2 An educational trip to BNHS Finally, the day had come, the day I had been waiting for since we began with our new academic year. Yes it was 19 th April, the day on which our school had planned the Educational Trip to Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) I was very excited and had packed my bag with the delicious snacks prepared by my mother. I reached school with lot of excitement. We boarded the bus from the school. On our way to BNHS we enjoyed a lot by singing songs and playing games. When we reached BNHS, we were divided in two groups by our teacher. We were headed by a guide. It was an amazing sight. We saw wild animals like sambar, deer, leopard, red cotton bug and many more. The guide also gave us information about wild trees like ghost tree, crocodile tree, etc. It was a huge forest. We saw many insects and also a yellow throated sparrow, which is a rare species in India. Our guide gave us information about what animals eat and how they adapt to the environment. He also showed us faeces of some animals like deer, which had grass threads because they are Herbivores. It was a great learning experience. I have also brought many books and pamphlets that were available there and will go through all of them in my summer vacation. 4 I m an Egalitarian. We all have heard the word equality. But how many of us believe in it? Or even think about it? We live in a world where equality is just a distant dream especially for Indians. For our country to progress, we desperately need gender equality. It is intrinsically linked to sustainable development and is vital to the realization of human rights for all. The overall objective is to create an India where both males and females enjoy the same opportunities, rights, and obligations in all spheres of life. Societal prejudice can be blamed for gender inequality. Our minds have been conditioned to think in a way due to which we perceive one gender superior to the other. If there s one thing that absolutely needs to be instilled in our mind, it s that: Girls are not superior to Boys and neither are Boys superior to Girls. Egalitarianism is a trend of thought that favours equality for all. This is the type of revolution that our world and country needs. We must strive to achieve a world in which men and women are equal; endowed with the same dignity. So, I request you all not to be biased but believe in equality for the greater good of our world. This is the key to success and development, opening a brand-new door of opportunities for us. Let s all work together for a better version of our world and ourselves. Vidhi Kontham, X C

7 IIMUN AT VISSANJI ACADEMY IIMUN Conference was held on 22 nd & 23 rd of April 2017 in our school premises. 150 students from grade 8 th, 9 th & 10 th participated in this event. Mr. Hardik Jain is the Deputy President of Indian International MUN. Hardik has been in the organization since its founding years and plays a key role. Ms. Pranati Trivedi, Head Girl ( ) of Vissanji Academy, interviewed Mr. Hardik Jain on Sunday23rd April 2017 at Vissanji Academy How did you first get associated with the Indian International Model United Nations (IIMUN)? I ve done my computer engineering, I was a nerd when I was a school student. I used to be so shy that I just couldn t bring myself to talk to girls (laughs) in fact, I couldn t maintain any eye contact while interacting with anyone. That s when my elder brother decided to take matters in his hands! He forced me to participate in the IIMUN that was being held at Jai Hind College, and it was IIMUN s first year then. It was completely against my wishes, but I conceded in the end. That s when I met Rishabh, who is now the head of MUN s. When I participated in the MUN, Rishabh was the Chair (judge). After the competition, I felt much more confident, and I was determined to be a part of IIMUN. And ever since then, I ve been a part of this organization! How long has it been since you joined IIMUN? I ve been with IIMUN since day one. It s been five years! I am sure that there are hundreds of students who have stage fright and are shy just like I was earlier. I want to help others overcome this fear, just as IIMUN and Rishabh helped me win over mine. The work here is so satisfying! Have you won any accolades at IIMUN? Oh, there are a few small prizes here and there uh, I don t want to talk about that (smiles). I can talk about IIMUN s achievements. IIMUN is the leading model UN organization in the world! The second leading mock UN organization aims at hosting 6 7 conferences in a year, while IIMUN hosted six to seven conferences in a single weekend! Can you believe that? Currently, there are six ongoing conferences in six different cities, over this weekend. And the second leading organization is Harvard University! To be the head of so prestigious an institution as this, I think it is really a proud moment for all of us at IIMUN! Also, we are the only organization to get official permission to conduct our conference at the UN headquarters in New York! Do you have any message for our students? Oh yes! IIMUN has a lot to offer to all the students, and it helps them tremendously. All I want to convey to the students is to keep participating in IIMUN competitions as the exposure they get is extremely useful. That is exactly what helped me from being a shy, quiet child to now giving speeches in front of hundreds. The students of this school debated really very well. Mr. Hardik Jain hopes that the students of Vissanji Academy continue to enthusiastically participate in the upcoming IIMUN competitions.

What to do: hold two pieces of the paper and blow air from your mouth as shown below. Instead of your expectation that the papers go apart they will come closer together. What is going on: Bernoulli s principle states that, when there is a flowing fluid, the pressure is less where the velocity of the fluid is more. When the air is blown through the papers, the pressure inside it drops. But the atmospheric pressure outside the paper being more, it presses the papers closer together. Science to your rescue Soothe a sore throat: Gargle twice a day with a solution of six pressed garlic cloves mixed into warm water (not hot).follow this regimen for 3 days. Research shows that fresh garlic juice has antimicrobial properties that fight pain causing bacteria.
