With anything in life, preparation is required. We prepared for our jobs and life in general by going to school for at least 12 years and even more with college and graduate school. We have prepared and taken countless exams, learning about what each subject, their materials and the tests will cover. Doctors, attorneys, builders, farmers, cooks, priests, etc., all prepare for their work. We prepare continuously in our lives because we know that it is the only way to be successful, no matter what the undertaking may be. Then why shouldn t we also prepare to enter eternity, in other words, to prepare to be with God forever? On a weekly base an orthodox Christian has learned to prepare their mind, body and soul to be with their Heavenly Father on Sunday. They have made and live a lifestyle that is in constant preparation to receive God through His body and blood - Holy Communion. First and foremost we are taught to fast two days per week. We remember our Lords betrayal in the Garden of Gethsemane on Wednesdays and His Crucifixion on Fridays. We pray for each other asking God and others for forgiveness for anything we may have done to hurt them. St John of Kronstadt stated that when we pray and allow our minds to wander to other things, like cares of this life, we offend our Lord by not being able to be in His presence for a few short minutes. Great Lent is about nurturing our relationship with God, wanting to be in His holy presence. The Church gives us this time period to grow in Christ through denial of our abundance especially from meat, fish, dairy and eggs. There is nothing bad or evil about food. In fact the Lord teaches us that it is not what goes into a man s mouth that defiles him, but rather what comes out of it. Through prayer and fasting miracles happen. One miracle I recall is of a man who had a cancer. He left his life of comfort and abundance and turned towards God in his hour of need by going to a monastery. There the abbot told him for the next 40 days the fathers would pray for him in private and in the liturgy they celebrated every day. The ασκησεις or spiritual work he would have to do was fast for 40 days, no food at all! The man was willing to do anything since his cancer was terminal. The fathers prayed for him to be cured and to give him strength to fast without any food. Not only was he able in his weak condition to fast but after 40 days his cancer was gone. Glory to God! Our goal as Christians is to prepare to be with God for all eternity. Everything that we do to live a Christ type of life inches us towards truly wanting to be with God forever. On occasion I have said in Church that if you don t know Jesus, why would you want to live with Him forever? That would be like learning that you will be going to live with a relative from another country that you have never met but have heard about them all your life. Great Lent is a time to put our lives in order -a time to come face to face with God, our Father who loves us more than we can imagine. But it takes effort. No one said that it would be easy to be a Christian. Like all relationships in life, it takes effort and preparation. Our Father who gave us life wants us to be with Him forever. From the time Adam and Eve were cast out of Paradise, our Father has been in preparation of receiving us back with Him. He has sent the Prophets and the Saints to prepare us through their examples of living a life in Him. Ultimately, He sent His beloved Son to show us through example how to live that life that leads to Him. Don t let Great Lent pass you by as any other time of the year.. Pray. Come to as many services as you can- as there are many offered throughout Lent. Leave the world behind you and turn towards heaven prepare! May the Lord our God grant you strength and peace. A blessed Lent, Καλη Σαρακοστη! Fr. Nick

3 Page 3 PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ, We have much to be enthusiastic about and thankful for in this upcoming year. With Panagia s intercessions, Father Nick s prayerful activity and our witnessing Christ as a loving, prayerful and faithful community, we hope to accomplish much to the Glory of God. Already completed this year: Father Nick s reception office is fully furnished and only needs a few finishing touches; The Father George Vaporis Library at the Ed Center is open to all parishioners; the Nativity Book Store was relocated from the hallway to the Ed Center to expand operations and hopefully help meet the needs of the Orthodox community at large. Currently, the goal is to be open by the first day of Lent, March 14th - official hours to be announced. Additionally, the parish council is preparing to move forward on many key projects as soon as possible. Our first priority is licensing the kitchen which, in addition to meeting our festival needs, would enhance our ability to fundraise year around. Our second priority is to replace the damaged carpet in the church while adding marble flooring down the main aisle and in the narthex. Our third priority is to complete the church flat roof replacement which was postponed until this coming spring. Please pray that these projects come to completion properly and quickly. We hope to move forward with our next set of goals which include eliminating the mortgage and vision planning for future growth and expansion. Last month our second Council of Ministries meeting under the guidance of Fr. Nick was attended by returning ministry chairpeople, along with many new ministries including: Presvytera Liza (Family Night), Anne Randall (Nativity Kiss), Mike Randall (Nativity Bookstore), Gayle Ford (Fr. George Vaporis Library), John Petrou (Welcoming Committee), Dimitri Tzelepis (Byzantine Choir), Thekla Szlinis (Grounds Committee), Perry Christy (Book Club). Thank you to all our ministry heads for graciously volunteering your time, talents and treasure for our parish to the Glory of God. If you are interested in getting involved in any of these ministries or starting a committee, please see Fr. Nick or any parish council member. Lastly, our Nativity Parish is scheduled to host a pan orthodox vespers sponsored by the Council of Orthodox Christian Churches (COCC) of Metropolitan Detroit on Sunday of The Holy Cross, April 3rd at. Please mark this on your calendar and make every effort to attend, it is a special opportunity to welcome with warmth and hospitality many neighboring clergy and faithful into our parish. Many wishes for a blessed, fruitful and God pleasing lent. Καλή δύναµη! Yours In Christ, Louis Poulos Parish Council

4 Page 4 Wisdom of the Saints From the 2016 Daily Lives, Miracles and Wisdom of the Saints and ing Calendar The Orthodox Calendar Company ~ Do not be irritated with those who sin; do not develop a habit of noticing every sin in others, and judging them, as we are inclined to do. Everyone shall give an answer to God for himself. Correct your own sins; and amend your own heart. ~ St. John of Kronstadt If you begin to guard wealth it will not be yours. But if you begin to distribute it, you will not lose it. ~ St. Basil the Great Remember, never to fear the power of evil more than your trust in the power and love of God. ~ Apostle Hermas of the Seventy The Lord permits our sufferings in order that we might feel our weakness and strive more fervently toward the source of every good thing, our Creator, who gives everyone what is profitable. ~ St. John Maximovitch Prayer is the test of everything; prayer is also the source of everything; prayer is the driving force of everything; prayer is also the director of everything. If prayer is right, everything is right. For prayer will not allow anything to go wrong. ~ St. Theophan the Recluse It is necessary for a Christian to fast, in order to clear his mind, to rouse and develop his feelings, and to stimulate his will to useful activity. These three human capabilities we darken and stifle above all by surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life (Lk. 21:34) ~ St. John of Kronstadt Prayer is a remedy against grief and depression. ~ St. Nilus of Sinai Do not forget prayer - it is the life of the soul. ~ St. Nikon of Optina If you want to overcome the spirit of slander, blame not the person who falls but the prompting demon. ~ St. John Climacas
