At this January meeting, the contrasting worldviews of biblical creationism and naturalism are compared and matched against reality, by popular author and speaker Dr. Donald Chittick*. Questions discussed include the following examples: How accurate is astronomical time? Where in the universe are we? Are space and time absolute? Do celestial motions fit better with heliocentrism (the sun is the center of the solar system) or do they fit better with geocentrism (the Earth is the center of the entire universe)? How does Scripture relate to heliocentrism and geocentrism? Answers and observations relating to these questions are offered by Dr. Chittick, in a most thought-provoking session. *Donald E. Chittick holds a Ph. D. in Physical chemistry from Oregon State University, and has taught at the University of Puget Sound and George Fox College. A contributor to several books and periodicals, he has lectured on the creation / evolution topic throughout the past two decades, both in the United States and abroad. As an inventor, he holds several U.S. and foreign patents and is active in the area of alternative fuels. For more than thirty years, the Lord has granted Don and Donna Chittick the privilege of serving Him in the area of showing the total accuracy of the Holy Bible. 2 Science books, programs, and other media tell us that we know the universe is billions of years old. We re told that it formed all by itself in a Big Bang event, with no Creator being involved. But here s what they aren t telling you. The secular model actually predicts that most of the things we see in space, including stars, galaxies, and the planets of our Solar System... cannot exist. The secular model fails to explain the heavens. Rather, the heavens declare the glory of God. 3 Dinosaurs have inspired countless myths and legends, but where do the facts meet with the Bible? Paleontologists assert that dinosaurs went extinct 65 million years ago, long before humans ever walked the Earth. But this view is in stark contrast to the creation account in Genesis, which states that both humans and land animals were created on the same day. This presentation from popular speaker Chris Ashcraft* provides a summary of the naturalist perspective of dinosaurs, and then looks to the Bible for insight into their true history. Are dinosaurs mentioned in the Bible? Were they also placed on Noah s ark? If so, why are they now extinct? These and other key issues are answered in this presentation. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in biology from Wayland Baptist University in 1989, a Master of Science in biology from Texas Tech University in 1996, and a Master of Education from the University of WA in Chris was a research technician for 12 years, specializing in plant tissue culture and genetic transformation technology, and is now a high school science teacher at North Sound Christian School where he teaches Biology, Chemistry, and Creation Apologetics. 4 Any fossil which crosses two or more sedimentary layers is called a poly (many) strate (strata) fossil. Polystrate -fossils are found all over the world. Fossil trees are very common in coal mines, for example, and other types of polystrate fossils can be found in various locations and situations of sedimentary strata. These geological and paleontological evidences are compelling arguments against uniformitarianism and millions of years. The most plausible alternative general explanation is that these fossils were rapidly buried; which is in line with the biblical creationist view that most of the sedimentary layers of the world were laid down during the Genesis Flood. In this PowerPoint presentation by JD Mitchell*, a number of examples of polystrate fossils are examined, including fossilized trees, complete forests and several kinds of animals. Possible explanations for these types of fossils found in thick as well as thin multi-layers are provided based upon biblical creationist presuppositions. Mitchell is a registered professional engineer in Oregon and Washington and has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of WA. He has also completed his Master of Biblical Studies from Master s Graduate School of Divinity. He is principal consulting engineer for Crane & Hoist Engineering of Gresham, OR, is director of the Institute for Creation Science of Oregon, and speaks, writes and performs research regarding the creation versus evolution controversy as a part of his creation ministry (Creation Engineering Concepts). JD has been studying the scientific and biblical evidence regarding the creation vs. evolution controversy since 1984 when he was converted from a theistic evolutionist to a born again Christian. 5 The Creation viewpoint has been censored out of the mainstream institutions (public schools, media and government) and even mocked and ridiculed by some of those who run them. For many years, June DSA speaker Dennis Marcellino* investigated what the truth is, about life and the best way to approach it (which included 19 approaches to truth and lifestyle before coming to the Bible 29 years ago). He found that when science, logic, experience and statistics are taken to their limits, they end with the realization of the reality of God and full accuracy of the Bible, and that the Bible is the greatest technical manual for how to live one s life. So now that information and its supporting detail has to be shared with the mainstream while demonstrating that what those institutions use to back their positions has many errors. His attempts to do this have been while using simple science and objective logic to have debates with atheists and secular humanists, write books, make presentations, create DVDs, and appear in the media. In this presentation Dennis discusses how to debate with atheists (which he recently did with an atheist leader in the Portland area), and also how to present and defend Christianity in an intelligent yet friendly way with family, friends, co-workers and even to oneself. 6 This 70 minute excursion down many miles of the Deschutes River is a great introduction to this worthwhile field trip. Aboard raft and in camp, you will experience this 2011 two-day event from a rafter s viewpoint. The movie starts with the group gathering in Maupin, Oregon, transport to the river (through the famous narrow tunnel) and an introductory talk on the geology and biology of the region. After river safety demos, we enter the rafts, floating past interesting wildlife, geology and the beautiful scenery of the Deschutes River region. Various rapids are encountered, and seen from on land and from the very wet front end of a raft! Campsite scenes, include the expert outfitter company cooks at work, weary rafters getting ready for nitefall and the beautiful riparian sunset scenery. Then all are topped by a stunning near-full moon. Morning music, breakfast sausages and cliff swallows are next experienced. Certain daring rafters opt to float through some giant waves before lunch, followed by the final day s drift through more rapids and dramatic basalt canyons. 7 If you ve ever taken biology, you have heard of the citric acid cycle, the Krebs cycle, or even photosynthesis. But do you realize how unnatural these are? There are two natures : the physical nature and biologic nature. Physical nature comprises matter, the forces that act on matter and the flow of energy throughout our material universe. Forces like gravity, electronic or magnetic fields or nuclear fields confine the flow of energy and particles. Energy can be in packets like photons, or energy of motion (kinetic) or stored energy (potential) or energy of order (entropy). Energy flow in chemical interaction is defined in term of enthalpy and entropy. All of these physical nature dynamics can be demonstrated in laboratories and have been formulated in terms of laws by which matter interacts. Biologic Nature follows all the rules of physical nature, but in a highly organized and constrained way that forces conditions and reactions to take place that usually would be difficult to do in normal environments. This talk by popular speaker Dr. Mark Deming* focuses on the use and storage of energy in the cell and how amazing that process is. He maintains that if you step back from the pure memorization of a lot of weird molecules and the bookkeeping of ATP and NADH and look at the details of the process, any reasonable person would be forced to conclude that naturalistically it should not be here. Yet it must have been in place since the earliest living organisms around 3.8 billion years ago (by evolutionist belief) since it is shared by virtually every living organism that exists today. Mark does not get lost in highly technical jargon, as he endeavors to make this entertaining and presented in a way that is accessible to a general audience! 8 The six days of creation are they literal? How can we know? Why does it matter? aren t Genesis chapters 1 through 11 just oral tradition similar to the Gilgamesh Epic or the Greek stories by Homer? 9 This October presentation examines the amazing anatomical features of bees and the even more astounding instincts they possess which enable them to navigate, communicate distant food sources, construct the geometrically perfect honeycomb, and function as sanitation, air conditioning and heating engineers for their hive city. Colorful photos and animation clips are used in this program by popular speaker Dr. Thomas Kindell*, illustrating incredible bee abilities. For example, bees manage to routinely solve the traveling salesman problem, in which a subject must determine the shortest route between multiple destinations in order to conserve energy. But researchers don t know how the bees do it with a brain the size of a grass seed. Bees clearly look as though they have been expertly designed, as nature by itself could never put together such intricate programs. Even if it could, where would it obtain the power needed to insert them into the exact animals that require them? However, through his exposure to the scientific case for creation, he became a zealous creationist. 10 The solar system is littered with hundreds of thousands (or perhaps millions) of pieces of rock, metal, and ice. Most of it lies in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, or in the vast reaches of space beyond Neptune, but debris can be found almost anywhere among the planets. Comets and meteorites have inspired or frightened people for millennia, and have even been proposed as the primary cause for the greatest catastrophe our world has ever seen: the Genesis flood. Where did all the debris come from? Did God create it in its present state some 6000 years ago? Is it the remains of protoplanets that never fully formed in some primitive solar nebula? Or could it be, as many creationists and evolutionists have suggested, the remnants of one or more planets that exploded in the distant past? 11 The title of this December talk is a paraphrase of Ronald Reagan s line The trouble with our liberal friends is not that they re ignorant; it s just that they know so much that isn t so. Popular creation speaker Horst Matschukat* documents, through quotes and comments, that evolutionists know a lot of stuff that isn t so. We hear of imaginative theories that are based on non-existing evidence. There are several reasons why we need to address this issue. Students in public schools are fed a continuous stream of misinformation. The media is too biased to provide the public with a balanced view of creationism versus evolutionism. They ll never tell us that Darwin and others expressed serious doubts about their theories. No other theory is allowed to exist, other than evolutionism. If someone dares to voice a creationist view he is silenced or fired. One current example of misinformation is a pamphlet cover that shows an ape with Darwin s face. Inside are ten questions a creationist would supposedly ask. The specious answers, however, all reflect an evolutionist s point of view such as a description of the science fiction punctuated equilibrium theory, claims of many intermediate fossils, and a belief that the eye is a product of time and chance evolution. Horst further explores questions such as: Why is communication between creationists and evolutionists nigh impossible? Why is it so difficult for a creationist to be heard in the public arena? How can Christians operate in a society whose worldview is diametrically opposed to theirs? A retired Project/Construction manager, he became a Christian at 18 years old through the good offices of the Chaplain s Corps US Army. Horst and wife Hilla immigrated to this country in 1960, and have two adult children and three grandchildren. He has developed a series of eight lectures on the subject of origins, emphasizing that he is not a scientist, but one that just talks about readily available information which supports Genesis 1 11 and specifically the verse In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
