So much trouble have you undergone For the sake of that faith Disdained and resisted all the pain Blessed is our land Assam Blessed, my guru, is our land Assam. From the Luit through the Mississippi I have seen the Volga s beauty From Ottawa through Austria I have given Paris an embrace hearty From Ellora I ve carried to Chicago antique hues In the minarets of Dushambe I have heard Ghalib s lays Squatting at Mark Twain s grave I have talked of Gorky Time and again people in my journey Have become to me so dear So I carry on as a wanderer. Many nomads are mere drifters But I have a dream I want to share with others A spring of delight wherever I find. I have seen rows of colossal skyscrapers I have seen lots of tramps under their shades I have seen mansions adorned with gardens in the front I have seen petals of drooping flowers falling off early Having seen menials in so many lands I am worried really In their homes people dear to me have become strangers So I carry on as a wanderer. 1968, Tr. Autumn nights adorn her hair with stars The land where the sun rises, Of Bharat s eastern marges. Wherever would I find Such beauty in symmetry But in the land where the sun rises, Of Bharat s eastern marges. *a month (April-May) of the Assamese calendar **another month (January-February) of the Assamese calendar 1969 Tr. 5 At the ocean s confluence At the ocean s confluence I ve swam scores of times Still I have not felt jaded Yet in the Pacific of my mind Are roaring the waves restless. In the bosom of my mind s Pacific Are coming in the tides endless Myriads of waves with ever-renewing pace Bring home hopes boundless. On the Pacific shores now The peace of great lives reels under attack The giants and demons inflict Cruel blows with ever new tricks So in the Pacific of my mind Are roaring the waves restless. The blows of infliction bring in conflicts But the crusaders of peace are countless The conflicts open in my Pacific A new horizon of real progress So in the Pacific of my mind Are roaring the waves restless. The force of the deep Pacific keeps At bay the forces ravaging The peace march of vibrant masses For creativity is craving. 1952, Tr. The Himalayas act as India s sentinel We heard many a tale in the past But the dead cry aloud An ever-vigilant force is the hour s need. Today I came across the Kameng frontier Saw the enemy s brutality I offered my homage of tears To scores of the silent and deceased. Many a father has lost his son! 7 The Luit banks will be lit up This was my feeling when I offered my services as a lecturer at Gauhati University. This image of the university will definitely be realized in the distant future. The banks of the Luit will definitely be lit up. The Luit banks will be lit up Beaking the dams of darkness Streams of light will course Down Pragjyotish our land. 8 My heart is hammering My heart is hammering, O mother! Who takes away my sleep, O mother? How can I, your son, tide you over? I feel like dying for you. The moon of our land Is lost in the menacing dark Ghastly flames spread over My body s every pore. The rampart hard as thunder Runs all around, O mother! In no time I ll break apart O mother, all around the rampart. With a liberated morn I ll console you, o mother! With the sacrifice of blood I ll build an altar. 1963, Nirendra Nath Thakuria Reproduced from Dr Bhupen Hazarika, A legend, edited by Professor Basanta Deka and published by Orchid Publication, Lamb Road, Guwahati ı fl ƒ ƒ fl À1 ı fl ƒ ƒ fl À1ñ Œ ±1 ± Œfl ±ÀÚ øú^± À1ñ Œ ±1 ± Û S Δ øfl ÀÓ Ó À1 ± ±, ŒÓ ±À1 Δ À1 ±º Œapple À1 f ± fl ± g±à1 ±ªÀ1 øó fl ±ø fl ± Œapple 1 1Àh 1Àh À1º ı <- apple Ï ˇ ± Œ à ۱ À1 Î ˇ Œ à ۱ À1 Î ˇ Œˆ øapple øfl ø?àó ± Ú± Û1º ±ø ±b LÚ± ± ømê - õ ˆ ±ÀÓ À1 Ô±ø Û Ô± ÛÚ± ± Œ ±øìó øó ±À À1º

So close is this land to my heart Every day it brings me new dreams In the golden stream of our village The stars frolic at night. 10 In the Month of Magha in 1354 In the month of Magha in 1354, on the evening of the 16th, the world was hit on the head by a bolt, Where has Bapu disappeared? You came through the enveloping darkness with a burning faggot, overcoming a lot of suffering. With your smile of love you let loose, chasing the untruth away. When the world bathed in the blood of violence, you cleaned it with the message of ahimsa, the enemy was struck with wonder. You performed your duties all by yourself, you destroyed age old practices. Through your prayers you spread the message to the world, Allah and Rama are two sides of the same coin. You touched the dust under layers of dust with a lot of care. You embraced the dalits, all cries of selfishness fell silent. On the 17th of Magha the smoke coming out of sandal wood covered the sky. Embracing this smoke the wind sobs, where has Bapu disappeared? 1948, Tr. 11 Symbol of hope for the downtrodden India Long live Mahatma Gandhi, the symbol of hope for the downtrodden India. You ve intoxicated the world with your charm, binding the world with a bond of love. Exposing them with your universal love you ve understood the essence of all religions. You ve spread the nectar-sweet message about the luminiscence of humanity. Scantily clad like a starving peasant, you are like the calm gentle lean sage Dadhisi, Giving up desire anger greed you ve lit the candle all by yourself, destroying the darkness of sorrow. 1947, Tr. The facile ease, with which he gives lyrical expression to his feelings, often impromptu, about anything that catches his fancy, is indeed amazing to a lesser mortal. As if that, per se, is not enough, he also sets the lyric to a tune that is as much captivating as it is enriching to the spirit and the nuances of the theme. Bhupen Hazarika s famous song- Mahatma Gandhi is a tribute to the Father of the Nation and his secular philosophy- more appropriately- Mahatma s concept of religion. The soul of the song could not have been more in consonance with the basic tenet of the brand of religious philosophy that the Mahatma has evolved and propounded till his death. The lyric set to the tune of Kamrupiya Lokgeet (folk songs of Kamrup) eulogizes the virtues of Mahatma s great humanitarianism in simple idiom and with rustic flavor of a folk song. A subtle fusion of Ramdhun and Kamrupiya folk tune, the essence of the song encapsulates the rubric of monism, in that Hinduism and Islam are the two sides of a coin. There is only one God known by different names to different sects of believers-be it Rama, Rahim or Jesus. Even the religious scriptures of different faiths also preach the same sermon and therefore there is no fundamental difference between the places of worship as well, except that they are called by different names like Mandir or Masjid (the temple or the mosque). So there should not be any scope of violence because of liturgical differences of the practicing believers. After all every living being is a particle of God. That people should indulge in wanton violence against each other in the name of religion is what pains the Mahatma no end. What really mortifies him even further is the violent disposition of human beings despite their supreme sense of discernment. Such sinister proclivity of the people and the prevailing pestilence around him have made the Mahatma so disillusioned about the world that he prefers death to having to suffer the unbearable ordeal of bloodshed on earth. The song is an ode to the doctrine of love and universal brotherhood which is so dear to Mahatma Gandhi and his philosophy of non-violence, adored and adopted by the world. Substance of the song redered in English by Anil Barua 116
