1 All Saints October 31/November 1, 2018 Scripture #1209 Saint Paul called the recipients of his letters saints, as they were called by God to be set apart in the world. So there can be no better gospel reading on a day that celebrates all the saints than the Beatitudes of Matthew, a self-portrait of Jesus. Jesus was a model for what discipleship should look like, as a disciple follows Jesus. For us, living the Beatitudes, the self-portrait of Jesus is a tall order. But in doing we will find ourselves to be the saints we are called to be. Jesus answer cleverly combines two commandments (Deut 6:4; Lev 19:18): There is no other commandment greater than these. There is nothing to critique. Jesus so embodies the law that no one else has the courage to ask him any questions. But how is the Christian life summed up? Jesus words are meant for us too. If only we love God and love our neighbor as ourselves. 8 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 24/25, 2018 Scripture #1192 The scene is between Jesus and Pilate. Jesus claims he is a king. Pilate, vested with the power to execute, debates the meaning of truth. He doesn t see the incarnation of truth, the King of Kings, standing before him. In Pilate s blindness, he will put him to death as King of the Jews. What Pilate said in mockery was utterly true. As Jesus underwent death before his exaltation, so must we.
