1 Kahului Hongwanji Buddhist Temple OCEAN Volume 6, Issue 9 Path of Entrusting - Recite the Nembutsu September 2012 ALOHA! From Reverend Ai Hironaka, Minister-in-Charge On behalf of my family and me, I would like to express our greetings to each of the Nembutsu Sangha of Kahului Hongwanji Mission and the community. I am Reverend Ai Hironaka, resident minister of Lahaina Hongwanji Mission. My wife is Megumi and my children are eight-year-old daughter Kokoro, five-year-old son Hoken, three-year-old daughter Ayumu, and sixteen-month-old Minori. Due to shortage of ministers here in Hawaii Kyodan, I have been assigned to Kahului Hongwanji Mission as minister-in-charge effective June 1. I am very happy and honored to be able to serve Kahului Hongwanji Mission succeeding Reverend Jeffrey D. Soga. I understand that Rev. Soga was very popular with members and this community. I do not know how much I can help and work for you, your temple and this community, but, I will try my best. Since I am new to Kahului Hongwanji, I am asking for your help and support. I hope I will meet each of you at the temple and share the teachings of Shinran Shonin. MAHALO NUI LOA Namo Amida Butsu President s Corner On Sunday, August 5, an all-too-frequent event happened a mass shooting. This time it was in Oak Creek, Wisconsin and six members of the Sikh religion were killed by an individual who reportedly was a white supremacist. The following information is taken from the Los Angeles Times, August 6, written by reporter Kim Murphy. The pain of tragedy seems always to be accompanied by a search for a compensating story of courage. In Oak Creek, there are two such accounts. The public has seized on Murphy (Lt. Brian Murphy, a classic New York-style cop with more than two decades on the streets) and Satwant Singh Kaleka, a deeply religious native of India who came to the U.S. as an impoverished immigrant and made his way up buying gas stations. (Kaleka was killed and Murphy was shot nine times but expected to survive.) Although critically wounded, Lt. Murphy waved on other police officers who came to help him to go and help the other victims. Satwant Singh Kaleka, a 65-year-old father, was killed as he confronted the gunman with a butter knife, keeping him away from the temple kitchen where his wife and other temple followers were. Amardeep S. Kaleka, 34, of Los Angeles said his father had always believed strongly that America was going to be a place of new opportunities for him, his wife, and his two boys. The family arrived from India s Punjab region in the early 1980s. Kaleka told of how his father worked at a family member s gas station, then started working a third shift for an uncle, putting in 18 hour days. Then his father rented a gas station, then owned one, and ended up with eight gas stations. All this by working hard. (Continued on next page)

2 Volume 6, Issue 9 OCEAN Page 2 President s Corner (Continued from previous page) When the sons complained about discrimination, their father put a large American flag on their front lawn. When they commented about how large the flag was, their father responded by saying they were Americans now and they needed to realize the American dream by studying hard, getting an education, and putting that knowledge to work. Kaleka went on to say that his father was instrumental in building the new Sikh temple. He used much of his earnings from the gas stations. Twenty four other community members put up their houses as collateral for the property. I ve written at some length about the human story behind this tragedy. So many facets of this story resonated in me there are so many similarities in this story of these immigrants from India and the immigrants (our families) who came to Hawaii. There was the hope for a better life. There were the unbelievably difficult sacrifices and hard work. There was the emphasis on education. And there was the belief in a religion and the commitment to build a temple. This story held true and is still holding true for all the immigrants to Hawaii, no matter what country they come from and no matter what religion they follow. Herein lies the common thread that connects all of us. We are all members of the same human race. We are all connected to each other in tangible and intangible ways. And what happens thousands of miles away and decades of years apart, still impacts on us. John Donne ( ) was an English poet and a Protestant priest. Hundreds of years later, the poem he wrote still has a connection for each and every one of us. No man is an island, Entire of itself. Each is a piece of the continent, A part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less. As well as if a promontory were, As well as if a manor of thine own Or of thine friend s were. Each man s death diminishes me, For I am involved in mankind. Therefore, send not to know For whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee. Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Jew, Buddhist, people of all other religions and people who are atheists and agnostics we are human beings; we are all the same. ````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Bishop Eric Matsumoto recently sent a special letter asking all temples and all members to remember the victims of this tragedy. He also asked that we take a moment to reflect and consider what we may be able to do to reduce the possibility of such an incident from happening in the future. At Kahului Hongwanji, a letter written by a 10-year-old Sikh girl was read at the August 11 temple service. Please read the Peace Day entry in the Honpa Hongwanji report. This is an important event and its significance should be maximized so the message of PEACE can become a reality. In gassho, Janet

5 Volume 6, Issue 9 OCEAN Page 5 Buddhist Women s Association Thank you to all of the BWA members and their families for making the KHM activities successful. This quote by Ruth Tabrah reiterates kokua and wisdom: To spread the dharma is, essentially, the mission of each Buddhist and has been so since Sakyamuni Buddha decided to turn the wheel of the law by sharing the truth of his enlightenment with others. Buddhists are simply carrying on the working of Amida s Vow, in which wisdom and compassion is realized as the fundamental basis of all existence, and buddhahood enlightenment the unconditional endowment of every one and everything thoughout the universe. (Tabrah wrote the introduction in a book titled Memoirs of a Buddhist Woman Missionary in Hawaii.) The Kona Hongwanji BWA members attended our Obon festivities on both nights. They enjoyed a fabulous meal on Saturday night that was organized and prepared by Mabel Domae and Richard Fukumura. The Kona BWA members and their families were amazed with the bon attendance and appreciated the aloha, Maui no ka oi. Undoubtedly, we will meet them again at the Hawaii Federation BWA Assembly in Kona in The KHBWA annual luncheon meeting will be held on Sunday, October 7 at Tiffany s at 11 a.m. Please confirm your attendance with Patsy Saki or call the temple office. The cost of lunch will be $12. The next meeting will be held on Saturday, September 8 at 8:30 A.M. after hosha. 9 Volume 6, Issue 9 OCEAN Page 9 Two Ways to Donate HI5 Recycling Deposits to Kahului Hongwanji 1. As in the past, KHM Jr. YBA recycles bottles and cans generated by the temple activities as part of their own fundraising activities. Those bottles and cans are stored in the gated area behind the minister s residence. If you would like your bottle and can deposits to support KHM Jr. YBA, please drop your bottles and cans off behind the minister s residence at Kahului Hongwanji. 2. Recently Aloha Recycling (headquarters located across VIP s Cash and Carry near the harbor) made an agreement with the county to operate the county recycling centers. Aloha Recycling also offers a fundraising opportunity for registered organizations. Kahului Hongwanji is now registered with Aloha Recycling, so anyone may now donate his/her HI5 bottle and can deposits directly to Kahului Hongwanji at ANY Aloha Recycling location. Simply drop your HI5 bottles and cans at Aloha Recycling and ask the recycling assistants to credit your bottle and can deposits to Kahului Hongwanji. In addition to accepting HI5 bottles and cans, Aloha Recycling also accepts: food cans, aluminum foil, any kind of paper, cardboard, and ANY KIND of plastic container (including plastic bags) EXCEPT Styrofoam. Please help keep these materials out of our land fill and make the land and ocean healthier and safer for future generations. Reduce the amount and toxicity of products and packaging you buy, use and throw away. Reuse the containers and products. Help KHM Bring in Recycling Dollars! Recycle as much as possible and buy products with recycled content. Practice Composting by using natural process (mainly bacteria and fungi) to decompose organic waste such as food scraps and yard trimmings. All of this information is on the EPA web page: It also has a couple of brief comments on household and industrial waste recycling, with links to more information on those topics.
