2 G E N E R A L R U L E S All liturgical servers should: remember that they participate in the mystery and lead others to it prepare themselves for their functions by praying, reflecting upon their actions, taking part in the rehearsal of the liturgy team prepare all needed things before the celebration and after it bring everything back to the sacristy (or leave it in a proper place in the sanctuary)

3 THE MITER AND CROZIER ARE THE EPISCOPAL INSIGNIA. Miter a high liturgical headdress worn by bishops, abbots and also (with Pope s consent) cardinals who are not bishops. Crozier (Latin pastoral staff ) a long ornamental staff with a curved top (volute) used as the insignia by bishops and abbots. The bishop is allowed to use it only within his diocese s territory, and the archbishop within the archdiocese s territory. In other cases, they must get the local diocesan s permission. At the moments during the liturgy in which the bishop does not use the miter and crozier, the miter bearer and the crozier bearer hold them having their hands covered by vimpae (veils). The miter and crozier are handed to and taken from the bishop by his chaplain, deacon or the master of ceremonies. It should be settled with the bishop before the celebration at which moments he will need the miter and crozier.

4 Using the miter and crozier at the Mass presided by the bishop part 1 Entrance Procession and Introductory Rites In the sacristy the bishop receives the miter from one of the deacons. After putting the incense and making the sign of the cross, the bishop receives the crozier. On arrival at the sanctuary, before revering the altar (and before kissing the altar) he hands over the crozier and miter. Liturgy of the Word After the Collect, when the bishop takes his sit, he may receive the miter. After putting the incense and blessing, the bishop stands up and hand over the miter. After making the triple sign of the cross before the Gospel, the bishop receives the crozier.

5 Using the miter and crozier at the Mass presided by the bishop part 2 Liturgy of the Eucharist The bishop gives the homily wearing the miter and holding the crozier. After the homily, if there is no other rite written in the Pontifical or the Roman Ritual the bishop hands over the miter and crozier. After the Universal Prayer, the bishop takes his sit and puts on the miter. If the bishop receives the gifts in other place than the cathedra, he goes there wearing the miter. On the arrival at the altar, he removes the miter. After the prayer over the gifts, the deacon removes the skullcap and hands it to the server. When the bishop returns to the chair after Communion, he receives the skullcap.

6 Using the miter and crozier at the Mass presided by the bishop part 3 Concluding Rite After the Prayer after Communion (and after the announcements - if provided), the bishop receives the miter and greets the people saying: The Lord be with you. After the people s respond, the deacon may address the faithful in the following (or similar) words: Bow your heads for God s blessing, then the bishop addresses the faithful using the formula from the Missal, the Pontifical or the Roman Ritual. After the people s response: Amen and before the words: May almighty God bless you, the bishop receives the crozier. In the sacristy, after revering the cross and bishop s salutation, the miter and crozier should be taken from the bishop.

7 If the bishop is present at the Mass, but does not preside In the sacristy the bishop receives the miter and crozier. On arrival at the altar, before the act of reverence (bowing or genuflecting), the bishop hands over the miter and crozier. During the Liturgy of the Word the same rules mentioned above are applied. After the Universal Prayer, the bishop sits and receives the miter, and, if he receives the gifts, he does or does not wear the miter. During the incensations (if provided), the bishop is incensed after the priest celebrant having the miter removed, he stands up for the incensation. Before the final blessing, the bishop receives the miter and crozier.

8 PROCESSION ORDER AND TAKING SEATS BY THE SERVERS The next few pages show schemes of processions orders and taking seats by the servers (there is also a separate presentation containing the following schemes). The schemes present general situations places may differ depending on the number of the faithful and concelebrants. However, this general rule should be observed each server takes his seat near the place of his function. All schemes provide for places for MB and CrB they apply to celebrations presided by the bishop.

Grant me the grace of serving as the miter bearer / the crozier bearer worthily, and grant all the faithful gathered at the liturgy the gift of rejoicing at the common celebration with the bishop, who is the successor of the Apostles. Let us, gathered around the shepherds of the Church, have one heart and one spirit. Thank You, Holy Spirit, for calling me to serve as the miter bearer / the crozier bearer at the sacred liturgy of the Church. Let me take care of my bishop and give him support by my prayer and offering.

16 CORPORATE PRAYERS OF ALL SERVERS B E F O R E A N D A F T E R T H E L I T U R G Y The priest celebrant leads prayers of the liturgy team serving within the sanctuary in the sacristy. I am about to approach the altar of the Lord, approach God who cheers my youth. I begin the sacred ministry and I want to fulfill it well. Please, Lord Jesus, grant me the grace of focusing my thoughts on You, my eyes on the altar, and let my heart be committed only to You. Amen. O God, whose kindness called me to serve You, as I am now sanctified by participation in Your mysteries, please, let me walk only on the path of salvation, today and all my life, through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
