RI PRESIDENT S MESSAGE July 2018 D e a r f e l l o w Rotarians, One year ago, your Rotary Internationa l Board of Directors a d o p t e d a n e w vision statement, r e l e c t i n g o u r aspirations for our organization and its future. It reads, "Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves." That simple sentence distills so much of what is essential about Rotary. We unite, because we know that we are far stronger together than we could ever be alone. We take action, because we are not dreamers, but doers. We work to create lasting change that will endure long after our involvement has ended across the globe and in our communities. And perhaps most important of all, we work to create change in ourselves not justbuilding a better world around us, but becoming better people ourselves. A quotation attributed to French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupe ry goes: "If you want to build a boat, don't begin by collecting wood, cutting boards, or assigning tasks. Begin by awakening in the souls of your workers a longing for the vast and boundless sea." Each of us came to Rotary because we had a longing to have an impact, to make a difference, to be part of something larger than ourselves. That desire, that vision for a better world and our role in building it, is what drives us in Rotary. It's what made us become members, it's what motivates us to serve, and it's what led me to choose our theme for this Rotary year: Be the Inspiration. I want to see Rotary Be the Inspiration for our communities by doing work with a transformational impact. It's time to start moving forward, by removing the barriers that are holding us back. Let's make it easier to make adjustments in our clubs or start new clubs that suit different needs. Let's work to strengthen Rotaract and smooth the transition from Rotaract clubs into 3 Rotary. Let's give all Rotarians the lexibility to serve in the ways that work best for them, so that every Rotarian inds enduring value in Rotary membership. Truly sustainable service, the kind of service we strive for in Rotary, means looking at everything we do as part of a larger global ecology. This year, I ask all of you to Be the Inspiration for sustainable service by addressing the impact of environmental issues on our work. The environment plays a key role in all six of our areas of focus, and that role is only becoming greater as the impact of climate change unfolds. It's time to move past seeing the environment as somehow separate from those six areas. Clean air, water, and land are essential for healthy communities and essential for the better, healthier future we strive for. Be the Inspiration and together we can, and we will, inspire the world. Barry Rassin President , Rotary International DISTRICT GOVERNOR'S MESSAGE Fellow Rotarians, Good morning and happy new year. Rotary Events and Programs Important to Your Clubs and Districts Dear fellow Rotarians, I would like to tell you about my personal experience with the Rotary Global Rewards program. After the International Assembly last January, which is a very tiring event for the President-elect, Juliet and I needed a week's break. So with our friends Don and Carolyn, we went to Florida to enjoy the winter sunshine and visit the theme parks in Orlando. I had just received a briefing on the progress of Rotary Global Rewards, so it was fresh in my mind and I went on to the website to see what offers were available in Orlando. As an accountant with Scottish heritage, I enjoy a bargain! It was with delight that I discovered a significant discount offered on entry to the theme parks, so Don make our booking through Rotary Global Rewards. Very simple to do, and a portion of our spending went back to Rotary. The number and the variety of offers are growing all the time, so I recommend to Rotarians that they visit the Global Rewards page or download the Rotary Club Locator app to investigate this interesting program. 5 Rotary's fifth World Polio Day celebration, on 24 October, is an occasion for us to celebrate our progress against polio and look to the future. You can participate by downloading promotional materials and resources to help you plan a successful World Polio Day event. Remember, hosting a World Polio Day event in your community fulfills one of the optional goals for my presidential citation. Be sure to share your plans by registering your event. Our friends and partners in polio eradication, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will co-host our World Polio Day livestreamed event at their headquarters in Seattle, Washington, USA. The event, beginning at 2:30 p.m. PST, will include a global polio status update along with messages from experts and celebrity ambassadors. It will be streamed live and then available for viewing at endpolio.org. I'm also excited to announce that the new Rotary public image campaign, People of Action, is now available in the Brand Center for use by districts and clubs. This campaign helps us with the important task of telling our stories to people outside of our clubs, in the communities we serve. New ads and resources will continue to be posted in the Brand Center over the next several months. I hope you will join me in embracing this campaign and encouraging other Rotarians to do the same. Together, we can show and tell the world we are People of Action, and send a powerful message that resonates across languages and cultures to raise worldwide understanding of Rotary. Lastly, I know many of you have many great initiatives, projects, and information to share with the Rotary world. As such, I'd like to officially invite you to submit a breakout session proposal for the 2018 Toronto Convention. Breakout sessions can inspire attendees, helping them polish their leadership skills and giving them new ideas for projects, fundraising, strengthening membership, and more! Submit your proposal online by Sunday, 1 October Please contact our Learning & Development team with any questions. I hope to see you all in Toronto as we come together as a part of Rotary: Making a Difference. Sincerely, Ian Riseley Rotary International President, ONE ROTARY CENTER 1560 SHERMAN AVENUE EVANSTON, ILLINOIS USA ROTARY.ORG

arrival of the year with the excellent theme BE E INSPIRATION to which I have added a message for our District TO BE E INSPIRATION FOR RENAISSANCE for the Fundamental transformation of lives in our immediate communities and the World at large. Today, 1st day of July 2018, we're presented with opportunities to make the second year of our District's existence memorable neither by touching the stone nor the lower but by touching the souls of the needy in our society. Do you remember the 6 Areas of focus representing the critical needs of the world?. Today we begin a journey to solve problems of the down trodden, there are many problems to solve. After all, we're problem solvers, people of action because Rotary is Humanity in motion. humanity. I invite you this year to work hard and experience the thrill and joy of service. Take advantage of every service opportunities around you and live in the heart of people for ever. My dear friends, for heaven's sake develop yourself, aim high this Rotary year and do not forget to enjoy Rotary. Rotary is a University of it's own, all progress are rooted in education. Fellow Rotarians, I will like to thank you for the much you have given to The Rotary Foundation. Your gifts presented opportunities to create enduring, meaningful changes around the world and to children or people you may never meet. Thank you. Just take a look around you and you will appreciate what am talking about and the need for us to work harder to discover our inner selves. Most of us spent the early part of our lives in our real villages. You will be surprised that mothers still spend hours looking for water for domestic use, work endlessly daily to earn a living which of course is never enough to sustain the family. We have a job here to provide water for our communities and means for growth of economy, provide health facilities, alleviate hunger and improve Humanity. After all humanity is our business. Think of your primary school or the ones nearest your home, you will be astonished at the sight of dilapidated buildings illed with unkempt, half-naked young fellows. sometimes the schools are empty. Education remains the foundation for a healthy society, best weapons against poverty. Our world will be more stable with less illiterates. Now and of course for the next 365 days, we, Rotarians, have the opportunity to BE E INSPIRATION to change things for better in our communities and around the world. We can and we will. The choice we make today speaks volumes tomorrow. Every child deserves a healthy and safe childhood. Rotarians possess the power of freedom and liberation through service to Page 3 Continues 6 R e m e m b e r, a n A P P R E C I AT I O N i s a n APPLICATION for more gifts to The Rotary Foundation. We're looking for 50 MAJOR DONORS, or 500 combination of PHF, PHFSM, PHS, BENEFACTORS. Honestly, Rotarians are already keying into this. DON'T BE LEFT OUT. We must ALL give. 'Giving is not the exclusive right of the rich". As Rotarians, our greatest weapon are PASSION and COMMITMENT. Do give. Give to eradicate POLIO - the number one priority project of The Rotary International. Time is everything, there may never be another time to do good than now. Let's be part of this history, beckoning on us. In accordance with Rotary Principles of Present, Future and Past, I will like to appreciate our PDGs including the one that passed yesterday for their achievements and encourage the future leaders to come on board. Together, we see a World where people unite and take action to create lasting change - across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves. BE E INSPIRATION for RENAISSANCE - positive fundamental transformation. Happy New Year. YEMI OLADOKUN. DISTRICT GOVERNOR, ROTARY INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT 9141.

GLIMPSE AROUND E WORLD OF ROTARY Rotary recognizes Prime Minister Trudeau for Canada's commitment to ending polio T O R O N T O ( J u n e 2 7, ) I n acknowledgment of his government's efforts to achieve a polio-free world, Rotary today presented Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with its Polio Eradication Champion Award at its 109th annual international convention. Justin Trudeau accepts Rotary's Polio Eradication Champion Award from RI President Ian H.S. Riseley. Canada has been a champion in the ight to eradicate polio since 1986, when it became the irst government to formally fund global polio immunization efforts. Canada has provided over CAD $750 million in support of a polio-free world, including a $100 million pledge to global eradication in Earlier this month, Canada, as host of the G7 summit, was joined by G7 leaders in af irming a commitment to polio eradication. Prime Minister Trudeau has committed Canada to remain a strong partner until polio is c o m p l e t e l y e r a d i c a t e d, s a i d R o t a r y International President Ian H.S. Riseley. With the unwavering support of the Prime Minister and the Canadian government and their strong assistance with continued vaccination efforts, I'm con ident we will rid the world of polio. Later this week, Rotary will announce nearly $50.12 million in support for global polio eradication efforts in countries where polio is a threat. Since 1988, Rotary has contributed more than $2.3 billion and countless volunteer hours in the ight to end polio, with Rotary clubs in Canada donating more than $66.6 million towards polio eradication. Rotary members throughout Canada travel regularly to poliothreatened countries to vaccinate children in mass immunization campaigns. To help create awareness and support for the global effort to protect all children from polio, 7 Rotary's international convention will feature two virtual reality videos that will immerse viewers into the lives of those still impacted by the disease, and what it will take to eradicate it worldwide. Polio eradication has been Rotary's top priority since In 1988, Rotary became a leading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, along with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and later, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Since the initiative launched, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 cases in 1988 to just 22 con irmed cases in two countries in About Rotary: Rotarybrings together a global network of community leaders dedicated to tackling the world's most pressing humanitarian challenges. We connect 1.2 million members from more than 35,000 Rotary clubs in almost every country in the world. Their service improves lives both locally and internationally, from helping those in need in their own communities to working toward a polio-free world. Toronto's irst Rotary convention took place 94 years ago, with subsequent conventions in 1942, 1964 and About the Polio Eradication Champion Award: Rotary established the award in 1995 to honor individuals who have made signi icant contributions to the global eradication effort. Prime Minister Trudeau is the third Canadian Prime Minister to receive the award, joining Prime Ministers Jean Chre tien and Stephen Harper. Past recipients also include Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan; Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany; Xavier Bettel, Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Muhammadu Buhari, President of Nigeria; Nevin Mimica, European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development; and Ban Ki-moon, former UN secretary-general.

TIPS ON EVERYDAY LIVING HIDDEN BELIEFS AT KEEP YOU UNHAPPY Are you tired of feeling like you have no joy in your life? Tired of feeling that everybody else has it better than you? Are you ready to experience the happiness, joy, and well-being that you've seen in some people but never experienced yourself? You have hidden beliefs that keep you unhappy. vanishes into thin air. It was never real all along. You rejoice in the relief you feel. You can do this meditation as many times as needed and on any of the hidden beliefs you struggle with. Over time, they will begin to lose their power over you. And it may happen sooner than you think. 2. Other people are better than me And it's time to nally unearth the hidden stories, lies really, that you tell yourself daily. Many of these beliefs about who you are and how the world works are so hidden you're likely scarcely aware of them. But they determine your every thought, emotion, and decision. See if any of these scripts resonate with you, and learn how you can leave them behind once and for all: 1. I don't deserve to be happy Did you grow up in an environment that preached that the desire for happiness is bad? Do you associate happiness with acquiring material things or receiving the attention of others? Have you done something in your life that you believe disquali es you from having happiness, joy, and well-being? Know that all these barriers exist only in your mind. Don't get me wrong, it's a formidable barrier. But it's not one made of stone or concrete. Happiness is literally a thought away. However, you must rst be willing to drop the belief that you somehow don't deserve to be happy. Try this simple meditation. Close your eyes. Imagine yourself holding a heavy stone that represents the belief that you don't deserve to be happy. Feel it weighing on your arms, hurting your back. What's preventing you from simply dropping the stone? The fastest way to torpedo any sense of happiness or wellbeing is to compare yourself negatively with others. This is one of those hidden beliefs that's all too common. While you may have heard that comparing yourself with others should be avoided at all costs, you nd it almost impossible to stop doing so. There's a good reason for that. You're a social being built for relationship with others. Part of how we make sense of our world and our place in it is by comparing ourselves with others. This is natural and normal. The part that compromises our happiness is when we routinely compare ourselves negatively with others. Or, as Steven Furtick says, The reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind-the-scenes with everyone else's highlight reel. In order to drop this belief, when you're tempted to compare yourself negatively with others, transform your negatively toward yourself to genuine feelings of admiration and gratitude. Also be grateful for your own strengths. This way you can recognize the gifts in others without discounting your own gifts. 3. Taking care of myself is sel sh Maybe you feel that holding on to the stone will prevent you from experiencing even more pain maybe the stone dropping on your foot (representing the possibility of feeling guilt or rejection). Yes, there's a possibility of the stone dropping on you but you're ready to take a leap of faith. Imagine yourself releasing the stone. As it falls, instead of dropping to the ground (or on your foot), it 8 This one is closely related to the rst but deserves special attention. The acceptance of healthy self-care has thankfully grown but there are still many holdouts. So many of us are afraid to do anything that even hints of overindulgence or sel shness. Frankly, we're terri ed of the prospect of being labeled as sel sh, self-absorbed, lazy, or hedonistic.

But healthy self-care is none of those. Yes, is true that hedonism will not lead to true happiness, but neither will selfimposed martyrdom. In order to serve others well, you need to ll your own gas tank. Or, in the word of St. Teresa of Calcutta, To keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it So take that well-deserved vacation, buy something nice for yourself, go on a solitary walk in the woods, or take a nap. Let go of the guilt associated with doing things for yourself large and small. When others criticize you, tell them that you're doing it for them as much as you're doing it for yourself. 4. If I do everything right, I'll never experience suffering, pain or injustice You were born to the right parents, grew up in the right neighborhood, hung out with the right friends, married the right person, chose the right career. So when life doesn't turn out quite the way you planned, you feel cheated, despondent, or worse. Though our experience tells us otherwise, we hang on this belief for dear life. It's actually more of a superstition. A way of attempting to ward off the evil spirits of pain and misfortune. Happiness is often associated with having things the way you want them externally. But more lasting happiness and well-being requires that you accept the reality of suffering as a part of life, whether deserved or undeserved. You could instead say I choose to keep a job I hate because I hate the alternative even more. By stating the truth, you maintain your power to choose. You may even determine that the alternative is not as bad as you thought and that quitting is the best choice. Either way, you dispel the belief that you are completely helpless to life's circumstances. You may not have total control of your life, but you do have agency and you have choices. Remembering this will give you a greater sense of well-being. 6. Everything that my mind says is true Your mind is constantly narrating the events of your life. It tells you how you should think and feel about any given situation. The problem that most of us have is that we identify ourselves with the voice and believe everything it says without question. If your mind says you're not smart enough or strong enough, you believe it. If it says you should or shouldn't do something, you believe it. If it says you're worthy or unworthy, you believe it. In order to experience greater happiness, maintain a healthy dose of skepticism about your mind chatter. Always be ready with the question, Is it true? You can do this with any of your thoughts, even positive ones. 7. I cannot share my pain so I don't appear weak Learning to handle misfortune well is hard but not impossible. It starts by challenging the assumption that life is always fair or that it should be. No one, no matter how much good they've done, are guaranteed a free pass in life. While resetting your expectations is a huge step, it also helps to keep things in perspective by remembering that the bad times don't last forever. 5. I don't have any choice This phrase is an ef cient and deadly killer of joy. The path to greater well-being is realizing that you always have choices, even when you feel like don't. The truth is that you make choices every moment of every day. The problem is that most of them are made unconsciously. If a person is miserable at their job, they may say I have no choice but to stay. How will I pay my bills? But you do have a choice and you have made a choice to stay. 9 Yet another reliable hidden belief that keeps you in unhappiness land is the belief that it is better to save face than appear weak. Do you avoid asking help when you need it or struggle to con de in anyone, even close friends? You may be carrying around an unnecessarily heavy load. Part of our strength as social beings is that we don't have to endure the challenges of life alone. Allowing others to help is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength that comes with the willingness to be vulnerable. Happiness, joy, and well-being are all yours for the taking. Now that we've exposed the hidden beliefs, you have a choice. Will you choose status quo? Will you choose to hold on to them. Maybe the answer is yes, but be sure to acknowledge that you're making a conscious choice (see #5). But if you're ready to experience greater happiness and wellbeing, giving up these long-held beliefs will put you on the fast track to experiencing the happiness you've always wanted.
