2 NIGHT PRAYER As we continue the Rotary Year, we ask You to be with us each step of the way Adapted from an invocation by Joseph D. Coons Bellingham WA We stay focused on the objectives we have for the world: Peace. Tranquility. A true Brotherhood of Man. Freedom from hunger, from oppression, from sickness. The freedom to choose our own destinies. We reaffirm our commitment to our simple Rotary Four Way Test for all we do and support: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? We reaffirm our commitment to high ethics in all we do. And we give thanks for all the blessings, opportunities and responsibilities that befall us as Rotarians. We continue in this new millennium with optimism, renewed energy, and a commitment to service to you and our fellow men and women. Please, Lord of the Universe, help us so to serve! Amen. 4 CROSSROADS Mario R. Nery ROTARY BRANDING PART 1 VIBRANT MEETINGS - PART II Given the assumptions of last week's articles that Rotarians are people accomplished in their vocations, have leadership qualities and are service oriented, it is to be expected that the programs during the weekly meetings ought to be invested with some imagination so that the interest of the members can be maintained, week after week. At first glance that is very difficult to do, specially if we remember to be Rotarians only once a week, or if you have the same persons doing the same assignments week after week. When we revived the concept of different groups to be in charge of the meetings on a monthly rotation basis, we assumed the original reason, which was to provide variety and arouse enthusiasm, was also going to be revived. Let us seriously ask ourselves - have we? Also, the rotation encourages all members of the team to handle all functions, except that of the President. That is part of belonging to a group and creates the sense that we are all in this together, and is very good training for all members. The officially prescribed format for weekly meetings is actually very simple, so that there is room for innovation within the meeting. Actually, in most countries, there is no MC or Night Chairman. Its the President who does it.so, how do we make this rotation scheme work? The group must meet, design and agree on assignments long before their assigned month. That means when their turn comes, they will be ready, willing and prepared. The leader should have alternatives for any contingency, such as absences and other unforeseen circumstances. There is no such thing as "puede na yan." The group should be imbued with competitiveness and a culture of excellence. All that just for one weekly meeting? No, a culture of excellence is a way of life for leaders, and that culture shines forth in every thing that we do, in or out of Rotary. It is not just for one meeting. It is a way of life. 4 9
5 LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLES...They are from Robert Greenleaf's The Servant Leader. (TY PP Ron N) 1. Listening - Traditionally, leaders have been valued for their communication and decision making skills. Leaders must reinforce these important skills by making a deep commitment to listening intently to others. Leaders seek to identify and clarify the will of a group. They seek to listen receptively to what is being said (and not said). Listening also encompasses getting in touch with one's inner voice, and seeking to understand what one's body, spirit, and mind are communicating. 2. Empathy - Leaders strive to understand and empathize with others. People need to be accepted and recognized for their special and unique spirit. One must assume the good intentions of coworkers and not reject them as people, even when forced to reject their behavior or performance. 3. Healing - Learning to heal is a powerful force for transformation and integration. One of the great strengths of leadership is the potential for healing one's self and others. In "The Servant as Leader", Greenleaf writes, "There is something subtle communicated to one who is being served and led if, implicit in the compact between the servant-leader and led is the understanding that the search for wholeness is something that they have." 4. Awareness - General awareness, and especially self-awareness, strengthens the servant-leader. Making a commitment to foster awareness can be scary--one never knows that one may discover! As Greenleaf observed, "Awareness is not a giver of solace - it's just the opposite. It disturbed. They are not seekers of solace. They have their own inner security." 5. Persuasion - Leaders rely on persuasion, rather than positional authority in making decisions. Leaders seek to convince others, rather than coerce compliance. This particular element offers one of the clearest distinctions between the traditional authoritarian model and that of servant-leadership. The leader is effective at building consensus within groups. 6. Conceptualization - Leaders seek to nurture their abilities to "dream great dreams." The ability to look at a problem (or an organization) from a conceptualizing perspective means that one must think beyond day-to-day realities. Servant-leaders must seek a delicate balance between conceptualization and day-to-day focus. 7. Foresight - Foresight is a characteristic that enables leaders to understand lessons from the past, the realities of the present, and the likely consequence of a decision in the future. It is deeply rooted in the intuitive mind. 8. Stewardship - Robert Greenleaf's view of all institutions was one in which CEO's, staff, directors, and trustees all play significance roles in holding their institutions in trust for the great good of society. 9. Commitment to the Growth of People - Leaders believe that people have an intrinsic value beyond their tangible contributions as workers. As such, leaders are deeply committed to a personal, professional, and spiritual growth of each and every individual within the organization. 10. Building Community - Leaders are aware that the shift from local communities to large institutions as the primary shaper of human lives has changed our perceptions and has caused a feeling of loss. Leaders seek to identify a means for building community among those who work within a given institution Is it the truth? PRESIDENT S CORNER President Amba Al Villacorte Every week Rotarians around the world ask themselves, "Is it the truth?" What is truth, really? Different people can define truth differently and still be correct. "Truth is whatever you believe." Take true love - what is it, anyway? How do you know when it is really true love and when it's just plain, simple, ordinary love? What measure or test are we going to use? It has been remarked, and wisely so, that there are at least three sides to every argument: my side, your side, and the truth. Lawyer Kapunan, in a recent tv interview, averred that she also wanted to know the truth. According to her most everything written about Napoles' life of luxury, with her mansions and flashy cars, were allegations at best, mostly lies. She complained of media bias, claiming the multiple investigations were being undertaken in aid of media, not to unearth the truth. Is telling the truth always the best policy? As a diplomat I was trained to modify and edit the facts because on certain occasion telling "the whole truth and nothing but the truth" could harm the country's image and interests. My country - right or wrong! How many times have I lied on behalf of Filipinos abroad in order to protect them against unfair treatment and abuse. Some people can handle the truth, others cannot. Perhaps the most difficult truth to confront is the truth about ourselves. The Manila Times editorialized: The Filipino people are mad as hell because they feel "this government is run by thieves". Sadly enough, lowly workers go to jail for stealing paper clips, while those who steal millions are elected to high office. The "people's march" last August was just one small step in the "hunt for truth", and hopefully with the added voice of the church this continuing journey would bring us closer to the truth "The truth is rarely pure, and never simple." Oscar Wilde 8 5
6 Last September 3, 2013, we had a crusader against corruption, Mr. Marcelo Tecson who expounded on the importance of pre-audit in preventing illegal and immoral disbursements in government. He has written government instrumentalities on how to handle these transactions. He is a lonely fighter who hopes to make a big contribution to the solution of the country s moral ills. To those who listened, it was an eye opener. Dr Aileen S.P. Baviera Profile Dr. Aileen San Pablo-Baviera is Professor of Asian Studies at the Asian Center, University of the Philippines, where she also served as Dean from Her research interests include Contemporary China, ASEAN-China relations, regional integration, Philippine foreign relations, and Asia Pacific security with a focus on territorial and maritime disputes.
