There is one word that must never be spoken, and it is the only crime that receives the death penalty. Chapter 3 No person may be smarter than Scholars Chapter 4 Thinking things not aligned with society - Such thoughts as these are forbidden (Rand 56). Chapter 5 It is considered evil for people to look at or ask about their appearance. Chapter 5 9. How does Equality think the World Council of Scholars will feel about his discovery? He thinks his gift is so grand that the members will forgive his transgressions and reassign him to the Scholars. 10. What revelations about himself does Equality have in this chapter? He is proud of himself and recognizes his individual contribution to society. He cares about his body whereas before he didn t. Chapter 2 2. Describe Liberty Slender, dark eyes, not fearful, golden hair, white tunic for clothes - unlike other women. 3. Why is Equality bothered by Liberty s age? Women are sent to mate at 18. She is close, and he doesn t want her to be with someone else. 4. What odd behavior do Fraternity and Solidarity exhibit? Why do think they behave this way? Fraternity cries for no reason and Solidarity screams in the middle of the night from terror. 5. What does Equality notice about the Transgressor? They are happy and content though they are burning to death. They bravely walk to their punishment and don t appear to hurt. Their eyes speak to Equality. Chapter 3 6. How does one find the earth s secrets? Must seek them out 7. What power has harnessed? Electricity Chapter 4 8. What do the new names of Liberty and Equality reveal about their character traits? The Golden One suggests she is beautiful and deserving of such a special name. Gold is rare and precious like her in Equality s eyes. Why does the World Council of Scholars consider the glass box evil? 8. What bold move does Equality make when the Scholars mention the box will be destroyed? Chapter 8 9. 6 Anthem Chapters 6-8 Chapter 6 1. When the Council of the Home demands to know where Equality has been because he is tardy, what is his response? We will not tell you (Rand 63). 2. How does the Council plan to force Equality to admit where he has been? Beat him until he confesses. 3. What is Equality s only response when the plan is enforced? The light. 4. At the end of this chapter, Equality plans to go get the box from the tunnel and present it to the Scholars. Thus, why you think he endures the punishment if he plans to reveal the truth anyway? Answers will vary maybe he doesn t want to tell them because he knows they will destroy it before he can get to the tunnel himself. Maybe he wants to see to what lengths he will go to in order to protect the box. Other answers are possible. Chapter 7 5. How does the World Council of Scholars react to Equality s gift? Afraid of the light, they run to the wall and cower together. 6. What does the light seem to symbolize? How is the Scholars response to it ironic? Knowledge Scholars are supposed to seek knowledge, but these men are scared of it and run away from it. 7. Why does the World Council of Scholars consider the glass box evil? It was made by one man and not by all men. It will make the lives of men easier so that they don t have to work so hard, and their only purpose should be to serve one another. It will put the candle makers without a job. 8. What bold move does Equality make when the Scholars mention the box will be destroyed? He grabs it, breaks a window like a boss, jumps to the ground, and runs to the Uncharted Forest to escape. Chapter 8 9. How does Equality view nature in this chapter? He feels welcomed by the trees, he basks in the sunlight, he kills and cooks a bird which brings him great pride that he did it himself, and he enjoys the sky, bushes, and stream. 10. What are some of Equality s newly found freedoms in the Uncharted Forest? He doesn t have to wake up to an alarm clock. He can do whatever he wishes without being on a strict schedule. He can cook his own food. He can look at his own appearance and not feel guilty.
7 Anthem Chapters 9-12 Chapter 9 1. How does the Golden One compare Equality to the brothers in society? 2. What revelations about joy and happiness does Equality have in this chapter? Chapter What is different about the house Equality and the Golden One find? 4. What can you infer about the Unmentionable Times? Chapter What pronouns are used in this chapter that have not been used so far in the book? 6. What words are considered holy by Equality ? 7. What word is now considered evil? 8. What are some components of Equality s newfound beliefs? Chapter Why do the new names Equality gives himself and the Golden One fit them so well? 10. What is Equality s plan after he has learned from the books?
8 Anthem Chapters 9-12 Chapter 9 1. How does the Golden One compare Equality to the brothers in society? Equality eyes show fire mouth is Brothers no fire or hope mouth is soft and hard/determined head held high walk proudly humble (Rand 83) they cringe (83), crawl humbly 2. What revelations about joy and happiness does Equality have in this chapter? To be with a woman is a beautiful thing, not shameful as he felt when he was with his society. He always knew he was breaking the laws, but he did not doubt them; now he doubts those laws. He has been taught that man alone is evil but together with brothers is good; however, he finds pleasure in being without his brothers. Working for brothers makes one happy according to his society; yet he is happier when he discovered power all by himself. Chapter What is different about the house Equality and the Golden One find? It was made for a maximum of 12 people, it has mirrors to show their images, lots of light, lightbulbs, multicolored clothing, and a room of books with printed pages. 4. What can you infer about the Unmentionable Times? Answers will vary maybe that the people had inventions, electricity, and advancements already. The society seems to have gone backwards when it changed from individuality to a unity-only approach to life. They went from electricity back to candles. They went from freedom to unified rituals. Chapter What pronouns are used in this chapter that have not been used so far in the book? I and my 6. What words are considered holy by Equality ? I will it (95). 7. What word is now considered evil? We 8. What are some components of Equality s newfound beliefs? Man is his own person to choose the friends he wants. Man s happiness is the most important aspect of life. Man works for himself and doesn t have to share with others if he doesn t want to. Man lives for himself and doesn t ask of others, nor do they ask of him. Man s will is his own god. Chapter Why do the new names Equality gives himself and the Golden One fit them so well? Prometheus is a Greek god who brought light to man, and Gaea was the mother of the gods. Equality looks at men as their own gods. 10. What is Equality s plan after he has learned from the books? He will travel back to his former city and get others who seemed unhappy. They will go with him and start a new history built on the philosophy of freedom and independence.
