1 Spiritual watchfulness and alertness. Watch, therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming (Matthew 24:42) S a i n t S o p h i a s G r e e k O r t h o d o x C h u r c h W a r i n g R o a d S y r a c u s e, N e w Y o r k P h o n e ( ) F a x ( ) Snow Cancellations JANUARY 2019 NEPSIS Last year, something happened - more than once - that I didn t like at all. The weather (snow) was bad (or, was forecast to become bad), and people would want me to cancel whatever. Meetings, activities, services. Soon my phone would fill with messages: , text, voice mail, carrier pigeon. Well, not the birds, but the other ones. All suggesting that I cancel all events. Every other church is doing it, or, we cancel if JD schools are cancelling, and they re cancelling, or, we ll get to church and won t be able to get back home. And so on. I turn on the radio, and all the news is all about the coming storm. Store shelves are bare as everyone stocks up for days of deprivation and misery, they say. This is predicted to be the worst winter storm of the decade. I go to my favorite weather app, and there s a red alert from the National Weather Service: stay home, do not drive, do not go outside with exposed skin, it will freeze in 30 to 45 seconds. The predictions are virtually apocalyptic. So I cancel. Calls are made, the website updated, perhaps a listserv sent out. Everyone breathes a sigh of relief. Then, about an hour before the event should have taken place, the sky clears and the sun comes out. It looks like a typical beautiful day in Syracuse, ideal for outdoor activities. Perhaps some ice skating, or a parade. Or, driving to church. What happened? I got fooled again. Certainly, this does not happen every time there is a prediction of a major weather event sometimes they actually happen. But last year, St. Sophia s was hosting the upstate New York GOYA Lenten retreat, and the day before was a snowy day. Everyone said we should cancel, and we did. However, the next morning was poetically beautiful and lovely. Yes, there was snow on the ground. It s upstate New York - we get snow. But GOYAns from any of the upstate churches would have had no trouble getting here. Cancelling that retreat was not my call, but when it happened, I came to a decision. I m not going to cancel activities or services at St. Sophia s because of forecasts of snow. If you re reading this, you re responsible enough to decide if you should go out or not. If I don t cancel a church service or meeting and I m the only one to show up, that s fine. I m just very uncomfortable being the one who makes the call to cancel something, only to have the weather change significantly for the better. I do not want to disparage the meteorological profession. Theirs is a difficult task, and throughout history meteorologists have saved many lives. I love tracking weather I have three weather apps on my phone, and I like to, as is the motto of one of them, know before (they say we ll have 50 degree weather on my day off this week - this makes me very happy). But winter storms are unpredictable, and the apocalyptic warnings are only accurate 50% of the time. In addition, weather changes quickly in Syracuse. Dire warnings can turn bucolic in a matter of minutes. Safety first. You decide. If you set out for church and the roads are bad, turn back. If you look out your window and the snow is flying sideways, stay home. I m not saying that we should ignore the weather, only that each of us can call it a yes-or-no ourselves. God bless you and your family with health, prosperity, and joy in this blessed new year! 3 P a g e 3 P R E S I DENT S MESSAGE Happy New Year! Kali Xronia! The start of the new year signifies the opportunity to start fresh. Now we can put the difficult year of 2018 behind us and look at 2019 as a new beginning with a brighter Light. And I really mean a brighter Light! Thanks to your contributions to the Centennial Fund, we were able to refurbish our three original chandeliers in the church and all the decorative lamps on the iconostasis. You may have also noticed the new chandelier lighting in our main floor social hall and back entrance. This is just the start as we look to complete the reconstruction of our upper and lower social halls. Please walk with care through the partially completed construction zones until new floor carpeting and tiling have been installed. Please be aware that the lower level bathrooms are now accessible for your convenience. We anticipate our reconstruction project to be fully completed by mid February. Phase Two of the Iconography Project is very close to being fully funded! Look to page 11 for details. At this time we can only imagine what the completed project would look like. That means we should all look to our hearts and donate what we can towards the completion of the Iconography Project. If we reach our funding goal very soon, we should be able to look up and marvel at the full dome of icons by the end of What a legacy we will leave to parishioners for years to come. December was such a busy and festive month. Every parishioner was able to celebrate the holiday season with much joy. The well done annual Sunday School Christmas pageant, the surprise St. Nicholas visit and the beautiful holiday choir concert were able to get us all in the Christmas spirit. The cookie drive and food pantry collection were both a tremendous success in which we were able to provide meals to those less fortunate. Finally, a huge thank you to all of those who selected, delivered and decorated the Christmas trees that graced our church. Mark your calendars for Godparent s Sunday on February 3. All Godparents and Godchildren should prepare to come to Church and receive Holy Communion together. See page 5 for details. With this being my last President s message, I would like to say that it has been a great honor and privilege to serve on the parish council. Thank you for all your support. The Parish Council wishes everyone a prosperous and healthy New Year! Yours in Christ, Peter Lemoniades

We thank you for your Stewardship pledges and your donations to St. Sophia s. We also thank you for all the time and talent that you commit to our community. While we tend to focus on pledges, we need to be clear that Stewardship is more than your pledge. A steward also freely gives his or her time and talent to the many activities that the church sponsors. St. Sophia s is blessed to have so many who do. As we begin the new year we look forward to working together to improve our stewardship effort. We look forward to carefully listening to your ideas on how, together, we can do this. The first step in listening to our parishioners will be to send out the Community Survey. Please take it seriously. Identifying problematic issues is fine, but offering solutions is even better. Proposed solutions are the springboard to constructive conversations. Please be informed that the survey was assembled in late summer, but because of the building reconstruction and Father David s illness, we decided to postpone it s release until this month. In order to avoid incurring additional printing costs, we have chosen to send those preassembled packets with inaccurate dates. Please ignore those printed dates when you receive the survey in early January. Also please return it by the deadline date of February 14th. Wishing a blessed 2019 to all. The Stewardship Committee

We can all use our talents in response to God's love by serving God on the Choir, Sunday School Program, Philoptochos, GOYA and Parish Council - or by participating in the other ministries of our Church.

10 P a g e 10 Happy and Healthy New Year to everyone. Thank you to all the parishioners who bought presents and food for the Christmas distribution at the Jamesville Ecumenical Food Pantry. Your gifts were greatly appreciated. In January we will restart our monthly donation drive for the pantry. Your help is needed all year and very much appreciated by the families using the pantry. This month there will be a sign up table after church for Philoptochos. You can pay your dues ($25 per year) if you are already a member. We welcome all the ladies of the parish to become active members of Philoptochos. We need your ideas and your energy so please stop by and enjoy the fellowship! We are establishing a distribution list for either text / for members of Philoptochos. We hope this will allow us to send reminders of meetings and keep members informed of important events in the community and communications from the National and Metropolis chapters. Please make sure that your information is provided on the sign up sheet so you are not left off the list. Vasilopita will be available on January 6 and the proceeds will be sent to St Basil s Academy. We are planning a raffle for Valentines Day. A basket of gift certificates will be raffled. It is wonderful to see the progress in opening the closed off areas of the church. We are ever hopeful that we will be able to hold our Easter bake sale this Spring. I am still looking for parishioners to step up and chair coffee hour for a month. February, March, April and May are still available. Yours in Christ Maria Allis President
