The performances are held in the morning leaving afternoon for sightseeing. We visit monasteries, sacred sites, bazaars, small villages, enjoying the breath-taking Himalayas and local culture. Darjeeling and Sikkim Pre-Tour We start with arrival in Calcutta and travel overland to Paro via Darjeeling and Sikkim. You are accompanied by our experienced Indian guide through this region up to the Bhutan border where you will be met by our Bhutan driver and guide to take you to Paro. March 12 Day 1: Arrival in Calcutta / Hotel Pipal Tree (near airport) Transfer to hotel. March 13 Day 2: Darjeeling / Hotel Windemere (B,L,D) Transfer to airport for flight to Bagdogra, 6E 530 dep 10:30 arr 11:40. On arrival, you are met by our accompanying escort and drive (approx. 3 hours) to Darjeeling. We shall stop for lunch en-route. Once the summer capital of India. The name Darjeeling is derived from 'Dorje Ling' (place of the thunderbolt). The area is stunning and quaint with its little villages, tiny waterfalls and even tinier toy train track. The tranquil environs of the surrounding hills offer a perfect setting for the tea estates and monasteries. In the afternoon you can stroll the town, hike to nearby peaks or enjoy the hotel facilities. March 14 Day 3: Darjeeling / Hotel Windemere (B, D) In the early dark hours of the morning, we drive one hour to Tiger Hill to see sunrise over the Himalayas. Wait with patience for an unforgettable experience of catching the black night turning lighter, suffusing with dull red, then brilliant orange and bright gold as the sun rises over the peaks of the Kanchenjunga Range (27,500 feet). Return hotel for breakfast. Afterwards we ride the Toy Train one way to Ghoom, departing 10:40 am, arriving 11:30 am (subject to running of the train). It is a treat to arrive at the train station sometime before the departure and watch them prepare the vintage steam engine for the journey. Only about four bogies and a vintage 1st class chair car are attached to this engine which still needs to stop mid way to fill up its tank with water and wait till it heats up enough to make steam. One can climb up the engine for a close inspection, take photos with it and with the driver and the train supervisor. The car will meet us at Ghoom train station and drive approximately 3 kms/20 min to the Monastery at Ghoom. Pemayangtse is situated in West Sikkim, India, at Gyalshing (140 Kms. from Gangtok) and commands an impressive view of Mt. Kanchendzonga. It was originally a small Lhekhang build by Lhatsun Chenpo in the 17th century. Later during the rule of the third Chogyal Chakdor Namgyal, Lhatsun Chenpo's third reincarnate Jigme Pawo extended it and rebuilt the structure. After check-in and lunch we will visit Pemayangtse Monastery and Sangacheoling Monastery. Pemayangtse Monastery belongs to the Nyigma order and all other Nyigma order monasteries in Sikkim are subordinate to it. The monks of Pemayangtse are usually from the leading Bhutia families in Sikkim. There are 108 monks in this monastery. The monastery houses numerous religious idols and other objects of worship, most of which are precious because of their antiquity. On the top floor of the monastery there is a wooden sculpture depicting the Maha Gurus Heavenly Palace "Sanghthokpalri." This masterpiece was completed by the late Dungzin Rimpoche, who took five years to sculpt the piece single-handedly. Sangacheoling Monastery, built in 1697, is also known as the place of secret spells. It has clay statues dating back to the 17th century. The Sangachoeling Monastery is built in a Tibetan style of architecture and houses a sacred three centuries old Buddhist crematorium named Dhuthoe Silwar Tshar. The crematory has become a public crematorium for the people of Buddhist faith. Sangachoeling Monastery has been rebuilt several times over the years, but it still preserves various ancient paintings, accessories and clay statues. The area around Sangachoeling Monastery provides a panoramic view of the Himalayas March 16 Day 5: Gangtok / Hotel Elgin (B,L,D) We will depart at 830 am for the 6-7 hour drive to Gangtok, capital of Sikkim. It has never been easy to get to Sikkim, and even today, a special permit has been secured to allow your entry. For many years, Sikkim was regarded as one of the last Shangri Las of the Himalayan region because of its remoteness, its lovely mountain terrain, ancient Buddhist monasteries and the profusion of flowers. Sikkim was a monarchy and independent Himalayan kingdom. In 1975, it was annexed to India, becoming the 22nd Indian state. En-route we will visit the Bon Monastery, Bon was established in 1980 AD by the late Yung Dung Tsultrim. Bon monastery is a religious pursuit of religion for all the Bon followers. It is an institution where 35 young people are preached about bon teachings. There are only two Bon monasteries in India; one in Himachal Pradesh and the other in the state of Sikkim. The monastery exhibits the fascinating paintings of Bon deities, Bon Demonical Buddha. The chanting of mantras, blowing of conch in the morning, and beating of drums promise to revive everyone's spiritual side. The history of the monastery is derived from a profound respect for nature. Next we visit Buddha Park in Ravangla, developed by the government to promote Sikkim as a pilgrimage destination. A statue of Sakyamuni Buddha was erected in Buddha Park. People from India and across the world come here and seek the blessing of Lord Buddha. The park offers a panoramic view of snow capped mountains, and an ample walkway for visitors to enjoy the serene surroundings and peaceful ambience of the location. There is a meditation center within the park. We will have hot lunch in Ravangla & then drive onward to Pemayangtse. Pemayangtse is located in West Sikkim, India, at Gyalshing (140 Kms. from Gangtok) and commands an impressive view of Mt. This afternoon we drive 24 kms/approx 45 minutes to Rumtek. Rumtek Monastery (aka Rumtek Dharma Chakra Center) is a relatively new monastery. The construction stated in 1962 and was completed in But this is one of the most important monasteries, as it is the main seat of His Holiness Galwa Karmapa, the head of the Kagukpa Sect of Tibetan Buddhism (one of the 4 major Tibetan Buddhist sects). Since the late 1960's, after the arrival of His Holiness the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, the center has housed some of the world's most unique religious scriptures and religious art objects. Traditional in design, it is almost a replica of the original Kagyu headquarters in Tibet. This is also known to be the largest monastery in this part of the country. It is home to a large community of monks who continue to perform the rituals and practices of the Karma Kagyu lineage. A golden stupa contains the relics of the 16th Karmapa. Opposite that building is a college, Karma Shri Nalanda Institute for Higher Buddhist Studies. About 2 km away from the Dharma Chakra Center is the rebuilt 300 year-old Rumtek Monastery, which was originally built by the fourth Chogyal. The 16th Gyalwa Karmapa lived in this monastery until the completion of the Rumtek Dharma Chakra Center. Return to Gangtok for overnight. Paro lies at an altitude of 2280m (7500 feet) above sea level. Before the construction of roads, most of Bhutan's trade came through Paro either from Tibet via Tremo or from the south via Haa. Paro Valley extends from Jumolhari on the Tibetan border to Chuzom, which is the confluence of the Thimphu and Punakha rivers. On arrival check-in to hotel. Take some time to refresh. Afterwards, visit the National Museum, (closes at 5 pm) located above the Dzong in the ancient circular watchtower. The museum consists of six floors dealing with different aspects of Bhutanese culture. A thongdrel is a giant thangkha. Most dzongs have one of their own which they exhibit only once a year or once in three years. We cannot know in advance if it will be shown this year. Viewing it is supposed to help accumulate great merit as well as liberate the viewer from the world of samsara (reincarnation or rebirth in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism and other related religions). The thongdrel is unfurled before dawn and at the first rays of sunshine it is packed away. Afterwards, there are some dances and prayers. Return to hotel for breakfast. Afterwards, we drive one hour to Thimphu. Just 6 km before arrival into Thimphu, we shall stop to visit the 17 th century Simtokha Dzong standing on a lofty ridge. Built by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1627, it is one of the first Dzongs in the country. The site is said to have been chosen to guard over a demoness that had vanished into the rock nearby, hence the name Simtokha ( sinmo meaning demoness and do meaning stone. It now houses the school for Buddhist studies. On arrival, check in to hotel and we ll have lunch. Thimphu is an enchanting blend of the old and new. Our afternoon tour includes: Folk Heritage Museum, gives you a glimpse of the traditional Bhutanese lifestyle, in addition to artifacts from rural households. The Takin (Budorcas Taxicor): is the national animal of Bhutan and also called cattle chamois. This globally rare and endangered animal is admired for its unique physique and agility on steep terrain of Bhutan. According to Lam Drukpa Kuenley (Devine Madman) Takin was created by joining the bones of a goat s head and bones of the cow s body. Thimphu Takins are kept in Motithang Takin Preserve center or Takin Mini Zoo. Changangkha Lhakhang, built in 12th century, is oldest temple in Thimphu. It hovers over a ridge above Thimphu, near Motithang. Lama Phajo Drukgom Zhigpo who came to Bhutan from Ralung in Tibet chose this site to build this lhakhang. The Lhakhang houses Chenrizig: an 11-headed, thousand-armed manifestation of Avolokitesawara as the central statue. The prayer books in this Lhakhang are larger than the usual Buddhist texts. There are large prayer wheels inside the Lhakhang and small ones on the walls outside the lhakhang. Tashicho Dzong: Dzongs are traditionally built without nails or written plans. The dzong houses the monk body in summer and is the seat of government; the king's offices are in this dzong. There is a picturesque cantilever bridge below the dzong. Mar 22 Day 11 Thimphu Full Day Tour / Gyelsa Boutique Hotel (B,L,D) The National Memorial Chorten: A Tibetan style Chorten built in memory of the third king -the father of modern

The statue is situated on top of a hill overlooking the city of Thimphu, it can be accessed by road and is about 15 minutes away from the city s center. You can have a view of Thimphu town. School of Traditional Arts and Crafts: In Bhutan, the traditional arts are known as zorig chusum (zo = the ability to make; rig = science or craft; chusum = thirteen). These practices have been gradually developed through the centuries, often passed down through families with long-standing relations to a particular craft. These traditional crafts represent hundreds of years of knowledge and ability that has been passed down through generations. The great 15th century treasure finder (tertön), Pema Lingpa is traditionally credited with introducing the arts into Bhutan. In 1680, Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal ordered the establishment of the school for instruction in the 13 traditional arts. Although the skills existed much earlier, it is believed that the zorig chusum was first formally categorized during the rule of Tenzin Rabgye ( ), the 4th Druk Desi (secular ruler). Guests can visit the school to see the students master the crafts. The students sell the works in a shop nearby to supplement their income. The thirteen traditional arts are: Dezo - Paper Making: Handmade paper made mainly from the Daphne plant and gum from a creeper root. Dozo - Stonework: Stone arts used in the construction of stone pools and the outer walls of dzongs, goenpa (monasteries), stupas, and some other buildings. Garzo - Blacksmithing: The manufacture of iron goods, such as farm tools, knives, swords, and utensils. Shagzo - Woodturning: Making a variety of bowls, plates, cups, and other containers. Shingzo - Woodworking: Employed in the construction of dzongs and goenpa (monasteries) Thagzo - Weaving: The production of some of the most intricately woven fabrics produced in Asia. Trözo - Silver and Goldsmithing: Working in gold, silver, and copper to make jewelry, ritual objects, and utilitarian household items. Tshazo - Cane and Bamboo Work: The production of such varied items as bows and arrows, baskets, drinks containers, utensils, musical instruments, fences, and mats. Tshemazo Needlework: Working with needle and thread to make clothes, boots, or the most intricate of appliqué thangkas (religious wall hangings). If time permits visit: Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory uses traditional methods to produce the authentic Bhutanese paper known as Deh-sho. It is located approximately 1 km from Thimphu City. The factory uses the bark of two tree species, the Daphne tree and Dhekap tree in the manufacture of traditional paper. Visitors can observe the entire process of producing handmade paper using ancient traditional methods that have been practiced for generations. You can even try your hand at this ancient craft and make some paper of your very own as a souvenir. Deh-sho paper was originally used by monasteries for woodblock and manuscript books and also for writing prayer books. The Jungshi paper factory continues to preserve and promote this age-old Bhutanese tradition. It also produces various other products, such as stationery and greeting cards.

6 Mar 23 Day 12 Thimpu-Punakha / Hotel Punatsangchuu Cottages (B,L,D) After breakfast, drive to Punakha, the old capital (3 hrs). After an hour, we arrive at Dochu-la Pass. This is a beautiful spot, but can be windy or foggy at times. There are 108 stupas built by the queen for the well being of the country. Stop here for a cup of tea and enjoy the spectacular view of the eastern Himalayan Mountain Ranges (on a clear day). Once we cross the pass, the road winds down to the warmer valleys of Punakha and Wangdue. Next we stop at Mitsina Village for a minute walk to Chimi Lhakhang. The trail leads downhill passing through local shops on the way. As you descend the gentle slope, the trail cuts through a flat paddy field, then a few shops before making a short climb to Chimi Lhakhang. (Take a hat and prepare yourself for the wind, dust or mud). Anyone who does not wish to walk can be driven. After the whole group has assembled at the temple there will be a short tour of it. One can be blessed by a wooden phallus. This temple was built on a hillock in 1499 by the 14 th Drukpa hierarch, Ngawang Choegyel, after the site was blessed by the divine madman saint Drukpa Kunley who built a chorten on the site. Legend has it that he subdued the demoness of the Dochu La with his magic thunderbolt of wisdom. A wooden effigy of the Lama s thunderbolt is preserved in the Lhakhang. Childless women go to the temple to receive blessing from the saint and pray for progeny. After touring the temple, we all drive back to the start of the walk where we ll enjoy lunch with the beautiful view of the valley. Then, a 25 minute drive brings us into Punakha, the old capital of Bhutan and is also presently the winter residence for the Central Monastic Body. It is a climatically a warmer valley than Paro and Thimphu. Upon arrival, we visit the majestic Punakha Dzong situated on an island in the middle of the river at the confluence of the Pho Vhu and Mo Chu Rivers. It was built by Zhabdrung (Shabdrung) Ngawang Namgyal in 1637 and is the second oldest and second largest dzong in Bhutan. Punakha Dzong has undergone flooding from a glacial lake high above in the mountains of Lunana, which periodically has broken through its barriers; and has been ravaged by fire, but has stood on its remarkable site since the 17th C. The flash flood of October 1994 caused a great deal of damage, but miraculous spared the statue of Lord Buddha. It is a six-storied structure with a central tower or Utse at an average elevation of 1,200 metres (3,900 ft) with a scenic, mountainous background. The materials used in building the Dzong consisted of compacted earth, stones and timber in doors and windows. The Dzong was constructed as an embodiment of Buddhist values. The three-story Machhen Lhakhang is a fine example of traditional architecture, crafted from cypress with four intricately embossed entrance pillars decorated in gold and silver, the inside walls are covered with elaborate murals depicting the teaching of the Buddha. The Chorten contains the Kudung and is adorned with precious jewels. It took twenty craftsmen four years to construct. The first King of modern Bhutan was crowned in Punakha Dzong. Punakha Dzong remained the administrative center and the seat of the Government of Bhutan until 1955, when the capital was moved to Thimphu. In 2011, the wedding of the 5th King was held in this fortress. Transfer to hotel. Mar 24 Day 13 Punakha- Gangtey (Phobjikha Valley) (approx. 3 hrs drive) / Hotel Dewachen (B,L,D) This morning, those of you who want more activity, we ll depart at 8 am driving 12 km north of Punakha and hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten (your guide will give you a more detailed description of the hike). Optionally, enjoy an independent morning; our guide will give you suggestions if you like. Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten is a fine example of Bhutanese architecture and artistic traditions. An hour hike to the Chorten, through a moderately inclined trail surrounded by pine trees, this site offers beautiful view of the

7 Punakha Valley. The Chorten built to remove negative forces and promote peace, stability and harmony in the changing world dominates the upper Punakha Valley with commanding views across the Mo Chhu and up towards the mountainous peaks of Gasa and beyond. The Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten stands out on a beautiful ridge above the Punakha valley. This 4-storey temple was built by Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck as per the Holy Scriptures and took 9 years to complete it. This temple has been dedicated for the well being of the kingdom, its people and all sentient beings. In the late morning, about 11 am, we ll depart on the drive to Phobjikha Valley, a glacial valley located on the western slopes of the Black Mountain at an altitude of 9840 feet above the sea level. It is the winter home to the rare black-necked crane that migrate from high plateaus of Tibet in late fall to escape harsh winters. There are also muntjak (barking deer), wild boar, sambar, Himalayan black bear, leopard and red fox. The valley is a designated conservation area and borders Black Mountain National Park. Just before entering the valley we stop for lunch at a place mid-way called Nobding. Then, we cross a small pass and descend into Gangtey town. Our hotel is about 30 minutes further into the valley. Gangtey is a beautiful village at an altitude of 3000m. Rest of the afternoon/evening at leisure. Mar 25 Day 14 Gangtey / Hotel Dewachen (B,L,D) This morning we ll visit Gangtey Goempa, one of the oldest and most important seats of the Nyingmapa school of Buddhism, dating to 17 th century and associated with renowned teacher Terton Pema Lingpa. Gyalse Pema Thinlay built a small temple in 1613, which was later built into the larger Gompa by the 2nd reincarnation Tenzin Legpai Dhondrup in the form of a dzong. Ten monks reside at the monastery. We then enjoy a walk, carrying picnic lunch. We will drive 5 minutes to the entrance of the town. The walk starts from the mani stone wall just north of and above Gangety Goempa. The trail descends through flower meadows to Semchubara village and into an open valley past the chortens into the edge of the forest before descending to a square Chorten and the Khewang Lhakhang and village. Walk around the village, interact with the local people. This will be an opportunity for us to come in closer contact with the local folks, observing their way of living. The trail ends by the meandering Chhu Nap (Blak River). From here we cross over the metal bridge to the community school. The car will be waiting for us here. From here we drive ten minutes to the Black Necked Crane Information Centre located on the edge of the forest and wetland along the main road of Phobjikha Valley. It has an observation room equipped with high power telescope and spotting scopes for catching the best view of the cranes. The centre also offers display information that outlines the natural and cultural history of the area. There is a small gift shop, which sells handicrafts produced by the local people that local people can benefit from ecotourism. Return to our hotel, approx. 10 minutes drive. The rest of the afternoon is independent. Relax and enjoy the delightful surroundings of Phobjikha Valley. Mar 26 Day 15 Gangtey-Trongsa (120 km, approx. 5 hrs) /Yangkhill Resort (B,L,D) We depart at 8 am for the drive east to Trongsa over Pele La pass (3,420m) on the Black Mountain range. En-route we visit the beautiful Chendebji Chorten a stone Buddhist monument in the Nepalese style (modeled after the Swayambhunath Stupa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kathmandu). It is built in a style unusual for Bhutan, with painted eyes facing the four directions. The Chorten was erected in the 18th century by a Tibetan lama to cover the remains of an evil spirit that was subdued at this spot. The imposing Trongsa Dzong can be viewed across a deep canyon to signal your approach to the town around a curving road. Trongsa is the ancestral home of Bhutan's ruling dynasty. Trongsa is the ancestral home of the Bhutanese Royal Family and the dzong there is an exquisite masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture. The watch tower overlooks the entire valley of Mangde Chhu. Transfer to hotel. Rest of afternoon/evening at leisure. Mar 27 Day 16 Trongsa-Bumthang / Hotel Swiss Guesthouse or Yurgharling (B,L,D)

8 This morning we visit Trongsa Dzong, a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture and the largest Dzong in Bhutan. It is the location where the institution of monarchy in Bhutan began. The foundations of Trongsa Dzong were laid in the 16th century and there are now 22 temples in the complex. Backing on to the mountain and built on several levels, the Dzong fits narrowly on a spur that sticks out into the gorge of the Mangde River and overlooks the routes south and west. The view from the Dzong is spectacular and one can see across the impressive landscape for many miles. The Dzong is built in such a way that no matter what direction a traveller came from, he was obliged to pass the Dzong. This helped to augment its importance as it thus had complete control over all east - west traffic. In former times, nothing could escape the vigilance of its watchmen. The Ta - Dzong, an ancient Watch Tower of the Trongsa Dzong is located on top of a steep hill about 1 km. beyond the Trongsa Dzong. We also visit the Ta Dzong Museum housing an incredible collection of historical artifacts of the Royal Family and a range of traditional armor used by the Bhutanese soldiers. Lunch at the hotel restaurant and then drive to Bumthang (approx. 2 hrs), one the most spectacular valleys in Bhutan and also the spiritual and historical heartland of the country. It is a magnificent drive with many waterfalls. The road winds steeply up to Yo Yutung La Pass (3,400m) before descending down through dense coniferous forest to Chummey Valley. We pass thru the village of Rukubji; then pass Chume Village, known for its yathra weaving and delightfully woven embroidered cloth. Mar 28 Day 17 Bumthang (Jakar) / Hotel Swiss Guesthouse or Yurgharling (B,L,D) Bumthang, often referred to as the cultural heartland of Bhutan, is the general name given to a complex of four valleys - Chumey, Choekhor, Tang and Ura with altitude varying from 2,600 m to 4,000 m. It is home to many prominent Buddhist temples and monasteries. Enjoy a full day touring. Visit Jakar Dzong (Fortress of the White Bird), the administrative center of the valley. Built by Minjur Tenpa, the third Druk Desi (temporal ruler appointed by Shabdrung) in 1646 A.D., it is probably one of the biggest Dzongs in Bhutan with the surrounding walls about 1 km. in circumference. We ll visit several ancient and important monasteries such as: Jambey Lhakahang, one of the oldest monasteries dating from the introduction of Buddhism in Bhutan; Tamshing Lhakhang, a treasure house of interesting religious Buddhist paintings; Tamshing Monastery - one of the most sacred Nyingmapa monasteries; Kurie Lhakhang - built on the site of Guru Rimpoche s meditation site. We will also visit Bumthang Swiss farm and the Mebar Tso (the burning lake where the treasure revealer Pema Lingpa discovered Buddhist treasures). Mebar Tso is considered one of the important pilgrimage spots. An optional short day hike can also be arranged for those interested in greater physical activity. Mar 29 Day 18 Bumthang-Ura-Bumthang (50 km/2.5 hrs each way) / Hotel Swiss Guesthouse or Yurgharling (B,L,D) Today we will venture off the usual tourist route to visit the isolated village of Ura in the beautiful central valley. It is a 48 km/approx 1.5 hr drive. The road climbs through amazingly open countryside, only occasionally running into forest. Sheep pastures line the road up to 20 km. behind the southern tip of the Tang Valley. The road crosses Ura-la pass (3,600m), on the approach to which there is a magnificent view of Mt. Gangkar Puensum. Villages in Ura have clustered houses, which is quite unusual in Bhutan. Above Ura village (3,100m) there is a new temple dedicated to Guru Rimpoche. Inaugurated in 1986, it contains a huge statue of the Guru and remarkable wall paintings of the cycle of his teachings. Within the last 25 years Ura has been transformed from a marginal community to a prosperous valley. We shall arrange a meeting with a lama as well as a visit to a local school.

9 Mar 30 Day 19 Fly Bumthang- Paro / Hotel Olathang (B,L,D) Transfer to the airport for the flight to Paro KB 1001, dep 12:45, arrives 13:20. (Tues, Thurs, Sat. Flight schedule subject to change.) Please note: if this flight is cancelled due to weather conditions, we will drive to Paro (approx hours on a new smooth road). We ll take breaks of course. Transfer to hotel and lunch at a local restaurant. The afternoon is independent. Mar 31 Day 20 Paro / Hotel Olathang (B,L,D) To beat the crowds and heat, we start at 7 am to Satsam Chorten (15 min drive) and hike to Taktsang Monastery. Taktsang Lhakhang (aka Tiger s Nest Temple ) is perched on a rock face and is revered by the Bhutanese as Guru Padmasambhava (who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan) and is said to have flown on the back of a tiger to the site to meditate. The climb up to Taktsang takes about two hours. Every Bhutanese hopes to make at least one pilgrimage here in their lifetime. The well-maintained path passes through blue pines, oaks and rhododendrons. From a number of places during the climb you can get glimpses of the monastery, clinging to the cliff with no visible approach. Near a cluster of prayer flags, to the right of the path, is Taktsang Café, offering a magnificent view of the 3000 foot-high cliff supporting the monastery. Enjoy tea and snacks at the Taktsang café. You can descend from here or continue. If you decide to go further: Before the final approach, a bend in the road leads down to a small bridge. A few paces ahead is a hermit s hut carved inside a rock. From here, a short but steep climb takes us to the door of Taktsang. Near the entrance is the cave in which the well-known Guru Rinpoche or Padmasambhava meditated for three months in the 18th century and converted the people to Buddhism. There is an option to have a pony ride to the view point, which takes approx 1 hour (extra cost/pay direct). Your guide will walk with you alongside the pony. The path to the view point is like a track road with gradual ascent and a mix of mild and steep slopes. The trail is quite wide and can easily accommodate two horses side-by-side. On the return you must walk downhill; the ponies are not permitted to take riders down. NOTE: Drugyal Dzong the ruins of the Dzong that defended the valley in the 17th century from Tibetan Invasion; is closed to visitors indefinitely. On the return to Paro town, we stop at the Kyichu monastery built from the 7th century. This is one of the oldest monasteries in Bhutan built by the great Tibetan King Songsten Gyepo and the main statue is of the Future Buddha, which is similar to the main Buddha statue in the Potala Palace in Lhasa Tibet. Transfer to hotel (15 min 11 km). Rest of day is free. April 1 Day 21 Depart.
