over My Head Opening Hymn: Please stand. New Britain LEVAS 181 Opening Acclamation Blessed be the one, holy, and living God. Glory to God for ever and ever.
2 The Collect of the Day The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Grant, O merciful God, that your Church, being gathered together in unity by your Holy Spirit, may show forth your power among all peoples, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 1st Lesson Jeremiah 1:4-10 The word of the Lord came to me saying, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations." Then I said, "Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy." But the Lord said to me, "Do not say, 'I am only a boy'; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you, Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord." Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the Lord said to me, "Now I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant." The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 71:1-6 read responsively, by verse In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge; * let me never be ashamed. In your righteousness, deliver me and set me free; * incline your ear to me and save me. Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe; * you are my crag and my stronghold. Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked, * from the clutches of the evildoer and the oppressor. For you are my hope, O Lord God, * my confidence since I was young. I have been sustained by you ever since I was born; from my mother's womb you have been my strength; * my praise shall be always of you. 2nd Lesson Hebrews 12:18-29
3 You have not come to something that can be touched, a blazing fire, and darkness, and gloom, and a tempest, and the sound of a trumpet, and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that not another word be spoken to them. (For they could not endure the order that was given, "If even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned to death." Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, "I tremble with fear.") But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. See that you do not refuse the one who is speaking; for if they did not escape when they refused the one who warned them on earth, how much less will we escape if we reject the one who warns from heaven! At that time his voice shook the earth; but now he has promised, "Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heaven." This phrase, "Yet once more," indicates the removal of what is shaken-- that is, created things-- so that what cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe; for indeed our God is a consuming fire. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Holy Gospel Please stand. Luke 13:10-17 The congregation is invited to sing the Alleluia twice to the tune of Over My Head. (See p. 1) The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Now Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, "Woman, you are set free from your ailment." When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God. But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the sabbath, kept saying to the crowd, "There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day." But the Lord answered him and said, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it water? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?" When he said this, all his opponents were put to shame; and the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things that he was doing.
4 The Gospel of our Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The congregation is invited to sing the Alleluia twice to the tune of Over My Head. The Sermon Please be seated at the invitation of the Preacher. The Rev. Marc Smith The Nicene Creed Please stand. Enriching Our Worship We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People Book of Common Prayer, p.387 Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one. In the Diocese of Missouri we pray for Church of the Advent in Crestwood. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you. That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for Michael, our presiding bishop, George Wayne our bishop and for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.
5 We pray for Barack, our president; the members of Congress; the Supreme Court; Jay, our governor; and for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world. That there may be justice and peace on the earth. We give you thanks for all the blessings of this life, especially those celebrating a birthday this week: Martha Bonds, Stephanie Boyer and Callum Docherty. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. We pray for all who are deployed to the Middle East, especially Corrine Lamberson; and for those on our prayer list. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to the departed eternal rest; Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. Silence The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect. Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Welcome and Announcements Please be seated. Offertory Anthem: The Prayer David Foster, Carole Bayer Sager, Alberto Testa, and Tony Renis

And also with you. Enriching Our Worship
7 Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. The presider offers our thanks to God for the grace and mercy made available to us in Christ. In response all sing:
8 The presider gives thanks to God for Christ s redeeming work and remembers Jesus last supper with his disciples. Then the presider invites the people to respond: Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The presider then concludes with prayer for the Holy Spirit to sanctify the bread, the wine, and the gathered congregation. The Eucharistic prayer concludes with a plea for the coming of God s reign. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. The congregation sings the Great AMEN two times to the tune of Over My Head (see p. 1). The Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread God of promise, you have prepared a banquet for us. Happy are those who are called to the Supper of the Lamb.
9 Administration of the Sacrament You are invited to receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Gluten Free wafers are available on request, from the minister.
