SPIRITUAL GIFTS QUESTIONNAIRE Spiritual Gifts Questionnaires Following are two spiritual gift questionnaires that you can use to help reflect on your spiritual gifts. The first, The Spiritual Gifts Experience Questionnaire, by Dr. Bobby Clinton and Dr. Richard W. Clinton, covers 19 of the spiritual gifts specifically mentioned in the New Testament. This questionnaire assumes the contemporary validity of all the individual gifts mentioned in the New Testament. The second, Romans Spiritual Gifts Questionnaire, covers only the functional gifts as outlined in Romans chapter 12, and avoids the issue of whether or not all of the gifts mentioned in the New Testament are valid for today. You are free to use both or either of the gift questionnaires. CCE is not endorsing or commenting on any particular theological view of the gifts. Rather, our desire is to give you quality broadly accepted questionnaires from which you can select as you work through the LifeMap process yourself, and as you coach others. 1

THE SPIRITUAL GIFTS EXPERIENCE QUESTIONNAIRE Introduction God has given believers gifts to serve within the body of Christ that benefit his kingdom work and bring honor to him. Recognition of what our gift(s) is comes primarily through serving. If you think you have a particular gift, ministry experience and the results of that ministry will either confirm it or contradict your thinking. This Experience Questionnaire is designed to cause you to reflect on your present and past experiences and activity to help you confirm the gift(s) you have been operating in. Instructions The statements are grouped according to each spiritual gift. If a statement does not exactly fit a particular situation, feel free to slightly modify it, as illustrated in the examples below. The revised statement should imply the same kind of outward expression of the gift. Complete all of the sections, then tally your scores on pages 22 and 23 to discover your top spiritual gifts. Example #1 I have taught regularly in a small group situation and can definitely point out several people who mentioned they saw truth clarified for them. Modified I have taught regularly in a Bible study and can definitely point out someone who mentioned they saw truth clarified for them. Example #2 I ve repeatedly received comments that my contribution helped clarify and explain points in the discussion. Modified I ve frequently received comments that my contribution helped clarify and explain points in the discussion. The Spiritual Gifts Experience Questionnaire is created by Dr. J. Robert Clinton and Dr. Richard W. Clinton. It is used by permission and is adapted for the Center for Coaching Excellence. The Spiritual Gifts Experience Questionnaire cannot be modified by CCE trainees. 2

WORD OF WISDOM 85. It has often been my experience in group situations that I could clearly, yet intuitively, see what must be done and was able to communicate this by applying correct scriptural principles to the situation. 86. I ve often had individuals ask me for my opinion concerning a situation they were facing, and a scriptural phrase or passage or some other advice came to mind which I shared with them. 87. I ve often been convinced in my own mind that the Holy Spirit has given me an answer and led me in my choice of words so that what I said would be received well. 88. People have often remarked to me that they have taken some comment that I made as a word from God to them concerning some issue or decision that they must make. 89. Many times I ve thought, It is clear how God sees this; why don t these people see things God s way? 90. I have experienced a deep sense of satisfaction when people have applied my advice to their situation and have later received clear confirmation that the advice was God-given. 91. It is easy for me to match a particular current situation with a biblical character or historical event in the Bible and draw application for the situation. 92. Sometimes in a one-on-one situation I get a clear impression of some answer that I feel should be given to the person. I do so and get almost immediate feedback that it was the correct, God-given insight. 93. Sometimes I see pictures in my mind of something that I feel God wants me to communicate to a group. 94. In a committee when we are struggling to find a solution to a complex situation, a thought will flash in my mind and I intuitively sense it is from God, so I ll share it with the group and it is accepted as the solution to the situation. 10

WORD OF KNOWLEDGE 95. In a group meeting, I ve several times had a strong impression of something pertaining to the group. This was a thought I would not have known had God not given the impression to me. 96. Sometimes I see pictures in my mind of something that I feel God wants me to communicate to a particular group. 97. I have suddenly known things that are needs in a group situation or a person s life. 98. In talking with a person in a Christian setting I ve sensed information about the person s personal life (e.g. problem, hopelessness, fear). 99. I ve been used by God to affirm an individual by revealing something from their past only known by this person. Because they knew God must have revealed it, it was encouraging and brought them closer to God I identify with the Bible passage about the woman at the well when she recognized Jesus as receiving revelation from God. I find that I suddenly have information about a person (this information is always for the person s well-being) I have a close relationship with God and I m sensitive to the promptings of his inner voice Sometimes in healing situations, I knew, spontaneously that someone had a certain health problem that God wanted to heal. 11

FAITH 103. When problems arise, my natural inclination is to trust God while others involved first try to analyze the situation or seek a way to solve the problem I have often prayed the prayer of faith. God has answered many of these prayers and I rest in the assurance that he will answer the rest A number of times in my personal Bible reading, I ve been convinced that God would have me claim certain promises for certain situations. I have done this and have seen many of these promises fulfilled People often come to me and ask me to pray for a situation because they feel my prayers will be answered There are times that I have stepped out in faith to attempt a task that I felt God wanted me to do. People have been encouraged to trust God in a deeper way because of my example Many of these times of exercising faith have been unknown to others, but I m still certain God has used some of my experiences in trusting him in unusual ways to encourage others to believe and pray with expectancy I John 5:14, 15 are favorite passages and give the reason for my confidence in praying ( This is the confidence we have... that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us whatever we ask we know that we have what we asked of him. ) 12

GIFT OF HEALING 110. I m frequently asked, along with other leaders, to pray for people to be healed I have sensed God s power as I prayed for someone and have seen the person healed of a physical ailment I have sensed the power of God present in a healing service and as a result, have felt an increased faith within me to believe God for healing I have sometimes felt a strange warmth flowing through my hands when I m praying for someone I ve observed many healings such as backs straightened, inner organs healed or soreness in muscles relieved I frequently pray for inner healing dealing with persons who have dysfunctional backgrounds or history of problems For me to see someone receive healing and to know it was God s power brings tremendous joy I believe that God heals through supernatural means as well as through medical means, but my first inclination when someone says they are ill is to ask, has someone prayed for you? 118. I resonate with passages like Acts 27:8, 9 where people were healed. I believe God is still doing that today, and I m part of it Often when I see the sick or hurting, a feeling of compassion wells up within me and I want to do something to help them. 13

WORKINGS OF POWER 120. I believe God uses signs and wonders today to display his power and reality, and I have faith that he uses me in this way I ve observed God s power to deliver someone from demonic control I believe works of power/miracles allow God to demonstrate that he is God As a result of God s power, I ve seen God bring back to life a person who was dead, dying, or thought to be dead God has used me in situations where he performed a miracle and his power was seen through this miracle. This brought me great joy I ve prayed for protection in a dangerous situation and have seen a miracle of protection take place I ve experienced a situation where food was provided in a miraculous way I ve seen drug addicts delivered instantly in my ministry I ve seen dangerous weather dissipate after praying for God s miracle power in the situation. 14

DISCERNING OF SPIRITS 129. It is almost second nature to me to analyze what a person says to see if it matches what I think Scripture teaches People often comment that I have a way of getting to the heart of an issue It s been my experience that people ask me, Is what this person says really true? 132. I often catch myself not paying attention to a conversation because I ve become interested in analyzing, in detail, something that was said I find myself bringing to the attention of others a particular practice that is inconsistent with Scripture Upon occasion, I recognize I m being confronted by a spiritual power and I m able to sense what kind of spirit is involved I have, at times, entered a room and known immediately that there was an evil presence I m bothered when teachers or preachers misinterpret or misapply scriptural truth. It may not bother others Sometimes I have a sense that a person has dishonest motives People sometimes come to me and share their dreams, visions or thoughts and want my assessment. 15

TONGUES 139. In a situation not influenced by anyone, God gave me tongues. I suddenly began to speak in syllables which I did not understand When faced with a crisis or need for discernment, I often pray immediately in tongues as a first response. This usually brings a sense of calmness or focus, after which God meets me in the situation When I don t know how to pray for a situation I pray in tongues, trusting God is hearing and that the Spirit is leading in this intercession type of prayer In worship situations, where it is appropriate, I often sing in tongues and find that what I sing harmonizes with others to produce a worshipful experience and sound When I m asked to pray for someone, sometimes I pray in tongues inwardly and then pray outwardly in words understood by all I have, upon occasion, given a word in tongues. It was interpreted and was seen to be a prophetic word of encouragement I frequently use a prayer language, a special gift of tongues given to me, in my private prayer when no one is around. It is a special time of closeness with God I ve wanted to give a word in tongues in a situation, but the people in the group inhibited that possibility because of their convictions about the gift I am not able to give a public word in tongues whenever I want, though I always make myself available to do so. When I do give a word, it is always interpreted I can speak in tongues whenever I want A leader laid hands on me and asked for the gift of tongues to be given to me. 16

INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES 150. In a public meeting, a person gave a word in tongues. During this time, I heard in my mind something like a simultaneous translation of what they were saying. Immediately after tongues concluded, I gave the interpretation I ve often given interpretation of tongues in a small group setting I m sensitive to God s revelatory voice and believe God can speak to people through a word in tongues and interpretation I enjoy providing authenticity to God s unusual messages given in tongues by giving the translation. 17

ADMINISTRATION 154. I ve served in administrative roles in my church that required my organizational abilities I ve been asked to serve on committees to solve particular administrative problems I m often asked to arrange for the details of meetings I ve served or am serving in a trustee or deacon(-ess) role I ve been in charge of several church programs which require organizational abilities I like to see things done in an orderly way and want to help make this happen I easily see what needs to be done administratively in situations or in a particular plan I ve successfully organized different ministries I ve stepped in when something was failing due to lack of follow-through I enjoy supporting the ideas of innovative people and organizing the details that bring their vision to life. 18

GIVING 164. At times I ve provided help to others by sacrificially giving money I ve been able to do without things that others consider necessary in order to give more to God s work God somehow seems to bring to my attention the financial needs of others, and I ve responded by giving money to meet these needs. Few know about this I ve consistently given more than one-third of my income to God s work There have been times when I ve sensed a special financial need but did not have the finances to give. When money came in an unexpected way, I knew that God wanted me to respond to the need and I gave I have an inward joy in giving to meet a need, whether anyone knows about it or not I believe that God has given me special abilities to earn money, with the expectation that I will use these resources for his kingdom I find that I am liberal not only with my finances but with time and possessions as well. I enjoy using these resources to help others. 19

MERCY 172. I have an ability to recognize joy or sadness in a group or an individual I resonate with Jesus feelings in Matthew 9:36-38, when he looked on the multitudes, saw their needs and had compassion (was filled with tenderness) for them. I want to be one of those God uses to meet the needs of others I know that I m a sensitive person and feel people s needs more than most people I have a greater concern for people s mental distress than physical distress and want to remove the emotional pain, which can then result in emotional healing I want to help people who are suffering hardship and I m sensitive to those who are emotionally hurting. I can, at times, react harshly to the ones who caused the hurt I want to avoid being firmly direct until I know that it will benefit the person I m aware of words and actions that can hurt people I often avoid making decisions because I don t want to hurt anyone involved in the situation I ve been involved in a social outreach program which helps needy people I enjoy helping physically handicapped people and finding ways to brighten their lives I ve taken food baskets and/or helped distribute clothing to the poor I ve been involved in helping single mothers. 20

HELPS 184. I frequently see things that need to be done and find ways to accomplish these tasks Often people remark that I have a servant s heart; I like to help others I find genuine satisfaction in doing practical things that will assist others and I seek opportunities to do so joyfully I don t mind unexpected guests in my home if I know I am helping them by offering hospitality I am often the first to volunteer for tasks and manual projects in the church I have helped a number of people in my church with tasks (e.g. painting, home repairs) even though it meant I put off something I needed to do for myself I enjoy doing maintenance work as a service to my church I will ignore my own tiredness in order to help others I like to help others and find it difficult to say no I would rather work on short-term projects than lengthy ones. 21
