Michael Zaniolo, Administrator C HAPEL BIRTHDAYS & ANNIVERSARIES Birthday blessings and best wishes go out to to Mr. Thomas Burns this Friday, Dec. 28, and Fr. James O Brien, this Saturday, Dec. 29. ADVENT CREDO It is not true that creation and the human family are doomed to destruction and loss This is true: For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. It is not true that we must accept inhumanity and discrimination, hunger and poverty, death and destruction This is true: I have come that they may have life, and that abundantly. It is not true that violence and hatred should have the last word, and that war and destruction rule forever This is true: Unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder, his name shall be called wonderful councilor, mighty God, the Everlasting, the Prince of peace. It is not true that we are simply victims of the powers of evil who seek to rule the world This is true: To me is given authority in heaven and on earth, and lo I am with you, even until the end of the world. It is not true that we have to wait for those who are specially gifted, who are the prophets of the Church before we can be peacemakers This is true: I will pour out my spirit on all flesh and your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions and your old men shall have dreams. It is not true that our hopes for liberation of humankind, of justice, of human dignity of peace are not meant for this earth and for this history This is true: The hour comes, and it is now, that the true worshipers shall worship God in spirit and in truth. So let us enter Advent in hope, even hope against hope. Let us see visions of love and peace and justice. Let us affirm with humility, with joy, with faith, with courage: Jesus Christ the life of the world. From "Testimony: The Word Made Flesh" by Daniel Berrigan, S.J MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL! C hristmas, the Christian feast celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, will be observed this Tuesday, Dec. 25. Second in importance only to the annual celebration of Easter, Christmas commemorates the incarnation of the divine Word at the birth of Jesus Christ, and is a holy day of obligation for Catholics. "First mentioned in Rome in the middle of the fourth century, December 25 was a Christian replacement for the Roman celebration of Sol Invictus (Latin, the Unconquered Sun) at the winter solstice. The observance of the date spread from Rome to the East, although some churches (e.g., the Armenian) celebrate Christ's birth on January 6," according to the HarperCollins Dictionary of Religion. 2 Fourth Sunday of Advent December 23, 2012 Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Luke 1:42 MEMORIES AND DREAMS Throughout our lives, we retain the language and habits of our native region and family of origin. Should we return to our home after a long absence, we quickly revert to its familiar speech and practices. Our deep memory is reflected in old stories and words and speech patterns. This familiarity runs like an underground river and accompanies us wherever we go. Not only do we remember, we are incorporated into and made part of a greater memory. In remembering and recollecting, we are in turn gathered up and re-collected. Today we remember Mary, a small figure travelling the country roads to visit Elizabeth. All the great pronouncements and dreams of the prophets point to this time when the Lord s words to Mary would be gathered and fulfilled. The memories of her people are alive in her, and memories of her nourish our own living faith. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. The period of leisure after the harvest and a whole cluster of pagan festivals were a force for the church to reckon with. The Saturnalia, breaking out on December 17, was a time of high living and loose morals. Christians were advised by their bishops to drop out of the mayhem and do some serious fasting. A famous church council at Saragossa in Spain made a season of fasting mandatory from December 17 to December 23, exactly coinciding with the Saturnalia. The bishops at that time were perhaps less concerned with preparing for Christmas than with resisting the kind of loose living going on. Modern times have restored a bit of the Saturnalia spirit to our culture, so that a general period of partying with a vague connection to religion is now upon us. How does a Christian keep balance? The practice of charity by remembering the poor in our gift-giving, of hospitality in finding a place at our holiday tables for the poor and lonely, and of daily prayer in the home and at church are great helps. Although Advent is not a penitential season like Lent, it is a time for making room in our lives for what matters most. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. This Week in the Life of the Church Being a compendium of feast days and notable events in Church history. Sunday, December 23, 2012 We Remember: ST. JOHN OF KANTY (or Cantius) ( ). John Cantius was named after his birthplace, the city of Kanty in Poland. His home was near Oswiecin, known to readers of today as Auschwitz, site of a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. John graduated from the University of Cracow and was appointed to the chair of theology. For some time, he took charge of a parish, but returned to biblical teaching, which he carried on until his death. He was canonized in (B,D) Christmas Eve Monday, December 24, 2012 We Remember: Saints THARSILLA and EMILIANA (c. 550) were aunts of Pope Gregory the Great. Tharsilla, the eldest, her sisters Emiliana and Gordiana lived in the home of Gordian - father of Gregory the Great. The sisters Tharsilla and Emiliana lived an ascetic life of prayer but later married. St. Gregory tells us that Tharsilla was visited one night by a vision of her greatgrandfather, Pope Felix III, who showed a place prepared for her in heaven and said, "Come; I will receive you into the habitation of light." She died on the vigil of Christmas. Emiliana also received a heavenly call from her sister and died several days later. (D) Christmas Day, December 25, 2008 We Remember: Today we commemorate the birth of OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST (Lk. 2:1-20). This event was originally commemorated in the East on the feast of Epiphany or Theophany. The Christmas feast itself originated in the West; by 354 it was certainly kept on Dec. 25. This date may have been set for the observance to offset pagan ceremonies held at about the same time to commemorate the birth of the sun at the winter solstice. There are texts for three Christmas Masses: at midnight, dawn, and during the day. "Over the centuries, many customs, not all of them universally observed, became attached to the day. The erection of the Christmas crib (creche) began with St. Francis of Assisi, who made the first one...in Use of Christmas greenery (trees, wreaths, etc.) was an adaptation of pre-christian customs that began in Germanic countries but spread to England in the 19th century through the influence of Queen Victoria's husband, who was German. Santa Claus (St. Nicholas), Father Christmas, and Father Frost are all adaptations of European folk customs celebrated in the winter season. Christmas carols began as a wider custom of singing popular religious songs (as opposed to liturgical hymns) on seasonal feasts but, over the years, increasingly became identified with this season. (A) December 26, 2008 We Remember: An account of the death of ST. STEPHEN, first Christian martyr, is found in the Acts of the Apostles (7:55-60). A deacon in the early church, Stephen had been assigned by the apostles to distribute food to the poor. He worked great signs and wonders among the people. His wisdom confounded those who sought to argue with him, and ultimately false charges were brought against him, and he was stoned to death. One of the witnesses to his death was Saul - the future Apostle Paul. (D,S)

3 December 27, 2008 We Remember: ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST (died c. 100), "the disciple whom Jesus loved," had been a disciple of St. John the Baptist, but then he followed Christ, together with Andrew, the brother of Peter. John was usually invited, along with Peter and James, to share in some of the more significant events in the life of Christ. He preached the gospel in Samaria with Peter, and according to legend he preached also at Antioch and later at Ephesus, where his tomb is venerated. He visited Rome but was exiled to the island of Patmos, where he wrote the Book of Revelation. Previously he had written his gospel and three letters. He died at Patmos towards the end of the 1st century. (D,S) Holy Family Sunday, December 28, 2008 We Remember: FEAST OF THE HOLY INNOCENTS: The biblical basis for this feast is found in Matthew 2: It commemorates the infant boys slain by Herod's soldiers while seeking to kill the Infant Jesus. This feast has been observed since the 5th century. (D,S) December 29, 2008 We Remember: ST. THOMAS BECKET ( ), Archbishop of Canterbury, was murdered in the cathedral on this day, Dec. 29, in He was canonized three years later. Thomas was born in London, studied at Paris and Auxerre, and was promoted to the office of chancellor under King Henry II. He was ordained priest and bishop in 1162 and was the first person in England to celebrate the solemnity of the Blessed Trinity. He became more ascetical after becoming archbishop, and his relationship with the king deteriorated. Becket refused to sign a document that severely limited the rights of the Church, and was abandoned by the bishops who wanted to maintain good relations with the king. He spent six years in exile in France. The pope, Alexander II, helped effect a reconciliation, and Becket returned to England, but the implacable hatred of his foes reached the point at which Becket was murdered by four knights at the altar of the Blessed Virgin and St. Benedict in Canterbury Cathedral. His shrine became a place of pilgrimage and he was one of the great saints of the Middle Ages. Nativity Kerygma Christ, light of light, is born today, and since he is born to us, he is born in us as light, and therefore we who believe are born today to new light. That is to say, our souls are born to new life and new grace by receiving him who is the truth. For Christ, invisible in his own nature, has become visible in our nature. What else can this mean, except that first he has become visible as man; secondly, he has become visible in his Church? He wills to be visible in us, to live in us, work in us, and save us through his secret action in our own hearts and the hearts of our brothers. So we must receive the light of the newborn Savior by faith, in order to manifest it by our witness in common praise and by the works of charity towards one another. We are born in Christ today...can it be surprising that we feel in our hearts the exultation of the divine light which streams into our spirit from the presence of the newborn Savior and transforms us from glory to glory in his image? This is the mystery of light which shines upon us today. - from Seasons of Celebration by Thomas Merton Amid Songs of Angels This Child and Redeemer Who comes amid the songs of angels to answer the prayers of all the Patriarchs and Prophets, and to satisfy unrecognized longings of the whole lineage of Adam, exiled from Paradise, comes also to quiet the groanings of all creation. For the whole world has been in labor and in mourning since the fall of man. The whole created universe, with all its manifold beauty and splendor, has travailed in disorder, longing for the birth of a Savior. The Patriarchs and Prophets prayed for the coming of Christ in Bethlehem, and this first coming did not silence the groanings of creation. - from Seasons of Celebration by Thomas Merton Invisible in his own nature he became visible in ours. Beyond our grasp, he chose to come within our grasp. Existing before time began, he began to exist at a moment in time. Incapable of suffering as God, he did not refuse to be a man, capable of suffering. Immortal, he chose to be subject to the laws of death. LEO THE GREAT On Christmas Day, 1946, the comedian W.C. Fields died. During his last days, a visitor to his hospital room found Fields reading a Bible. The amazed visitor asked Fields what he was doing. Fields replied, "Just looking for loopholes. I think we all sin by needlessly disobeying the apostolic injunction to "rejoice" as much as by anything else. - C.S. Lewis Be at peace with your own soul; then heaven and earth will be at peace with you. Enter eagerly into the treasure house that is within you, and so you will see the things that are in heaven; for there is but one single entry to them both. The ladder that leads to the kingdom is hidden within your soul. Flee from sin, dive into yourself, and in your soul you will discover the stairs by which to ascend.
