3 THE DIVINE SERVICE November 10, 2013 The Service of Entrance HYMN OF INVOCATION O worship the King, all-glorious above. O gratefully sing his power and his love; Our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days, Pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise. O tell of his might, O sing of his grace, Whose robe is the light, whose canopy space; His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form, And dark is his path on the wings of the storm. This earth, with its store of wonders untold, Almighty, thy power hath founded of old, Established it fast by a changeless decree, And round it hath cast, like a mantle, the sea. 4 This Call to Worship comes from Psalm 149:1-2. Who are the children of Zion? We are! Rejoice in your King Jesus today. Minister: Praise ye the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song and his praise in the great congregation. People: Let the children of Zion rejoice in their King! Minister: In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. Minister: Let us pray. PRAYER OF ADORATION CORPORATE CONFESSION OF SIN Minister: If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor People: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. 4

5 DECLARATION OF ABSOLUTION Minister: Hear the Word of the Gospel: Christ has died for our sins and been raised for our justification. All you who repent of your sin and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ for your salvation, rejoice and be glad and give glory to the Lord who has taken away all of your sins in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. 6 The Service of the Word THE PSALTER Psalm 148 Today we read together Psalm 148, calling on all of creation to join in praising the Name of the Lord. We ll take turns with the pastor in this responsive reading. Minister: All: Hallelujah! Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights. Praise him, all you angels of his; praise him, all his host. Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars. Praise him, heaven of heavens, and you waters above the heavens. Let them praise the Name of the Lord; for he commanded, and they were created. He made them stand fast forever and ever; he gave them a law which shall not pass away. Praise the Lord from the earth, you sea-monsters and all deeps; Fire and hail, snow and fog, tempestuous wind, doing his will; Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars; Wild beasts and all cattle, creeping things and wingèd birds; Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the world; Young men and maidens, old and young together. 7 THE EPISTLE LESSON 2 Thessalonians 2: But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. 14 To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter. 16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, 17 comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! THE GOSPEL LESSON Luke 20: There came to him some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, 28 and they asked him a question, saying, Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man s brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died without children. 30 And the second 31 and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died. 32 Afterward the woman also died. 33 In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife. 34 And Jesus said to them, The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, 35 but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, 36 for they cannot die anymore, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. 37 But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. 38 Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to him. 39 Then some of the scribes answered, Teacher, you have spoken well. 40 For they no longer dared to ask him any question. 8 OUR RESPONSE Wake, awake, for night is flying, the watchmen on the heights are crying, Awake, Jerusalem, at last! Midnight hears the welcome voices, and at the thrilling cry rejoices: Come forth, ye virgins, night is past! The Bridegroom comes; awake, your lamps with gladness take; alleluia! And for his marriage feast prepare, for you must go to meet him there. Zion hears the watchmen singing, and all her heart with joy is springing; She wakes, she rises from her gloom: For her Lord comes down all-glorious, the strong in grace, in truth victorious; Her Star is risen, her Light is come! Ah, come, thou blessed Lord, O Jesus, Son of God, alleluia! We follow till the halls we see where thou hast bid us sup with thee. 9 CHORAL PRAYER The choir leads us in a heartfelt prayer for God s help and grace in our lives as we give him glory and praise. (This music is by a Russian composer notice the low bass notes!) PRAYER OF SUPPLICATION AND THANKSGIVING Unison: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. 9

10 THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES Acts 17: Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw that the city was full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there. 18 Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him. And some said, What does this babbler wish to say? Others said, He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection. 19 And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? 20 For you bring some strange things to our ears. We wish to know therefore what these things mean. 21 Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new. 22 So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. 23 For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, To the unknown god. What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. 24 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. 26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, 28 for In him we live and move and have our being ; as even some of your own poets have said, For we are indeed his offspring. 29 Being then God s offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man. 30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead. 32 Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked. But others said, We will hear you again 10

11 about this. 33 So Paul went out from their midst. 34 But some men joined him and believed, among whom also were Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them. Minister: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! MORNING SERMON Rev. D. P. Cassidy Pastor Cassidy is preaching from the book of Acts this month. As we continue our study of Acts with chapter 17, we see how the ministry of Paul and others turned the world upside down. What places did Paul visit in the city of Athens? What did he notice that provoked his spirit? The people in Athens worshiped many gods, including war, beauty, partying, art, and power. Do you think people in Austin worship any idols like those? What did Paul do when he met these idol-worshiping people? In what way did he speak to them? Find the verse where Paul tells the men of Athens about 1. God the Creator: Verse 2. God the Sustainer (gives life and breath): Verse 3. God the Savior: Verse 11

12 Paul went with some of the Athenian men to the Areopagus (also called Mars Hill). Can you find it on this map of the city of Athens? Notice that from this high point you can look over the city, including the Acropolis, where many temples were located. Paul spoke to the men with grace, respect, and truth. 12

13 (This is a photo of how Mars Hill looks in modern times.) How was Paul s message received? We bring one message to the world of forgiveness and life. Let s think about ways to deliver this good news to all different people with many questions about God and his truth. 13

14 The Service of the Table CORPORATE CONFESSION OF FAITH The Nicene Creed Unison: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made: Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost, of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge the quick and the dead: Whose kingdom shall have no end. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and giver of life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spake by the prophets. And I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 14

HYMN OF GRATITUDE TO GOD How deep the Father s love for us, how vast beyond all measure That he should give his only Son, to make a wretch his treasure How great the pain of searing loss, the Father turned his face away As wounds which mar the Chosen One, bring many sons to glory. Behold the man upon a cross, my sin upon his shoulders Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers It was my sin that held him there until it was accomplished His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished. I will not boast in anything, no gifts, no pow r, no wisdom: But I will boast in Jesus Christ; his death and resurrection Why should I gain from his reward? I cannot give an answer. But this I know with all my heart; his wounds have paid my ransom. 15

16 v Minister: Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendor, and the majesty; for everything in heaven and on earth is yours. Just as we did earlier today with Psalm 148, we praise God along with all of creation. Alleluia! THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Minister: The Lord be with you! People: And also with you! Minister: Lift up your hearts! People: We lift them up to the Lord! Minister: Let us give thanks to our Lord God! People: It is good and right to do so! Minister: It is very good and right that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to you, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, Everlasting God, who in the multitude of your saints did surround us with so great a cloud of witnesses that we, rejoicing in their fellowship, may run with patience the race that is set before us and, together with them, may receive the crown of glory that does not fade away. Therefore, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we praise and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you and singing: 16

17 Isaiah 6:3, Matthew 21:9 COMMUNION HYMN (as the bread is served) At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, every tongue confess him king of glory now. Tis the Father s pleasure we should call him Lord, who from the beginning was the mighty Word. At his voice creation sprang at once to sight, all the angel faces, all the hosts of light, thrones and dominations, stars upon their way, all the heavenly orders in their great array. Humbled for a season to receive a name from the lips of sinners unto whom he came, faithfully he bore it spotless to the last, brought it back victorious, when from death he passed. Bore it up triumphant with its human light, Through all ranks of creatures to the central height, To the throne of Godhead, to the Father s breast, Filled it with the glory of that perfect rest. Name him, brothers, name him, Love as strong as death, But with awe and wonder, and with bated breath; He is God the Savior, he is Christ the Lord, Ever to be worshipped, trusted, and adored. 17

18 In your hearts enthrone him; there let him subdue all that is not holy, all that is not true: crown him as your captain in temptation's hour: let his will enfold you in its light and power. Brothers, this Lord Jesus shall return again, with his Father s glory, with his angel train; for all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow, and our hearts confess him King of glory now. AGNUS DEI COMMUNION HYMN (as the cup is served) When I survey the wondrous cross, on which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ my God; All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood. See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down: Did ever such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown? BENEDICTION DEPARTING HYMN Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all. 18

19 Did You Notice? Have you ever seen these letters after a printed Scripture lesson KJV, ESV, NASB what do they mean? These are abbreviations for translations of the Word of God. The King James Version, English Standard Version, and New American Standard Version are the ones commonly used at Redeemer. As you probably know, the Bible was not originally written in English, but in Hebrew and Greek. So in order for us to read it, it must be translated for us. We re thankful for these translations that we can use to read and study God s Word. At Home This Week Find the hymn Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying on page 8. We sang about watchmen, virgins, lamps what is going on here? The hymn writer (Philipp Nicolai) uses pictures from several portions of the Bible to encourage us to be watchful and ready for the return of the Bridegroom (Jesus) for his Bride (the Church). What awaits us is unimaginable; what a joyful time that will be! Nicolai takes imagery from the parable of the virgins in Matthew 25:1-13, the wedding feast in Luke 12:35-48, from Isaiah 62, and from Revelation 21 and 22. Take the challenge look up these Scriptures and see if you can find the sources of the pictures used in the hymn text. 19
