I Meditate Africa is a FREE campaign promo ng peace in Africa, encouraging the use of medita on as a mainstream peace building block for the con nent. "On Africa s 50th Anniversary of unifica on in 2013, an es mated people from 23 African countries, 30 African ci es and 54 Interna onal countries were led into the largest peace medita on for Africa, with noted humanitarian Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. 3 AFRICAN LEADERS AND MEDITATION NELSON MANDELA & MEDITATION Former President & renowned Peace Ambassador, Nelson Mandela was held in prison for over 27 years, emerging to become arguably the world's most loved statesman. His deep and overflowing love for all of humanity has brought all South Africa's diverse peoples together as one na on. Graca Machel, Sri Chinmoy and Nelson Mandela His advice reflected his own strict self discipline in jail: ""You may find that the cell is an ideal place to learn to know yourself, to search realis cally and regularly the processes of your own mind and feelings. In judging our progress as individuals we tend to concentrate on external factors such as one s social posi on, influence and popularity, wealth and standard of educa on. but internal factors may be even more crucial in assessing one s development as a human being: honesty, sincerity, simplicity, humility, purity, generosity, absence of vanity, readiness to serve your fellow men quali es within the reach of every soul are the founda on of one s spiritual life. at least, if for nothing else, the cell gives you the opportunity to look daily into your en re conduct to overcome the bad and develop whatever is good in you. Regular medita on, say of about 15 minutes a day before you turn in, can be frui ul in this regard. You may find it difficult at first to pinpoint the nega ve factors in your life, but the tenth a empt may reap rich rewards. Never forget that a saint is a sinner that keeps on trying. 4 AFRICAN LEADERS AND MEDITATION FORMER PRESIDENT JOACHIM CHISSANO ON MEDITATION The former president of Mozambique, Joachim Chissano, was a rebel leader who came to power as a president a er a devasta ng civil war. He learnt TM medita on in 1992, and quickly came to understand the vast benefits of medita ng every day. He encouraged his family, his cabinet ministers, and his wider government to meditate. He further encouraged under his presidency for all military and police personnel to meditate daily for 20 minutes. 5 WHY MEDITATION AS A PEACE BUILDING BLOCK? The ques on is Why Not. Medita on is the art of bringing deep rest into the mind and thereby allowing the nervous system to refresh and rejuvenate. Medita on has been a part of many ancient cultures, and has undergone a renaissance by the new age modernist as the tool of choice to achieve relaxa on, peace, improved health, increased produc vity and clarity for the mind. 500 studies from over 200 Universi es in 33 countries scien fically validate both the beneficial effects of medita on, and how mass medita on improves the quality of life for everyone.
