Sunday of the Resurrection: Easter Day April 16, :00 & 11:15 A.M. Saint George s Episcopal Church Arlington, Virginia
Welcome to Saint George s Saint George's is a vibrant, inclusive, multi-faceted faith community. We welcome everyone- no exceptions- because we believe that inclusion is a Gospel value. Life in the 21st century can be very isolating. But as the great Anglican theologian John Donne so famously said, "No man is an island unto himself." We are meant to be in relationship- with God, with each other and with our deepest and truest selves. As Christians, we believe that Jesus showed us what that looks like. So whoever you are and wherever you are on your spiritual journey, we hope that you will join us as we follow Jesus in community, loving God, serving others and changing the world. Interested in learning more? Fill this out and return to an usher or place in the collection plate and we will be in touch soon. Please write as legibly as possible. 4 Salutation Celebrant: People: Alleluia. Christ is risen. The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia. Hymn of Praise Collect of the Day Book of Common Prayer p. 222 Celebrant: People: Celebrant: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of our enemy: Grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 4
The First Lesson Jeremiah 31:1-6 Lector: A reading from the Prophet Jeremiah. At that time, says the Lord, I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people. Thus says the Lord: The people who survived the sword found grace in the wilderness; when Israel sought for rest, the Lord appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you. Again I will build you, and you shall be built, O virgin Israel! Again you shall take your tambourines, and go forth in the dance of the merrymakers. Again you shall plant vineyards on the mountains of Samaria; the planters shall plant, and shall enjoy the fruit. For there shall be a day when sentinels will call in the hill country of Ephraim: Come, let us go up to Zion, to the Lord our God. Psalm 118:1-2, Choir first, then all sing the antiphon indicated. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his mercy endures for ever. Let Israel now proclaim, "His mercy endures for ever." Antiphon The LORD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation. There is a sound of exultation and victory in the tents of the righteous: "The right hand of the LORD has triumphed! the right hand of the LORD is exalted! the right hand of the LORD has triumphed!" I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD. Antiphon The LORD has punished me sorely, but he did not hand me over to death. Open for me the gates of righteousness; I will enter them; I will offer thanks to the LORD. "This is the gate of the LORD; he who is righteous may enter." I will give thanks to you, for you answered me and have become my salvation. Antiphon The same stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is the LORD'S doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes. On this day the LORD has acted; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Antiphon 5
The Second Lesson Acts 10:34-43 Lector: A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. Peter began to speak to Cornelius and the other Gentiles: "I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ--he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." Lector: People: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 6
Gradual Hymn "The Strife is O'er" VICTORY The people stand. 7
Holy Gospel Matthew 28:1-10 Celebrant: People: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ. After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And suddenly there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. For fear of him the guards shook and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, He has been raised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him. This is my message for you. So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them and said, Greetings! And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me. Celebrant: People: The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Christ. The Sermon A brief period of silence The Rev. Shearon Sykes Williams The Nicene Creed BCP p.358 The people stand. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 8
Prayers of the People written by Elliot Branch On this Sunday of the Resurrection, we offer prayers of gratitude for the gift of your Son, whose perfect sacrifice triumphed over sin and death. In the newness of life, we pray that each of us may be one of your gifts to the Church and the world. For all nations and all peoples of the world: that may we grow in our tolerance and understanding of each other so that we may come to dwell in Christ as He dwells in us. Lord, in your triumph, Hear our prayer For the ministry of the Body of Christ, ordained and lay: that we may spread the good news of the Resurrection through our faith and through our lives. Lord, in your triumph, Hear our prayer For the earth and all of its creatures: that we may treasure them as you treasure the whole of your creation. Lord, in your triumph, Hear our prayer For the widow, the orphan, the stranger, and all who struggle to give voice to their needs and to obtain justice: may we see Christ in them as He sees himself in us. Lord, in your triumph, Hear our prayer For those who are in need of healing physical, spiritual, or emotional, especially [ ]: that they may experience the healing power of the Resurrection. Lord, in your triumph, Hear our prayer For those who have entered into your eternal rest, especially [ ]: that they may receive a full measure of your triumph over sin and death. Lord, in your triumph, Hear our prayer Celebrant: Almighty God, you know what we desire before we ask and you always provide what we need. Answer these prayers and the prayers of our hearts as may be best for us and for your creation, and always to the glory of your Name, through Christ our Lord. Amen 9
The Confession of Sin may be omitted during the Great Fifty Days of Easter. The Peace BCP p.360 Celebrant: The peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And also with you. THE HOLY COMMUNION Offertory Anthem Sing ye to the Lord Edward Bairstow Presentation Hymn This is the feast of victory Festival Canticle * Children are invited to join the choristers in the procession down the center aisle, placing flowers in the cross next to the chancel steps. * 10
The Great Thanksgiving (Eucharistic Prayer D) BCP p.372 The following is sung Celebrant continues: It is truly right to glorify you, Father, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and for ever. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance. Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day; and, beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you, and glorify your Name, as we sing, Celebrant and People: 11
Celebrant continues: We acclaim you, holy Lord, glorious in power Recalling Christ s death and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to your right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you have given us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you. Celebrant and People: We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you, and we pray to you, Lord our God. Celebrant continues: Lord, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend upon us, and upon these gifts Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours, Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen. The Lord s Prayer BCP p.364 And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Celebrant and People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen The Breaking of the Bread The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept. Then may be sung or said: Cantor: Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Celebrant continues: The gifts of God for the people of God. 12
Music at the Communion The Bread and Wine are distributed to the communicants. Communion may be received around the Altar platform.
