1 Organized in 1886, St. Jude s Episcopal Church celebrated its first service that same year. This beautiful building, with its remarkable stained glass and appointments, was consecrated three years later in 1889 under the Episcopal oversight of the Rt. Rev. Henry Adams Neely, Second Bishop of Maine. The dark wood and quiet coolness of the building have been silent witnesses to worship for over a century, but it is prayer that has given life to our church. Many are drawn to St. Jude s because of its warmth and fellowship. We bid you welcome! You are encouraged to be mindful of your own hand washing and to be sensitive to those who may not wish to shake hands. Hand sanitizer is available as you enter the church. Please use it, especially if you think you may have a cold! Let s keep everyone safe from illness. Thank you. During Communion Extensive medical research has shown that taking a sip from the common (silver) cup which is properly wiped and rotated is the most germ-free method of receiving the wine. You are strongly encouraged to refrain from dipping your host in the wine. This method has the potential of introducing germs from your hand into the chalice. Receiving only the bread is perfectly acceptable. Beginning Thursday, August 26, Jonathan Appleyard (Rector of St. Saviour s in Bar Harbor) will be at St. John s in Southwest Harbor weekly, on Thursdays from 1 pm 4 pm. At 2 pm he invites anyone (this includes all MDI parishioners) who is interested to join in a lectionary based Bible study. 5 The Epistle (Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16) Reader A reading from a letter to the Hebrews. Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured. Let marriage be held in honor by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers. Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, "I will never leave you or forsake you."
