You will know, in your own experience of prayer, that re are times when you experience God s nearness, joy, love, hope, & deep interior peace in God s presence, when prayer seems very easy (spiritual consolation). There are also times when you undergo periods of struggle in prayer, with dryness, sadness, & lack of affect, making prayer difficult, and tempting you to abandon practice of it as a waste of time (spiritual desolation). If this sounds familiar to you, that is because such experiences are normal. Understanding se movements of heart in prayer, why y occur, and how to respond to m, is what is commonly referred to in Church s tradition as Discernment of Spirits. One of people that helps us to unpack and understand se kinds of spiritual experience is this Friday s Saint and founder of Jesuits Saint Ignatius of Loyola ( ). While we don t have time to explicate entirety of his teaching on se matters here, let s take a look at his answer to a commonly asked question about experience of spiritual desolation, namely, why do we experience it? The first thing to keep in mind is that God is not cause of spiritual desolation, however, he allows us to experience it for three reasons (Ignatius cites three, but it is not intended to be exhaustive): (1) As a means of healing us of our faults by this St. Ignatius means that, at times, we are not always diligent in our spiritual practices, and by withdrawing spiritual consolation, God alerts us as to need for conversion in our lives (i.e. that something needs to change). (2) As a trial by this St. Ignatius means that God wishes to reveal to us how much we are in His service. The difference between a solider and a mercenary is that solider remains loyal no matter what, and mercenary leaves when he is no longer paid. The one who is serious about communion with God will continue to pursue it, even when re are no consolations. (3) So, we can perceive spiritual consolation as a totally gratuitous gift from God by this St. Ignatius means to remind us that all spiritual growth is a gift from God, and that re is nothing we can do to produce in ourselves spiritual consolation. This awareness is intended to lead us to greater humility, and open us to accept that which God wishes to share with us. Saint Ignatius shares se insights with us so that in times of spiritual desolation (something we all experience), we can shift our attention away from pain and sorrow we feel and focus on reasons why we are experiencing m. Such a vantage point will enable us to resist desolation, and having diagnosed problem, take appropriate spiritual steps to remedy it. When spiritual desolation is not resisted, it will lead to spiritual harm and backsliding in spiritual life, but when spiritual desolation is resisted, it leads to spiritual growth and deepening of our relationship with God. If you are interested in going deeper into this type of understanding of your spiritual experience, I recommend: The Discernment of Spirits: An Ignatian Guide for Everyday Living by Far Timothy Gallagher. Here you will find a very practical (with examples) explanation of St. Ignatius fourteen rules for understanding experience of our spiritual lives. 2

Jn 3:16 Ordinary Time XVII 29 July 2018 Key Card System - The Cadral is in process of upgrading doors to a key-card access system (you may have noticed card readers being installed). Once this new system goes live, none of old keys will work any longer. That stairwell will be reopened on Monday 30th, with access to all floors. Repair work on west stairwell (i.e. stairwell near elevators) will begin shortly reafter. It is estimated that work necessary to repair west stairwell will take approximately one month to complete. The west stairwell will be closed during construction. Anyone entering garage from East 9th Street entrance will be directed to use North elevator only. Work to replace South elevator is currently underway. Be assured that free parking is always available for those who come to worship at Cadral on Saturdays and Sundays, even if garage has rates posted for games or special events. 4 The Cadral of St. John Evangelist Stewardship of Earth - As Christians, we believe that earth is entrusted to our faithful stewardship. We are not its owners, but its caretakers on behalf of God. How can I be a good steward? Bottled Water - With so many brands available, it can be tempting for consumers to opt for packaged water instead of more environmentally conscious choices. The marketing and advertising teams of many bottled water companies often insist that ir products are somehow purer and fresher than water that flows through a tap. The truth is that Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets extremely high standards for public drinking water systems, while bottled water remains largely unregulated. Close inspection of labels can point to an interesting fact: many popular brands obtain ir water from municipal sources. These companies simply bottle tap-water in a factory and ship products to be sold at retail outlets. This might mean that some bottled water might be less safe than what comes from your tap! Consider obtaining a reusable water bottle, or re-filling bottle from a previous purchase. It will save you money and save on wasted plastic too! Please recycle! For more ideas visit: <saintjohncadral.com/recycle>. Serving Poor in Our Midst Each day, numerous people come to rectory office seeking assistance. Through your generosity, and with assistance of workers at Bp. Cosgrove Center, we are able to fill some of ir needs. Listed below is a report on assistance Cadral has offered this past month, and on your generosity in support of se efforts. July Donations Charitable Assistance Fund...$2, Cosgrove Center...$1, June Assistance Expenses Greyhound transport for stranded... $ RTA Assistance... $ Rent / Utility Assistance...$1, Emergency... $ Cosgrove Coffeemaker...$2, Total $5, Cleveland, Ohio A Community of Justice & Love The School Supply Drive was a great success, surpassing our goal! We filled 52 bags with listed supplies, including some assembled from donations of multiples of a single item. There was a crate of assorted supplies left over, and enough monetary donations to provide 121 more bags, with a bit extra for incidental needs. Thank you for making school year something to look forward to for inner city children with se bags of fresh supplies. Chaplain Services - If you have a loved one incarcerated in one of eight counties of Diocese of Cleveland and would like to have a priest, deacon, or a lay volunteer minister visit with m, please call Parish Life Office at or x The Diocesan Ministry to Incarcerated has a presence in three state prisons, county jails, and juvenile facilities located within our Diocese. If you have a loved one in one of se institutions, we would be glad to have someone visit with m. Human Trafficking - July 30 is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. Victims of labor trafficking are not a homogeneous group of people. Victims are young children, teenagers, men, and women. Some of m enter country legally on worker visas for domestic, entertainment, food service, computer, or agricultural work, while ors enter illegally. Some work in legal occupations such as domestic, factory, or construction work, while ors toil in illegal industries such as drug and arms trade, or panhandling. Traffickers may coach m to answer questions with a cover story about being a student or tourist. For more information on how to spot victims of trafficking, see US Catholic Sisters Against Human Trafficking website: <sistersagainsttrafficking.org>. Veterans Experience Action Center - On Aug. 9-11, Cuyahoga County Community College will host a Veterans Experience Action Center event at ir Western Campus, W. Pleasant Valley Rd, in Parma. Resources will include health care; compensation claims assistance; public benefits claims assistance, educational resources, and information on memorial benefits. Times for events will be: Aug. 9th: 12-3 pm; Aug. 10th & 11th: 9 am-3 pm. For More information call or , webchat at: <211oh.org> or visit <tri-c.edu/veac>. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son of God, born of Far before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with Far; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (All bow) and by Holy Spirit was incarnate of Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on third day in accordance with Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at right hand of Far. He will come again in glory to judge living and dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in Holy Spirit, Lord, giver of life, who proceeds from Far and Son, who with Far and Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for forgiveness of sins and I look forward to resurrection of dead and life of world to come. 10 The Cadral of St. John Evangelist Intentions of Holy Far July: Priests and ir Pastoral Ministry - That priests, who experience fatigue and loneliness in ir pastoral work, may find help and comfort in ir intimacy with Lord and in ir friendship with ir bror priests. August: The Treasure of Families - That any far-reaching decisions of economists and politicians may protect family as one of treasures of humanity. Charitable Giving Ideas - Will you have increased income as a result of new tax changes? Perhaps you can consider increasing your offertory contribution to our parish. Changes in tax law kept in place several popular and attractive charitable gifting options. Gifting appreciated stock (held more than 1 year) to our parish may allow you to deduct stock s full value and bypass capital gains tax. Also, if you are 70 ½ or older, you may be able to reduce your taxable income this year with a gift made directly from your IRA to our parish. Talk to your advisors and IRA administrator for more information, and to be sure that a gift is made directly from an IRA to a qualified charity such as our parish. Questions?
