SAINT BASIL the GREAT PARISH 202 HARCOURT STREET, WINNIPEG, MB R3J 3H3 Parish Office: Parish Hall: Parish Priest: Rt. Rev Canon Walter Klimchuk SUNDAY DIVINE LITURGY 10:00 a.m. (Rosary precedes each Liturgy by one half hour) God Bless Those Who Serve Our Lord FROM FATHER WALTER The theme for this Sunday involves around those individuals who are truly great those who serve. The greatest example of such humble service was Jesus. Once when no one else was willing to wash the disciples' feet, as was the custom, Jesus removed His outer robe, took the basin of water and towel, knelt down and washed their feet. After performing the task of the slave by washing their feet, He said to them: "Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Lord and Teacher; and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you." (John 13:12-15). The word "servant" today is an unpopular word. Few people wish to serve. Most people want "to lord it over others": their goal in life is to get to be "top man on the totem pole" even if they have to step on others to get there. Christianity on the other hand, is love militant. It is love in action. It is love going out to serve. It is love sacrificing itself. It is love that is deeply rooted in the love of Christ who came "not to be served but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many." WEEKDAY SERVICES 8:30 a.m. Rosary followed by Liturgy CONFESSIONS Before Divine Liturgies BAPTISIMS By appointment FUNERALS By arrangement MARRIAGES By appointment at least three months in advance WEBSITE: PARISH OFFICE ADDRESS: parish@saintbasilwpg.ca BULLETIN SUBMISSIONS: bulletin@saintbasilwpg.ca Christianity is not meant to be an isolated faith or just a matter of our individual relationship with God. As Christians, we are God's covenant people. Being a

church means being members of a community a family. And that means we are called to pray for one another, take care of the sick, look after the poor, convert the misguided, and extend mercy. In my personal spiritual journey I have come to realize that God wants to expand our vision of his people to include the poor and homeless, people in distant lands and cultures, and even those who have hurt us. When we look out at the chu rch and the world from God's vantage point, we are better disposed to reach out and help correct injustice wherever we can. "Too many words," Blessed Mother Teresa once said. "Let them just see what we do." Saint Bridget Saint Bridget of Sweden (c ), also known as Birgitta of Sweden, is one of the few Catholic saints of Scandinavia and one of six patron saints of Europe. Sometimes referred to as the "Mystic of the North Bridget was born into a wealthy, landowning family in the earliest years of the fourteenth century. Her father, Birger Persson, came from the prominent Finsta family, and served as both governor and lagman ("law-speaker"), or provincial judge, in the province of Uppland, Situated north of Stockholm on the Baltic Sea coast Uppland had a rich history in Swedish lore even in Bridget's day, for its main city of Uppsala was the site of a legendary pagan temple destroyed in some of Sweden's final pagan-christian battles in the 1080s. During that century, Swedes had converted from their pagan belief system to Christianity, but Uppland was the final holdout for the Norse god worshippers. Bridget's mother was Ingeborg Bengtsdotter, who came from a prominent family with links to the house of Bjälbo. Many from this line would serve as the Swedish king's jarl, or second in command, during Bridget's lifetime. Another ancestor of hers was Birger Magnusson of Bjälbo, the founder of the city of Stockholm. Both Bridget's parents were devoutly religious, and she adopted their pious ways quite early in her own life. Her father went to confession every Friday and made long and arduous pilgrimages as far away as the Holy Land. Bridget was greatly devoted to the passion of Jesus. At the age of seven she began to experience mystical revelations; in one vision, she claimed, the Virgin Mary came to her and placed a crown on her head. It seems that as a young child, Birgitta had a very vivid dreamvision of The Man of Sorrows. She had a vision of Jesus on the cross wounded and bleeding and heard Him say, Look at me, my daughter. Birgitta asked Him who had done that to Him. His answer: All those who despise me and refuse my love for them. The memory of this dream never left Birgitta and may have even left an indelible mark on her sub-conscious. In one of her later published Revelations the Lord said to her: O my friends, I love my

sheep so tenderly that were it possible I would die many other times for each one of them that same death I suffered for the redemption of all. Bridget s mother died, leaving Bridget, ten years old, Katharine, nine and a newborn baby boy, Israel. The children were sent to their maternal aunt for further education and care. As she entered her teens Bridget hoped to enter a religious order. This was one of two stark choices for wellborn women of her time: the first option, marriage, meant a woman would likely spent the next 30 or so years either pregnant or nursing a child if she survived all the deliveries, that is; for childbirth had an extremely high risk of death before the era of modern medicine. Or a woman could choose to enter a religious order, which necessitated a vow of chastity and cloistering behind the walls of a nunnery for life. But many religious communities in the medieval era were also oases of scholarship, even ones exclusively for women. Bridget's father opposed the idea of her entering a convent, and in 1316, when she was 13, she was wed to Ulf Gudmarsson, who was five years her senior and hailed from a similarly well-connected aristocratic family. Gudmarsson was lord of the province of Närke, and came into possession of a castle at Ulvâsa in Östergötland, where Bridget would spend much of her adult life. Fortunately, her new husband was similarly devout in his faith, and it was a solid match that produced eight children. Known as a devoted mother to four sons and four daughters, she refused to use physical discipline on them. Outside the castle, she became known for her works of charity, particularly toward Östergötland's unwed mothers and their children. She also founded a hospital. The saintly life and great charity of Bridget soon made her name known far and wide. She continued to have visions during this time, a clear message for those who doubt that married life and divine favour can go hand in hand. In fact, one of the things St. Bridget is known for is balancing her domestic life with her spiritual life, children in tow. Word of Bridget's piety and charitable works spread throughout Sweden, and she befriended prominent theologians and clerics. In this era, Swedes adhered to the same form of Christianity practiced in the rest of Western Europe, before the Reformation caused the split that resulted in separate Roman Catholic and Protestant creeds. When the King of Sweden, Magnus Eriksson married Blanche of Namur, he asked his kinswoman, Bridget to come and be Lady-in Waiting and to teach the young queen the language and customs of her new country. In the early 1340s Bridget and her husband made a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. This was a lengthy journey by sea and over land, and made by devout Christians with the financial resources that allowed them to leave home for such a long period of time. Located in Galicia in northwest Spain, Santiago de Compostela was a famous medieval pilgrimage destination bearing a name that in translation means "St. James in the Field of the

Star." Legend asserted that James, one of Christ's twelve apostles, had preached there. He was known to have died a martyr's death in Jerusalem in 44 AD, but the legend held that his bones were buried in Spain some years later. Nearly 700 years after his death, a star appeared in the sky that showed Spain's Christians the resting place of James's bones, and a church was erected on the spot in 868. It was sacked by the Muslim Moors who ruled over much of Spain a century later, but a more elaborate cathedral was built when religious tensions subsided, and the church became one of Europe's first major pilgrimage sites. On the return journey Ulf became dangerously ill in Arras. Bridget feared for his death and sat all night by his bed praying, and then a bishop appeared to her, promised that Ulf would recover and God had great things for her to do. He told her that he was Denis, Patron of France. Ulf recovered and was able to continue his work as Lagman in the province of Närke until early in the year 1344, when he was again very ill so Bridget took him to the monks at Alvastra where he died and was buried. Bridget remained in a little house near the abbey and she spent long hours in prayer by Ulf s grave. She said that she loved him like my own body. She arranged her affairs among her children and various charities and prayed for guidance. St. Bridget had the gift of prophecy and worked many marvellous cures. By now in her early 40s she lived an ascetic life, eating very little, sleeping short hours, and praying continually. She followed a strict rule and practiced every possible kind of charitable work, even reducing herself to begging. The visions she had from her early childhood now became more frequent and definite. In obedience to them, she visited many rulers and important people in the Church. She explained humbly what God expected of them. She received constant inspirations which were either taken down by her chaplain and put into Latin, thus becoming known as her 'Revelations,' or took the form of letters to the succeeding popes, cardinals, and secular rulers of the day, telling them of their wickedness and how to reform their lives. In receiving these charisms, Bridget was aware that she had been given a gift of special love on the Lord's part: My Daughter we read in the First Book of Revelations I have chosen you for myself, love me with all your heart... more than all that exists in the world (c. 1). Bridget, moreover, knew well and was firmly convinced that every charism is destined to build up the Church. For this very reason many of her revelations were addressed in the form of admonishments, even severe ones, to the believers of her time, including the Religious and Political Authorities, that they might live a consistent Christian life; but she always reprimanded them with an attitude of respect and of full fidelity to the Magisterium of the Church and in particular to the Successor of the Apostle Peter. Both in Sweden and in Rome she was either hated violently or loved as a saint. 'Strong and full of courage,' she was 'homely and kind and had a laughing face.' St. Bridget s Revelations have a varied content and style. At times the revelations are presented in the form of dialogues between the divine Persons, the Virgin, the Saints and even demons; they are dialogues in which

Bridget takes part. At other times, a specific vision is described; and in yet others what the Virgin Mary reveals to her concerning the life and mysteries of the Son. As mentioned earlier, it was not uncommon for wealthy women to join a religious order when they became widows, but Bridget took this a step further and founded her own order, probably in the year She was 41 years old and in the abbey at Alvastra when God called her be My Bride and My canal. He gave her the task of founding a new religious order, mainly for women. He said that the other orders had fallen into decay and this new order would be a vineyard whose wine would revivify the Church. He showed her how her abbey church was to be built, gave directions concerning the clothing and prayers of the nuns, 60 in all, who needed priests as chaplains, 13 priests, 4 deacons and 8 lay brothers. These two communities were to be ruled by an abbess, who was to represent the Blessed Virgin Mary together with the Apostles in the Upper Room in Jerusalem. It was never a double order but an order primarily for women with permanent chaplains, ruled by an abbess. The brothers had as their head, not a prior but a Confessor General who was responsible for the spiritual business of both convents. Originally known as the Order of St. Saviour but later called the Brigittines, the religious community was open to both monks and nuns. King Magnus Eriksson donated a little palace and much land to the new monastery. A religious order needed official Church approval, however, and so after writing its Rule (bylaws that governed its daily life and spiritual focus), she traveled to Rome to seek papal confirmation for it. Bridget left Sweden at the end of 1349 never to return. Bridget braved a plague-stricken Europe to make the pilgrimage to Rome accompanied by her daughter Catherine and a small party of priests and disciples. Pope Urban V ( ) approved the Brigittine Rule in August of 1370 Christ appeared to her and asked her to stay in Rome until she got the pope to return from France to Rome so she spent some of these years attempting to reconcile the division that had resulted earlier that century when the French city of Avignon was designated the papal residence. She appealed to Urban V to return the Holy See back to Rome, Christianity's historical epicenter. That did not take place until 1377, four years after her death. For the rest of her life she saw visions concerning the reform of the Church, messages to kings and popes and many other persons in high places, directing them to work for the Church. She predicted an eventual Vatican State, foretelling almost the exact boundaries delineated by Mussolini for Vatican City in She accomplished the greatest good in Rome, however by her pious and charitable life, and her earnest admonitions to others to adopt a better life, following out the excellent precedents she had set in her native land. Her years in Rome were far from happy, being hounded by debts and by opposition to her work against Church abuses. Although she had longed to become a nun, she never even saw the monastery in Vadstena. In fact, nothing she set out to do was ever realised. She

never saw the pope return to Rome permanently, she never managed to make peace between France and England, she never saw any nun in the habit that Christ had shown her. Shortly before she died, the saint went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. At the shrines there, she had visions of what Jesus had said and done in each place. She never returned to Sweden but died, a worn out old lady far from home in July Bridget died in Rome on July 23, She was buried temporarily in the Church of San Lorenzo in Panisperna in Rome but in 1374 her children, Birger and Karin, took her body back to her homeland, to the Monastery of Vadstena, the headquarters of the Religious Order St Bridget had founded. The order immediately experienced a considerable expansion. Several miracles were attributed to their journey north some who touched her coffin, it was said, had been suddenly healed of their illness or disability. Pope Boniface IX solemnly canonized her as St. Bridget of Sweden on October 7, Her feast day is July 23. In October 1, 1999 Pope John Paul II named her as a patron saint of Europe Katarina, Bridget's daughter, also became one of the few Scandinavian-born saints, known as St. Catherine of Sweden (c ). This daughter returned to the Vadstena monastery and took over the order, which flourished both there and elsewhere in Europe over the next two centuries. Bridget's granddaughter, Ingeborg Knutsdotter, served as the Brigittines' abbess from 1385 to 1403; when she died in 1412 she was the last of Bridget's descendants. The family line ended because so many of her descendants had taken religious vows and never married. The Brigittine s cultivate a special devotion to Our Lady and to the Passions of Christ, stemming naturally from the childhood visions and the whole life of their foundress. In the years following Bridget's death, her order established houses across Sweden and Norway and even as far away as Belarus. Before England's Reformation, the Brigittine outpost in Middlesex, called Syon Abbey, had been founded by King Henry V ( ) and grew into a famous center of scholarship over the next century, particularly renowned for one of the most impressive libraries in the British Isles. Syon Abbey was sacked in 1539 during the violence that accompanied the English monarchy's break with Rome. Many of the Brigittine monasteries in Scandinavia were also destroyed during the Protestant Reformation when it spread there later in the sixteenth century. In Catholic Hapsburg Austria, however, a chapel was built in Vienna to honor St. Bridget in 1651; the surrounding municipal district around this is officially known as Brigittenau. Her religious order died out entirely during the Reformation, but was revived in 1940 by a Swedish woman, Elisabeth Hesselblad, who was a convert to Roman Catholicism. Its center remains in Vadstena, but the order is restricted to women. The contemporary Brigittine convents function as guesthouses, fulfilling a new mission to promote Christianity through hospitality as well as charitable works. In Rome their convent is

housed at the Piazza Farnese, also known as the Casa di Santa Brigida. The residence, near Campo de' Fiori, is where Bridget lived during most of her years in Rome. Brigittine sisters also have missions in India, Estonia, the Middle East, and even Darien, Connecticut. The order spread swiftly throughout Europe with monasteries from Scandinavia right through Europe down to Italy. In modern times is has expanded into five different, juridically independant branches; Spain 1629, Rome 1911, U.S.A. 1970, Mexico at the change of the century. None of these foundations have brothers (except U.S.A. which has one male convent). Traditional Roman Catholic iconography of Bridget includes the pen, the ink bottle, and her revelations. She was also portrayed inside Florence's famed Santa Maria Novella church by the artist Andrea da Firenze in a fresco commissioned for its Spanish Chapel by Italian nobles she had befriended. Titled Via Veritatis, the fresco depicts her as an older woman alongside her daughter, Katarina, who is young but dressed in the humble clothes of a religious pilgrim. Both are placed near the Pope and Emperor in a painting that commemorates the historic 1368 meeting that restored the Holy See to Rome a meeting that Bridget had prophesied a few years earlier. From St. Bridget we can learn something very important as we struggle with our personal ailments, tough situations, and failures. That is this. Success in overcoming ailments (depression included), tough situations (including wayward children she apparently had them), having visions, and failures are not the key to becoming a Saint. Keeping faith and heeding the voice of God in our deepest hearts is the only requirement. THE PRAYERS OF SAINT BRIDGET Saint Bridget prayed for a long time to know how many blows Jesus Christ suffered during His terrible Passion. Rewarding her patience, one day He appeared to her and said, "I received 5475 blows upon My Body. If you wish to honor them in some way, recite fifteen Our Fathers and fifteen Hail Marys with the following Prayers, which I Myself shall teach you, for an entire year. When the year is finished, you will have honored each of My Wounds."

The 15 Prayers: First Prayer: O Jesus Christ! Eternal Sweetness to those who love Thee, joy surpassing all joy and all desire, Salvation and Hope of all sinners, Who hast proved that Thou hast no greater desire than to be among men, even assuming human nature at the fullness of time for the love of men, recall all the sufferings Thou has endured from the instant of Thy conception, and especially during Thy Passion, as it was decreed and ordained from all eternity in the Divine Plan. Remember, O Lord, that during the Last Supper with Thy disciples, having washed their feet, Thou gavest them Thy Most Precious Body and Blood, and while at the same time Thou didst sweetly console them, Thou didst foretell them Thy coming Passion. Remember all the fear, anguish and pain that Thou didst suffer in Thy delicate Body before the torment of the Crucifixion, when, after having prayed three times, bathed in a sweat of blood, Thou wast betrayed by Judas, Thy disciple, arrested by the people of a nation Thou hadst chosen and elevated, accused by false witnesses, unjustly judged by three judges during the flower of Thy youth and during the solemn Paschal season. Remember that Thou wast despoiled of Thy garments and clothed in those of derision; that Thy Face and Eyes were veiled, that Thou wast buffeted, crowned with thorns, a reed placed in Thy Hands, that Thou was crushed with blows and overwhelmed with affronts and outrages. In memory of all these pains and sufferings which Thou didst endure before Thy Passion on the Cross, grant me before my death true contrition, a sincere and entire confession, worthy satisfaction and the remission of all my sins. Amen. 2nd Prayer: O Jesus! True liberty of angels, Paradise of delights, remember the horror and sadness which Thou didst endure when Thy enemies, like furious lions, surrounded Thee, and by thousands of insults, spits, blows, lacerations and other unheard of cruelties, tormented Thee at will. In consideration of these torments and insulting words, I beseech Thee, O My Saviour, to deliver me from all my enemies, visible and invisible, and to bring me, under Thy protection, to the perfection of eternal salvation. Amen.

3rd Prayer: O Jesus! Creator of Heaven and earth Whom nothing can encompass or limit, Thou Who dost enfold and hold all under Thy Loving Power, remember the very bitter pain Thou didst suffer when the Jews nailed Thy Sacred Hands and Feet to the Cross by blow after blow with big blunt nails, and not finding Thee in a pitiable enough state to satisfy their rage, they enlarged Thy Wounds, and added pain to pain, and with indescribable cruelty stretched Thy Body on the Cross, pulled Thee from all sides, thus dislocating Thy Limbs. I beg of Thee, O Jesus, by the memory of this most Loving suffering of the Cross, to grant me the grace to fear Thee and to love Thee. Amen. 4th Prayer: O Jesus! Heavenly Physician, raised aloft on the Cross to heal our wounds with Thine, remember the bruises which Thou didst suffer and the weakness of all Thy Members which were distended to such a degree that never was there pain like unto Thine. From the Crown of Thy Head to the Soles of Thy Feet there was not one spot on Thy Body that was not in torment, and yet, forgetting all Thy sufferings, Thou didst not cease to pray to Thy Heavenly Father for Thy enemies, saying: "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do." Through this great Mercy, and in memory of this suffering, grant that the remembrance of Thy Most Bitter Passion may effect in us a perfect contrition and the remission of all our sins. Amen. 5th Prayer: O Jesus! Mirror of Eternal Splendor, remember the sadness which Thou experienced, when contemplating in the light of Thy Divinity the predestination of those who would be saved by the merits of Thy Sacred Passion, Thou didst see at the same time, the great multitude of reprobates who would be damned for their sins, and Thou didst complain bitterly of those hopelessly lost and unfortunate sinners.

Through this abyss of compassion and pity, and especially through the goodness which Thou displayed to the good thief when Thou saidst to him: "This day, thou shalt be with Me in Paradise," I beg of Thee, O Sweet Jesus, that at the hour of my death, Thou wilt show me mercy. Amen. 6th Prayer: O Jesus! Beloved and most desirable King, remember the grief Thou didst suffer, when naked and like a common criminal, Thou was fastened and raised on the Cross, when all Thy relatives and friends abandoned Thee, except Thy Beloved Mother, who remained close to Thee during Thy agony and whom Thou didst entrust to Thy faithful disciple when Thou saidst to Mary: "Woman, behold thy son!" and to St. John: "Son, behold thy Mother!" I beg of Thee, O My Saviour, by the sword of sorrow which pierced the soul of Thy holy Mother, to have compassion on me in all my affliction and tribulations, both corporal and spiritual, and to assist me in all my trials, and especially at the hour of my death. Amen. 7th Prayer: O Jesus! Inexhaustible Fountain of compassion, Who by a profound gesture of Love, said from the Cross: "I thirst!" suffered from the thirst for the salvation of the human race. I beg of Thee, O My Saviour, to inflame in our hearts the desire to tend toward perfection in all our acts; and to extinguish in us the concupiscence (pleasure seeking) of the flesh and the ardor of worldly desires. Amen. 8th Prayer: O Jesus! Sweetness of hearts, delight of the spirit, by the bitterness of the vinegar and gall which Thou didst taste on the Cross for Love of us, grant us the grace to receive worthily Thy Precious Body and Blood during our life and at the hour of our death, that They may serve as a remedy and consolation for our souls. Amen.

9th Prayer: O Jesus! Royal virtue, joy of the mind, recall the pain Thou didst endure when, plunged in an ocean of bitterness at the approach of death, insulted, outraged by the Jews, Thou didst cry out in a loud voice that Thou was abandoned by Thy Father, saying: "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" Through this anguish, I beg of Thee, O My Saviour, not to abandon me in the terrors and pains of my death. Amen. 10th Prayer: O Jesus! Who art the beginning and the end of all things, life, and virtue, remember that for our sakes Thou was plunged in an abyss of suffering from the soles of Thy Feet to the Crown of Thy Head. In consideration of the enormity of Thy Wounds, teach me to keep, through pure love, Thy commandments, whose way is wide and easy for those who love Thee. Amen. 11th Prayer: O Jesus! Deep abyss of mercy, I beg of Thee, in memory of Thy Wounds which penetrated to the very marrow of Thy Bones and to the depth of Thy Being, to draw me, a miserable sinner, overwhelmed by my offenses, away from sin and to hide me from Thy Face justly irritated against me, hide me in Thy Wounds, until Thy anger and just indignation shall have passed away. Amen. 12th Prayer: O Jesus! Mirror of Truth, symbol of unity, link of charity, remember the multitude of wounds with which Thou was covered from Head to Foot, torn and reddened by the spilling of Thy Adorable Blood. O Great and Universal Pain which Thou didst suffer in Thy virginal Flesh for love of us! Sweetest Jesus! What is there that Thou couldst have done for us which Thou hast not done! May the fruit of Thy sufferings be renewed in my soul by the faithful remembrance of Thy Passion, and may

Thy Love increase in my heart each day, until I see Thee in eternity, Thou Who art the treasury of every real good and every joy, which I beg Thee to grant me, O Sweetest Jesus, in Heaven. Amen. 13th Prayer: O Jesus! Strong Lion, Immortal and Invincible King, remember the pain which Thou didst endure when all Thy strength, both moral and physical, was entirely exhausted, Thou didst bow Thy Head, saying: "It is consummated!" Through this anguish and grief, I beg of Thee, Lord Jesus, to have mercy on me at the hour of my death when my mind will be greatly troubled and my soul will be in anguish. Amen. 14th Prayer: O Jesus! Only Son of the Father, Splendor and Figure of His Substance, remember the simple and humble recommendation Thou didst make of Thy Soul to Thy Eternal Father, saying: "Father, into Thy Hands I commend My Spirit!" And with Thy Body all torn, and Thy Heart broken, and the bowels of Thy Mercy opened to redeem us, Thou didst expire. By this Precious Death, I beg of Thee, O King of Saints, comfort me and help me to resist the devil, the flesh and the world, so that being dead to the world I may live for Thee alone. I beg of Thee at the hour of my death to receive me, a pilgrim and an exile returning to Thee. Amen. 15th Prayer: O Jesus! True and Fruitful Vine! Remember the abundant outpouring of Blood which Thou didst so generously shed from Thy Sacred Body as juice from grapes in a wine press. From Thy Side, pierced with a lance by a soldier, Blood and water issued forth until there was not left in Thy Body a single drop, and finally, like a bundle of myrrh lifted to the top of the Cross, Thy delicate Flesh was destroyed, the very Substance of Thy Body withered, and the Marrow of Thy Bones dried up. Through this bitter Passion and through the outpouring of Thy Precious Blood, I beg of Thee, O Sweet Jesus, to receive my soul when I am in my death agony. Amen.

Conclusion: O Sweet Jesus! Pierce my heart so that my tears of penitence and love will be my bread day and night; may I be converted entirely to Thee, may my heart be Thy perpetual habitation, may my conversation be pleasing to Thee, and may the end of my life be so praiseworthy that I may merit Heaven and there with Thy saints, praise Thee forever. Amen. The Seven Prayers of St. Bridget Our Lord Made Five Promises to St. Bridget Our Lord made these Five Promises to anyone who recited/prayed these prayers daily for twelve entire years. If the soul praying these prayers dies before the entire twelve years of prayers have been completed, the Lord will accept them as having been prayed in their entirety, because the intention of the soul was to complete them as directed. If a day or a few days are missed due to a valid reason, they can be made up for later, at the soul's earliest opportunity. 1. The soul who prays them will suffer no Purgatory. 2. The soul who prays them will be accepted among the Martyrs as though he had spilled his blood for his faith. 3. The soul who prays them can choose three others whom Jesus will then keep in a state of grace sufficient to become holy. 4. No one in the four successive generations of the soul who prays them will be lost. 5. The soul who prays them will be made conscious of his death one month in advance. Opening Prayer - O Jesus, now I wish to pray the Lord's Prayer seven times in unity with the love with which You sanctified this prayer in Your Heart. Take it from my lips into Your Divine Heart. Improve and complete it so much that it brings as much honor and joy to the Trinity as You granted it on earth with this prayer. May these pour upon Your Holy Humanity in Glorification to Your Painful Wounds and the Precious Blood that You spilled from them.

First Prayer The Circumcision: Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary Eternal Father, through Mary's unblemished hands and the Divine Heart of Jesus, I offer You the first wounds, the first pains, and the first Bloodshed as atonement for my and all of humanity's sins of youth, as protection against the first mortal sin, especially among my relatives. Second Prayer The Suffering on the Mount of Olives: Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary Eternal Father, through Mary's unblemished hands and the Divine Heart of Jesus, I offer You the terrifying suffering of Jesus' Heart on the Mount of Olives and every drop of His Bloody Sweat as atonement for my and all of humanity's sins of the heart, as protection against such sins and for the spreading of Divine and brotherly Love. Third Prayer The Flogging: Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary Eternal Father, through Mary's unblemished hands and the Divine Heart of Jesus, I offer You the many thousands of Wounds, the gruesome Pains, and the Precious Blood of the Flogging as atonement for my and all of humanity's sins of the Flesh, as protection against such sins and the preservation of innocence, especially among my relatives. Fourth Prayer The Crowning of Thorns: Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary Eternal Father, through Mary's unblemished hands and the Divine Heart of Jesus, I offer You the Wounds, the Pains, and the Precious Blood of Jesus' Holy Head from the Crowning with Thorns as atonement for my and all of humanity's sins of the Spirit, as protection against such sins and the spreading of Christ's kingdom here on earth.

Fifth Prayer The Carrying of the Cross: Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary Eternal Father, through Mary's unblemished hands and the Divine Heart of Jesus, I offer You the Sufferings on the way of the Cross, especially His Holy Wound on His Shoulder and its Precious Blood as atonement for my and all of humanity's rebellion against the Cross, every grumbling against Your Holy Arrangements and all other sins of the tongue, as protection against such sins and for true love of the Cross. Sixth Prayer The Crucifixion: Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary Eternal Father, through Mary's unblemished hands and the Divine Heart of Jesus, I offer You Your Son on the Cross, His Nailing and Raising, His Wounds on the Hands and Feet and the three streams of His Precious Blood that poured forth from these for us, His extreme tortures of the Body and Soul, His precious Death and its non-bleeding Renewal in all Holy Masses on earth as atonement for all wounds against vows and regulations within the Orders, as reparation for my and all of the world's sins, for the sick and the dying, for all holy priests and laymen, for the Holy Father's intentions toward the restoration of Christian families, for the strengthening of Faith, for our country and unity among all nations in Christ and His Church, as well as for the Diaspora (a scattered population with a common origin). Seventh Prayer The Piercing of Jesus' Side: Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary Eternal Father, accept as worthy, for the needs of the Holy Church and as atonement for the sins of all Mankind, the Precious Blood and Water which poured forth from the Wound of Jesus' Divine Heart. Be gracious and merciful toward us. Blood of Christ, the last precious content of His Holy Heart, wash me of all my and others' guilt of sin! Water from the Side of Christ, wash me clean of all punishments for sin and extinguish the flames of Purgatory for me and for all the Poor Souls. Amen.

Prayer in Honor of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Mother 1. There will be peace in the person s family. 2. The person will experience enlightenment into God s mysteries. Whoever thinks of the Passion of Jesus Christ must also think of His Blessed Mother Mary. The Mother of God gave St. Bridget the private revelation that the following graces will be gained by anyone who prays seven Hail Mary s daily while meditating upon her tears and sorrows, and by anyone who spreads this devotion to others: 3. As long as their wishes are within God s Will for the salvation of souls, the person s wishes in prayer will be fulfilled. 4. The person will have eternal joy in Jesus and Mary. First Sorrow of Mary The old Simeon reveals that Jesus will be a sign of contradiction, and that Mary s heart will be pierced. Hail Mary... Second Sorrow of Mary Mary and Joseph took Jesus to safety in Egypt. Hail Mary... Third Sorrow of Mary Mary and Joseph looked for the 12-year-old Jesus who stayed behind in the Temple. Hail Mary... Fourth Sorrow of Mary Mary meets Jesus on the Way of the Cross. Hail Mary...

Fifth Sorrow of Mary Mary at Calvary watches Jesus crucifixion, death, lancing, and removal from the Cross. Hail Mary. Sixth Sorrow of Mary Mary embraces in her arms the lifeless body of Jesus. Hail Mary... Seventh Sorrow of Mary Mary endures loneliness at the burial of Jesus. Hail Mary... Prayer for the Most Neglected Souls JESUS, for the sake of the agony that you endured during your fear of death at the Garden of Gethsemane, at the Scourging, at the crowning with thorns, on the way to Calvary, at Your crucifixion and death, have mercy on the souls in Purgatory, especially on those souls who are completely forgotten. Deliver them from their bitter pains, call them finally to yourself and embrace them in Your arms in Heaven. Amen. PRAYERS TO ST. BRIDGET Faithful wife and mother, you loved to meditate on Christ's Passion which made you wonderfully patient. Like Elizabeth of Hungary, you generously cared for the poor and the sick. You also founded a monastery and became a favorite Saint through the centuries. Help us to be faithful to the vocation that God intended for us. Amen. O Lord our God, Who through Thine only-begotten Son didst reveal Heavenly secrets to blessed Bridget: grant through her loving intercession, that we, Thy servants, may rejoice with gladness at the revelation of Thine everlasting glory. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

THE TRAVELING ICON OF THE MOTHER OF POCHAIV When we speak of icons as a medium for gazing into heaven, we refer to their value as much more than ethereal-looking religious art. Instead, icons serve as a very real means for connecting us with God and His love. Icons are beautiful, but without relationship behind it, beauty alone feeds only a portion of the human soul, and ultimately patronizes the deep human need for loving connection with the Transcendent. With this in mind, we seek to view icons as points of visual and spiritual intersection with eternal things, as living prompts for our prayers, and as reminders of the very real world that exists beyond the limitations of this temporal one. Icons can seem complicated or strange at first. Take time to come present to the icon, to simply gaze, allowing both your sense of sight as well as the longings of your heart to interact with what the icon presents to you in a particular moment. Icons have a way of teaching the heart spiritual truths the mind cannot. This is part of what is meant by icons being theology in color. The Traveling Icon of the Mother of Pochaiv is for the benefit of all parish families. There is a folder at the back of the church with a picture of the icon on it. Use the sheets inside to reserve a time when you can bring the icon to your home. The icon can be picked up and dropped off in the Sacristy each Sunday. PEROGY PEELING WILL TAKE PLACE ON SUNDAY MARCH 22 ND FOLLOWING DIVINE LITURGY. PEROGY MAKING WILL TAKE PLACE TUESDAY MARCH 24 TH AS MARCH 25 TH IS THE ANNUNCIATION.

Tell me what lies on the other side..' Very quietly, the doctor said, 'I don't know..' 'You don't know? You're, a Christian man,and don't know what's on the other side?' The doctor was holding the handle of the door; On the other side came a sound of scratching and whining, And as he opened the door, a dog sprang into the room And leaped on him with an eager show of gladness. Turning to the patient, the doctor said, Did you notice my dog? He's never been in this room before. He didn't know what was inside..he knew nothing except that his master was here, And when the door opened, he sprang in without fear. I know little of what is on the other side of death, But I do know one thing...i know my Master is there and that is enough'. Thank you to Fran Chobotar for submitting the above
