3 HYMN OF INVOCATION THE DIVINE SERVICE March 16, 2014 The Service of Entrance The God of Abraham praise, who reigns enthroned above; Ancient of everlasting days, and God of love. Jehovah! Great I AM! by earth and heaven confessed: I bow and bless the sacred name, forever blest. The God of Abraham praise, at whose supreme command from earth I rise, and seek the joys at his right hand. I all on earth forsake, its wisdom, fame, and power, and him my only portion make, my shield and tower. He by himself hath sworn, I on his oath depend; I shall, on eagles wings upborne, to heaven ascend; I shall behold his face, I shall his power adore, And sing the wonders of his grace forevermore. The goodly land I see, with peace and plenty blest, a land of sacred liberty and endless rest. There milk and honey flow, and oil and wine abound, and trees of life forever grow, with mercy crowned. There dwells the Lord our King, the Lord our Righteousness, triumphant over the world and sin, the Prince of Peace. 4 God did make us in his image! We ll talk more about that in the sermon today. 5 Minister: Dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy. Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God People: Almighty and most merciful Father; we have erred, and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou those, O God, who confess their faults. Restore thou those who are penitent; according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen. 6 DECLARATION OF ABSOLUTION Minister: Hear the Word of the Gospel: Christ has died for our sins and been raised for our justification. All you who repent of your sin and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ for your salvation, rejoice and be glad and give glory to the Lord who has taken away all of your sins in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. We declare God to be our help and our creator, then use the words of Psalm 51:15, asking God to help us praise him. 7 The Service of the Word PSALTER Psalm 121 God truly is our help and our creator, as this Psalm reminds us. I to the hills will lift my eyes. From whence shall come my aid? My safety cometh from the Lord who heaven and earth has made. Thy foot he ll not let slide, nor will he slumber that thee keeps. Lo, he that keepeth Israel, he slumbers not nor sleeps. The Lord thee keeps; the Lord thy shade on thy right hand doth stay; The moon by night thee shall not smite, nor yet the sun by day. The Lord shall keep thee from all ill; he shall preserve thy soul. It s a new birth! 1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him. 3 Jesus answered him, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus said to him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother s womb and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not 7

8 marvel that I said to you, You must be born again. 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. 9 Nicodemus said to him, How can these things be? 10 Jesus answered him, Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 9 PRAYER OF SUPPLICATION AND THANKSGIVING Unison: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. THE SERMON LESSONS Exodus 20:13; Matthew 5: :13 You shall not murder. 5:21 You have heard that it was said to those of old, You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment. 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, You fool! will be liable to the hell of fire. 23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. (ESV) Minister: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! MORNING SERMON Rev. D. P. Cassidy Pastor Cassidy continues our sermons on the Ten Commandments today we will think about the meaning of the sixth commandment. How do we know where life comes from? 9

10 Genesis 1:26 tell us, Then God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. What does it mean that we are made in the image of God? How seriously does God take it when a human life is attacked? Does this apply just to physical attacks and actions against life? Look at the verses from Matthew 5 on page 9. Mark the words insults and angry. What does Jesus say about those who use words to hurt others? Proverbs has more to say about our hurtful words (deceit, quarreling, lying). Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death is the man who deceives his neighbor and says, I am only joking! For lack of wood the fire goes out, and where there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases. [Later you can look up Proverbs 26:21-28 for more examples.] So we are all guilty of hurting others with our words and have no hope in ourselves but Christ has set us free from the curse of our sin! Who was the first person freed by the death of Jesus? Ever heard of Barabbas? We can live because our Savior give us His life and he invites us to his Table, where we find our true life in him! 10

11 The Service of the Table CORPORATE CONFESSION OF FAITH The Nicene Creed Unison: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made: Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost, of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. Extravagant in your love and incomparable in wisdom and power, you are the one in whom we live, and move, and have our being. We return to you now these tithes and offerings, from thy hand giving to thee. Take these loaves and fish and make of them your feast for the hungry that your church may be sustained, your gospel proclaimed in all the world, one generation tell the next of your greatness, and a house for your name be built among us. We pray this in the matchless name of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. People: Amen. 13

14 THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Minister: The Lord be with you! People: And also with you! Minister: Lift up your hearts! People: We lift them up to the Lord! Minister: Let us give thanks to our Lord God! People: It is good and right to do so! Minister: It is very good and right that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to you, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, Everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. You bid your people cleanse their hearts and prepare with joy for the paschal feast. Renew our zeal in faith and life, and bring us to the fullness of grace that belongs to the children of God. Therefore, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we praise and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you and singing: Isaiah 6:3, Matthew 21:9 14

15 COMMUNION HYMN (as the bread is served) Pastor Cassidy reminded us that we are in a battle between life and death as you sing, notice how Christ has already defeated Satan and gives us His life! Christ Jesus lay in death s strong bands, for our offenses given; But now at God s right hand he stands and brings us life from heaven; Therefore let us joyful be and sing to God right thankfully Loud songs of hallelujah. Hallelujah! No son of man could conquer death, such mischief sin had wrought us, For innocence dwelt not on earth, and therefore death had brought us Into thralldom from of old and ever grew more strong and bold And keep us in his bondage. Hallelujah! But Jesus Christ God s only Son, to our low state descended, The cause of death he has undone, his power forever ended, Ruined all his right and claim and left him nothing but the name, His sting is lost forever. Hallelujah! It was a strange and dreadful strife when life and death contended; The victory remained with life, the reign of death was ended; Holy Scripture plainly says that death is swallowed up by death, its sting is lost forever. Hallelujah! Here the true Paschal Lamb we see, whom God so freely gave us; He died on the accursed tree So strong his love to save us. See, his blood now marks our door; faith points to it, death passes over, and Satan cannot harm us. Hallelujah! So let us keep the festival whereto the Lord invites us; Christ is himself the joy of all, the sun that warms and lights us. By his grace he doth impart, eternal sunshine to the heart; the night of sin is ended. Hallelujah! 15

16 Then let us feast this joyful day on Christ, the Bread of heaven; The Word of grace hath purged away the old and evil leaven. Christ alone our souls will feed, he is our meat and drink indeed; Faith lives upon no other. Hallelujah! AGNUS DEI COMMUNION HYMN (as the cup is served) Jesus lives, and so shall I. Death! thy sting is gone forever! He who deigned for me to die, lives, the bands of death to sever. He shall raise me from the dust: Jesus is my hope and trust. Jesus lives and reigns supreme; and, his kingdom still remaining, I shall also be with him, ever living, ever reigning. God has promised; be it must: Jesus is my hope and trust. Jesus lives, and by his grace, victory over my passions giving, I will cleanse my heart and ways, ever to his glory living. Me he raises from the dust: Jesus is my hope and trust. Jesus lives! I know full well naught from him my heart can sever, Life nor death nor powers of hell, joy nor grief, henceforth forever. None of all his saints is lost: Jesus is my hope and trust. Jesus lives and now is death but the gate of life immortal; This shall calm my trembling breath when I pass its gloomy portal. Faith shall cry, as fails each sense: Jesus is my confidence. 17 DEPARTING HYMN O Lord, throughout these forty days you prayed and kept the fast; Inspire repentance for our sin, and free us from our past. Be with us through this season, Lord, and all our earthly days, That when the final Easter dawns, we join in heaven s praise. Did You Notice? Last week we read from Matthew 4 the story of Jesus temptation in the wilderness. Look carefully on the cover and see if you can tell what is happening. Who are the two figures? One is holding something and the other is pointing as he talks. Look up Matthew 4:1-4 for some clues. At Home This Week Can you recite the sixth commandment? If you do not already know it, practice this week: The fifth commandment is You shall not murder. (Exodus 20:13, NKJV) 17
