PRESIDENT S JANUARY MESSAGE M y Dear Inspiration Rotarians, I heartily welcome you all from the Xmas and New Year break. I hope you had a good time with your family and love ones. I also hope you spared some time to put smiles on someone's face during the festive period. Now that we have rested and back more refreshed, bubbling with energy and vigor, let us pour our hearts into the service of humanity with passion in this second half of the 2018/2019 Rotary year. I am proud of the caliber of men and women we have in our club, the Rotary Club of Effurun. Over the years, we demonstrated that we are people of action. Rotary is as assemblage of people from different professions, business men and women united in the ideals of service. We are kindhearted group of people who are willing to use their tenants, wealth and time to serve humanity. We have shown to the world that Rotarians are problem solvers. We lead by example. Where other people see problems we see opportunity to serve and make a difference. My dear friends, as we enter the month of January designated by Rotary International as Vocational Services Month, as volunteers let us use our professional expertise to solve societal problems. Participate actively is club's voluntary services. The world needs more social workers together we can do more. Mid-Year Assembly, Ethics & Women In Rotary Seminar is coming up 11th - 12th January 2019 in Asaba, I encourage all Rotarians both old and new to register for these great events that the District has generously offered free of charge to attendees. Registration for RI convention scheduled to hold in 1st 5th June 2019 in Hamburg, Germany is ongoing. This is one RI event you cannot afford to miss. I wish to congratulate all the elected in-coming officers that will pilot the affairs of this our noble club is 2019/2020 Rotary Year. I also salute all Rotarians that participated in the election of the incoming officers for a smooth electoral process devoid of rancor. January 20 is my birthday and as I mark the date of my birth jointly with my sponsor, Rotn Tom Ovwere, I also felicitate with our members and their spouses whose birthdays, 2 Rotary birthdays and wedding anniversaries fall within the month of January. Invite your friends, business partners, professional colleagues and relations to come and fellowship with us. The more we are the merrier! Rotary is the right place to be. Yours in service, Rotn Gordon Duku (PHF, MCIPS) RC EFFURUN PRESIDENT

RI PRESIDENT S MESSAGE V JANUARY 2019 ocational service can be hard to define, but it is easy to describe: It is simply the point where our Rotary lives and our professional lives intersect. When we put our Rotary ideals to work through our work, that is vocational service. When I returned to the Bahamas after many years working in health care administration abroad, I realized that my country badly needed a modern health care facility. The resources we had at the time were out of date and inadequate, and people who were unable to travel abroad for care often did not receive the care they needed. Without the experience I had gained in the United States, I could have done nothing to change the status quo. But since I did have that experience, I was in a unique position to have an impact. I knew I could turn my professional path to good and make a career out of improving Bahamian health care. As Rotary became part of my journey, I discovered that the words of Paul Harris that became the basis of Rotary that shared effort knows no limitations were also true for my vocation. I could not bring modern health care to the Bahamas alone. But through partnership, both with the doctors who eventually became my partners in Doctors Hospital and with all the dedicated staff members who worked in the hospital over the years, we could change everything. My goal became a shared goal and then it became reality. Rotary emphasizes the dignity of every vocation and the worth of every calling. Remember that the four founding members included no doctors or peacemakers just an attorney, a mining engineer, a coal dealer, and a printer. From the beginning, the diversity of those vocations gave Rotary a special strength. And that diversity is reflected in our classification system, which aims to ensure that each club represents the 3 full range of businesses and professions that serve each community. Paul Harris put it this way: "Each Rotarian is the connecting link between the idealism of Rotary and his trade or profession." It was true when he said it and should be equally true now. We only spend an hour or two a week at our Rotary meetings, but most of us spend most of our waking time at work. Through Rotary, those hours are also an opportunity for service: a chance to Be the Inspiration to those we work with, those who work for us, and the communities we serve. RI PRESIDENT President Barry Rassin Barry Rassin President January 2019

DISTRICT GOVERNOR'S MESSAGE JANUARY, M y dear people of action, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!! I warmly welcome you to January 2019, Rotary's vocational month. How time flies, we are halfway into Rotary year. Rotary has a long history of commitment to professionalism and service as demonstrated in the composition of the four wise men that started Rotary ; a Lawyer, Merchant Tailor, Coal Miner and a Sailor. Today we have well over one million Rotarians in various fields of human endeavor. This simply puts Rotary in a different class of service organizations. Rotary has the greatest pool of human resources amongst all service organizations and this is the source of strength and pride of Rotary because Rotary is synonymous with humanitarian service with inexhaustible resources. Rotary has five avenues of service to humanity, representing the philosophical and practical framework for service delivery. The second avenue of service, vocational service, enjoys the purpose of promoting high ethical standards in business and professions. It recognizes the worthiness of all useful and dignifying occupations. It encourages ideal of service in our works and working places.come to think of this ; occupation, vocation, classification any difference?rotary classifies its over one million members according to member's profession, business or community service. Classification therefore defines the principal and recognized activity of a Rotarian, his firm or institution. It ensures that each club member is a reflection of the cross-section of the community's business and professional population. Through our vocational expertise, service and leadership, we solve social, pressing and critical issues. No problem is too big for Rotary to solve. In order to carry our Rotary's mission and understand our history of commitment to professionalism and service, Rotarians need to be familiar with Rotary's guiding principles and value statements (4 way test, object of rotary, rotary code of conduct, the 5 avenues of service). One of such guiding principles is the object of Rotary with the 3 key words encourage, ideal of service, and worthy enterprise. Of great relevance is this second on the list of object high ethical standards in business and professions. The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society". It is our responsibility to promote high ethical standards in our communities and work places by hiring the best 4

hands, providing the best trainings, mentorship and placing emphasis on honesty, accountability, integrity, fairness and respect. Vocational service ideas in our clubs may include inviting young people to special vocational meetings, giving recognition to that professionally committed traffic warden, carpenter etc. RC EFFURUN/ SOLA MESE FOUNDATION SKILLS ACQUISITION What about sponsoring a Four way test essay competition, displaying a Four way test, Declaration of Rotarians in business and professions in your office or work space and talk about them at every opportunity?.what about starting a career counselling and training by professional persons, geared towards equipping unemployed or underemployed adults with the skill they need to compete in the job market?. Think of volunteering your vocational expertise by joining CADRE, joining the volunteers to end polio. Shelter box needs volunteers. Use rotary's projectlink database to identify a project in need of your specialized vocational skills. Dear friends, remember always that you are a representative of your vocation in Rotary, while you represent Rotary in your profession. Therefore, strive to be the best on both sides of the divide. I most sincerely appreciate your support in the last 6 months expressed in words, thoughts and actions. The high level of hospitality put at my disposal during Clubs visits was unprecedented. I thank you for the tangible gifts given me by individual Rotarians, Clubs, Government and traditional rulers. Together, we can be the inspiration for positive fundamental changes in our communities. YemiOladokun. The Inspiration DG. 5

TIPS ON EVERYDAY LIVING RESOLVE TO DO THIS ONE THING IN 2019 T here's something about ushering a new year that feels downright magical. create a better you, work on loving and accepting you as you are right now. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you consider this resolution: The challenges and difficulties of the old year seem to melt away as hopeful expectations of a new year fill you with excitement. 1. Your ego will likely resist this resolution for various reasons And though much has been written about the ineffectiveness of New Year's resolutions, it's nearly impossible to not think up a few. Maybe it feels like a cop-out or it's too simplistic. Your ego will say things like What will I accomplish by doing that? Maybe you think that you're unlovable as you are. It's ok, just go ahead and give it a try anyway. Maybe you're thinking of all the ways you wish you were healthier, wealthier, and friendlier. Maybe instead of feeling excited, these thoughts leave you feeling like a failure. Maybe you did not accomplish a single resolution from the list you created a year ago. 2. Don't wait until you feel better about yourself If you must make a resolution this year This brings me to my next point. Don't cheat by trying to improve yourself in some small way before you begin accepting yourself. The truth is that no matter how much you improve yourself, you can always find reasons to not accept yourself. Don't wait. Let it be this: 3. You will fail This leaves you feeling deflated and hopeless, especially if you've been trying to change your life over a period of years. Like any other good New Year's resolution, you're bound to fail at this one too. You will find that it's easier to accept yourself somedays more than others. You'll beat I resolve to accept and love myself completely and unconditionally. In other words, instead of thinking up ways to 6

yourself up as you have before. And you'll judge yourself for beating up yourself in the first place. But unlike other resolutions, failure is really an opportunity to go deeper into the practice. When you're feeling particularly challenged, you can repeat a phrase like This too. Accept it all. GLIMPSE AROUND THE WORLD OF ROTARY Rotary 4. Acceptance is not condoning or resignation Instead, it's facing your perceived or real flaws with courage, compassion, and grace. In fact, our lack of acceptance is the reason the vast majority of our resolutions fail. We never take this critical first step of fully accepting ourselves as we are. We'd rather just hit the gym than stop to take a good look at ourselves in the mirror first. BE THE INSPIRATION But the magic is that when we accept ourselves fully, we're more easily able to pursue our goals with greater ease. We learn to find joy in the process of becoming rather than fixating on results. This is the wonderful paradox of acceptance RCWishes Effurun You A Happy New Year 7

Health Corner HEALTH 2019: DOCTOR, RUNNING EXPORT SHARE TIPS. I f you've resolved to become a healthier you in 2019, it's time to lace up some shoes and hit the pavement. Dr, a running expert and professor of family medicine at West Virginia University, said running is one of the best ways to get fit and stay healthy, even into old age. He shared some advice and tips for seasoned runners and those just getting started. It's not just about exercise and mitochondria and health and all that scientific stuff, but it's really wired in our brain, said Cucuzzella, author of Run Y W The key is to keep it up past grade school. Focus on balance It's in our DNA Take note of any backyard or playground, and chance are, you'll see kids running around. Cucuzzella said almost all humans grow up running, and it starts at an early age. Related Stories Can running help combat the health challenges of aging?health & FITNESS NEWS 9 Balance plays a huge role in running because running is a series of jumps where you have to land on one foot, stick that landing and get off the ground, Cucuzzella said so working a few balance exercises into your daily routine can help ensure you stay safe and injury-free out on the road (or trail or treadmill).

Try standing on one foot for a minute or two, rotating between legs, while you brush your teeth or scroll through social media feeds. If you have a standing desk at work, make a habit of balancing on one foot while you respond to s. A little fine-tuning goes a long way. Just spend as much time as you can on one foot trying to master that balance and never lose it, Cucuzzella said. Food is important Pause on the platter of pasta: When it comes to running, or any sport, food counts. If you eat junk food and a lot of sugary stuff and you end up with diabetes and heart disease, then it's going to be hard to run, Cucuzzella said. The equation is pretty simple, but it's hard to apply in a modern life where we have a horrible food environment and all the technology designed to keep us in chairs. SHORT BUSINESS TIP YOU CAN GET IT IF YOU REALLY WANT. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and real food is the foundation of good health. Just keep your health and then the running is small details; it's just getting outside, he said. Set realistic goals If it's been a while since your last run, ease into it. Cucuzzella recommends beginners start off with a mix of walking and slow jogging. Make your goal over half a year to get to the point that you could jog slowly for 30 minutes. This isn't the six-week plan; get yourself out the door and just continue, Cucuzzella said. of the Day Husband takes the wife to a disco there s a guy on the dance floor break dancing, moon walking, back flipping, the works. The wife turn to her husband and says, see that guy? 25 years ago he proposed to me and I turned him down. Husband says, looks like he s still celebrating... and that s how the fight started! Your first step is your first step walking is an OK place to start. Stay active If you don't enjoy running, Cucuzzella said find something you do enjoy and keep doing it. Stay healthy because you can't medicate yourself to health, Cucuzzella said. 10
