2 NPR/35 ANNOUNCERS Here in Unesco House in Paris we have a guest whose voice and face and charm are familiar all over the world. She is Miss Myrna Loy the motion picture star, of course. Miss Loy 9 s presence at Unesco House is not merely due to her prominence in a field which would be officially labelled one of the media of Mass Coimuunications. She is active in promoting the ideals of Unesco on her own as a member of the Southern California Council for Unesco, First, Miss Loy, are you one of the thousands of Americans who are summer vacationing in Europe? MISS LOY: No, I am not. I came to Europe a year ago to make a film in London, which I have finally completed, I have recently been in Italy and I have come to Paris to come to Unesco House, which I have been wanting to do for a long time. ANNOUNCER ga pleasure for us, of course. Now, let us hear the outstanding impression you have received of the work being done at Unesco during your short visit. MISS LOYs Well, I have only been here three days but, in that time, I have been very impressed by the vitality of Unesco House and the fact that people seem to be at last turning the wonderful theories and ideas into facts. ANNOUNCER Is there any particular programme or project of Unesco that you have learned about which interestsyou a lot? MISS LOY ANNOUNCER: MISS LOY: You mean at the moment? Yes, something you might have learnt since you came to Unesco. Yes, the problem of fundamental education has always interested me very much and I have heard of some very interesting things that have been done. I believe Dr. Bowers is here and, if he would be kind enough, I would like to ask him a few questions about some of the things that I have heard have been done in Haiti.

3 MPR,/35 page 2 AN NOUNCER:Dr. Bowers. DR. BOWERS; Well, it is a great pleasure to meet you Miss Loy and, if I can answer any of these awkward questions, well, I shall certainly be delighted. MISS LOY; Well, I heard this morning of these extraordinary things that you are doing, not only teaching people how to read and write but how to live - in other words, to be happier with themselves. Isnt that it? DR. BOWERS; You have really hit the nail on the head, I think. We are very keen to get across the idea that fundamental education is not just reading and writing, because you can read and write without being any happier very often you can read and write and be less happy. And, of course, in Haiti they have some problems. I find in the United States it is quite difficult to make the taxi driver - the man in the street to realise just what problems they do have in these less-developed countries, as we call them. Of course,, we are trying to use education to help the people to solve their own problems. ANNOUNCER; Miss Loy, can we go back to Southern California for a moment? Would you tell us something about the Southern California Council, or the California Councils, for Unesco, how they work and what they do? MISS LOY; Well, there are two councils in California I am rather proud to say, because it shows that there is a great interest in the state in Unesco, and I am fortunate enough to sit on the one in Southern California. It is composed of educators; presidents of colleges, of Dr. Dy Kastra, who is a member of the National Commission; Dr. Tyner, and any number of very prominent people in education - also people connected with the musical world and the arts and the sciences. I was given a chairmanship of a committee - the Ways and Means Committee - last year, in Hollywood, to explore the problem of motion pictures in relation to Unesco, how the motion picture could be useful and how it could tell the story of the ideals and the hopes of Unesco0

4 C MPR/35 - page 3 ANNOUNCER: Are any other members of what we call the film colony working with you in that project? MISS LOY: Yes,, on this Committee the Ways and Means Committee there arc members of the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences; Charles Brackett, who is also a very well known producer he has produced many fine pictures; Jean Hershol 9 who is president of the Academy, the Secretary, Margaret Herrick, Celeste Holm, who is well known for her performances in "Oklahoma", I think, and then the other people on the Council are members. Oh yes, there is one other important man to me and that is Kenneth McGowan., who was a producer in motion pictures and who is now teaching how to make films in colleges, which is a new project and which is something which has never been done before. ANNOUNCER: Are you drawing up plans for working with the film industry or have the film industry work with Unesco? Is that the idea? MISS LOY: Yes. Members of the National Commission have contacted some of the people in the higher levels in the industry, and they are very interested in seeing what they can do. I feel that a great deal can be done by the picture, and I think that 9 in dramatizing things that are constructive, there is as much drama in construction as there is in destruction, but that is a thing that we have to fight because many people seem to be more interested in pictures about violence. ANNOUNCER MISS LOY: Yes, that is the problem. But I don u t think that iv true. I think the fight for human understanding is a very dramatic one. I am thoroughly convinced that it is., and I think it should be presented as such. ANNOUNCER: Of course, more and more films are being made on those lines, many of them recently in Hollywood, and they have had just as great success as the stories of gangsters and violence.

5 LP/35 page MISS LOY: Yes indeed, indeed they have made many of them. They havent been called films with a Unesco idea, but they are nevertheless. ANNOUNCER: That's what they are nevertheless. Miss Loy, would you say that there is something that the average man in the street can do toward promoting Unesco's ideals. He doesn't have to be a member of a council, but he can still take an active interest in the work. MISS LOY: Well, yes, he can, but, first of all he must have available to him the materials such as what the plan of Unesco is, and, as it is a very simple one, I think that anyone who is interested can easily write or appeal to a council nearby and got information on what they can do and how they can develop the idea. ANNOUNCERS Arid, of course, in the United States you have many organizations which can be very active. MISS LOY: We have many organizations - women's clubs and university clubs and musical clubs - all that sort of thing. They all have a very important thing to do in cultural relations. ANNOUNCER: And, if there are any of those clubs in Southerncalifornia who hear these programmes or whose members hear these programmes, what can they do about getting information through the organization with which you work? MISS LOY: They can write to the Council in Los Angeles. ANNOUNCER: That is the Southern Council for Unesco. MISS LOY: For Unesco, in Los Angeles, yes. ANNOUNCER: Thank you very much Miss Myrna Loy.
